SUMMARY:Anima: Images of Mood and Desire
DESCRIPTION:A slide show/workshop/discussion of Anima feelings\, moods\, erotics\, interiors\, and spontaneous displays of psychic life-freed of conceptual jargon and explanations. \nDr. Hillman has presented this material (mainly paintings of the 19th and 20th centuries) in many places from men’s groups in the woods\, to a Medici palace in Florence\, to theatrer companies in France. The intent is to move Anima from a theoretical notion that is gender determined to a palpable reality of beauty for everyone.

SUMMARY:C.G. Jung: The Man and His Psychology
DESCRIPTION:By creative use of his introspective genius\, Jung\, the individual man\, turn his attention inwards in a courageous attempt to find the universal man lurking in the dark recesses of his own soul. To what extent does he succeed? And how far should we expect to follow his example? \nIn this seminar we shall consider the common criticisms of Jungian Psychology: that it is too inner-directed to be appropriate to life in the modern world; that it places too much emphasis on archetypal psychology and mythology and too little on the problems of interpersonal relationships and social adjustment; that it is elitist in its view of the goals of the second half of life; and that\, as a method of treatment\, Analytical Psychology is essentially mystical\, encumbered with an outdated religiosity\, which fits ill with a discipline designed to treat the problems of modern men and women. How justified are these criticisms and how should we respond to them? \nIt will be assumed that participants will at least have read Memories\, Dreams and Reflections\, and Two Essays on Analytical Psychology (Volume 7 of the Collected Works).

SUMMARY:C.G. Jung: The Man and His Psychology
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will examine how Jungian Psychology evolved out of the psychology of Jung\, beginning with his family life and early dreams. The implications of his solitary childhood will be reviewed in our understanding of the psychology of childhood and adolescence. What is the contemporary relevance of insights into anima and animus projection and the quest for soulmate considered in light of Jung’s experience of marriage to Emma Jung and his relationship with Toni Wolff?

SUMMARY:The Collective Unconscious: Myth or Scientific Hypothesis?
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will focus upon the contemporary relevance of Jung’s archetypal hypothesis\, including its links with ethology and sociobiology as well as mythology and psychiatry. Based on Dr. Steven’s book\, Archetypes: A Natural History of the Self\, this lecture received an enthusiastic ovation when given for the first time at a convocation at Willamette University last November.

SUMMARY:Relationship Between Men and Women as Seen by William Blake
DESCRIPTION:The shocks in the Industrial Revolution\, the rise of corporate life and the call of women into the workforce\, the weakening of the Inner King and Inner Queen have all left their mark in the relationships between men and women. Where are we now? Blake’s genius discerned powerful zones within the psyche that affect men and women and in this day we will look at his poems\, ideas and paintings with a view to what they say that is helpful and relevant now. Bring questions and stories.

SUMMARY:The Shadow of Organized Religions
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the centuries what Jung has called “the religious function” in humankind has been either nurtured or warped by religious institutions. We can see two extremes of this nurturing-or-warping effect in our own time by a comparison of the work and words of\, for example\, a Mother Theresa versus an Ayatollah Khomeini. \nCentering his lecture on the experience rendered in the film\, “The Hmong Shaman in America”\, Dr. Lavin will discuss the warping effect-those neurotic attitudes and behaviors which can result from a maladaptive and collective approach to the religious function in all of us. Particular attention will be given to Jung’s theory of typology in understanding how the institutionalization of the religious function can lead a person to behave in an unbalanced way. \nFor many\, religions can be a path to health and wholeness; but for some persons religion can become an internalized living hell.

SUMMARY:Artemis and Aphrodite Need Not Apply: Christianity’s Repression of The Archetypal Feminine Geniuses
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will discuss the importance of the constellation of the feminine forms of divinity in our time and their importance in our chaotic world. References for this lecture are Whitmont’s Return of the Goddess and Bolen’s Goddesses in Every Woman. In this lecture I hope to show that the Catholic and Protestant complexes about and around Mary are\, in essence\, a problem of the patriarchal form of Christianity which fears the feminine dimension of religious experience.

SUMMARY:The Salem Witchcraft Trials: An American Shadow
DESCRIPTION:In search for the foundation of the American character\, its consciousness\, its archetypes\, the psychologist is bound to look into the Salem witchcraft trials\, an event that took place almost 300 years ago. “Witch Hunt” has become a part of our American vocabulary\, a fact that attests to the continuing occurence of witch hunts in our nation. The lecture will seek to find the roots of the Salem witchcraft trials in the Puritan New England unconscious and the historical context of those times. Finally\, America’s “witch hunt” shadow will be brought up to date with a look at its current manifestations.

DESCRIPTION:This is a workshop taking weight gain and loss from the standpoint of analytical psychology\, that is from the source of the problems\, the unintegrated mother complex. \nWe will not be talking about calories\, cholesterol\, behavior modification\, nor will you need loose-fitting clothes for exercise. SUMMARY:Beyond Survival: Heart Surgery and the Psyche
DESCRIPTION:I think heart surgery and heart trouble is becoming increasingly common in the second half of life; if we’re not ourselves involved\, we certainly have a family member who has been (or may be). \nI had coronary bypass surgery in January 1987 and survived-I want to talk with you about the changes in the psyche\, conscious and unconscious; how the psyche helped me decide what to do\, how to deal with the pre- and postoperative anxiety. That is to talk about death and rebirth concretely\, in detail\, in myself and in my clinical practice.

SUMMARY:The Religious Function of the Psyche
DESCRIPTION:The Transpersonal Self incarnates into personal self. The relationship between Self and self is a crucial factor in psychological and spiritual development. Recent developments in self psychology cast some new light on these processes. Individuation\, or incarnation\, occurs in response to the pressure of the transpersonal spirit experienced within the individual soul. The resultant images and suffering are the source and medium of religious experience. The workshop will focus on the importance of such material for the development of an individual spiritual path.

SUMMARY:Jungian Psychology and Kohut’s Self Psychology
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will compare and contrast Jung’s theory of the Self with recent in developmental psychoanalytic self psychology\, particularly those of Kohut. In certain areas\, self psychology is rapidly replacing both classical psychoanalytical drive theory and ego psychology as the major conceptual modality of practicing analysts. Kohut’s theory bears several important similarities and differences from Jungian theory which will be explored in depth. No prior familiarity with Kohut will be assumed\, but a working knowledge of traditional psychodynamic psychology will be helpful for participants.

SUMMARY:The Archetypal Self: Intimacy and Transcendence
DESCRIPTION:While the ego is the center of consciousness\, the actual center of the entire psyche is the Archetypal Self\, the Central Archetype of Order. The Self is perhaps Jung’s most central\, yet most mysterious concept. This seminar will examine the meaning of the Archetypal Self using both mythological and clinical examples. \nParticipants can acquire a deepened understanding of the Self\, that mysterious archetype that is on the “near side” of all of our experience and yet can appear so far away as to assume the imagery of God.

SUMMARY:Like Jacob and the Angel: Jung's Evolving Position on Christian Thought: The Intellectual and Religious Context and Growing Convictions Concerning Archetypal Symbols
DESCRIPTION:In relation to Christianity\, Jung’s position evolved during his lifetime\, the evolution being affected by both his own developing inner experience and by historical events in the west\, especially the two world wars and all that surrounded them. He had immense respect for the psychic depth of historic Christian symbolism; he had little respect for effort by the churches to turn the symbolic power into literal and rigid dogma; he had indeed little respect for literalism of any kind\, nor for efforts to set aside the great symbols in search of acceptable liberal thought or modernity. He had\, further\, some profound misgivings about some areas of Christian thought and belief\, especially those dealing with evil\, and with the feminine.

SUMMARY:Like Jacob and the Angel: Jung's Confrontation with Christianity
DESCRIPTION:Jung\, son of a Swiss pastor\, wrestled all his life with religion and particularly with Christianity. He was convinced that humans are by nature religious\, and that the issue of developing a solid religious attitude lay at the heart of psychological problems and growth\, especially in the second half of life. He also believed that the psyche continually produces symbols for the otherwise unknowable mystery\, and that such symbols have become the focus of religious life and the source of great energy for peoples throughout history. These symbols are not “invented” by human thought\, nor are they (in Jung’s view) reducible to images derived from nature or designed to compensate for human frailties and fears. They arise from the autonomous workings of the collective psyche\, similar symbols often emerging in very different cultures or periods of time. Not uncommonly they become transmuted into systems of doctrine and worship and into religious institutions\, within which the archetypal symbols may retain-or may lose-their original psychic power\, and they may or may not serve as carriers of deep religious experience for future generations.

SUMMARY:The “Iron John” Quality of Masculinity: Rough\, Fierce\, Wild
DESCRIPTION:“Iron John” (“Hans”) is a Grimm’s fairy tale which deals with the quality of masculinity that is essentially opposite to the feminine\, neither dependent nor derivative of it. The poet Robert Bly’s treatment of the Grimm tale in New Age magazine\, “What Men Really Want”\, will provide the point of departure for the workshop. (Upon registration\, a reprint of this article will be sent to the regsitrant). \nThe problem addressed by Bly is the feminization of men. This is an issue especially important in a time of feminine empowerment. The fairy tale\, however\, is not a modern invention. Men have always needed a knowledge and feeling of themselves that is authentic to the phallic archetype…that does not emerge as only reaction to the feminine. How does roughness\, fierceness\, wildness live itself out in a male without damaging the feminine in himself or in the other? \nThe workshop depends upon input from the participants\, who have reflected upon the Bly interview. It is recommended that each participant also read the fairy tale itself\, only half of which is treated by Bly in his interview.

SUMMARY:Phallos: The Archetypal Source of Masculinity
DESCRIPTION:Up to recent times\, the dominance of masculinity has been taken for granted due to the pre-eminence of patriarchy in social and psychological structures. No longer. The upsurge of feminine awareness requires both men and women to look anew at the basis of masculine presence in the psyche\, one-half of Jung’s eternal syzygy. \nStrangely\, while psychoanalytic conceptualization has given priority to the Mother\, psychoanalytical attitudes and procedures have often depended upon the dominance of patriarchy in thinking and procedure. Freud’s “penis envy” and Jung’s “hero’s journey” are examples of this. Neumann’s notion of “higher” and “lower” phallus are another. \nThe lecture will seek to establish Phallos\, rather than the Mother\, as the archetypal basis for masculinity. Only when a conscious understanding of Phallos as one-half of primal source emerges can the unconscious pressure to assert it as such diminish. Such an understanding establishes the authority of the masculine and at the same time removes from the feminine the burden for masculine development and well-being.

SUMMARY:You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had: The Life-Affirming Art of the Blues
DESCRIPTION:The blues is a form of musical folk poetry\, created by Black Americans around the turn of this century\, and developed through various phases and styles to the present. This music has been one of the mainsprings of American popular culture\, and some of its products are deep and intricate works of irrestistible interest. \nMany blues songs and performances are of great psychological concern\, especially in their exploration of emotional states and in their elaboration of attitudes providing strategies for dealing with troubles of various kinds. Such psychological matters will be the focus of this seminar\, which will survey the work of a number of blues artists from various regions and periods\, from the beginning of this art form to the present day. Tapes of blues music will be played throughout the seminar.

SUMMARY:Passion and Irony in the Blues
DESCRIPTION:The blues often portrays a process in which one engages passionate reality\, especially as colored by such “negative” emotions as depression and anger\, and survives the engagement without being seduced by false hope. This lecture\, illustrated by taped musical examples\, will be about the ways in which a characteristic irony and wit-the tragicomic art of the blues-can instruct us in emotional engagement and detachment.

SUMMARY:Jung and Nietzsche
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will begin with a fairly extensive exposition of Nietzsche’s principal philosophical and psychological ideas (as probably less well known to most participants than those of Jung). Attention will then focus upon Thus Spoke Zarathustra\, considered by Nietzsche and many others the chief jewel in his crown. Several of Jung’s lectures\, complete with discussion by the original group\, will be examined in detail\, particular notice being paid to the central topic of the seminar\, the relation of ego to Self. Finally\, Personality Types will come in for discussion\, with emphasis upon the Intuitive\, a function highly developed in both Nietzsche and Jung.

SUMMARY:Jung and Nietzsche
DESCRIPTION:Jung put off the reading of Nietzsche for years\, apprehensive lest he and Nietzsche prove frighteningly alike. Finally\, Jung got up his courage in his medical school days and plunged in. It was\, he said\, “a tremendous experience.” In 1934 he began a five-year seminar devoted to a psychological commentary on Thus Spoke Zarathustra; now he as able to analyze this complex man in detail\, exposing alike his undoubted genius and the tendencies toward inflation that foreshadowed his psychic collapse at the age of forty-four. This lecture will reveal important respects in which Nietzsche was a pioneer in “the discovery of the Unconscious”\, with particular reference to affinities between his philosophy and Jungian psychology.
