SUMMARY:The Emotions: Psyche's Body:Active Imagination
DESCRIPTION:Active imagination is intricately woven with the expression and transformation of the emotions. Similar to the symbolic play of childhood\, it can lead us directly through the emotionally charged experiences of our lives. Joan Chodorow will trace the development of active imagination\, with particular attention to dance/movement as one of its forms. Louis Stewart will introduce the morning. \nPlease Note: The Saturday lecture and workshop will build on material presented Friday evening. Anyone who wishes to participate in the workshop but cannot attend Friday evening may wish to read in advance Louis Stewart’s “Work In Progress” in The Body in Analysis (Chiron\, 1986).

SUMMARY:The Emotions: Psyche's Body:The Archetypal Effects
DESCRIPTION:“On the one hand\, emotion is the chemical fire whose warmth brings everything into existence and whose heat burns all superfluities to ashes… But on the other hand\, emotion is the moment when steel meets flint and a spark is struck forth\, for emotion is the chief source of consciousness. There is no change from darkness to light or from inertia to movement without emotion.” \nC.G. Jung \nFor Jung\, the emotions are the foundation of the psyche. They are central to the development of consciousness\, as well as being the bridge between body and psyche. Updating Jung\, Louis Stewart will present a hypothesis as to the nature and relation to other functions of the psyche. Joan Chodorow will introduce the evening.

SUMMARY:Male Competitiveness: The Passive-Aggressive Male and the Illusion of Deprivation
DESCRIPTION:The workshop will examine the subject in more psychological depth\, with the help of a very revealing fairy tale\, “Ferdinand the Faithful and Ferdinand the Unfaithful” from the Complete Edition of Grimm’s Fairy Tales. Our examination will also throw additional light on the possibilities of a solution to the problem. Participants are invited to share as deeply as they care to go on this important topic.

SUMMARY:Borderline States of Mind as Reflected Through Alchemical Imagery
DESCRIPTION:The workshop will be an application an extension of Jung’s study\, “The Psychology of the Transference” (C.W. 16). The twenty slides from the alchemical work\, The Rosarium Philosophorum will be used. Special attention will be given to the discovery and transformation of the unconscious couple that can strongly determine the patterns of interaction between people. The material covered will be focused upon clinical issues but these will readily apply to the everyday life of couples.

SUMMARY:The Mythic Journey
DESCRIPTION:This weaving of stories\, slides and commentary will provide an experience of the symbolic realms as well as information about them as a way to find meaning in our lives. \n“The meaning of my existence is that life has addressed a question to me. Or conversely\, I myself am a question which is addressed to the world\, and I must communicate my answer\, for otherwise I am dependent upon the world’s answer.” C.G. Jung \nThis program was first sponsored by the Oregon Committee for the Humanities and was part of the Chautauqua ’86 program offered through the State of Oregon. We appreciate their willingness to present it for the Oregon Friends of C.G. Jung.

SUMMARY:The Unnecessary War: Neurosis and Inner Conflict
DESCRIPTION:Neurosis is a war within the personality\, a conflict which distorts the normal functioning of the anima/animus\, places undue emphasis on the persona\, and maintains an unreal “self”. Although the activity of the Archetypal Self works to repair the neurotic mistake\, it requires the consciousness and activity of the ego for success. This discussion will also include suggestions for the self-treatment of neurotic patterns.

SUMMARY:My Brother Cain
DESCRIPTION:C.G. Jung introduced the concept of archetypes into modern psychology. He saw archetypes as patterns of instinctual behavior more or less the same everywhere and in everyone\, and he found these archetypal patterns expressed in mythology\, in literature and in dreams. This workshop will examine the archetypal motif of the hostile brothers\, particularly as played out in the biblical myth of Cain\, the rejected son condemned to exile for the murder of his brother Abel.

SUMMARY:Key Stages of the Inner Journey
DESCRIPTION:“You would not find the boundaries of the soul\, even by traveling every path; so deep a measure does it have.” \nHeraclitus \nThe journey has long been a symbol for spiritual quest and for the desire for discovery\, change\, and renewal. To travel this journey is to see an internal experience of ourselves; a revisiting of our past\, a reconnecting with lost dreams and a search for new ones. We undertake this journey or find ourselves on it often during times of darkness\, loss\, or yearning. As we struggle to move toward warmth and light we may find ourselves discovering the mysteries and depths of the soul. \nThe lecture will consist of an exploration of key stages in the inner journey as depicted in the art work and stories of children\, adolescents and adults. Participants will have an opportunity for brief introspection\, visualization and meditation on their experiences with these archetypal themes.

SUMMARY:Changing Relation Fantasies as Releasing Point in the Partnership
DESCRIPTION:Our relationships are based on how we imagine a relationship – and our imaginations are most lively when we are in love. In our fantasies it is not only evident what our partners could mean for us\, but we also imagine what can be loved in us. \nCouples of gods-such as Shiva and Shakti\, Ishtar and Tammuz\, Zeus and Hera\, Merlin and Viviane as well as Shulamit and Salome each symbolize a strange kind of love relationship\, be this a symbiosis\, a mother-son relationship\, a controversial marriage\, the relationship of elder man to young girl or the nowadays especially fascinating relationship of “brotherman” and “sisterwoman”. Crises in relationship often grow as our archetypal relation fantasies change.

SUMMARY:More About Psychological Types
DESCRIPTION:Jung’s seminal work on temperamental differences\, Psychological Types (1921)\, introduced the idea that there are fundamental differences between individuals\, differences that define the range of normal human functioning. Sixty-five years later\, Jung’s terms “introversion”\, “extroversion”\, “thinking”\, “feeling”\, “sensation”\, and “intuition” have become part of the international vocabulary for discussing human differences. Yet few people know how to use them with precision\, and few understand how they belong to a scheme for the differentiation of consciousness within each individual. This lecture will attempt to make the archetype of differentiation implied by Jung’s theory of psychological types more explicit\, so that individuals can apply it to their own inner and outer development.

SUMMARY:Experiencing the Mother: Her Light/Her Darkness
DESCRIPTION:This time will be spent in a more free flowing interchange between Dr. Wagner and participants. Dr. Wagner will present material to further amplify the nature of the archetypal mother in her light and dark nature as she manifests in the lives of modern individuals. Time for questions\, discussion\, and comments from others will be taken. Individuals are invited to bring brief versions of dreams\, personal anecdotes\, poems\, comments\, and questions to share with the group. \nTo close the session on Saturday\, Dr. Wagner will invite participants in meditative exercises aimed at deepening awareness of the suffering and grief\, as well as the joy and compassionate love inherent in the nature of the mother. \nThe purpose of Saturday’s work will be to deepen our awareness and strengthen our ability to connect to the deeper unconscious in a living\, ongoing way. This brings us to wholeness in our own individual natures and it also helps us to meet the critical challenge to the survival of all live on planet earth which we now face.

SUMMARY:The Cry of Gaia: Death Into Life
DESCRIPTION:For men and women in modern America\, Mother’s Day can conjure up a mixture of feelings: sadness\, resentment\, contempt\, grief as well as warmth\, happiness\, nostalgia\, longing\, and genuine appreciation and love. The emotional experience each individual has of “mother” is far reaching and complex. In view of Jung’s discovery of the deeper archetypal unconscious\, we have much to reflect upon as we seek to be more aware of and to honor the reality of the mother. The longstanding neglect and rejection of the full feminine principle in our culture has shaped the nature of mothering and the consciousness we do or do not have of the Great Mother\, the archetypal feminine. \nIn Friday evening’s lecture\, “The Cry of Gaia\, Death into Life”\, Dr. Wagner will focus on the often neglected spiritual dimension of the personal mother and of the archetypal mother. Material from Jung’s own life will be presented. Particular emphasis will be placed on the experience of the death of the mother and on the role the Great Mother plays in experiences of death. Considerations on the nature of the return into modern consciousness of the Great Mother will be given.

SUMMARY:The Archetypes of Conflict
DESCRIPTION:Life without conflict is inconceivable. The strident clash of opposites goes resounding down the passages of time. Conflict between species\, conflict between nations\, conflict between generations\, conflict between the political left and right\, and conflict within the individual psyche-soma: all are subject to the same principles of dynamic opposition\, homeostasis and enantiodromia. \nThe material used Friday and Saturday will examine conflict in the light of biology (Darwin)\, depth psychology (Freud and Jung)\, modern neurology and ancient Chinese philosophy. Special consideration will be given to the development of techniques of conflict resolution.

SUMMARY:The Analytical Psychology of War
DESCRIPTION:Analytical Psychology is not just a technique for individuation or the treatment of psychic dis-ease; it is the study of human nature. the archetypes crucial to the survival of our species are those which govern the relations between groups of human beings\, yet politicians and generals are as ignorant of these as are the great mass of the world’s populations. What are the primordial principles determining the warlike and peaceful intentions of human communities? And how may consciousness of them contribute to the salvation of our planet?

SUMMARY:Metaphor as Myth and Religion
DESCRIPTION:This will be an all day seminar\, commencing with a lecture and continuing with open discussions of specific metaphors: The Promised Land\, Virgin Birth\, Resurrection\, End of the World\, Second Coming\, Heaven\, Hell\, Reincarnation\, God\, Brahman\, Nirvana\, etc. Examples from differing traditions will be recognized and compared\, the intention being to disengage\, in every case\, the message from the messenger\, the connotation from the denotation of the symbol. SUMMARY:Spiritus contra Spiritum: The Depth Psychology of Alcoholism: Flying High Again: Steps to Remaining a Grateful Recovering Alcoholic
DESCRIPTION:It is not enough for the alcoholic to just stop drinking. The alcoholic\, like Dionysios\, Icarus\, and Hermes\, has a moral obligation to get high again\, to get his/her spirit back\, to become in-spired\, and to celebrate what it means to be free of chemical dependency and its negative psychological consequences. This lecture will concentrate on some of the insights from Jung’s complex psychology which can help the alcoholic develop a more positive Self-Image. The same Puer complex which was a mill-stone for the drinking alcoholic can become a stepping stone for the recovering alcoholic. Jung’s typology will be shown to be a means of understanding the “dry drunk” and getting beyond it. Finally\, we will clown around with laughter and meditate on gratitude\, the two essential companions on the road to recovery.
