User Notes:
Hardbound; xxx + 557 pp., including bibliographic references in footnotes, 87 black-and-white plates, 43 black-and-white text figures, an appendix, a bibliography, and an index. The first Princeton/Bollingen edition of CW 5 was published in 1956, followed by a second edition "with corrections" (1967). The "Author's Note to the first American / English edition" appeared with the third printing of the second edition. Thus, the 1976, third printing of the corrected, second edition is the terminal version of CW 5, as reflected in Princeton's digital edition of Jung's Collected Works, which is also among the Library's holdings. Vol. 5 of the Collected Works was the fifth to be published. The version of this material that was eventually published as CW 5 was translated by R.F.C. Hull from C.G. Jung's "Symbole der Wandlung" (4th [Swiss] edition, rewritten, of "Wandlungen und Symbole der Libido"), published by Rascher Verlag, Zürich, 1952. This material was first published in English as "Psychology of the Unconscious: A Study of the Transformations and Symbolisms of the Libido; a Contribution to the History of the Evolution of Thought" (translated by Beatrice Hinkle; Moffat, Yard, and Co.; New York; 1916; and Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co Ltd; London; 1919, with reprints). This first American version was Hinkle's translation of the first edition of Jung's "Wandlungen und Symbole der Libido," published in 1912 by Deuticke Verlag, Leipzig and Vienna. Hinkle's translation of "Psychology of the Unconscious" was republished under the same title in 1991 (with an introduction by William McGuire) as Supplementary Volume 'B' of Jung's Collected Works, also among the Library's holdings. The third printing of Supplementary Volume 'B' also includes an additional foreword by Eugene Taylor. Additional information on the publication history of this material is provided in the editorial notes, translator's note, and forewords included in CW 5 and in the introductory material to Supplementary Volume 'B.'
