SUMMARY:The Child’s Quest for Meaning
DESCRIPTION:Though they don’t often verbalize these things\, young children seem to be searching for answers to the same questions with which adults are often concerned: What is the meaning of my life? Where is the meaning of my life? \nToo often the making of meaning out of the external world with its over-emphasis on rationality\, cause-and-effect\, structuring and ordering which should be only one part of a child’s life-half a child’s developmental task\, makes for a kind of denial of the inner world’s need for experiencing meaning. This experiencing of meaning when it is not being honored and allowed for in children can lead to psychic imbalance. \nSand play slides of children of many ages will be shown in this talk which will address this issue.

DESCRIPTION:Jung once commented on the rich and unusual spiritual heritage we have on this continent as inheritors of European\, Black\, and Native American psyche. As a clergyperson\, analyst\, and student of Native American spirituality\, Dr. Gibson will suggest something of the centrality of a recovered and invigorated mystical spirituality for our era. \nThrough personal reflection\, clinical anecdote and case study slides\, this lecture will present an overview of Jung’s mystical worldview. Jung’s borrowing from and unique integration of\, especially\, mystical methodologies from the Judeo-Christian West will be featured in the light of the work of significant living Judeo-Christian mystics such as Matthew Fox.

DESCRIPTION:An early definition of a Hero indicates that it is someone who defends the cultural patterns of a society. Man makes this defense by keeping safe the form\, structure\, law\, order\, definition of a society. A woman makes an equally valuable and unique defense of a culture by safeguarding love and relationship. We hope to explore these two cultural values\, find their parallels and differences. The word Heroine has not been used purposefully so as to avoid the Hollywood connotations of sentimentality so often associated with that word. If the two paths are of equal dignity they must have equally powerful terms.

Similar to the symbolic play of childhood\, it can lead us directly through the emotionally charged experiences of our lives. Joan Chodorow will trace the development of active imagination\, with particular attention to dance/movement as one of its forms. There is no change from darkness to light or from inertia to movement without emotion.” \nC.G. Jung \nFor Jung\, the emotions are the foundation of the psyche. They are central to the development of consciousness\, as well as being the bridge between body and psyche. Updating Jung\, Louis Stewart will present a hypothesis as to the nature and relation to other functions of the psyche. Joan Chodorow will introduce the evening.

He saw archetypes as patterns of instinctual behavior more or less the same everywhere and in everyone\, and he found these archetypal patterns expressed in mythology\, in literature and in dreams. This workshop will examine the archetypal motif of the hostile brothers\, particularly as played out in the biblical myth of Cain\, the rejected son condemned to exile for the murder of his brother Abel.

DESCRIPTION:“You would not find the boundaries of the soul\, even by traveling every path; so deep a measure does it have.” \nHeraclitus \nThe journey has long been a symbol for spiritual quest and for the desire for discovery\, change\, and renewal. To travel this journey is to see an internal experience of ourselves; a revisiting of our past\, a reconnecting with lost dreams and a search for new ones. We undertake this journey or find ourselves on it often during times of darkness\, loss\, or yearning. As we struggle to move toward warmth and light we may find ourselves discovering the mysteries and depths of the soul. \nThe lecture will consist of an exploration of key stages in the inner journey as depicted in the art work and stories of children\, adolescents and adults. Participants will have an opportunity for brief introspection\, visualization and meditation on their experiences with these archetypal themes.

Crises in relationship often grow as our archetypal relation fantasies change.
