SUMMARY:Australian Aboriginal Dreaming: How It Works and What it Has to Teach Us
DESCRIPTION:You may be familiar with the concept of the Australian Aboriginal Dreaming or creation stories through Bruce Chatwin’s novel The Song Lines\, or through Australian Aboriginal art works or popular films and novels which convey something of the mystery and exoticism of Aboriginal Culture. This illustrated lecture will help introduce people who live on the American continent to the way the Australian continent has been imagined and constructed (made) by the Aboriginal Creation ancestors. The Dreaming is a very pragmatic way of telling stories\, encoding cultural and ecological knowledge and ensuring the physical and spiritual survival of the groups of nomadic peoples who inhabited Australia for tens of thousands of years. Craig San Roque will explain how the dreaming works and what the aboriginal creation stories have to teach contemporary peoples (of any culture). Drawing upon extensive on-the-ground experience in central Australia\, upon friendships with Aboriginal people\, and upon a Jungian psychological background\, he will attempt to give as straightforward account as possible of what the dreaming is and what it is not. This will involve some demystification and also some stories on intercultural ethics

SUMMARY:Rites of the Celtic Cult of Sacred Waters
DESCRIPTION:The Celts believed that Otherworld powers are available to us when we journey to healing wellsprings and carry out the ancient rituals that attune us to the source. These rites are analogous to the therapeutic journey of Jungian psychanalysis. We will consider the eightfold steps and how they may apply to the healing of our own complexes. Bring your memories\, imagination\, a notebook for journaling\, and a pebble.

SUMMARY:Celtic Otherworld Journeys
DESCRIPTION:The ancient Irish\, Welsh\, and Scots storytellers left us a rich collection of myths dealing with the relations between the interpenetrating realms of nature and the supernatural. One category of their art deals with the journeys that adventurers\, kings\, and pilgrims make into the timeless Otherworld of the Land of Promise\, what we would call the world of archetypal form. Reflecting on some of these can provide clues to the initiatory ordeals that modern individuals may encounter when they confront unconscious forces on the long path of individuation. We will see that our blessing and pathologies find echoes in the rewards and stumblings of our ancestors.

SUMMARY:Practicing Wholeness
DESCRIPTION:Wholeness is the goal of Jungian analysis. Indeed it is the psychological goal of life itself. It is also something that one must practice daily and in many ways. This workshop/seminar will be based on Murray Stein’s book Practicing Wholeness and will also focus on: \n\nHuman nature and the practice of wholeness\nWholeness and the shadow\nDream work and active imagination\nRelationships in depth\n\nThe format of the workshop will be lecture\, discussion\, and experimental exercises.

SUMMARY:Psyche at Work
DESCRIPTION:Almost everyone participates in work groups and organizations. Often more time and energy is spent in these contexts than anywhere else. Individuals can be wounded by the power of organizations and the organizational unconscious. The question is how to grow and benefit from these involvements. The individual person’s unconscious and the unconscious of the organization intermesh\, and the individual projects onto the organization as the organization also projects onto the individual. Archetypal roles are assigned and taken up\, or resisted and fought. Conflicts arise around misperceptions and misguided ambitions and longings. The psychological task for both individual and organization is to become conscious of these dynamics and to use them for further development. In the lecture\, Dr. Stein will apply Jungian theory and the alchemical model to psyche in the workplace.

SUMMARY:In Search Of
DESCRIPTION:There are multitudinous ways in which the soul reveals itself for each individual. During the day-long workshop\, we will journey into the past as a way of bringing to consciousness the ground out of which one’s individual soul – one’s individual myth – emerged. Each participant is asked to bring a journal and some form of drawing material.

SUMMARY:Merlin-Jung Enchained
DESCRIPTION:From Heinrich Zimmer’s The King and the Corpse: Tales of the Soul’s Conquest of Evil\, this lecture will make a first attempt to explore the story of Merlin’s enchainment by the goddess with that of Jung’s enchainment by the anima.. SUMMARY:The Splendors of Ancient Egypt
DESCRIPTION:In the beauty and grace of their art\, the ancient Egyptians created images which expressed some of the simple truths about the well-lived life and the most profound hopes about an ongoing life after death. The objects of their daily routines\, their animals\, and their gods were imagined and approached as vital representations of the wonders and mysteries of a meaningful existence. Through understanding the Egyptian sensibility\, we come to appreciate their world and our own. \nWe are pleased to co-sponsor this special lecture with the Portland Art Museum\, as part of our mission to present a Jungian perspective to the wider community. We invite you to support this effort by attending the Sunday lecture\, which will complement the Friday and Saturday programs and the Portland Art Museum’s special exhibit: The Splendors of Ancient Egypt.

SUMMARY:The Depth Psychology of Ancient Egypt
DESCRIPTION:Five thousand years ago\, vital Egyptian minds were expressing humankind’s concerns about the know\, the unknown\, and the unknowable. Just as we do\, they confronted tensions between order and chaos\, and sought balance between harmony and tension\, attraction and aggression\, good and evil\, life and death\, light and dark\, mortal time and a timeless eternal. \nThe great conceptions of Egyptian myth\, such as Hathor\, Maat\, and Thoth\, reached toward the comprehensive understanding which gives breadth and depth to our interface with the universe. The story of Isis and Osiris dramatizes the intra-psychic struggles\, interpersonal intensities\, and transformative possibilities of a depth connection to experience. Using Egyptian images and texts\, this seminar offers a glimpse into the resonance between the Egyptian sensibility and the Jungian understanding of the inclusive life.

SUMMARY:Creation and Recreation: Ancient Egypt and Modern Life
DESCRIPTION:The engaged and considered life demands many beginnings. The multiple creation myths of the most mindful of peoples\, the ancient Egyptians\, not only addressed their questions about the origins and nature of the universe and human life\, but offered stirring images for the first and continuous emergences of physical awareness\, psychic consciousness\, creative reflection and expression. Images similar to those we will view and discuss from Egyptian art and myth often appear in the dreams of modern women and men in moments of inner pressure and outer crisis\, when growth\, restoration and renewal are essential for on-going life.

SUMMARY:The Relationship Between Psychology and Architecture: The Interaction Between the Built Outer World and the Humane Inner World
DESCRIPTION:We have to consider the fact that houses are works of people for people. Architecture and psychology are inseparably bound together. If we build a simple little hut in our garden or if we are planning and constructing a complicated building\, the psyche of the architect or worker is always involved. The symbol of the house\, which contains the real concrete house\, the one we can touch\, and the spiritual image – the imago of the house – is always connected with the human being – with our body\, soul\, and spirit. \nThe fundamental experience that people make houses and houses make people expresses a process moving from the inner world into the outer world\, and from there\, it reflects back to act again on the inner world of people. This means that people get stamped by architecture\, and if we think further\, many people can be stamped by one person\, namely\, by the one who imagines and constructs the building. \nThis thought alarmed me. I asked myself: Who are these people who build? What image do they have of the people for whom they build? How much do they know about the souls of the people? How much about the interchange between the built outer world and the humane inner world? Are they aware enough of the responsibility they have for people and their environments? \nThe evening lecture will address the relationship between psychology and architecture\, the symbolism of the house\, and the inner-outer world process of “making houses.” The workshop will deepen the discussion of these questions and look in

SUMMARY:The New Mary Magdalene
DESCRIPTION:The workshop will review the nature and origins of Western Gnosticism\, Jung’s fascination with the subject\, and the varied mythical contexts in which the Gnostic Magdalene appears. We will carefully consider the visionary “Gospel of Mary” (from the Nag Hammadi Library)\, as well as the Gnostic myth of Sophia’s descent from supercelestial origins to become the mother of the Jehovah\, the Soul of the World\, and a saving revealer figure. Particular attention will be given to the development of this Sophia figure from Hebrew wisdom literature\, classical mythology and the Egyptian goddess\, Isis\, to Gnostic cosmology and religious ritual\, as well as to some intuitively penetrating images of the subtle body. Photos and mysteries from the sacred sites of Mary Magdalene in the South of France will be included.

SUMMARY:The New Mary Magdalene
DESCRIPTION:The true identity of Mary Magdalene – an alleged prostitute\, visionary and the disciple who Jesus loved the most – is as elusive as the biblical\, Gnostic and popular accounts of her are diverse. With the help of a remarkably varied collection of some 120 images from the history of European painting\, fascinating new scriptural accounts from the Gnostic Nag Hammadi Library\, a bit of Catholic legend\, and a dream of a contemporary woman\, we will consider the crucial psychological and religious significance of this highly differentiated personality of Christian history. Mary’s kinship with Eve\, Sophia\, Aphrodite\, anima mundi and other kindred figures will be explored\, as well as her relationship with Christ. Magdalene will be seen as a paradigm of feminine individuation and a reflection of the male anima\, as well as in relation to Gnostic ritual and the “Mystery of the Bridal Chamber” on one hand\, and as a solitary exile to southern France\, on the other.

SUMMARY:Jung and the Split Feminine: A Psychohistorical Exploration of the Building of a Theory
DESCRIPTION:In Memories\, Dreams and Reflections\, Jung describes his own early life as a gravely troubled period in his individuation. Nowhere is this disturbance more profound than in his relationship with his mother\, which Jung himself describes as deeply split\, highly conflicted\, and fraught with anxiety. The consequences of this most primary of Jung’s relationships shaped not only his character and pattern of interpersonal relations\, but they left deep and lasting imprints on the theory and concepts of analytical psychology as well. \nThis presentation will trace and explore these intimate and problematic connections between Jung’s early life struggles and core Jungian concepts such as the anima/animus syzygy and notions of the masculine and feminine. By illuminating these hidden influences in the building of theory\, the talk will outline ways in which these central tenets of analytical psychology\, once viewed as liberating\, now tend to imprison men and women in restrictive gender identifications and negatively impact their individuation potentials.

SUMMARY:The Role of Space and Time in the Puer Aeternus Archetype
DESCRIPTION:After a theoretical and clinical presentation on the nature of archetypes and archetypal fields\, we will examine the specific nature of the puer and puella archetype. Described in literature and film as the eternal child and the Peter Pan Syndrome\, this archetypal configuration stands in a dramatic alignment to the Self\, wich often results in a creative yet troubled relationship to the world of matter\, time and space. Through the presentation of clinical material\, Dr. Conforti will explore the typical ways the puer expresses itself in dreams\, personal relationships\, career choices and financial concerns. Drawing on Marie Louise von Franz’s and Jung’s work on the Puer and contributions from the new sciences\, Dr. Conforti will present ways of understanding the archetypal challenges of the puer as they struggle with the integration of matter and psyche.

SUMMARY:The Complex: An Attractor Site in the Psyche
DESCRIPTION:Jung’s theory of the complex suggests that it operates as a compelling matrix of experience\, drawing to it\, much like the force of a magnetic field\, experineces and symbols expressive of a specific archetype. In this evening lecture\, Michael Conforti will present theoretical and clinical material to illustrate how the complex works to constellate archetypal material in the form of dreams and synchronicities within an individual’s life.

SUMMARY:Clinical Applications of an Archetypal Field Theory
DESCRIPTION:How do we recognize the archetypal field that is present in a clinical situation or in corporate organizations? How does the archetypal pattern manifest itself in an initial consultation with an individual or an organization? How can the ability to initially read the existing field and the degree of pressure on the system lead to a more accurate and useful intervention? Dr. Conforti will conduct a workshop for clinicians and organizational consultants on how to recognize and work with archetypal patterns. Case studies will be presented. Participants are encouraged to bring case material.

SUMMARY:The Religious Function of the Psyche
DESCRIPTION:For many of us\, traditional concepts of God and the religious systems on which these ideas are built have less and less meaning. But if we nevertheless have a profound sense of the sacred in our lives\, we need a language and approach that deals with sacred experience without trying to confine it within a Judeo-Christian model. This workshop will describe a depth psychological approach to spirituality that is based purely on personal experience and individual psychology\, without recourse to theological and other preconceived ideas about the nature of God.

SUMMARY:A Depth Psychological Approach to the Divine: A New Myth of God
DESCRIPTION:We are sadly in need of a new concept of divinity; the old idea of God as a divine parent\, judge\, or celestial mechanic no longer serves. Many people with a strong sense of the sacred no longer find this dimension within traditional religious systems. However\, new forms of the sacred are to be found in areas such as relationships\, the natural world\, the body\, our psychopathology and within the spontanous products of transpersonal levels of the psyche. This lecture will describe some of the implications of the idea that attention to the larger psyche is becoming a new religious practice.

SUMMARY:Anxiety and the Myth of the Dragon Fight
DESCRIPTION:In the workshop the discussion will focus on the symbol of the dragon fight as we encounter it in our daily life and in the practice of the psychotherapist. The dragon to be fought may show itself in its poisonous effect\, consisting in an overdose of fear\, guilt or shame that constantly undercuts one’s sense of self-esteem. It is the question of how to deal with and overcome fears that prevents us from leading a full\, satisfactory life. Examples from analytic practice will also be discussed.

SUMMARY:Anxiety and the Myth of the Dragon Fight
DESCRIPTION:The dragon fight is always the deed of a mythological hero. Yet the hero gets “bad press” nowadays. He is associated with the “macho ideal” of a one-sided male orientation. However\, all of us\, women and men\, need the courage to deal with and overcome\, if possible\, destructive forces\, whether they appear in the outer world or within us. Very often the dragon is a symbol of our anxiety and our imprisoning psychic complexes. As an archetypal model\, therefore\, the myth of the dragon-fight never loses its relevance. In this lecture Dr. Jacoby will give it a new and contemporary interpretation.

SUMMARY:The Soul’s Code: In Search of Character and Calling
DESCRIPTION:The Soul’s Code\, James Hillman’s best-selling book\, sets out a new theory based on an old idea: Plato’s understanding that the soul of each of us is given a unique daimon before we are born\, and it has selected and image or pattern that we live on earth. Hillman’s acorn theory is about calling\, about character\, about innate image. To uncover our unique\, innate image he urges us to set aside the psychological frames that are usually used and mostly used up. They do not reveal enough. Instead\, the acorn theory dares us to envision biography in terms of beauty\, mystery and myth. It challenges the prevalent paradigm that reduces biography to genetics and environment. It lifts the pall of victim mentality and posits a psychology of childhood that embraces pathology as well as imagination. In this evening’s lecture\, Dr. Hillman will read from The Soul’s Code and expand upon his acorn theory.

SUMMARY:Seeing the Crab: A Memoir of Dying Before I Do; How Individuals Can Develop Skills to Integrate Traumatic Life Events Into Their Lives
DESCRIPTION:We all fear “seeing the crab\,” for a diagnosis of cancer that has spread is a nightmare come true. Facing the reality of terminal illness is the greatest challenge for families\, friends and persons living with metastatic disease. “I had to get to know this cancer\, this vile crab\, and make it pare of who I am\,” says Jungian analyst\, Christina Middlebrook. \nHow do we take in information about ourselves that we abhor? Should we include the knowledge and fear of illness in the picture we paint of our lives? Or should we keep it off the page? What about other traumatic life events? How does one move beyond them? \nOn Saturday Christina Middlebrook will lead a workshop of personal excercises and group discussion. The workshop will focus on how individuals can integrate life events that are ego-alien. The aim of the workshop is to increase skills for integrating traumatic life events.

SUMMARY:Freud and Jung
DESCRIPTION:Jung and Freud were among the most seminal thinkers of the twentieth century. Their influence has been felt in nearly every field of knowledge. In this workshop Dr. Kirsch will discuss the controversial relationship between Jung and Freud\, focusing on the following themes: What was the impact of their relationship on Jung\, and how did it influence his work? What did the conflicts and resulting split between the two mean to the development of Jungian thoughts\, and to what extent has this legacy of conflict shaped the growth and development of the Jungian community internationally? Included in the workshop will be a video of part of an extensive interview of Jung made in 1957 by the University of Houston\, and seldom seen. \nDr. Kirsch\, who knew Jung as a young man and whose family was intimately involved in the earliest development of Jungian training in this country\, brings a personal and unique perspective to this topic.

SUMMARY:Jungian Psychology: Past\, Present\, Future
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will focus on where Jungian (analytic) psychology is today. Dr. Kirsch will discuss the first collective around analytical psychology-the Analytical Psychology Clubs\, which were mentioned by Richard Noll. Then Dr. Kirsch will descibe the rapid development of three strands of analytical psychology in the world today: classical\, developmental\, and archetypal. He will discuss what the three strands imply for the future of analytical psychology as a profession\, and for us individually. Also\, he will speak about how analytical psychology has spread to all parts of the modern world.

SUMMARY:The Alchemy of Our Dreams
DESCRIPTION:For Jung\, “the world of alchemical symbols definitely does not belong to the rubbish heap of the past\, but stands in a very real and living relationship to our most recent discoveries concerning the psychology of the unconscious.” \nIn alchemy\, Jung found the sensibility of modern science and dynamic depth psychology. Alchemical imagery in the dreams of modern men and women describes states of mid and body\, of psyche and matter. As life is a moving process\, we dream alchemically: of fire\, air\, water\, earth; shapes and colors\, planets and plants\, ores and metals\, rocks\, stones and gems; fountains and couldrons; exiles\, orphans and widows; strange couples and odd lovers.
