SUMMARY:More About Psychological Types
DESCRIPTION:Jung’s seminal work on temperamental differences\, Psychological Types (1921)\, introduced the idea that there are fundamental differences between individuals\, differences that define the range of normal human functioning. Sixty-five years later\, Jung’s terms “introversion”\, “extroversion”\, “thinking”\, “feeling”\, “sensation”\, and “intuition” have become part of the international vocabulary for discussing human differences. Yet few people know how to use them with precision\, and few understand how they belong to a scheme for the differentiation of consciousness within each individual. This lecture will attempt to make the archetype of differentiation implied by Jung’s theory of psychological types more explicit\, so that individuals can apply it to their own inner and outer development.

SUMMARY:Experiencing the Mother: Her Light/Her Darkness
DESCRIPTION:This time will be spent in a more free flowing interchange between Dr. Wagner and participants. Dr. Wagner will present material to further amplify the nature of the archetypal mother in her light and dark nature as she manifests in the lives of modern individuals. Time for questions\, discussion\, and comments from others will be taken. Individuals are invited to bring brief versions of dreams\, personal anecdotes\, poems\, comments\, and questions to share with the group. \nTo close the session on Saturday\, Dr. Wagner will invite participants in meditative exercises aimed at deepening awareness of the suffering and grief\, as well as the joy and compassionate love inherent in the nature of the mother. \nThe purpose of Saturday’s work will be to deepen our awareness and strengthen our ability to connect to the deeper unconscious in a living\, ongoing way. This brings us to wholeness in our own individual natures and it also helps us to meet the critical challenge to the survival of all live on planet earth which we now face.

SUMMARY:The Cry of Gaia: Death Into Life
DESCRIPTION:For men and women in modern America\, Mother’s Day can conjure up a mixture of feelings: sadness\, resentment\, contempt\, grief as well as warmth\, happiness\, nostalgia\, longing\, and genuine appreciation and love. The emotional experience each individual has of “mother” is far reaching and complex. In view of Jung’s discovery of the deeper archetypal unconscious\, we have much to reflect upon as we seek to be more aware of and to honor the reality of the mother. The longstanding neglect and rejection of the full feminine principle in our culture has shaped the nature of mothering and the consciousness we do or do not have of the Great Mother\, the archetypal feminine. \nIn Friday evening’s lecture\, “The Cry of Gaia\, Death into Life”\, Dr. Wagner will focus on the often neglected spiritual dimension of the personal mother and of the archetypal mother. Material from Jung’s own life will be presented. Particular emphasis will be placed on the experience of the death of the mother and on the role the Great Mother plays in experiences of death. Considerations on the nature of the return into modern consciousness of the Great Mother will be given.

SUMMARY:The Archetypes of Conflict
DESCRIPTION:Life without conflict is inconceivable. The strident clash of opposites goes resounding down the passages of time. Conflict between species\, conflict between nations\, conflict between generations\, conflict between the political left and right\, and conflict within the individual psyche-soma: all are subject to the same principles of dynamic opposition\, homeostasis and enantiodromia. \nThe material used Friday and Saturday will examine conflict in the light of biology (Darwin)\, depth psychology (Freud and Jung)\, modern neurology and ancient Chinese philosophy. Special consideration will be given to the development of techniques of conflict resolution.

SUMMARY:The Analytical Psychology of War
DESCRIPTION:Analytical Psychology is not just a technique for individuation or the treatment of psychic dis-ease; it is the study of human nature. the archetypes crucial to the survival of our species are those which govern the relations between groups of human beings\, yet politicians and generals are as ignorant of these as are the great mass of the world’s populations. What are the primordial principles determining the warlike and peaceful intentions of human communities? And how may consciousness of them contribute to the salvation of our planet?

SUMMARY:Metaphor as Myth and Religion
DESCRIPTION:This will be an all day seminar\, commencing with a lecture and continuing with open discussions of specific metaphors: The Promised Land\, Virgin Birth\, Resurrection\, End of the World\, Second Coming\, Heaven\, Hell\, Reincarnation\, God\, Brahman\, Nirvana\, etc. Examples from differing traditions will be recognized and compared\, the intention being to disengage\, in every case\, the message from the messenger\, the connotation from the denotation of the symbol. In other words\, we will make our way toward a clearer understanding of the difference between symbolic and literal meanings of mythic and religious image.

SUMMARY:Spiritus contra Spiritum: The Depth Psychology of Alcoholism: Flying High Again: Steps to Remaining a Grateful Recovering Alcoholic
DESCRIPTION:It is not enough for the alcoholic to just stop drinking. The alcoholic\, like Dionysios\, Icarus\, and Hermes\, has a moral obligation to get high again\, to get his/her spirit back\, to become in-spired\, and to celebrate what it means to be free of chemical dependency and its negative psychological consequences. This lecture will concentrate on some of the insights from Jung’s complex psychology which can help the alcoholic develop a more positive Self-Image. The same Puer complex which was a mill-stone for the drinking alcoholic can become a stepping stone for the recovering alcoholic. Jung’s typology will be shown to be a means of understanding the “dry drunk” and getting beyond it. Finally\, we will clown around with laughter and meditate on gratitude\, the two essential companions on the road to recovery.

SUMMARY:Spiritus contra Spiritum: The Depth Psychology of Alcoholism:The Alcoholic Seen Through the Prism of the Eternal Adolescent Complex
DESCRIPTION:It has been proven clinically that most alcoholics have what C.G. Jung called the Eternal Adolescent or Puer Aeturnus complex. This workshop will begin by reviewing Jung’s complex theory\, and how it relates to the natural history of alcoholism. The Puer Aeternus complex will be explained as a means to a deeper understanding of the psychological causes and patterns of alcoholism. Finally\, the positive use of the Puer Aeternus complex will be viewed as a major path to recovery.

SUMMARY:Spiritus contra Spiritum: The Depth Psychology of Alcoholism: The Spiritual Dimensions of Alcoholism
DESCRIPTION:Alcoholism\, like any other disease\, has four major aspects: the physical\, the psychological\, the sociological\, and the spiritual. This lecture will address these four pillars upon which the disease of alcoholism rests\, emphasizing alcoholism as a disease of the spirit\, and will discuss Jung’s understanding of this aspect of the disease. Bill Wilson\, the co-founder of AA\, considered Jung to be a major guiding influence in the foundation of the AA fellowship. Their correspondence and its significance for the future of AA will be discussed. We will ask the question: What role does religious experience play in the recovering process of the alcoholic?

SUMMARY:The Joy of Wisdom\, the Wisdom of Joy
DESCRIPTION:Learning “how to suffer and not to suffer” is a profound challenge: to face pain by finding a place of strength within\, finding an inner guide that will help us to transcend our suffering. Although often imaged as the “senex”\, the Wise Old Man\, the guide may appear in other forms. \nThis participatory seminar traces an almost forgotten archetype in the psyche\, that of “Hagia Sophia”\, Holy Wisdom. Rediscovering and redeeming her is not only to find a deep source of comfort\, but is one of the most delightful tasks of the New Age. \nRecommended Reading: Psychology and Religion\, (CW 11)\, Jung

SUMMARY:Jung's Treatment of Christianity
DESCRIPTION:C.G. Jung wrote extensively on Christian themes during the last 20 years of his life. This lecture will look at what he said and why he said what he did. His writings on the Trinity\, the Mass\, and Alchemy will be examined in light of his thought about psychotherapy. The material will explore more deeply Dr. Jung’s therapeutic techniques as they bear on the issue of how Jung took Christianity under his psychotherapeutic care. Were his efforts to heal Christianity useful or misguided? Can we glimpse his vision for a religious future in Western culture? Will following his vision lead us to abandon our own traditions?

SUMMARY:Film: The Way of the Dream
DESCRIPTION:West Coast Premiere of a series of 20 half-hour films\, presented in cooperation with the C.G. Jung Society of Seattle and the Centerpoint Foundation. \nThe Way of the Dream is an extraordinary series of films made by Fraser Boa\, who collected first-person accounts of dreams in street interviews with ordinary men and women in various parts of the world. He then asked the eminent psychoanalyst Marie-Louise von Franz to interpret these dreams on film\, just as she would in a private analytical session. The resulting series is a primer explaining and demonstrating the art and science of dream analysis for the general public.

The material covered includes dreams of men\, dreams of women\, what dreams tell us about ourselves and our relationships\, the historical significance of dreams\, and dreams about death and dying. Dr. von Franz concludes that one of the healthiest things people can do is to pay attention to their dreams: “Dreams show us how to find meaning in our lives\, how to fulfill our own destiny\, how to realize the greater potential of life within us.”

SUMMARY:Dance/Movement and the Underworld Trinity: Feminine\, Body\, Shadow
DESCRIPTION:I move\,’ is the clear knowledge that I personally\, am moving. The opposite of this is the sudden and astonishing moment when ‘I am moved.’ It is a moment when the ego gives up control\, stops exerting demands\, allowing the Self to take over moving the physical body as it will. It is a moment of unpremeditated surrender that cannot be explained\, replicated exactly\, sought for or tried out. \nMary Starks Whitehouse \nThis lecture will introduce an approach to movement that was originally developed by Mary Whitehouse. Sometimes called “authentic movement” or “movement in depth\,” it involved a mover\, a witness\, and their relationship.\nIf possible\, read in advance; “Dance/Movement and Body Experience in Analysis”\, a chapter by Joan Chodorow in Jungian Analysis\, edited by Murray Stein. SUMMARY:Pegasus Leaping Forth
DESCRIPTION:There will be further exploration of the “coming guest” who must be welcomed in a spirit of Eros and will be sensed first in the imaginal realms that are the source of art and poetry. Welcoming the guest requires a “revisioning” of the Jungian approach to art and begins with a re-analysis if Jung’s initial experiences with the anima and a reworking of a crucial image that Jung carved in his wall at Bollingen. This image holds an intuition of a major dynamic in the transition from the Piscean “Age of Tradition” to the Aquarian “Voice of Psyche”. Preparatory reading; “Confrontation with the Unconscious\,” Chapter VI\, pp. 170-199\, of C.G. Jung’s autobiography\, Memories\, Dreams\, Reflections.

SUMMARY:Dionysys\, the Forgotten God
DESCRIPTION:In the space between the Feeling Function and the Sensation Function lies a vacant realm for most Westerners. Shunned by our cultural patterns\, in embarrassment\, intrigue\, fright\, this realm call us by its ecstatic energy-filled fascination. It is the place of Dionysys\, the Forgotten God\, the last to be enthroned in Greek Mythology\, the first to be lost when we dismantled the Greek Pantheon. Our lecture will attempt to restore some of the dignity and power to this vacant realm in our psychology.
