SUMMARY:Love\, Intimacy\, and the Imagination of the Heart
DESCRIPTION:We will extend the understanding of the evolution of love developed in the lecture to a consideration of love between individuals and love for the sake of the world. In our time\, relationships of an intimate nature are becoming more and more difficult. We will explore some of our cherished illusions concerning love\, see what is involved in creating love rather than expecting to fall in love\, and work towards developing an imagination of the heart. \nWe will explore the loss of the soul in the senses in the modern world\, and how love becomes ever more difficult in a simulated world in which images are readily given rather than created through inner soul work. Meditative soul practices for recovering the soul of inner senses through developing a conscious imagination of the heart will be suggested. The special difficulty of obsession as an opening of the heart without proper preparation is explored and a path of healing suggested. The format will be conversational.

SUMMARY:Spiritual Psychology of Love
DESCRIPTION:Love must not forget that she is Wisdom’s sister. This lecture explores this enigmatic statement\, developing an archetypal picture of Wisdom\, Sophia\, as the intelligence of the cosmos and how love is meant to develop in close connection with World Wisdom. We will consider love’s long but necessary separation from Wisdom and a path of return. We will describe the multifarious ways in which the human soul is beset with the sufferings and joys of love-sexual love\, love as a force in the blood\, emotional love\, self-love and love resulting from work towards individuation. We will see how love interpenetrates all aspects of human reality\, bringing about the ever-present possibility if identifying one realm of love as the totality\, leading to tragic consequences. The future of love will be explored from the viewpoint of archetypal psychology.

SUMMARY:Men and Women: Beyond the Battle
DESCRIPTION:For the last 3000 years\, the “battle of the sexes” has raged between men and women. In this no-win war\, both sides have been scarred. But we stay in the game because we instinctively sense that there must be something more. So how can we experience oneness in a relationship and not lose ourselves in the process? \nMen and women have pursued the answers to this question on their own\, but have met with only limited success. More men are learning to claim their feelings. More women are learning to claim their power. But while understanding grows\, union remains elusive. \nDr. Woloy suggests that a new model of relationship is needed\, one that will come from the images in the unconscious of men and women. These images will guide us to a new vision of partnership\, based in freedom\, safety and love. This lecture and experiential workshop will explain old myths and explore new possibilities for relationships\, and use images that arise through drawings\, sound and movement.

SUMMARY:Spiritual Alchemy - The Mystery of Change
DESCRIPTION:Metaphor and symbols are the great transformers\, the bridge between the levels of mind\, body\, and spirit. This psychological understanding of the Alchemical opus will provide the container and the integrity to lead into the Saturday workshop\, which will be directly experiential and allow individuals to have an opportunity to experience the working of the alchemical process within their own bodies. \nThe Eugene program will lead directly into the program presented in Portland the following weekend. The final work of the opus is the conjunctio\, the union of opposites. The social manifestation of this final alchemical process is the changing images in the relationships between men and women. We hope that this program will offer individuals a greater understanding of themselves and their parts in changing consciousness.

SUMMARY:Spiritual Alchemy - The Mystery of Change
DESCRIPTION:Human consciousness\, the scientific understanding of our world\, and our material world itself are in a state of rapid change. By synthesizing the highly symbolic\, esoteric systems of the Tarot\, Kabbala and Alchemy\, not as an academic study but rather as a way of experiencing our daily life\, we can understand more clearly the nature of this change. The most sacred text of the alchemist\, the Emerald Tablet of Hermes\, is no less than an alchemist’s opus\, a recipe for the second creation of the world. It begins: \n“True\, without falsehood\, certain and most true\, \nthat which is above is as that which is below \nand that which is below is as that which is above \nfor the performance of the miracles of the One Thing…” \nWhen we truly know the meaning of this text we can fully comprehend the unity of mind\, body and spirit in the souls of human beings. \nThe lecture will discuss the fundamental basis of Alchemy as interpreted by Carl Jung\, and the principles of the Tarot and the Hermetic Kabbala. The by looking at the images presented by men and women from their dreams\, body experiences and synchronistic events\, we will see how these esoteric mysteries are present in everyday life.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Stories From Our Motherlines
DESCRIPTION:Everyone has a Motherline to follow\, a set of family stories to remember\, a human history that goes back for generations. Often these stories are filled with grief and with shadows; to remember them is to honor the depths of the human experience. In the ancient world both men and women participated in rituals which drew them into the underworld and the sacred feminine. In this workshop\, men and women are invited to reflect on the mysteries of origin. Poetry\, personal memories\, and Motherline stories from many sources will help us find our way. Bring a photograph\, a piece of jewelry or clothing\, or any other article that carries the mana of your Motherline.

SUMMARY:Conceiving the Motherline
DESCRIPTION:Mother is the first world we know\, the source of our lives and our stories. Embodying the mysteries of origin\, she ties us to the great web of kin and of generation. Yet the voice of her experience is unknown in our culture and she is objectified in our psychology. This lecture will articulate the concept of the Motherline\, and how it is vital to the understanding of our lives\, whether we be men or women

SUMMARY:Sacred Medicine and Individuation
DESCRIPTION:The workshop will take up the more experiential side of the preceding lecture\, demonstrating some of the ways in which shamanic medicine brought healing to its tribal patients. Tribal healing was always archetypal\, using by means of myth and ritual\, the basic archetypal pattern of death\, dismemberment\, and rebirth. This pattern was\, and is\, universal. \nWe will venture a bit further by extending Jung’s method of active imagination with ethnic amplification-the use of simple ritual drumming and rattling\, in order to gain some idea of what this kind of healing was like. Both the lecture and the workshop will include slides.

SUMMARY:Sacred Medicine and Individuation
DESCRIPTION:Modern medicine has a highly developed technology\, but it has forgotten the quality of sacredness which was once its heritage. Shamanism and tribal medicine\, without the benefits of scientific knowledge\, have yet been the means of healing through centuries (even millennia) of human life. Using myth and ritual and a highly developed sense of wholeness\, they have promoted true holistic healing-the harmony of mind and body-through the intense experience of the sacred. \nThe only psychology of our time that honors this dimension is the analytical psychology of Carl Jung. His concept of individuation offers a way for the modern mind to preserve the wonders of scientific progress\, and yet experience the healing values of ancient ways that are archetypally based\, and so\, universal.

SUMMARY:Inscape\, The Place of Dreams in our Search for Meaning
DESCRIPTION:We all dream up to six times per night. What is the meaning of this extraordinary activity which continues while consciousness rests? Jung articulated a theory and a practice of dream interpretation which sees dream as a process by which the Self seeks to dialogue with\, to correct\, to compensate for\, and even to direct the conscious life. In this workshop we will review the four basic categories of dreams\, the structure of dreams\, and the methodology of dream interpretation. Then we will examine a series of dreams from three analysands and work together on their interpretation (Because of the personal nature of dreams\, we will not work with any dreams of workshop participants.)

SUMMARY:Under Saturn’s Shadow\, The Wounding and Healing of Men
DESCRIPTION:All men labor under the weight of a Saturnian expectation of what it means to be a man. Much of this definition is a patriarchal compensation for the fear which haunts their lives and loves-a fear they can seldom acknowledge lest they be shamed. So they hide their inner life from their partners and\, most of all\, from themselves. This lecture will identify the central fears of men\, their most common secrets\, their strategies for self-protection\, and steps for healing this inner split and self-alienation. This lecture is for men and for women who want to know a man.

SUMMARY:Working on Integrity
DESCRIPTION:This all-day workshop will involve participants in an exploration of what integrity consists of-how it may be recognized\, personally located\, and developed. Dr. Beebe will focus on the experience of the workshop itself\, drawing upon his extensive studies of the the literature on integrity to clarify the working edge of integrity that participants present. He will show us first-hand what he has learned about integrity’s elusive but resilient nature\, and his own means of fostering it\, drawing as necessary from a wisdom tradition that includes the I Ching\, classics of Western and Chinese philosophy\, fiction\, film\, psychology and religion. The point of the day is not\, however\, intellectual: it is for us to get closer\, psychologically\, to integrity itself.

SUMMARY:Integrity in Fairy Tales
DESCRIPTION:All of us desire to live our lives with integrity\, but few of us know what that really means until we are tested by life to realize our moral limits and potential. A common theme in fairy tales\, little explored by psychologists\, is this testing and development of an individual’s conception of integrity. Dr. John Beebe will trace this important motif in several fairy tales\, seeking to learn from them about the nature of the core of our morality.

SUMMARY:Woman on the Edge: The Many Faces of Iris Woman
DESCRIPTION:The Goddess Iris will be introduced as a re-emerging ancient feminine energy being experienced by many women and men today. At home in liminality\, this earlier form of Hermes has a foot in both worlds. Her incarnation\, whether in mid-life or at the other turning points in our lives\, can bring us to the edge. If she isn’t to run us ragged\, we have to be conscious of her. The traps and possibilities of some modern-day incarnations of Iris will be discussed\, including Medial Woman\, Invisible Woman\, Temperance Woman and Traveling Woman. Slides will be used for illustration.

SUMMARY:Lady Alchemy: The Body and the Archetype of Service
DESCRIPTION:The elusive goddess Iris\, messenger and psychopomp\, presides over the central mystery of alchemy and the individuation process. She is a caring\, ever-vigilant servant\, especially to the Great Goddess. She hears prayers\, brings dreams and messages\, brings help\, bears the waters of truth\, and rescues and tempers the darkest\, most troubled parts. We find her especially around turning points in our lives\, times when we must find and follow our individual paths. According to Jung\, the crux of the individuation process is the downward linking of soul and spirit with the body; Iris appears in all her colors at the completion of this stage of the opus. With lecture\, stories\, and slides\, Fran Slocumb will introduce Iris as Lady Alchemy\, and speculate about ways she colors our embodied and disembodied lives.

SUMMARY:Care of the Soul
DESCRIPTION:The great malady of the twentieth century is loss of soul. When soul is neglected\, it doesn’t just go away; it appears symptomatically in obsessions\, addictions\, violence\, and loss of meaning. Our temptation is to isolate these symptoms or to try to eradicate them one by one; but the root problem is that we have lost our wisdom about soul\, even our interest in it. \nCare of the soul is not solving the puzzle of life; quite the opposite\, it is an appreciation of the paradoxical mysteries that blend light and darkness into the grandeur of what human life and culture can be. Dr. Moore’s lecture will focus on concrete ways of fostering soulfulness in our ordinary everyday lives and in our relationships.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Hero and the Patriarch: Fairy Tales of the Deep Masculine for Men and Women
DESCRIPTION:After many millenia of the archetypal hero and patriarch\, men and women today are ready for other models of masculine energy. A unique group of fairy tales offers such an alternative. Focused on mature men\, these “men’s tales” come from around the world and share a common theme: they show men at mid-life moving away from the hero and the patriarch to a more ancient\, masculine archetype-the shaman-Trickster. The stories have a dual meaning. On the level of the psyche\, the offer men an invaluable map of mid-life development. On the level of society\, they give women and men a vision of life beyond the patriarchy. This is because the shaman-Trickster emphasizes communication rather than competition\, creativity instead of conquest\, and healing over heroics. He complements rather than contests the goddess\, seeking a balance between masculine and feminine. \nThe workshop will continue the storytelling and dialogue in greater depth with more tales\, a chance for participants to enact some of the stories\, and a slide presentation on the ancient roots of the shaman-Trickster.
