SUMMARY:Woman on the Edge: The Many Faces of Iris Woman
DESCRIPTION:The Goddess Iris will be introduced as a re-emerging ancient feminine energy being experienced by many women and men today. At home in liminality\, this earlier form of Hermes has a foot in both worlds. Her incarnation\, whether in mid-life or at the other turning points in our lives\, can bring us to the edge. If she isn’t to run us ragged\, we have to be conscious of her. The traps and possibilities of some modern-day incarnations of Iris will be discussed\, including Medial Woman\, Invisible Woman\, Temperance Woman and Traveling Woman. Slides will be used for illustration.

SUMMARY:The Body Electric
DESCRIPTION:The focus of this discussion and experiential workshop will be the currents and changes in and around our bodies that can inform us about ourselves. We will playfully explore issues of energy and service in our bodies\, as we search for the undiscovered life in our subtle and physical energy bodies.

SUMMARY:Lady Alchemy: The Body and the Archetype of Service
DESCRIPTION:The elusive goddess Iris\, messenger and psychopomp\, presides over the central mystery of alchemy and the individuation process. She is a caring\, ever-vigilant servant\, especially to the Great Goddess. She hears prayers\, brings dreams and messages\, brings help\, bears the waters of truth\, and rescues and tempers the darkest\, most troubled parts. We find her especially around turning points in our lives\, times when we must find and follow our individual paths. According to Jung\, the crux of the individuation process is the downward linking of soul and spirit with the body; Iris appears in all her colors at the completion of this stage of the opus. With lecture\, stories\, and slides\, Fran Slocumb will introduce Iris as Lady Alchemy\, and speculate about ways she colors our embodied and disembodied lives.

SUMMARY:Care of the Soul
DESCRIPTION:The great malady of the twentieth century is loss of soul. When soul is neglected\, it doesn’t just go away; it appears symptomatically in obsessions\, addictions\, violence\, and loss of meaning. Our temptation is to isolate these symptoms or to try to eradicate them one by one; but the root problem is that we have lost our wisdom about soul\, even our interest in it. \nCare of the soul is not solving the puzzle of life; quite the opposite\, it is an appreciation of the paradoxical mysteries that blend light and darkness into the grandeur of what human life and culture can be. Dr. Moore’s lecture will focus on concrete ways of fostering soulfulness in our ordinary everyday lives and in our relationships.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Hero and the Patriarch: Fairy Tales of the Deep Masculine for Men and Women
DESCRIPTION:After many millenia of the archetypal hero and patriarch\, men and women today are ready for other models of masculine energy. A unique group of fairy tales offers such an alternative. Focused on mature men\, these “men’s tales” come from around the world and share a common theme: they show men at mid-life moving away from the hero and the patriarch to a more ancient\, masculine archetype-the shaman-Trickster. The stories have a dual meaning. On the level of the psyche\, the offer men an invaluable map of mid-life development. On the level of society\, they give women and men a vision of life beyond the patriarchy. This is because the shaman-Trickster emphasizes communication rather than competition\, creativity instead of conquest\, and healing over heroics. He complements rather than contests the goddess\, seeking a balance between masculine and feminine. \nThe workshop will continue the storytelling and dialogue in greater depth with more tales\, a chance for participants to enact some of the stories\, and a slide presentation on the ancient roots of the shaman-Trickster.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Hero and the Patriarch: Fairy Tales of the Deep Masculine for Men and Women
DESCRIPTION:After many millennia of the archetypal hero and patriarch\, men and women today are ready for other models of masculine energy. \nIn the lecture\, several men’s tales will be retold and discussed.

SUMMARY:Your Personal Myth
DESCRIPTION:When Jung went through his personal crisis\, he asked himself\, “What is my personal myth?” When he could not answer his own question\, he began his descent into the unconscious and the subsequent dialogue with the Self which we now call individuation\, Jung’s myth for our time. In this workshop we will explore a number of questions which will help identify the conscious and unconscious values by which we are living. We will endeavor to explore patterns in our lives\, especially those which derive from our families of origin. Please bring paper and pen\, for we will be doing a lot of personal reflection and writing in response to the questions posed.

SUMMARY:The Middle Passage: Misery and Meaning at Mid-life
DESCRIPTION:Life requires three major transitions\, or passages. The move from childhood dependency to provisional adulthood and the encounter with mortality frames this process. The Middle Passage occurs when one is forced to face the conflict between the formative experiences of childhood (internalized as provisional adulthood) and the instinctual urge of the Self towards individuation. This conflict is often described as the “mid-life crisis”\, though its occurrence is not limited to the middle years. This presentation identifies the characteristics of the critical Middle Passage and the attitudes which lead toward a richer\, more authentic second half of life.

SUMMARY:Polarities of the Self
DESCRIPTION:This workshop focuses on the myth-producing aspect of the collective unconscious\, as seen in the form of an extended active imagination done by an artist in long-term analysis. Although trained as a performing artist\, the patient’s native graphic ability developed considerably in the process of creating sixty unconscious drawings which portray her inner journey and provide the impetus for her personal and professional development in life. Major themes include the Demeter/Kore myth from the Eleusinian mysteries\, the transformation of Osiris\, and the alchemical coniunctio oppositorum. The material demonstrates a life pattern in modern women who develop an assertive\, heroic ego as a precursor to the emergence of a deeper sense of feminine self. There will be ample time for dialogue about the material\, in addition to Dr. Stein’s amplification and discussion of the case.

SUMMARY:The Spirit Mercurius: From Individualism to Spiritual Emergence
DESCRIPTION:After his earlier explorations of gnosticism and the Eastern yogas\, Jung found in alchemy a mythic system closely tied to the origins of modern consciousness. His observation that the individual psyche produces symbols which compensate for he conscious ego attitude could be applied to dominant myths in the collective unconscious as well. Seen in this light\, the confusing and polymorphous imagery of alchemy represents a compensation to the rational culture in which we live. The central personification of the alchemical drama was the trickster figure\, Spirit Mercurius\, who is the allegorical agent for dissolving old structures and changing lead into gold. In early childhood development\, the appearance of the trickster archetype presages a lifelong struggle between one’s own sense of reality and collective norms. Weaving a symbolic picture from the development of the trickster archetype\, the dreams of a patient\, and the near-death visions of Jung\, Dr. Stein will discuss the tension between individualism and surrender in spiritual development and show how the evolution of the trickster can mediate conflicting tendencies in the unconscious.

SUMMARY:The Journey With the Soul
DESCRIPTION:Journey is one way of talking about and symbolizing the process of individuation\, just as one can also speak of the substance of individuation as a consistent\, personal identity. Both are as valid as microphysics’ viewing of an atom as both a wave and a particle. The journey is with the Soul\, not of the Soul\, since it is a “conscious” process\, that “knowing with” journey\, in which the other is not first of all our social partners but the unconscious itself. For our purposes here\, Soul is a better term than Self or Psyche because in our Judeo-Christian tradition it refers to the life principle\, a principle that includes body as well as society. \nThe Journey will consist of the following paths: Climbing the Mountain: the Value of Work; Falling into Darkness: the Value of Love; Spring of Creation: the Value of Play; and Fruition of Compassion and Justice: the Value of Prayer. The overarching stages of the Journey will be Jung’s Two Stages of Life. \nThe Journey is based on client dreams and many archetypal models. Bring your own dreams to help construct this odyssey that is both personal and collective.

SUMMARY:The Hundredth Dreamer
DESCRIPTION:This talk will focus on the challenge each of us faces in helping develop a societal goal characterized as the new dream culture. The title comes from biology’s Einsteinian field theory\, morphogenesis\, popularly known as “The Hundredth Monkey” theory. Scientists observed all members of a species of monkeys on several islands developing an entirely new behavior after a critical number of them first learned the behavior on one specific island. This critical mass is called “The Hundredth Monkey”. \nWe’ll explore the cultural background that has led to a massive ignorance and resistance to the inner world and dreaming\, drawing on Jung’s historical cultural view and other studies of our patriarchal culture. Its pathologies include fear of the inner feminine and related creative child: fear of the chaos of change and its creativity in society and the unconscious; the resistances that we each feel toward dream recall and work; and finally\, dream ego confusion within the dream experience itself. In turn\, we’ll consider how the unconscious is constantly pushing us to be artists\, mystics and scientists of the elemental creativity that is the dream; and how both body and society must enter into an integral understanding of the dream work and its goal\, individuation. Hopefully\, our work will build toward that time in the future when one of us will be the hundredth dreamer.

SUMMARY:The Near-Death Experience: An Initiation and Transformation
DESCRIPTION:This is a personal narrative of a near-death experience. It is an attempt to describe the indescribable and with this paradox in mind\, it is a psychological and embodied experience of death and rebirth\, of initiation and transformation. At a time when medical technology is saving more lives and prolonging life\, when terminal illness is striking more young adults\, the issue of death and dying is being forced into our consciousness. \nIn the workshop we will look at death and dying from personal\, archetypal\, and spiritual levels\, with the hope of eliciting through our discussion a perspective on death as an opportunity to enrich our lives.

SUMMARY:Fairytales as Mirrors of Psychopathology
DESCRIPTION:Fairy tales are like collective dreams which\, acting as x-rays of the psyche\, reveal the structure and dynamics of personality. Many tales depict gross peculiarities of behavior. This workshop will use a selection of such stories which indicate various aspects of psychopathology. \nSuggested reading from Grimm: Clever Elsie\, #34; Strong Hans\, #166; The Sea Hare\, #191; Rapunzel\, #12. SUMMARY:A Psychological Approach to the Problem of Evil
DESCRIPTION:The problem of evil has influenced the dogmatic assertions of all religious traditions\, and is also crucial to those of us interested in personal religious experience and a religious approach to the psyche. The specifically psychological\, rather than theological\, approach to evil relies on Jung’s ideas that the Self has a dark as well as a light side\, and that the personal shadow is an incarnation of that aspect of the divine. Using these concepts\, this lecture will discuss an intrapsychic approach to evil.

SUMMARY:Fatherhood: A Multi-Imaged Reality
DESCRIPTION:This workshop begins with the premise that there is no one archetypal image of fatherhood. Rather\, there are many images of the father which have been mediated by many cultures. Some cultures image the best way of fathering as “Our Father who art in heaven” seen in images like Zeus and Yaweh. Other cultures see the best way of fathering as earth-fathering expressed through images like Hades in ancient Greece and Geb in ancient Egypt. \nWe will learn that all fathers are not called to initiate their sons and daughters through making them suffer and that contemporary Abrahams may not be asked to sacrifice their Isaacs. We will examine what role\, if any\, the father plays. Some of us have been called to be both mother and father/earth and sky to our children and to ourselves. We all need to widen and deepen our images of what an inner and outer father we can become. Feminine-gendered persons are welcome.

SUMMARY:Like a Donkey Between Two Bales of Hay: The Puer and Senex at Midlife
DESCRIPTION:What images can Jungian psychology bring to our understanding of the male mid-life crisis? Sometimes a man in a mid-life crisis feels and acts like as ass between two bales of hay. He can’t totally return to or remain in the bliss of adolescence (what Jung called the Puer Aeturnus) and the calm\, deep wisdom of the positive Senex (Jung’s Wise Old Man) seems equally far away. Many men at mid-life feel that they are stuck somewhere in the middle between the effervescence of youth and the inner joy of old age. It’s time to grow into becoming a Wise/Fool but there are no cultural road maps.
