User Notes:
Hardbound; xx + 904 pp., including black-and-white illustrations and diagrams, bibliographic references in footnotes, two addenda, a bibliography, and two indices. The first edition (©1976) of CW 18 was published in 1977, followed by the second printing "with corrections" in 1980. The corrected, 1980, second printing of the first edition is the terminal version of CW 18. This is not reflected in the version of CW 18 that is currently published in the digital edition of Jung's Collected Works (also among the Library's holdings), which does not include the designation "Second printing, with corrections, 1980" in the publication history of CW 18. Vol. 18 of the Collected Works was the eighteenth to be published. From the Editorial Note: "Volume 18 now contains more than one hundred and thirty items, ranging in time from 1901, when Jung at 26 had just accepted his first professional appointment as an assistant at the Burghölzli, to 1961, shortly before his death. The collection, touching upon nearly every aspect of Jung's professional and intellectual interest during a long life devoted to the exegesis of the symbol, justifies its title, taken from a characteristic work of Jung's middle years, the seminar given to the Guild of Pastoral Psychology in London, 1939." Many of the 139 items included in CW 18 had not been published previously. When pertinent, publication histories are provided in footnotes to the text and editorial notes, notably: • "The Tavistock Lectures" were published under the separate title "Analytical Psychology: It's Theory and Practice" (UK: Routledge & Kegan Paul Ltd.; USA: Pantheon Books; both ©1968), copies of which are among the Library's holdings. • "The Symbolic Life" was originally published under the same title by the Guild of Pastoral Psychology as a pamphlet (Guild Lecture #80; London: ©1954). This version was based on transcripts of Jung's lecture to the Guild on April 5, 1939. The version published in CW 18 includes "stylistic revisions" to the original Guild publication, copies of which are among the Library's holdings. • "Symbols and the Interpretation of Dreams" is a slightly revised version of Jung's last work, completed shortly before his death in June of 1961. The original version underwent extensive revisions and rearrangement before being published under the title "Approaching the Unconscious" as the introduction to the book "Man and His Symbols" (Aldus Books Limited; London; ©1964), copies of which are among the Library's holdings. The dates given in the table of contents for CW 18 are the dates of first publication or, when known, of writing.
