User Notes:
Hardbound; viii + 223 pp., including bibliographic references in footnotes and an index. Note that the table of contents lists a "Bibliographical Note," beginning on page 205, but this is missing from all versions of CW 17 in the Library's holdings. Instead, the index begins on page 205 of the text. The first edition of CW 17 was published in 1954; followed by the second printing "with corrections" in 1964 and the third printing "with additional corrections" in 1970. The corrected, 1970, third printing of the first edition is the terminal version of CW 17, as reflected in Princeton's digital edition of Jung's Collected Works, which is also among the Library's holdings. Vol. 17 of the Collected Works was the fourth to be published. The following four essays were subsequently published (unchanged) by Princeton/Bollingen under the title "Psychology and Education," which is also among the Library's holdings: • "Psychic conflicts in a child" • "Child development in education" • "Analytical psychology and education" • "The gifted child" Publication histories of the 8 principal papers included in CW 17 are provided in the table of contents, footnotes to the text, in the editorial note, and the translator's note. Notably, an earlier version of the essay "The Development of Personality" was included in the book "The Integration of the Personality" (translated by Stanley Dell; Farrar & Rhinehart, Inc.; New York; 1939), copies of which are among the Library's holdings. Earlier versions of the following three essays were published in "Contributions to Analytical Psychology" (translated by H.G. and Cary Baynes; Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co. Ltd. London; 1928), a copy of which is among the Library's holdings: • "Marriage as a psychological relationship" • "Analytical psychology and education" • "The Significance of the unconscious in individual education" The book "Analyse der Kinderseele" by Frances G. Wickes was originally published in English under the title "The Inner World of Childhood" (©1927, 1955, 1966), copies of which are among the Library's holdings. Jung's brief introduction to the original English edition of "The Inner World of Childhood" was expanded in the German edition; it is the expanded version that is published in CW 17. Contents: Editorial note Translator's note I. Psychic conflicts in a child II. Introduction to Wickes's "Analyse der Kinderseele" III. Child development in education IV. Analytical psychology and education V. The gifted child VI. The significance of the unconscious in individual education VII. The development of personality VIII.
