SUMMARY:Doorways of Initiation
DESCRIPTION:Oregon Friends of Jung\, in partnership with The Pacific Northwest Society of Jungian Analysts (PNSJA)\, continues our series of seminars designed to deepen your knowledge of Jungian psychology. You’ll have an opportunity to learn from and engage with Analysts who are experts in their fields. \nThe process of individuation leads us through a series of initiations throughout our lifetime. Initiations urge—and sometimes thrust—us into transitional terrain where we find ourselves disconnected from the familiar\, compelled to confront unknown forces\, and invited to discover the new. In this seminar\, we will explore potential doorways of initiation. These include inner energies\, at times forbidden\, which well up and press toward growth; bodily illness; and collective events like the pandemic. Through presentation\, discussion and engagement with fairy tales and dreams\, we will explore how we might consent to the initiations that arrive and serve our becoming more of who we are. \nDates and Times\n\nSundays from 1:00—3:00pm PST via Zoom Meeting\n\nSchedule\n\nJanuary 28 – Maribeth Kallemeyn\nFebruary 4  – Maribeth Kallemeyn\nFebruary 11 – Maribeth Kallemeyn\nFebruary 25 – Kristin Funk\nMarch 3 – Kristin Funk\nMarch 10 – Kristin Funk\n\nCost\n\n12 hours of instruction: $205 (OFJ members: $195)\nSorry\, we are unable to offer refunds.\nContinuing Education Credits are available from PNSJA\, with one hour of CE credit for each hour of attendance. CEUs will be available for purchase\, at a cost of $15\, which will cover all CEUs earned over the six-session seminar.\n\nReading\nReading assignments and material will be sent to participants in advance of the start of the seminar\, and may be supplemented during the seminar. \nSeminar Size\n\nAttendance is limited to 15 people\nIf seminar fills\, and you would like to be added to our wait-list\, please write us at info@ofj.org. If you have any questions\, please call 503-223-3080.\n\nSeminar Leaders\n\n\n\n\nKristin Funk\, MA\, LCSW\, is a Jungian Analyst in private practice in Eugene\, Oregon. She received her diploma in 2019 from the C.G. Jung Institute Pacific Northwest and is an active member of the Pacific Northwest Society of Jungian Analysts. SUMMARY:When Psyche Sings: Jungian Music Psychotherapy
DESCRIPTION:The experiential workshop continues to deepen the process of hearing what cannot yet be seen\, and invites us to listen\, locate and experience those acoustic images\, both imaginal and material\, that play a role in our affective and archetypal engagement with our world. We will explore the contribution that musical processes offer to the wholeness and teleology of the individuation process intra-personally\, relationally\, and collectively. \nJoel Kroeker writes: \nDear workshop participants\,  \nWelcome to this exploration of the relationship between Music and Psyche. This kinship connection has been a long-held fascination of mine. For me (and perhaps for you too)\, music is everywhere in my life\, both waking and sleeping. I listen to it\, play it\, imagine it\, create it and even occasionally dream about it. In fact\, I realized at a young age that the experience of being “in music” feels a lot like being “in a dream.” This initial musical dreamlike quality informed the next four decades of my life as I moved through my academic career (in composition and ethnomusicology)\, my music career (as composer\, improvisational Jazz artist and singer-songwriter) and now as a music-centred psychotherapist and psychoanalyst.  \nEventually I had the rare opportunity to spend time with Jung’s grandson\, Dieter Baumann\, exploring together his musical experiences with his grandfather as well as Jung’s ideas about listening to the natural world (and even the voice of one’s patient) as music itself. These precious interactions felt\, at times\, as if I was sitting with old Jung himself\, as we discussed these first hand musical moments\, which amplified what I’d already explored deeply in Jung’s Collected Works.  \nThis relationship between musicking and dreaming has also informed how I hear and experience the world. For me\, music is a territory or location for psycho-spiritual development\, which transcends language\, offering us a chance to hear what cannot yet be seen within ourselves. Music is a waking dream with a soundtrack and I’ve found it to be a rich realm for deeply contemplative practice.  \nAfter working psychotherapeutically with hundreds of patients\, families and groups\, sharing music with audiences around the world and my own eventual formulation of Archetypal Music Psychotherapy\, my passion for this enigmatic alchemical relationship between Music and Psyche still burns as bright as ever\, and I’m thrilled that you’re considering to join us in this exploration. \n

SUMMARY:When Psyche Sings: Jungian Music Psychotherapy
DESCRIPTION:Music is everywhere in our lives\, both waking and sleeping\, inside and out. But much of our musical ecosystem remains unheard in a state of non-representation. We explore the place of the acoustic imaginal within our psychic ecology and our current fractured world of splitting and polarization. The perception of sound triggers psychic contents\, and music mediates between our internal and external experience of consciousness through its affective impact on our symbolic imagination. We will deeply listen together to the soundscape metabolization process of our auditory digestive system toward the fundamental psychoanalytic goal of hearing what cannot yet be seen. By distilling music into its basic archetypal elements\, an approach is illustrated for working with musical symbols within analysis\, referred to as Archetypal Music Psychotherapy.

SUMMARY:The Art of Archetypal Astrology
DESCRIPTION:Depth psychology and archetypal astrology are complementary disciplines. This workshop offers a basic foundation in astrological techniques which can be applied to psychological practice\, whether as a clinician or for personal inquiry. A brief history of archetypes\, the symbolism of the planets and the zodiac\, planetary aspects\, and the procedure for calculating transits will all be taught\, along with examples from art\, culture\, and history. This workshop may be a gateway to astrology for some\, while it can also be a deepening of the archetypal perspective for those already with an astrological practice.

SUMMARY:Jung’s Relationship to Astrology
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, new scholarship has been emerging demonstrating the essential role the discipline of astrology played in the development and practice of C. G. Jung’s analytical psychology. In 1911\, Jung wrote a letter to Freud in which he said that his nights were occupied with the study of astrology\, to which Freud responded that Jung would be “accused of mysticism.” Jung kept his practice of astrology relatively concealed\, but based upon evidence in his own writings\, as well as statements he made late in his life\, Jung was drawing on astrological wisdom regularly for both personal use and with his patients. \nDrawing on the research of Liz Greene\, Keiron Le Grice\, and Safron Rossi\, this presentation will demonstrate the role astrology played in Jung’s analytic practice\, as well as the significant ways in which he drew on astrological symbolism in the transformative process of creating The Red Book. By understanding how astrology influenced the development of Jungian psychology—and how depth psychology has subsequently shaped modern astrology—we can see how the astrological discipline can complement\, enhance\, and deepen the psychotherapy practiced today.

SUMMARY:What We Can Still Learn from Depth Psychology\, or Need to Remember
DESCRIPTION:Jung’s insights are still not grasped or fully appreciated in our time. Far from it. This presentation will explore seven ideas regarding what we can gain from an engagement with our own depths\, and what tools we may employ to assist us in this exploration into ourselves.

SUMMARY:Fear\, Skepticism\, Lassitude: The Recovery of an Inner Life
DESCRIPTION:Resistance is always in due proportion to the anxiety generated by some invitation or challenge. Inside of each of us is continuing civil conflict\, and typically our protective instincts are easily intimidated by the magnitude of the tasks life brings us. Moreover\, we are often flooded with skepticism regarding our inherent resources for the trial\, and an internal aversion to the struggle. These engagements\, these battles of outer and inner worlds\, are only resolved when we are led to a change of attitude\, a riskier but more considered intent\, and a consistent\, daily showing up to tilt the balance between regression and progression.

SUMMARY:The Trauma of Exile through a Jungian Lens
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will explore how Jungian analysis is uniquely suited to working with the exile complex. To deepen the understanding of the exile complex\, participants will be prompted to recall a personal experience with the feelings of exile (e.g.\, where one felt like an outsider\, unmirrored\, out of place)\, briefly journal and follow its thread\, and invite the “Third” to produce a new sense or image of mythic centering (as discussed in the Lady Liberty example on Friday night). According to each person’s comfort level\, participants will be invited to share and discuss this opening to Jung’s Transcendent Function.

SUMMARY:The Trauma of Exile through a Jungian Lens
DESCRIPTION:We will focus on how the trauma of political exile splits and shapes the psyche of displaced individuals\, making their lives psychologically conflicted and leading to feelings of incongruity. Through the amplification of a fairy tale\, dreamwork\, active imagination\, and the transcendent function\, we will explore how Jungian psychology can assist displaced persons in fashioning a new mythic center that grounds the uncentered\, culturally diverse self-states that have developed from acculturation. We will also discuss the universality of the exile complex as a human experience that often causes one to feel conflicted and displaced from family\, community\, and society.

SUMMARY:Re-enchantment; Synchronicity; the Psychoid Imagination
DESCRIPTION:Beginning with exercises to assist in suspending everyday attachments to reductive rationality\, participants will be encouraged to engage in guided imaginative encounters. These are often marked by a lived experience of wonder so natural in early childhood\, but often set aside or suppressed by traditional education. Recovery of the vibrancy of experiences associated with wonder provides access and fosters expansion of eco-spiritual potentials inherent in our souls. Through open discussion amongst participants linking wonder with a wide range of synchronistic experiences\, the collective wisdom of the group will be invited to explore the hidden potentials herein for healing of persons\, societies\, and the ecosphere.

SUMMARY:Re-enchantment; Synchronicity; the Psychoid Imagination
DESCRIPTION:As we collectively enter more deeply into the paradigm shift towards complexity marking the 21st century\, some of Jung’s most advanced concepts are gaining renewed vitality and acceptance. This lecture will highlight links between individuation and synchronicity found in the Red Book which are contributing to new visions of reality.  We will also explore the importance of the psychoid imagination as it is emerging in response to the recent COVID pandemic. These threads will be woven into the cultural movement towards re-enchantment of the world.

SUMMARY:Trauma\, Innocence and the Core Complex of the Dissociating Psyche
DESCRIPTION:Following early relational trauma\, a dissociative system is set up in the psyche\, composed of part-self personifications including an innocent/wounded child and his or her archetypal protectors. The main purpose of this Self Care System is to keep the innocent/injured child-self separated from the suffering of affective experience that might annihilate (or transform) it. Dreams during the psychotherapy process give us a picture of this core complex and its defensive “efforts” on behalf of the “child.” Working with these archaic energies in the transference can be a stormy affair. The Friday Talk will address and illustrate these archaic energies in the core complex that frequently stretch our understanding of the analytic situation in the direction of enactments and counter-enactments.

SUMMARY:Jung\, Hermes\, the Tao and Complexity Theory
DESCRIPTION:The Greek myth of Hermes stealing Apollo’s cattle explicates the dilemmas we humans face in relating to each other and to the environment. The secret is in the symbol of his wand: a figure 8 with a gap at the top. Hermes is about the transactions in the gap between opposites (the two upper arms on the 8). As such\, Hermes is the god of ecopsychology because he is the god of businessmen\, psychologists\, diplomats\, the advertising that sustains our consumer culture\, and the human-environment relationship. Hermes’ association with the originating source\, what happens between non-existence and existence—is symbolically associated with the Tao and with  complexity theory—the mathematics of what happens between stability and chaos when change occurs.

SUMMARY:Ecopsychology and the Environmental Catastrophe
DESCRIPTION:At the 2022 climate change meetings in Egypt\, the UN Secretary General said\, “We are in the fight of our lives\, and we are losing.” Psychology has been embarrassingly slow to respond to the frightening deterioration of our planetary environment\, but ecopsychology emerged in the 1990’s to address the issue. A case will be made that a Jungian version of ecopsychology offers the best framework for understanding the problems at the deepest levels and gives us a vision for the future. Hermes is the main god that will lead us into a better future or a continuation on a path to oblivion.

SUMMARY:Sweating The Salmon
DESCRIPTION:Our psyche is hungry for manifestation in the world\, and through its appetites the soul makes itself known to us. The workshop delves into the symbolism of cooking and the personal and cultural myths of cooking and feasting. We amplify and work with archetypal dreams to reveal\, through the ordinary and mundane imagery of the kitchen\, its tools\, methods and environment\, possibilities for healing and glimpses of spiritual truth.

SUMMARY:The Coniunctio Gastronomique: God Becomes Flesh
DESCRIPTION:Cooking\, like alchemy\, is the transformation of basic ingredients into refined substances. Psychologically\, this alchemical process represents the development of the personality.  Understanding the psyche through the art and practices of cooking can heal the mind-body split that is the primary wound of modern life. The food we purchase or grow\, cook and eat\, link us to the cosmos: then God becomes flesh\, (in-carne). We become what we eat. The lecture invites us into the sensuous\, alchemical temenos of the kitchen.

SUMMARY:Reclaiming the Wisdom of Ancient Myths
DESCRIPTION:C.G. Jung’s revelation of the mythopoetic dimension of the human psyche\, i.e.\, its story-making structure\, gave credence to his hypothesis of the collective unconscious\, its archetypal images and their healing intent. In this seminar\, we explore the wisdom hidden in the ancient Greek myths of Myrrha and the great god Pan. Together\, we will discover the meanings and guidance these age-old stories can offer us today. \nIn the myth of Myrrha\, we examine the theme of incest as perpetrated by a daughter with her father. We find that a repugnant act such as this appears in biblical stories\, as well\, and ask why the usual form of incest — a father’s violation of his daughter — gets turned on its head in these tales. We see the archetypes of the collective unconscious\, the gods and goddesses\, having their way with us but don’t understand why we should suffer so. We learn what it means to violate the gods’ sacred principles. and\, if we take the lesson to heart\, are chastened by it. We explore the relevance of these ancient stories to modern life by looking at their reflections in the troubled lives of clients in psychotherapy and characters in film to recognize the many variations on the theme of incest. \nWith the myth of the great god Pan\, we will look into this god’s creation\, not only as a symbolic example of the expression of psyche’s unconscious drama and its inner processes\, but also as a means by which the ancients\, and now ourselves\, make sense of the world. We explore the classical beginnings of this beloved pastoral god as religious myth\, and then the ways secular motifs and energies of the myth live on in modern society. We look at Jung’s views of myth for the second half of life\, and we will explore ideas about our own personal myths as a means of interpreting the past\, looking at the present and finding guidance and inspiration for the future. \nDates and Times\n\nSundays from 1:00 – 3:00 pm\n\nSchedule\n\nFebruary 12 – Diana Oxley\nFebruary  26 – Diana Oxley\nMarch 5 – Diana Oxley\nMarch 26 – Carol Walnum\nApril 2 – Carol Walnum\nApril 9 – Carol Walnum\n\nCost\n\n12 hours of instruction: $205 (OFJ members: $195)\nSorry\, we are unable to offer refunds.\nContinuing Education Credits are available\, with one hour of CE credit for each hour of attendance. SUMMARY:Creative Initiation Journey
DESCRIPTION:Drawing from the three stages of a creative initiation journey – Gateway\, Attending\, Passage – we build a container\, attend to the unconscious\, and awaken the prospective psyche. The initiatory task of allowing for the “the third thing” or the “other” to present itself is a visual validation of the spontaneous psychic energy that gives meaning to lines\, shapes\, and colors. With our open-mind\, curiosity\, and determination\, we will welcome the visual and expressive images as “strangers” and respect and honor the journey that unfolds. \nUsing art materials\, writing\, dreams\, and/or active imagination\,  each person will attend to creative tasks to mark and document the imaginal path of individuation. Various prompts and tasks will be provided\, while individuals who are more comfortable with materials can follow their own process within the creative initiation process. \n*Artistic skill not necessary\, only the willingness to be on the Fool’s journey. \n**Supplies: please have a large journal\, container of water\, several different brushes\, watercolor paper\, acrylics or watercolors\, basic oil crayons\, tissue paper\, tape\, glue. Additional materials: maps\, postcards\, magazines\, scissors\, clay\, crayons\, pencils\, pens\, colored markers\, inks.

SUMMARY:Jungian Art Therapy: Living A Creative Life
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to live a creative life? Jung’s initiatory journey into the “spirit of the depths“ was creative but required profound psychic courage\, suffering\, and patience as he confronted the unconscious and discovered “the third thing.”  Upon his “return\,” when Jung wrote that “everything of which we are conscious is an image\, and that image is psyche\,” he elevated the imagination and creative processes. One of the gifts was his essay The Transcendent Function which conceptualized how unconscious and invisible psychic material became conscious and visible through play\, dedication\, endurance of wrestling with the opposites\, and the respect for the ineffable and irrational aspects of the psyche.  Jung thereby came to understand the importance of the “third thing.”  Jung’s investigations into the unconscious through various creative means opened the door and gave credence for the expressive arts therapies. In this lecture the three-part initiation model provides a container in which we consider Jung’s wisdom and how the “third thing” may offer hints on living a creative life.

SUMMARY:Body as Compass: Dreams and the Soul
DESCRIPTION:In these challenging\, polarizing times we are called to draw from creative\, healing energies from deeper parts of the Self. Expanding our awareness of the somatic foundations in all relationships – therapeutic\, educational\, family\, friendship\, partnership\, nature and more – can deepen empathy and effectiveness in being present\, while providing avenues for self-care and renewal. \nIn this winter time as the new light begins to dawn from the darkness\, we engage light in the body through working with a dream image as healing medicine. Together we will engage our dreams to connect with a deeper sense of knowing\, creativity\, and wholeness — in ourselves\, in all our relations\, and as world citizens attuning to an evolving planetary call. \nThis workshop will support you in nurturing body and soul through presentation\, expressive movement\, drawing\, and writing.*  No experience in dance is necessary\, only curiosity and openness to engage the unknown. \nIn preparation\, I invite you to let a healing image come to mind – something comforting\, warming\, or sacred that’s meaningful for you – from a dream\, nature\, an object on your altar\, or something from your daily life. Says Jung\, “My soul\, where are you? Do you hear me? I speak\, I call you – are you there? I have returned\, I am here again.”  No experience in dance is necessary\, only curiosity and openness to engage the unknown.

SUMMARY:Body as Compass: Dreams and the Soul
DESCRIPTION:Our bodies and dreams may be our closest links to the unconscious\, expressing the soul’s longing through image\, breath\, gesture\, the rhythm of our step\, and the music of our speech. Dreams carry treasures that enhance the meaning and depth of our life’s journey. Illuminating our inner landscape\, they help us come to know disowned parts of ourselves\, point to what we value\, and provide guidance on our life path. This talk will introduce DreamDancing ©\, an embodied approach that integrates C. G. Jung’s active imagination approach with creative\, embodied methods\, including a brief experience.

SUMMARY:The Synchronicity of the Two Red Books: Jung\, Tolkien\, and the Imaginal Realm
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: This event will be held live in-person at Unity of Portland (4525 SE Stark). The only way to attend the program live is to attend in person. A video recording of the event will be created and sent out after the event to all members and to all who purchase single tickets\, to accommodate those not able or not comfortable to attend in person. There will be no Zoom for this program. \nBeginning in the years leading up to the Great War\, both C.G. Jung and J.R.R. Tolkien independently began to undergo profound imaginal experiences. Jung recorded these fantasies in a large red manuscript that he named Liber Novus\, referred to simply as The Red Book. For Tolkien\, this imaginal journey revealed to him the world of Middle-earth\, whose stories and myths eventually led to the writing of The Lord of the Rings\, a book he named within its own imaginal history The Red Book of Westmarch. This lecture explores the many synchronistic parallels between Jung’s and Tolkien’s Red Books: the style and content of their works of art\, the narrative descriptions and scenes in their texts\, the nature of their visions and dreams\, and an underlying similarity in world view that emerged from their experiences. The two men seem to have been simultaneously treading parallel paths through the imaginal realm. Note: image is an illustration by J.R.R. Tolkien from his Book of Ishness.

SUMMARY:The Muses of Truth and Transformation: Timeless Tales for Troubled Times
DESCRIPTION:Deep transformation of our basic life scripts requires experiencing all types of truth in order to settle conflicts. This workshop considers other stories and more applications to reforging personal and cultural narratives about judging truth and resolving conflicts. The process is visible in successful depth therapy\, resolutions of life crises\, initiation experiences\, and reconciliation of difficult disputes. This workshop does not require the lecture\, as the same themes will appear in new stores that address common quandaries both personally and in society today.

SUMMARY:The Muses of Truth and Transformation: Timeless Tales for Troubled Times
DESCRIPTION:A timeless tale sums up our contemporary conflicts: two women claimed the same newborn baby\, so the sage declared\, “Cut the baby in two and give each woman half.” The first woman nodded\, while the other cried out\, “No! Spare the baby\, give him to her.”  Although most familiar from the Bible\, the story is a folktale found in different cultures and offering relevant archetypal insights.  Partisans today may act like the first woman\, insisting on their position even if it means killing innocent people – think jihadists and lone mass murderers. Politicians are willing to “kill” legislation that does not fit their ideology\, even if it splits the body politic. When faced with unyielding opponents\, earlier cultures reflected on deadly conflicts and put their insights into metaphorical stories – folktales – and passed them on. Only stories that rang true to people in many cultures survived\, leaving us time-tested archetypal wisdom for resolving conflicts. \nThis lecture recounts such folktales and shows how they help us identify distinct types of truth – factual\, mythic\, oath-taking\, pragmatic and home types of stories.

SUMMARY:Finding the Self in Relationship: Intrapsychic and Interpersonal Paths to Psychic Development
DESCRIPTION:The Self is one of Jung’s most important and original ideas.  It represents the divine within every individual\, and also serves as the primary driver of the individuation process.  It invites\, nudges\, and challenges us to become more.  The Self is a somewhat elusive concept\, and elusive as a psychological presence as well.  As a concept\, the Self is an idea\, a theory.  In a lived life\, it is an encounter\, an encounter with energies that may be large or small\, penetrating or soft\, beckoning us to the edge of the known and the unknown.   It is on that edge of the known and the unknown that psychic development occurs.  In short\, the Self appears in the relationship between ego and ‘other’. \nFor Jung\, that ‘other’ includes relationships in the world\, with people we love and struggle with in everyday life\, and with other kindred spirits\, as well as relationships with one’s inner life\, with the unconscious.  This seminar will explore ways in which the developmental energies of the Self arise in both forms of relationship.  We will consider the ego’s possible tasks and stance in these encounters\, that is\, how we might participate creatively with the  ‘other’ in becoming more of who we are. \nDates and Times\n\nSundays from 1:00 – 3:00 pm\n\nSchedule\n\nOctober 2\, 2022 – Dunbar Carpenter\nOctober 9 – Dunbar Carpenter\nOctober 16 – Dunbar Carpenter\nOctober 30 – Maribeth Kallemeyn\nNovember 6 – Maribeth Kallemeyn\nNovember 20 – Maribeth Kallemeyn\n\nCost\n\n12 hours of instruction: $205 (OFJ members: $195)\nSorry\, we are unable to offer refunds.\nContinuing Education Credits are available\, with one hour of CE credit for each hour of attendance. SUMMARY:Working with the Promethean Complex
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop we will dig deep into the myth of Prometheus to better understand how our increasing focus on progress and technology has led to our chaotic world. Using stories and images we will explore ways to work with and through our Promethean complex. The Promethean complex leads to rich creativity\, but also catastrophic destruction. As such\, it is imperative we consciously engage with this complex to learn how trickery\, thievery\, and hubris influence us. We also consider how technology affects our daily lives and the psychological debt we accrue due to our increasing involvement with technology. Finally\, we will explore the mythic motif of the superhero in its varied modern forms and how this motif influences our personal and collective lives.

SUMMARY:Our Promethean Debt
DESCRIPTION:“… our progressiveness\, though it may result in a great many delightful wish-fulfillments\, piles up an equally gigantic Promethean debt which has to be paid off from time to time in the form of hideous catastrophes.” – C.G. Jung\, (CW 9i\, par. 276) \nThe past few years full of ‘hideous catastrophes’ have brought on overwhelming feelings of fear\, anxiety\, and deep suffering. In times like these\, hope is a word that fades from our imagination. How do we find meaning in our fragmented world? Is hope even possible? The story of Prometheus provides a rich\, complex narrative that has captured the imagination of poets and artists for millennia. Its origins date back to a time of difficult struggles within ancient Greece. Using this Greek myth\, we will delve into the archetypal themes of trickery\, theft\, fire and hope to better understand psychologically our current world of catastrophes. Reflecting on the Promethean myth sheds light on how a semblance of order may arise from our current state of chaos.

SUMMARY:Reciprocity: What We’ve Always Known
DESCRIPTION:Building on Friday’s lecture concerning the dynamics of dominion and reciprocity\, our time together will be spent exploring both the theoretical and experiential ways the psychic dynamic of reciprocity demands our attention. Through prompts made to provoke\, engage\, and agitate\, we will solicit and share experiences of reciprocity through active imagination\, images\, and storytelling. This asks for active participation with these materials. In addition\, we will investigate how human-animal transformation in Indigenous myth illustrates how necessary this relationship is to establishing reciprocity with land\, animals\, and all spirit beings.
