SUMMARY:Anima\, Animus and the Ego-Self Axis
DESCRIPTION:Saturday will begin with a viewing of Nicholas Roeg’s groundbreaking movie Walkabout. We shall then discuss the way in which the animus attempts to open a young woman to world she has never known\, how she responds\, and how it ends up. We shall then look at the cultures the film brings together\, and how they fare in coming to terms with each other. Finally\, we shall question why the film was severely cut in its original release\, how the director’s cut restores the original intent of the film\, and what it means to us today.

SUMMARY:The Archetypal Dynamics of Relationships
DESCRIPTION:How is it that relationships\, which bring us the greatest joy in life\, also confront us with the greatest difficulties? Why do so many of us simply give up in the face of the humiliating hurts that relationships engender? Well\, acording to Jung\, it’s all in the service of our individuation. The more conscious we are of the dynamics at work in relationships\, the less turbulent will be their effects on us. In a little-known section of Volume VII of the Collected Works [para 374-406]\, Jung speaks of the “mana personality.” This archetypal element holds the key to understanding why relationships can become problematic. This weekend we shall look at the dynamics of relationship. We shall focus particularly on the anima and animus\, those bridge dynamics that connect the ego with the Self.  \nFriday night we’ll review Graham Greene’s The End of the Affair\, which can either be read in book form or seen in the movie (currently in release). What can we learn from a man’s encounter with the Self\, as facilitated by his anima\, which is fixated on a woman with whom he is having an affair?

Existing within both the internal world of psyche and the outer natural world\, archetypal patterns are expressions of an innate ordering process which gives matter its specific form and design. We find these deeply textured patterns present within the world of fairy tales\, myths\, and dreams. We can see similar archetypal patterns expressed in our architectural designs\, cities\, cultures\, and even on a personal level in our choice of spouse\, employee\, or therapist. In fact\, with a discerning eye\, we can often intuit the expression of the destiny that is suggested by the patterns established within our lives. \nIn this lecture and workshop Dr. Conforti will discuss the formation of patterns and their relationship to archetypes. Much attention will be given to the work of what he terms “Archetypal Pattern Recognition”\, and its application with the therapeutic\, personal\, corporate and global arenas.

SUMMARY:From Bewitchment to Enchantment: Transformational Process in the Psychoanalysis of Early Trauma
DESCRIPTION:Patients who have suffered severe early trauma often find themselves bewitched by dark tyrannical voices assaulting them from within\, leading to intense anxiety and depression. In dream work with such patients\, the dark inner voices reveal themselves as both archaic and typical – hence archetypal – personifications whose inner purpose seems to be the defense of a vulnerable core of selfhood to make sure it is never violated again. However\, in defending the true self against further trauma\, the archetypal defenses also persecute and demoralize it\, cutting off all hope for life-in-relationship to others. Therefore the positive side of the Self cannot constellate and the individuation process cannot get started. In successful depth psychotherapy these archetypal defenses slowly lose their power as their bewitching energy slowly becomes humanized in the transference and is transmuted into a mature capacity for love and creative living (enchantment). In this workshop\, clinical material as well as the Grimm’s fairy tale Fitcher’s Bird (sometimes called Fitcher’s Vogel) will be utilized to illustrate this process. Attendees are asked to read the tale before the workshop.

DESCRIPTION:Experiences in early childhood that cause unbearable psychic pain or anxiety (trauma) can leave the personality and the human spirit threatened with destruction. In this lecture\, using dream examples from the clinical situation and the fairy tale of Rapunzel\, we will see how an archetypal defense emerges to save the imperishable human spirit from further trauma\, but at the price of encapsulating a core of selfhood\, thus cutting it off from life. Psychotherapy of this trauma complex will be discussed.

Although it has shamanic roots and Taoist content\, the I Ching is one of the foundations of Confucian philosophy\, which places emphasis on the correct handling of situations. In the West\, students of C.G. Jung’s psychology have turned to the I Ching when an archetypal issue demands an ethical standpoint. In this lecture\, Dr. Beebe will relate the philosophy underlying this ancient text to the psychology of integrity that has been developing for Jungian analysis.

DESCRIPTION:For Jung\, life is paradox\, so it is not surprising that he described his most important ideas in paradoxical ways. On the one hand\, active imagination is a meditative procedure or expressive technique meant to be used by the patient alone\, away from the analyst. On the other hand\, by linking active imagination to his symbolic method of dream interpretation and to the dynamics of the therapeutic relationship\, Jung seems to be laying the groundwork for a comprehensive method of psychotherapy. In its deepest sense\, active imagination is a central\, self-reflective psychological attitude drawing from the creative resources of human culture: aesthetic\, religious\, philosophical\, and social.

DESCRIPTION:Why did Orpheus lose his bride on the day they were to be married? Are the reasons similar to those which cause failure in relationships today? Orpheus was unwilling to accept this loss\, and he became the only mortal in Greek mythology to risk his own life by descending into the underworld to retrieve his beloved. His gift for music rivaled that of the gods\, enabling him to charm the King and Queen of Hades into releasing his newly deceased bride. Orpheus was recognized as the most important poet in Greek mythology. This lecture will include images from the myth of Orpheus to illuminate the contemporary problem between men and women\, and between the human species and nature.

SUMMARY:“Dead Drunk\, Good God”: The Myth of Dionysus as a Basis for Understanding and Dealing With Substance Abuse
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will continue from the basis of an understanding of how ancient aboriginal creation stories work\, but take it into the European domain by introducing participants to the way ancient European creation stories operate in ways similar to the aboriginal. This will include showing a video performance and documentary video of The Sugarman Project\, a retelling in Central Australia of the ancient Greek Dionysos epic in terms of contemporary cultural dismemberment and alcohol and drug intoxication and recovery. Craig will show how the European story is helping Aboriginal people to come to grips mentally with the impact of alcohol\, but carry the paradigm further to show how Dionysos as a “dreaming story” has potential especially for use as a participatory initiation drama for young people of Australia or even America. He wishes to invite you to consider that we may have available to us a tool which can help handle both the creative and destructive sides of intoxication\, by a radical new interpretation of our own cultural source material\, in much the same way as the aboriginal people rely upon their creation stories for survival. The workshop will include a showing of the video\, a display of paintings made for the project\, and some rehearsal workshop performance of selected parts of the Dionysos/Sugarman script.
