SUMMARY:Individuation and the Scapegoat
DESCRIPTION:The tension between self and group development can be profoundly creative or sorely destructive. Using examples from the Bible\, William James\, Ursula LeGuin and analytic and consultive practice\, this lecture will consider how individuals may participate in unconscious collective scapegoating processes which undermine self development while creating social injustice and pain and suffering in others.

SUMMARY:The Mythic World of the Post-Modern Film
DESCRIPTION:“Reading” a post-modern film is not easy for those brought up on modern cinema. The content is often disturbing and the style is frequently strange. New kinds of protagonists have replaced the familiar hero and survivor figures\, and familiar conventions of film narration are continually being challenged. Yet often there is a gripping intensity to the stories that are told in this new way. Among recent attempts to establish this new film style\, David Lynch’s Blue Velvet stands out as a genuine mythic achievement. This is a complex work of art that records the emergence of new archetypal solutions to the problems left by the modern era. \nAfter the special showing of the film\, Dr. Beebe will conduct an inquiry into its imagery\, which probes the deep wounds that modern culture and the myth of the hero that informs it have left for post-modern men and women to resolve.

SUMMARY:The Secret Life of Movies
DESCRIPTION:Film as a medium is a resevoir of unconscious imagery. The work of great masters of the medium can be compared to alchemy\, in which the search for commercial gold becomes transformed by a spiritual subtext of urgent creative autobiography that reveals a process of individuation. Alongside the story and day-residues of popular culture that we have grown used to finding in film\, archetypal imagery makes its unexpected appearance. In this lecture\, Dr. Beebe will show how this active imaginal process is alive in the movies of our leading contemporary filmmakers and will tell us how to look for it.

SUMMARY:Film Seminar Weekend: The Way of the Dream - Day 2
DESCRIPTION:This unique program presents “The Way of the Dream”\, a series of 20 half-hour films\, within the framework of a two-day film seminar. It combines dream interpretations on film by Marie-Louise von Franz\, the world’s foremost authority on analytical psychology\, with audience discussions led by facilitators. \nFollowing the format of the film series\, the seminar first introduces participants to the basic psychology of C.G. Jung\, explains Jung’s concept of dream interpretation and examines the historical significance of dreams in our culture. It then moves on to an extensive analysis of the dreams of men and of women. In the concluding sessions\, Dr. von Franz addresses the problems of human relationships in our changing world and explores the puzzling question\, “Who makes up our dreams?”

SUMMARY:Portland Jungians Performance Through Art\, Poetry\, Dance\, Mime and Music: Playing in the Dark: The Shadows in Our Lives
DESCRIPTION:This revue-style event features the talents of Jungians in the Portland area expressing some of their experiences of the Shadow through art\, poetry\, drama\, dance\, mime\, and music. Moving in circles through the humorous to the tragic\, we pay artistic tribute to one of Jung’s most significant assertions-that the Shadow\, which embodies the entire range of archetypes\, is a daily part of our lives. Unrecognized\, it is the source of our misery and destructiveness. Acknowledged\, it becomes our daemon\, guiding us to new creativity and understanding as we grapple with the richness and frustration of our inherently contradictory natures.

SUMMARY:Witchcraft and Witchcraft Beliefs
DESCRIPTION:The power of witchcraft beliefs and the consequences of these will be illuminated by extracts from court proceedings and vignettes from cases charged with murder. \nThe universality and archetypal mixture of witchcraft beliefs as it operates in the human psyche will be discussed and demonstrated by clinical cases who are sufficiently disturbed to be admitted to mental hospitals. The difficulty in distinguishing between what is pathological and what is culturally acceptable will be explored.

SUMMARY:Anima: Images of Mood and Desire
DESCRIPTION:A slide show/workshop/discussion of Anima feelings\, moods\, erotics\, interiors\, and spontaneous displays of psychic life-freed of conceptual jargon and explanations. \nDr. Hillman has presented this material (mainly paintings of the 19th and 20th centuries) in many places from men’s groups in the woods\, to a Medici palace in Florence\, to theatrer companies in France. The intent is to move Anima from a theoretical notion that is gender determined to a palpable reality of beauty for everyone.

SUMMARY:C.G. Jung: The Man and His Psychology
DESCRIPTION:By creative use of his introspective genius\, Jung\, the individual man\, turn his attention inwards in a courageous attempt to find the universal man lurking in the dark recesses of his own soul. To what extent does he succeed? And how far should we expect to follow his example? \nIn this seminar we shall consider the common criticisms of Jungian Psychology: that it is too inner-directed to be appropriate to life in the modern world; that it places too much emphasis on archetypal psychology and mythology and too little on the problems of interpersonal relationships and social adjustment; that it is elitist in its view of the goals of the second half of life; and that\, as a method of treatment\, Analytical Psychology is essentially mystical\, encumbered with an outdated religiosity\, which fits ill with a discipline designed to treat the problems of modern men and women. How justified are these criticisms and how should we respond to them? \nIt will be assumed that participants will at least have read Memories\, Dreams and Reflections\, and Two Essays on Analytical Psychology (Volume 7 of the Collected Works).

SUMMARY:C.G. Jung: The Man and His Psychology
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will examine how Jungian Psychology evolved out of the psychology of Jung\, beginning with his family life and early dreams. The implications of his solitary childhood will be reviewed in our understanding of the psychology of childhood and adolescence. What is the contemporary relevance of insights into anima and animus projection and the quest for soulmate considered in light of Jung’s experience of marriage to Emma Jung and his relationship with Toni Wolff?

SUMMARY:Relationship Between Men and Women as Seen by William Blake
DESCRIPTION:The shocks in the Industrial Revolution\, the rise of corporate life and the call of women into the workforce\, the weakening of the Inner King and Inner Queen have all left their mark in the relationships between men and women. Where are we now? Blake’s genius discerned powerful zones within the psyche that affect men and women and in this day we will look at his poems\, ideas and paintings with a view to what they say that is helpful and relevant now. Bring questions and stories.

SUMMARY:The Shadow of Organized Religions
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the centuries what Jung has called “the religious function” in humankind has been either nurtured or warped by religious institutions. We can see two extremes of this nurturing-or-warping effect in our own time by a comparison of the work and words of\, for example\, a Mother Theresa versus an Ayatollah Khomeini. \nCentering his lecture on the experience rendered in the film\, “The Hmong Shaman in America”\, Dr. Lavin will discuss the warping effect-those neurotic attitudes and behaviors which can result from a maladaptive and collective approach to the religious function in all of us. Particular attention will be given to Jung’s theory of typology in understanding how the institutionalization of the religious function can lead a person to behave in an unbalanced way. \nFor many\, religions can be a path to health and wholeness; but for some persons religion can become an internalized living hell.

SUMMARY:Artemis and Aphrodite Need Not Apply: Christianity’s Repression of The Archetypal Feminine Geniuses
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will discuss the importance of the constellation of the feminine forms of divinity in our time and their importance in our chaotic world. References for this lecture are Whitmont’s Return of the Goddess and Bolen’s Goddesses in Every Woman. In this lecture I hope to show that the Catholic and Protestant complexes about and around Mary are\, in essence\, a problem of the patriarchal form of Christianity which fears the feminine dimension of religious experience.

DESCRIPTION:In search for the foundation of the American character\, its consciousness\, its archetypes\, the psychologist is bound to look into the Salem witchcraft trials\, an event that took place almost 300 years ago. “Witch Hunt” has become a part of our American vocabulary\, a fact that attests to the continuing occurence of witch hunts in our nation. The lecture will seek to find the roots of the Salem witchcraft trials in the Puritan New England unconscious and the historical context of those times. Finally\, America’s “witch hunt” shadow will be brought up to date with a look at its current manifestations.

SUMMARY:Mother Complex\, Obesity\, and Exercise
DESCRIPTION:This is a workshop taking weight gain and loss from the standpoint of analytical psychology\, that is from the source of the problems\, the unintegrated mother complex. \nWe will not be talking about calories\, cholesterol\, behavior modification\, nor will you need loose-fitting clothes for exercise. We will be taking obesity up as depth psychology\, that is the events in the psyche.

SUMMARY:Beyond Survival: Heart Surgery and the Psyche
DESCRIPTION:I think heart surgery and heart trouble is becoming increasingly common in the second half of life; if we’re not ourselves involved\, we certainly have a family member who has been (or may be). \nI had coronary bypass surgery in January 1987 and survived-I want to talk with you about the changes in the psyche\, conscious and unconscious; how the psyche helped me decide what to do\, how to deal with the pre- and postoperative anxiety. That is to talk about death and rebirth concretely\, in detail\, in myself and in my clinical practice.

SUMMARY:The Religious Function of the Psyche
DESCRIPTION:The Transpersonal Self incarnates into personal self. The relationship between Self and self is a crucial factor in psychological and spiritual development. Recent developments in self psychology cast some new light on these processes. Individuation\, or incarnation\, occurs in response to the pressure of the transpersonal spirit experienced within the individual soul. The resultant images and suffering are the source and medium of religious experience. The workshop will focus on the importance of such material for the development of an individual spiritual path.

SUMMARY:Jungian Psychology and Kohut’s Self Psychology
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will compare and contrast Jung’s theory of the Self with recent in developmental psychoanalytic self psychology\, particularly those of Kohut. In certain areas\, self psychology is rapidly replacing both classical psychoanalytical drive theory and ego psychology as the major conceptual modality of practicing analysts. Kohut’s theory bears several important similarities and differences from Jungian theory which will be explored in depth. No prior familiarity with Kohut will be assumed\, but a working knowledge of traditional psychodynamic psychology will be helpful for participants.

SUMMARY:Revelation in a Modern Dream: A New Image of the Divine
DESCRIPTION:Manifestations of the Self are experienced as ongoing revelations within the individual psyche. In the dream to be explored\, a woman’s image of God is transformed\, her acceptance of aging and death was radically enhanced\, and light is shed on the androgynous nature of divinity.

SUMMARY:The Archetypal Self: Intimacy and Transcendence
DESCRIPTION:While the ego is the center of consciousness\, the actual center of the entire psyche is the Archetypal Self\, the Central Archetype of Order. The Self is perhaps Jung’s most central\, yet most mysterious concept. This seminar will examine the meaning of the Archetypal Self using both mythological and clinical examples. \nParticipants can acquire a deepened understanding of the Self\, that mysterious archetype that is on the “near side” of all of our experience and yet can appear so far away as to assume the imagery of God.

SUMMARY:Who is Dreaming the Dreamer
DESCRIPTION:In our dreams we participate in a drama that comes from within us but we do not consciously construct. We appear in our dreams as well as observe them. Who is dreaming the dreamer? Who gives us the roles that we play in our own dreams? What is the meaning and goal of the personal drama of dreams?
