SUMMARY:In the Field of Our Dreams
DESCRIPTION:In interpreting dreams\, we are in a field of relativity between our conscious and unconscious. When an image appears in a dream\, it emerges out of a process\, and furthers a process. Psyche speaks to and about itself\, and also reflects and interacts with the world through itself. This lecture will explore the field of our dreams.

SUMMARY:Freeing the Soul From Fear
DESCRIPTION:We will extend the understanding of fear developed in the lecture to an exploration of fear in the modern world. Following the approach of archetypal psychology we will first seek to take the rather unitary sense of fear and multiply it-fears\, not fear. A soul-geography of fear will be developed which shows the prevalence of nine forms of fear\, identifiable as palpable presences in the world seeking the destruction of soul. What we usually call fear is but the bodily reaction to these presences. How fear insinuates itself into the body as anxiety\, constricting the soul so that only the most material aspects of life come to count as real\, is described. Central to our exploration will be how countering the presence of fears requires a fully conscious development of soul life\, and if this task of now having to bring soul consciousness does not take place\, the archetypal fears can easily usurp the whole of soul life. Many examples from everyday life will be presented and specific suggestions given and demonstrated for developing imaginative consciousness.

SUMMARY:Dracula\, Frankenstein and the Holy Grail
DESCRIPTION:This presentation explores the mythic import of the tales of Dracula and Frankenstein as premonitions of the confrontation of the soul with fear facing us in the circumstances in which we now live. The popularity of these stories\, reappearing in contemporary writings and films\, indicates a need of the soul to produce images of fear\, taking on the one hand\, the ecstatic promise of dissolving into horrible immortality\, and on the other hand\, the form of technical achievement which produces disastrous results. Soul needs these images to picture the impending possibilities of its own demise. We will look to the legends and stories of the Holy Grail\, particularly to the images surrounding the future of Klingsor\, dark magician of the Castle of Wonders\, to delve further into archetypal aspects of terror. In a world now pervaded by fear of every sort\, our guiding question will be-What can free the soul from fear?

SUMMARY:Editing the Script of Our Lives
DESCRIPTION:If psychology is mythology\, the question then becomes: “How does one understand\, change\, edit\, and interpret the plot\, myth\, and scenarios of one’s life?” \nThrough a series of exercises done solo or in pairs\, in writing or orally\, participants will explore the mythological patterns of their lives. The exercises are a blend between active imagination and creative writing.

SUMMARY:The Future of Psychotherapy: Mythology
DESCRIPTION:Many psychotherapists are asking themselves the question: “Has psychotherapy reached the End of the Road?” It’s a chilling prospect for those who identify with the profession\, or for those of us who still invest in psychotherapy. \nGinette Paris will offer a vision of Psychotherapy as Mythology\, and discuss the relevance of mythological passion for the renewal of therapy\, as well as for a deeper appreciation of our life stories. \nThe lecture will be enhanced by the presentation of some of the computer animations taken from the exhaustive CDRom on Mythology that Ginette Paris has been working on for the last three years. She will lead us on a commentated tour of the electronic gallery\, as well as look at new images of old myths.

SUMMARY:Inanna: Lady of Largest Heart
DESCRIPTION:The myth of Inanna’s Descent to the Underworld paralells our modern experiences of spiritual death\, transformation\, and rebirth. Perhaps the oldest descent myth of record\, Inanna’s Descent contains the elements familiar to us from alchemy as well as from other mythologies and religions. With this myth as our background\, we will explore the stages of the psychological and spiritual process involved in a prolonged encounter with the unconcious.

SUMMARY:Elements of a Spiritual Life: The Individuation of the High Priestess Enheduanna
DESCRIPTION:Enheduanna was a poet and a priestesss in Sumer in 2300 B.C.E. The record of her devotion to the goddess Inanna is contained in three long poems apparently written at different periods of her life. Pre-dating the advent of monotheism by 1000 years\, the poems contain a picture of a woman’s spiritual life in the period when goddess as well as gods ruled the pantheons of our ancestors in the ancient Near Easy. Drawing on the passionate\, personal account of the poems\, we will trace Enheduanna’s individuation and compare her passage to our own contemperary experience.

SUMMARY:The Greening of Psychology: Jung’s Contribution to Evolving Environmental Paradigms
DESCRIPTION:Jungian psychology can make an important contribution to environmentalism at the most fundamental-by offering a new psycho-spiritual paradigm that can help change Western culture’s perspective on nature. Joseph Campbell felt that the next world myth was likely to have an environmental orientation. Jungian psychology is ideally situated for the task of exploring possible new paradigms. Jung’s concepts about the psyche and its connection to the natural world were born out of his intimate connection with nature. This connection was put into historical context by his study of alchemy\, primal cultures\, mythology and the I Ching. Jung’s concepts of synchronicity and the pychoid dimension of archetypes are radical natural paradigms\, in contrast to the reigning scientific world view. \nThis workshop will begin with an examination of Jung’s life and Big Dreams as presented in his autobiography\, to establish Jung’s paradigm of the human connection to nature. Jung felt that a person not connected to the land is neurotic\, and he emphasized the cthonic dimension of the psyche. Our attention will then shift to the Greek god\, Hermes. The very practice of Jungian Psychology is a hermetic endeavor that\, if true to the spirit of Hermes\, opens us to a deep connection to the environment. The archetypal life pattern illuminated by Hermes will be examined as a basic Western myth for our relationship to body and nature. These perspectives will be used to illustrate a holisitic approach to nature education by looking at the most succesful form of life on the planet-the insects. Our cultural attitudes toward insects\, particularly the pesky ones\, to a large extent reflect our attitude toward the unconscious. The psychological significance of insects in dreams and myths will be explored. The importance of animals in dreams and the concept of the spirit animal and animal medicine will also be examined.

SUMMARY:Seasons of the Soul: Archetypal Patterns in Weather and Climate
DESCRIPTION:“Everybody talks about the weather\, but nobody ever does anything about it.” Mark Twain \nWeather and climate have powerful psychological and spiritual effects upon the human psyche. The pathological dimensions of the weather have impressed themselves upon the American conciousness this past year as news reports have given us a sense of the potential effects of global warming. Our attitudes toward weather and climate reveal our relationship to nature and the unconscious. Joseph Campbell pointed out that the most recognizable\, universal form of myth and analogy is that of the seasons to the human life cycle. The archetypal and imaginal apsects of these phenomena will be elucidated by an examination of weather and seasonal metaphors\, myths\, Native American stories\, the I Ching\, dreams\, and Hillman’s presentation of Aphrodite as the World soul\, or Anima Mundi.

SUMMARY:From Psyche to a Picture of the World: Archetypal Dimensions of Self Organization
DESCRIPTION:One of Jung’s greatest discoveries was the presence of Self organizing tendencies in the psyche. He realized that\, manifested in dreams\, symptoms\, and in other symbolic form\, the psyche continually introduces greater degrees of meaning and complexity into the life process. Jung went on to suggest that much of life presents as an unfolding of these archetypal\, ordering processes into matter\, which then assumes a recognizable form in both the internal and external world. \nIn the weekend lecture and workshop\, Dr. Conforti will present his own findings on the nature of archetypal influences in order to illustrate the effect that the have in virtually every aspect of the life process. Building on Jung’s original work on the nature of the archetype\, on more recent findings in the new sciences (including those of David Bohm\, Ervin Laszlo\, David Peat and Rupert Sheldrake) and on clinical material\, he will show that our basic life interactions\, including personal relationships\, financial decisions\, work situations\, and even the terapeutic relationship\, are goverened by the influence of these archetypal fields. In learning to recognize the underlying structure of these patterns\, we can often infer the nature of the specific archetype constellated.

SUMMARY:The Sensuality and Spirituality of Intimate Relationships
DESCRIPTION:In the workshop\, we will consider the elements of spirituality and sensuality that make up an intimate relationship. Spirituality is associated with the need for separateness and flights of the spirit\, and sensuality with the unity and vulnerability of the soul. We’ll keep in mind as context and guide Genesis I’s separations and Genesis II’s surrenders. \nWe will explore the journey towards a sacred relationship-its resistances and failures\, its characteristics and its triumphs-mainly through discussion of our lives\, our dreams\, and dream work with emotionally laden images. Our goal is to provide tools for breaking resistances so as to activate loving powers that strengthen our intimate relationship and/or make them possible for the first time. Bring your stories and dreams.

SUMMARY:The Historical and Psychological Contexts for Intimate Relations
DESCRIPTION:Intimate relationships are as ancient as life itself. In Genesis II\, the awakened Adam\, now male\, sees Eve and exclaims: “This at last is bone of my bones\, and flesh from my flesh!” The woman undoubtedly said the same as the man\, given a metaphorical and non-patriarchal understanding of the text. Otherwise\, the following would not have occured: “Now both of them were naked\, the man and his wife\, but the felt no shame in front of each other.” This weekend’s lecture and workshop will consider this event. \nThis lecture will consider historical perspectives and developments that have obscured or even prevented intimate relations. They include harsh survivial conditions\, the emergence of masculine dominance leading to the eclipse of the importance of the couple in favor of the larger family or tribe\, more complex political structures\, and religious organizations with their laws and moral codes. Today\, however\, vast changes\, including the emergence of nuclear families born of romantic love and not of family or clan arrangements. Now there is an opportunity and a necessary challenge as never before for a couple to realize intimate relations in both a sensual and spiritual sense. Societal as well as important inner resistance assimilated from our long patriarchal history impede the development of such intimacy. This conflict between our ancient history and our present society may account for the enormous difficulty in and the massive breakdown of the present nuclear family. John Giannini will use Genesis I and II to illustrate a model for itimacy’s separation and surrender.

SUMMARY:The Re-Enchantment of Everyday Life
DESCRIPTION:Enchantment is the condition of being entranced\, caught in rapture\, spirited away\, spellbound\, and living more from deep imagination than from practicality. The soul has an unforgiving need for this kind of enchantment\, and yet the modern world does everything it can to break the spell. Enchantment offers a reason for being\, as basis for ecological responsibility\, and a means for nourishing the soul. Yet\, the modern preference is for understanding and control\, information and manipulation. \nThis lecture by Thomas Moore represents a further development of his work with the soul\, but here the emphasis is on the world in which we live-the rivers\, roads\, buildings\, houses\, gardens\, silence\, music\, ruins\, stories\, art\, language\, shrines\, sports\, graffiti\, and food. It argues in favor of “natural religion\,” piety rooted in nature as the basis of all religious and psychological values. It attempts to restore magic to its proper place in the dynamics of a soul-centered life\, and recommends a radical alternative to the rationalistic and mechanistic philosophies of our age.

SUMMARY:Psyche and Soul: The Enactment of Soul Through Myth
DESCRIPTION:Our ancestors transmitted their values from place to place\, and from person to person through the power of word and image. Those images which rose from the unconscious\, or which overwhelmed consciousness in historic event\, became the personal and tribal carriers of the deepest encounters with the mysteries of cosmos\, nature\, society and self. This workshop will study some of the great myths of the Eastern and Western tradition\, analyze their mythopoeic statements\, and consider their presence in our daily lives. Among such recurrent motifs are: “creation\,” “the fall” (or primal loss)\, and “encounter with the Shadow.” Also\, we will explore the two greatest of mythic patterns\, the quest for identity and the “eternal return\,” the linear and cyclic patterns\, which animate history and our personal lives. Such mythic drama haunts history and\, often unconsciously\, directs the currents of the modern soul. We will\, perhaps\, re-experience the linkage of our modern\, often isolated\, lives with the timeless drama of which we are all\, already and always\, part.

SUMMARY:Psyche and Soul
DESCRIPTION:Jung once observed that of all of the so-called “social sciences” psychology was the last to develop\, in part\, because the insights of pschology were once carried by the great myths and myth-sustaing institutions. In particular\, Jungian practice arose in response to the erosion of those myths which once held society together and which linked individual to the four precincts of mystery: cosmos\, nature\, society and self. \nThis lecture will review the salient features of “modernism” and the subsequent task of the individual in seeking out the old linkages of psyche and soul. It has been said that Jung’s concept of “individuation” is a myth for the modern without myth. If this is so\, then Jungian psychology is not a set of beliefs but rather a cluster of attitudes and methods for accessing those manifestations of mystery which were once mediated by myth. What do we mean by the words psyche and soul\, and what is the contribution whicha Jungian perspective may make to the individual upon whom the full task of finding meaning has fallen?

SUMMARY:The Holy\, Divine Child
DESCRIPTION:The universal\, religious stirrings that originate in the depths of the human psyche often emerge in the form of the holy\, divine child. Whether or not a person is of Christian background\, this powerful motif flows through the dream imagery of modern men and women. The symbol of the holy child points to hope\, new goals\, and religious meaning. Case material and drawings generated during analysis will be presented and discussed in order to better understand the importance of this symbol in the psychic depths of us all.

SUMMARY:The Healing Self: The Soothing Voice of the Soul
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will focus on the healing and soothing impulses from the psyche that some people receive after they have experienced suffering. The emphasis of the day’s material is on the felt experiences of people in and out of analysis. Dr. Asper will present historical sketches and examples\, including: the dreams of two young students who resisted Nazi terror; the legend of Saint Martha\, who tamed the dragon instead of killing him; the Feminine Super-Ego; the Ego Father\, Son and Holy Spirit as the Trinitarian Aspect of the Numinous; the journal of Opal Whitely\, and the symbol of the Labyrinth. Dr. Asper’s intent is for participants to experience the contents of symbols. A symbol becomes a symbol only after it touches us emotionally. For the same reason she will also discuss how she came to choose the different themes of the workshop and what each one touched in her.

SUMMARY:The Healing Power of Reindeer Woman
DESCRIPTION:For the Shamanic people of the North\, the reindeer is a messenger between heaven and earth\, a mystical creature that transports into our lives healing and wisdom from the world beyond. Linda Leonard\, who lived with nomadic peoples in the Siberian wilderness and in Lapland\, came to understand that the reindeer as “spirit guide” is a metaphor for an instinctual\, feminine way of being in the world that honors both human life and nature. \nThis workshop will focus on “Reindeer Woman” as an energy which is gentle and compassionate\, strong and wild. Dr. Leonard will weave together fairy tales\, legends and myths from the people of the North with dreams and experiences related to the reindeer (and deer) of contemperary men and women in our culture. The intent is to reawaken in each of us a spiritual awareness of animals as a source of divine inspiration and creativity. \nParticipants are invited to bring dreams and images of reindeer\, deer\, and other animals that they have experienced as healing bonds to nature.

SUMMARY:Creation’s Heartbeat: Following the Reindeer Spirit
DESCRIPTION:In the Arctic\, the “shamanic” peoples who live in accord with the rhythms of nature regard the reindeer as spiritual messengers. Traveling between heaven and earth\, the reindeer transport the souls of the dead to rebirth in the spirit world and carry the shaman to the source of wisdom and healing for the community. The peoples of the North have a soul-relationship with the reindeer\, live by its rhythms\, and follow its annual migration to to give birth. At the same time\, they depend on it for their livelihood and live in the paradox between soul and nature. “Reindeer Spirit” is a metaphor for an ancient feminine instinctual rhythm of soul that offers a path to the ecological and creative living needed by the modern world in its “Dark Night of the Soul.” This presentation will explore the challenges of reviving the Reindeer Spirit as a way to nourish the soul.

SUMMARY:Dramas from the Deep: Active Imagination and Fairy Tale Work - a Playshop for Adults
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will focus on active imagination\, storytelling and story writing. We will emphasize experiential work dealing with intra-personal\, interpersonal and community issues. Through lecture\, discussion\, exercises\, and story writing\, we will seek to awaken a spirit of play in dealing with the unconscious\, to discover our creative potentials for becoming whole\, and to explore our individual places within larger communities. The exercises aim to identify obstacles to the flow of the unconscious\, to help each of us decide when to push forward into the depths and when to turn back\, and to discover and work with personal legends and myths that shape our lives. Please bring something to write with and some paper\, as well as a “big” dream or image-one that is meaningful or puzzling. If you wish you may also bring something that can serve as a talisman of safety for your inner journeys-a special stone\, an amulet\, a picture or reminder of a loved one\, even something soft and furry. Hopefully\, you’ll take home some specific\, playful tools for continuing inner work.
