SUMMARY:The Evolution of the Soul
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will be based on a chapter for June Singer’s newest book\, A Gnostic Book of Hours (Harper San Francisco\, 1992). On the surface the material is a tale of wonder and romance\, but its darker side reveals the abuse and violations of woman as metaphor for the trials of the soul\, which is often cast adrift in our contemporary society. Originating in third century Alexandria\, Egypt\, the gnostic text with which we will work (Exegesis of the Soul) displays an amazing relevance to the problem of evil in contemporary society. We will also see two of the four parts of Passions of the Soul\, an outstanding documentary on Jungian psychology made for Dutch television.

SUMMARY:Gnostic Threads in the Fabric of the Psyche
DESCRIPTION:What in the ancient heretical writings called “Gnosticism” so fascinated C.G. Jung that he wove the strands of Gnostic ideas through his entire philosophy? Who were these people called Gnostics\, and why did both Romans and early Christians fear their power? How do the Gnostic myths account for the presence of evil in the world. If we want to gain insight into the meanings of these questions\, we must reflect on the curious story of Creation as told by Gnostics. Their inverted version of Genesis I and II can be read as metaphor for the psyche\, and its characters can be seen as projections of the human soul with all its manifold potentials. June Singer will explore the importance of Gnosticism for both Jung and also for those who wish to deepen their understanding of Jung’s view of the psyche. This lecture will provide background for the workshop.

SUMMARY:Boundaries of the Marital Soul: Seeking Attachment and Autonomy in a Relationship
DESCRIPTION:The needs for attachment and autonomy are as natural to our psychic life as the need for food and water is to our physical life. And yet\, the recent plethora of writings about co-dependency frightens a confused reading public who wonder if they are doing it “right” in their relationships. Simple human yearnings have become labeled disease\, while estrangement and alienation have become normalized when called “detachment”. Relationship boundaries advocated by authors of co-dependency books tell us where we leave off and the other person begins. But they cannot begin to tell us where we meet-where we are one. \nThis workshop will look at what the experts call “hostile-dependent” relationships from the perspective of depth psychology\, and at how the individual develops in these marriages.

SUMMARY:Depth Psychological Prayer: Meditations on Jung and the Bible
DESCRIPTION:The reality of the psyche is perhaps Jung’s most important discovery but it is easy to lose sight of it living in the most extroverted society the world has ever known. With the declining influence in our lives of religion\, only depth psychotherapy remains as an institution that can keep us in touch with our souls (psyches). But we need something to supplement depth psychotherapy and remind us on a daily basis of the existence of an inner world which compensates for the overwhelming power of the collective.

SUMMARY:Individuation Through Marriage: The Revolution in Love Relationships Between the Sexes
DESCRIPTION:Relationship problems form the main content of most analytic hours. Because intimate relationships reactivate archaic levels of the psyche\, notably our childhood woundings\, therapeutic efforts rightly center upon the healing of those wounds through the application of consciousness. But Jung reminds us of what ancient medicine knew and modern medicine has largely forgotten: that when a personal disease is raised to a higher\, impersonal level there is a curative effect. This lecture will attempt to understand the crisis in love relationships not so much as the sum of personal problems\, but as a collective\, cultural movement of the spirit.

SUMMARY:Awakening the Heroes Within
DESCRIPTION:This experiential workshop allows participants the opportunity to identify heroic archetypes active in their lives. Through myth\, story\, fantasy\, movement\, and sharing\, participants can celebrate their own journeys and the archetypes which are\, or have been\, active in them. Most important\, participants will be encouraged to identify their own “great story”\, the myth that can energize and enliven their lives now and in the future.

SUMMARY:Awakening the Heroes Within
DESCRIPTION:This slide/lecture describes briefly twelve archetypes which can act as guides on the journey of individuation. This journey has three parts. Preparation for the journey involves developing ego strength and becoming properly socialized for one’s society. The Journey itself is an initiation into the mysteries which help us give birth to the Self. The Return provides the opportunity for wholeness\, as we learn to express our uniqueness in the world and tolerate differences from others.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Sandplay: the Transcendent Function in Pictures of a Woman and Boy
DESCRIPTION:Sandplay is a powerful method of psychotherapy\, based on practical\, creative modeling-literally a “hands-on” approach to healing the whole person. Sandplay has both diagnostic and therapeutic value for adults and children. Since there are no preconceived ideas about “art” in sand\, there is a wonderful freedom and flowing spontaneity in using sand creatively. Sandplay allows expression of the intuitive and non-verbal layers of the psyche. Through pictures of the work of a woman and a boy\, Frau Ammann will show us how the opposites are engaged and the process heals and transforms.

SUMMARY:The Moving Imagination
DESCRIPTION:‘I move\,’ is the clear knowledge that I personally\, am moving. The opposite of this is the sudden and astonishing moment when ‘I am moved.’ It is a moment when the ego gives up control\, stops exerting demands\, allowing the Self to take over moving the physical body as it will. It is a moment of unpremeditated surrender that cannot be explained\, replicated exactly\, sought for or tried out.\nMary Starks Whitehouse \nThis one day workshop will introduce an approach to movement that was originally developed by Mary Whitehouse. Sometimes called “authentic movement” or “movement in depth\,” it involved a mover\, a witness\, and their relationship. We’ll take up the development of this work an its use as a form of active imagination. Morning and afternoon sessions will include lecture\, movement experience and discussion. Participants are invited to bring journals and/or art materials. Enrollment will be limited.

SUMMARY:Changemakers: Sibling Position\, Family Atmosphere\, and Questions about The Psychological Roots of Democracy and Dictatorship
DESCRIPTION:It is technically very simple to note down the “other” voice in writing and to answer its statements from the standpoint of the ego. It is exactly as if a dialogue were taking place between two human beings with equal rights.\nC.G. Jung \nJung’s statement conveys the essence of his method of active imagination\, which is a re-activation in psychotherapy of the innate process of individuation. If we look to the socio-political world for the projection of this process\, it would appear to be democracy. “A dialogue…between two human beings with equal rights” is the essence of democracy. It is also the essence of true friendship and of true marriage. We need only look to ourselves\, to our friends\, our spouses\, our family\, to realize how imperfect is our commitment to “true” democracy. Nevertheless\, the ideal exists\, and we are often painfully aware when we fail its requirements. \nThis lecture will take up the influence of family and sibling position on the destiny of the individual and the future of society. Dr. Stewart will look at political leaders and discuss how an individual may be “seized by the spirit\,” for good or for evil\, democracy or dictatorship in the world. His study reveals a startling\, new perspective on the family as it focuses on the largely unconscious factors that determine the use and abuse of power.

SUMMARY:A 3-Day Workshop: Going on a Quest: Opening to the Creative Day 3
DESCRIPTION:There is a center in us which\, if we could but open to it\, would give us strength\, wisdom\, and the capacity to live our creative potential. Connection with this center gives our lives presence and vitality. Creativity depends on it. Like most real truths\, this potential is hidden: the “treasure hard to attain”. There are tools for contacting and remaining open to it. \nThis workshop uses the creative arts and body movements as an opener to the depths of the psyche\, to what Jung calls “the Self”. It is an opportunity to play with color and shape. No previous knowledge or art skills are necessary-only a longing for a deeper understanding\, a joy in color and a wish to play again. \nParticipants should write their own stories-as if your life were a personal myth or fairy tale-and bring them to the workshop. What are you in search of? Where are you on your pilgrimage? Where do you think you will be at the end? Please also reflect on your favorite fairy tale as a child and your current favorite. This material will be enhanced by the revelations that will arise during the weekend. Bodywork will be coordinated with collage work. Collage materials will be provided.

SUMMARY:Once Upon a Noon Time: Fairy Tales and the Psychology of Men and Women at Mid-Life
DESCRIPTION:This lecture and workshop will explore the archetypal masks of mid-life as depicted in fairy tales from around the world. Some dozen stories from Germany\, Persia\, Russia\, Japan\, Israel\, and Italy will be retold and discussed. These tales portray crucial tasks of mid-life: transforming youthful ideals into practical action; breaking gender stereotypes to free the anima and animus; for men\, learing new forms of masculine power from a Spirit Brother; for women\, embracing a Sisterhood of Nature beyond patriarchy or matriarchy; and for both men and women\, reconciling opposites through contact with a primordial life source\, a center of creativity and healing.

SUMMARY:The Girl Within: Touchstone for Women's Identity
DESCRIPTION:The workshop will focus on reclaiming “the girl within” through: \n guided meditations that revive forgotten girlhood memories\n photographic images of girls and women\n imaginary dialogues with the inner girl \nBy tracing a new pattern of female identity development\, we will seek to rediscover the spirited\, self-possessed girl within ourselves. Those who are therapists will acquire a new set of tools for working with clients engaged in the search for the true self.

SUMMARY:The Girl Within: Touchstone for Women's Identity
DESCRIPTION:Caught between selfless devotion and selfish ambition\, contemporary women are repeatedly disconnected from their inner authority. Many women accomplish much of what they set out to do but all too often lose themselves striving for success. Without a female blueprint for identity\, where is today’s woman to look for a bedrock sense of self? \nThe notion we will explore this weekend is that the source of female identity is lodged in the girl of eight or nine. Women’s life studies show that a woman comes fully into her own only when she circles back to catch hold of the girl she was-and lost-in childhood.

SUMMARY:The Vampire Archetype and Vampiric Relationships
DESCRIPTION:The vampire myth\, with its riveting fascination\, is one of the oldest and most widespread legends throughout the world. Fatal symbiosis and the nourishing of oneself with another’s vitality-two central characteristics of the vampire legend-are also dark and bewildering elements of the shadow in many human relationships. Over this weekend\, Julia McAfee will explore with us the history of the vampire in legend as well as the nature and dynamics of the vampire shadow in personal relationships. She will also focus on vampirism and the creative process.

SUMMARY:From the Sound of It: Reflections on the Persona as Viewed Through Sound
DESCRIPTION:Persona comes from the Latin verb ‘personare’\, meaning ‘to sound through’ (per\, through; and sonare\, to sound). Sound is a vital source of our impressions about the outer world. Sounds tell us about nature. Creation myths begin with sound. Sounds evoke emotions. The voice is a conveyer of the psychic state of another person. From this perspective the voice can be viewed as a screen for projections allowing more than the contents of what someone says to be perceived. Experiences of sound are embedded in our figures of speech\, as for example in the expressions ‘I hear you’\, or ‘that sounds like a good idea’. In this lecture we will look at the neglected aspects of sound\, particularly as the relate to the persona. If you like the sound of this\, come to hear more…

SUMMARY:Warts and All: The Shadow and Wholeness
DESCRIPTION:Getting rid of the negative is our habitual Western approach to improving ourselves and the world. This often turns out to mean cultivating an idealized self-image by repressing unwelcome parts of our nature into the unconscious shadow. The shadow is then projected onto others and there seen as evil calling for condemnation and destruction. \nErich Newmann wrote in Depth Psychology and a New Ethic\, “The Time has now come for the principle of perfection to be sacrificed on the altar of wholeness.” The seminar will focus on shadow formation and projection; bipolar adversarial conflict; scapegoating; victimology; the anthropology of “evil”; and shadow reclamation in the service of wholeness.

SUMMARY:The Evolution of Satan: Adversary and Adversity
DESCRIPTION:The name Satan derives from a Hebrew verb meaning to obstruct\, oppose\, block. In the Old Testament\, satans are agents of God sent to carry out this and other satanic functions like disruption\, agitation\, slander\, and affliction. Christian dualism makes Satan an almost independent personage\, a god of evil\, yet he may still be a meaningful and necessary part of the whole. Psychologically\, Satan can be seen as the enemy of ego\, of conscious goals and values\, a personification of advers-ity both outer and inner. What\, then\, is our proper attitude toward such opposition? How do we relate to our failures and defeats\, our affliction and suffering? What are the “uses of adversity”?
