DESCRIPTION:We have to consider the fact that houses are works of people for people. Architecture and psychology are inseparably bound together. If we build a simple little hut in our garden or if we are planning and constructing a complicated building\, the psyche of the architect or worker is always involved. The symbol of the house\, which contains the real concrete house\, the one we can touch\, and the spiritual image – the imago of the house – is always connected with the human being – with our body\, soul\, and spirit. \nThe fundamental experience that people make houses and houses make people expresses a process moving from the inner world into the outer world\, and from there\, it reflects back to act again on the inner world of people. This means that people get stamped by architecture\, and if we think further\, many people can be stamped by one person\, namely\, by the one who imagines and constructs the building. \nThis thought alarmed me. I asked myself: Who are these people who build? What image do they have of the people for whom they build? How much do they know about the souls of the people? How much about the interchange between the built outer world and the humane inner world? Are they aware enough of the responsibility they have for people and their environments? \nThe evening lecture will address the relationship between psychology and architecture\, the symbolism of the house\, and the inner-outer world process of “making houses.” The workshop will deepen the discussion of these questions and look in

DESCRIPTION:The workshop will review the nature and origins of Western Gnosticism\, Jung’s fascination with the subject\, and the varied mythical contexts in which the Gnostic Magdalene appears. We will carefully consider the visionary “Gospel of Mary” (from the Nag Hammadi Library)\, as well as the Gnostic myth of Sophia’s descent from supercelestial origins to become the mother of the Jehovah\, the Soul of the World\, and a saving revealer figure. Particular attention will be given to the development of this Sophia figure from Hebrew wisdom literature\, classical mythology and the Egyptian goddess\, Isis\, to Gnostic cosmology and religious ritual\, as well as to some intuitively penetrating images of the subtle body. Photos and mysteries from the sacred sites of Mary Magdalene in the South of France will be included.

DESCRIPTION:The true identity of Mary Magdalene – an alleged prostitute\, visionary and the disciple who Jesus loved the most – is as elusive as the biblical\, Gnostic and popular accounts of her are diverse. With the help of a remarkably varied collection of some 120 images from the history of European painting\, fascinating new scriptural accounts from the Gnostic Nag Hammadi Library\, a bit of Catholic legend\, and a dream of a contemporary woman\, we will consider the crucial psychological and religious significance of this highly differentiated personality of Christian history. Mary’s kinship with Eve\, Sophia\, Aphrodite\, anima mundi and other kindred figures will be explored\, as well as her relationship with Christ. Magdalene will be seen as a paradigm of feminine individuation and a reflection of the male anima\, as well as in relation to Gnostic ritual and the “Mystery of the Bridal Chamber” on one hand\, and as a solitary exile to southern France\, on the other.

SUMMARY:Jung and the Split Feminine:  A Psychohistorical Exploration of the Building of a Theory
DESCRIPTION:In Memories\, Dreams and Reflections\, Jung describes his own early life as a gravely troubled period in his individuation. Nowhere is this disturbance more profound than in his relationship with his mother\, which Jung himself describes as deeply split\, highly conflicted\, and fraught with anxiety. The consequences of this most primary of Jung’s relationships shaped not only  his character and pattern of interpersonal relations\, but they left deep and lasting imprints on the theory and concepts of analytical psychology as well. \nThis presentation will trace and explore these intimate and problematic connections between Jung’s early life struggles and core Jungian concepts such as the anima/animus syzygy and notions of the masculine and feminine. By illuminating these hidden influences in the building of theory\, the talk will outline ways in which these central tenets of analytical psychology\, once viewed as liberating\, now tend to imprison men and women in restrictive gender identifications and negatively impact their individuation potentials.

SUMMARY:The Role of Space and Time in the Puer Aeternus Archetype
DESCRIPTION:After a theoretical and clinical presentation on the nature of archetypes and archetypal fields\, we will examine the specific nature of the puer and puella archetype. Described in literature and film as the eternal child and the Peter Pan Syndrome\, this archetypal configuration stands in a dramatic alignment to the Self\, wich often results in a creative yet troubled relationship to the world of matter\, time and space. Through the presentation of clinical material\, Dr. Conforti will explore the typical ways the puer expresses itself in dreams\, personal relationships\, career choices and financial concerns. Many people with a strong sense of the sacred no longer find this dimension within traditional religious systems. However\, all of us\, women and men\, need the courage to deal with and overcome\, if possible\, destructive forces\, whether they appear in the outer world or within us. Very often the dragon is a symbol of our anxiety and our imprisoning psychic complexes. As an archetypal model\, therefore\, the myth of the dragon-fight never loses its relevance. In this lecture Dr. Jacoby will give it a new and contemporary interpretation.

DESCRIPTION:The Soul’s Code\, James Hillman’s best-selling book\, sets out a new theory based on an old idea: Plato’s understanding that the soul of each of us is given a unique daimon before we are born\, and it has selected and image or pattern that we live on earth. Hillman’s acorn theory is about calling\, about character\, about innate image. To uncover our unique\, innate image he urges us to set aside the psychological frames that are usually used and mostly used up. They do not reveal enough. Instead\, the acorn theory dares us to envision biography in terms of beauty\, mystery and myth. It challenges the prevalent paradigm that reduces biography to genetics and environment. It lifts the pall of victim mentality and posits a psychology of childhood that embraces pathology as well as imagination. In this evening’s lecture\, Dr. Hillman will read from The Soul’s Code and expand upon his acorn theory.

Facing the reality of terminal illness is the greatest challenge for families\, friends and persons living with metastatic disease. “I had to get to know this cancer\, this vile crab\, and make it pare of who I am\,” says Jungian analyst\, Christina Middlebrook. \nHow do we take in information about ourselves that we abhor? Should we include the knowledge and fear of illness in the picture we paint of our lives? Or should we keep it off the page? What about other traumatic life events? How does one move beyond them? \nOn Saturday Christina Middlebrook will lead a workshop of personal excercises and group discussion. The workshop will focus on how individuals can integrate life events that are ego-alien. The aim of the workshop is to increase skills for integrating traumatic life events.

SUMMARY:Freud and Jung
DESCRIPTION:Jung and Freud were among the most seminal thinkers of the twentieth century. Their influence has been felt in nearly every field of knowledge. In this workshop Dr. Kirsch will discuss the controversial relationship between Jung and Freud\, focusing on the following themes: What was the impact of their relationship on Jung\, and how did it influence his work? What did the conflicts and resulting split between the two mean to the development of Jungian thoughts\, and to what extent has this legacy of conflict shaped the growth and development of the Jungian community internationally? Included in the workshop will be a video of part of an extensive interview of Jung made in 1957 by the University of Houston\, and seldom seen.  \nDr. Kirsch\, who knew Jung as a young man and whose family was intimately involved in the earliest development of Jungian training in this country\, brings a personal and unique perspective to this topic.

DESCRIPTION:This lecture will focus on where Jungian (analytic) psychology is today. Dr. Kirsch will discuss the first collective around analytical psychology-the Analytical Psychology Clubs\, which were mentioned by Richard Noll. Then Dr. Kirsch will descibe the rapid development of three strands of analytical psychology in the world today: classical\, developmental\, and archetypal. He will discuss what the three strands imply for the future of analytical psychology as a profession\, and for us individually. Also\, he will speak about how analytical psychology has spread to all parts of the modern world.

DESCRIPTION:For Jung\, “the world of alchemical symbols definitely does not belong to the rubbish heap of the past\, but stands in a very real and living relationship to our most recent discoveries concerning the psychology of the unconscious.” \nIn alchemy\, Jung found the sensibility of modern science and dynamic depth psychology. Alchemical imagery in the dreams of modern men and women describes states of mid and body\, of psyche and matter. As life is a moving process\, we dream alchemically: of fire\, air\, water\, earth; shapes and colors\, planets and plants\, ores and metals\, rocks\, stones and gems; fountains and couldrons; exiles\, orphans and widows; strange couples and odd lovers.

SUMMARY:Freeing the Soul From Fear
DESCRIPTION:We will extend the understanding of fear developed in the lecture to an exploration of fear in the modern world. Following the approach of archetypal psychology we will first seek to take the rather unitary sense of fear and multiply it-fears\, not fear. A soul-geography of fear will be developed which shows the prevalence of nine forms of fear\, identifiable as palpable presences in the world seeking the destruction of soul. What we usually call fear is but the bodily reaction to these presences. How fear insinuates itself into the body as anxiety\, constricting the soul so that only the most material aspects of life come to count as real\, is described. Central to our exploration will be how countering the presence of fears requires a fully conscious development of soul life\, and if this task of now having to bring soul consciousness does not take place\, the archetypal fears can easily usurp the whole of soul life. Many examples from everyday life will be presented and specific suggestions given and demonstrated for developing imaginative consciousness.

SUMMARY:Dracula\, Frankenstein and the Holy Grail
DESCRIPTION:This presentation explores the mythic import of the tales of Dracula and Frankenstein as premonitions of the confrontation of the soul with fear facing us in the circumstances in which we now live. The popularity of these stories\, reappearing in contemporary writings and films\, indicates a need of the soul to produce images of fear\, taking on the one hand\, the ecstatic promise of dissolving into horrible immortality\, and on the other hand\, the form of technical achievement which produces disastrous results. Soul needs these images to picture the impending possibilities of its own demise. We will look to the legends and stories of the Holy Grail\, particularly to the images surrounding the future of Klingsor\, dark magician of the Castle of Wonders\, to delve further into archetypal aspects of terror. In a world now pervaded by fear of every sort\, our guiding question will be-What can free the soul from fear?

She will lead us on a commentated tour of the electronic gallery\, as well as look at new images of old myths.

SUMMARY:Elements of a Spiritual Life:  The Individuation of the High Priestess  Enheduanna
DESCRIPTION:Enheduanna was a poet and a priestesss in Sumer in 2300 B.C.E. The record of her devotion to the goddess Inanna is contained in three long poems apparently written at different periods of her life. Pre-dating the advent of monotheism by 1000 years\, the poems contain a picture of a woman’s spiritual life in the period when goddess as well as gods ruled the pantheons of our ancestors in the ancient Near Easy. Drawing on the passionate\, personal account of the poems\, we will trace Enheduanna’s individuation and compare her passage to our own contemperary experience.

SUMMARY:The Greening of Psychology: Jung’s  Contribution to Evolving Environmental Paradigms
DESCRIPTION:Jungian psychology can make an important contribution to environmentalism at the most fundamental-by offering a new psycho-spiritual paradigm that can help change Western culture’s perspective on nature. Joseph Campbell felt that the next world myth was likely to have an environmental orientation. Jungian psychology is ideally situated for the task of exploring possible new paradigms. Jung’s concepts about the psyche and its connection to the natural world were born out of his intimate connection with nature. This connection was put into historical context by his study of alchemy\, primal cultures\, mythology and the I Ching. Jung’s concepts of synchronicity and the pychoid dimension of archetypes are radical natural paradigms\, in contrast to the reigning scientific world view.  \nThis workshop will begin with an examination of Jung’s life and Big Dreams as presented in his autobiography\, to establish Jung’s paradigm of the human connection to nature. Jung felt that a person not connected to the land is neurotic\, and he emphasized the cthonic dimension of the psyche. Our attention will then shift to the Greek god\, Hermes. The very practice of Jungian Psychology is a hermetic endeavor that\, if true to the spirit of Hermes\, opens us to a deep connection to the environment. The archetypal life pattern illuminated by Hermes will be examined as a basic Western myth for our relationship to body and nature. These perspectives will be used to illustrate a holisitic approach to nature education by looking at the most succesful form of life on the planet-the insects. Our cultural attitudes toward insects\, particularly the pesky ones\, to a large extent reflect our attitude toward the unconscious. The psychological significance of insects in dreams and myths will be explored. The importance of animals in dreams and the concept of the spirit animal and animal medicine will also be examined.
