Experiencing the Unitary World: Alchemy and Transformation

This lecture explores the unus mundus—the unitary world—as Jung’s culminating vision of the individuation process, describing the paradoxical possibility of reaching unity amid periods of opposition. Drawing on Jung’s transformative encounter with the Great Stupa of Sanchi, his intensive exploration of Western alchemy through Gerard Dorn’s work, and his own near-death visions, we examine how the unus mundus became for Jung not an abstract metaphysical concept but a lived psychological reality. The presentation traces the Western alchemical path toward this unitary reality—a Faustian journey fundamentally different from Eastern approaches—and explores synchronicity as its para-psychological equivalent. Through personal dreams and Jung’s conception of “objective cognition,” we discover how direct experience develops into a double vision capable of perceiving both the external sensory world and its hidden depths of meaning, manifesting first in discontinuous flashes of synchronistic insight before consolidating into a lasting enlightenment where one becomes a living vessel for what Jung called the cosmogonic dignity of human consciousness.
