Haiku usually concerns nature and an image created out of a few words. Haiku ( a form of Jung’s active imagination) is a spiritual art form that promotes healing. As the poet W. H. Auden said (quoting his father who was a physician)\, “Healing is the intuitive art of wooing nature.”

DESCRIPTION:After a brief explanation of C.G. Jung’s concept of archetypes\, the topics of magic\, magician\, transformation and wonder will be explored. Examples used will include dreams\, synchronistic events\, symbols from the Tarot and from the arts\, and passages from the works of Jung. Based on his research at the C.G. Jung Institute in Zürich\, Dr. Granrose will compare the concept of the magician with those of the shaman\, the trickster\, and the fool. He will also examine some of the ways in which Jungian analysis incorporates elements that were once part of traditional magic.

SUMMARY:Goddesses in Older Women: Archetypes and Juicy Crones
DESCRIPTION:Around age fifty\, women pass over a threshold into the third phase of their lives. Knowing which archetypes are stirring empowers women to be authentic and self-accepting in this crone phase. Based on the work in her new book\, Goddesses in Older Women\, Dr. Bolen will introduce us to archetypes of wisdom\, spirituality\, decisive action\, healing laughter and compassion that are inherent potentials in post- menopausal women. As crones\, 45 million American women over fifty whose lives were changed by the women’s movement may once again transform society by tapping into many archetypal energies\, such as Hestia\, as well as the archetype which is a circle of wisewomen or clan mothers. \nIn addition to potential energies for the older woman\, the crone archetypes are potential sources of wisdom and compassion in younger women and in men as well. In this workshop\, through stories and a guided meditation\, men and women will tap into the archetypal layer of the psyche to encounter personal symbols and inner figures.

SUMMARY:The Millionth Circle: Transforming Ourselves and the World
DESCRIPTION:The archetype of the sacred circle\, as well as feminism\, Jungian psychology\, and Rupert Sheldrake’s Morphic Field Theory come together in Dr. Bolen’s current book The Millionth Circle. Drawing on the story of “the hundredth monkey” which inspired anti-nuclear activists\, “the millionth circle” depends upon a simple hypothesis: when a critical number of people change how they think and behave\, the culture will also. In this talk\, she will describe her concept of a Zen of Circle Maintenance and the Jungian analytic vessel\, the connection between morphic fields and the collective unconscious\, and the connection between the Grail Legend\, the feminine principle\, and a shift in planetary consciousness.

SUMMARY:Ways of Being Inferior
DESCRIPTION:When Jung published in 1920 the first edition of Psychological Types\, he wrote in his Foreword: “This book is the fruit of twenty years’ work in the domain of practical psychology.” This dating places the inception of the work near the beginning of his long career\, and though later editions would include an Appendix of four short essays on the subject\, they do not add to the original work. He had had his say on this complex topic\, and was not influenced by a very large body of commentary on his theory. \nThe work has evoked a wide range of responses\, including several attempts to develop tests by which a person can be “typed” as Introverted/Thinking/Sensation/Judging or Extroverted/Feeling/ Intuitive/Perceptive – and so on. (“Judging” and “Perceptive” were additions by Myers and Briggs to the original scheme.) These tests have introduced Jungian thought to a much larger public than has been reached by his other works\, and devout Jungians have varied widely in their estimation of this part of his collective opus. \nThis lecture will focus upon negative aspects of each of the types\, as Jung himself tended to do\, asking the question: If one is\, say\, an Introverted Intuitive\, what is the price one must pay for this fate? Hence: Ways of Being Inferior.

SUMMARY:The Eleusinian Mysteries: Vision Into  the Abyss of the Seed
DESCRIPTION:This day is deemed anodos (uprising) when we bring light to what was gleaned from the dark of ritual descent. Those who received initiation together at Eleusis were called adelphi (sister) and adelphos(brother) because participation in the mysteries led to familiarity. The initiates were encouraged to seek each other to connect\, discuss\, and amplify their understanding of the sacred mysteries. In this spirit\, participants are invited to share images\, dreams\, or experiences which reveal the living quality of the mysteries. Please wear comfortable clothes\, bring an initiatory dream\, an altar object\, and pen and paper. We will share a harvest meal at midday and close with a sacramental blessing.

SUMMARY:The Eleusinian Mysteries: Vision Into  the Abyss of the Seed
DESCRIPTION:For 2\,000 years the Eleusinian mysteries\, core of spiritual meaning in ancient Greece\, were celebrated at the end of harvest. They were enacted for men and women who chose to undergo initiatory processes leading to personal transformation through contact with a divine source of life. Today\, the archetype of initiation is often enacted through our pursuit of Jung’s “unconscious core of meaning” in depth psychology. This evening will be a kathodos (downgoing) experience into this rite. Through a slide presentation intertwining archaeological and psychological images\, we will encounter facets of known material on the mysteries. As symbolic initiates\, we will follow in the footsteps of the grieving Demeter\, from the initial purification and sacrifice\, through the processional walk from Athens to Eleusis\, to the final ecstatic vision at the temple.

DESCRIPTION:In May of 1995\, Oregon Friends of C. G. Jung\, in collaboration with the R.H. Ives Gammell Studios Trust and Maryhill Museum\, presented a special side lecture in Portland\, The Poem and the Painter: A Psychological Journey. The following day\, participants traveled to Maryhill Museum for a tour/lecture of the exhibit The Hound of Heaven: The Vision of R.H. Gammell. Central to the tour was a discussion of the influence of C.G. Jung upon Gammell’s work. \nPresently\, a larger exhibit\, Transcending Vision: R.H. Ives Gammell\, continues at Maryhill until November 15\, 2001. \nA special lecture: R.H. Ives Gammell and Carl Jung\, is given at 2pm\, October 6\, 2001. The presenters are Elizabeth Ives Hunter\, god-daughter of R.H. Ives Gammell\, and Brigid Boardman\, Ph.D.\, English scholar and author of two books about Francis Thompson\, who wrote The Hound of Heaven.

The film crew traveled over 25\,000 miles\, to Canada\, England\, France\, Switzerland and the United States\, for these spontaneous reactions. \nThe basic structure of the series is a more formal telling of personal dreams by a smaller group of men and women followed with interpretations of these dreams by Dr. von Franz. Certain motifs and archetypes are illustrated in these dreams and include : The male shadow; the negative and positive anima; patterns in dreams; the female shadow; negative and positive animus; dreams of our culture; dreams of relationships; dreams of The Self. Some of segment titles are: The Devouring Mother\, The Inner Bride\, The Hanged Man\, and Hell Has No Mirrors. \nOur The Way of the Dream weekend will include discussions led by local Jungian analysts. Though the film is segmented\, it is continuous thematically and the two-day attendance is encouraged. This is the first showing of Boa’s film in Oregon in over ten years\, a rare opportunity for our community.

SUMMARY:Body and Soul: A Spiral Dance
DESCRIPTION:Body and soul are inseparable and mirror each other. Our bodies contain instinctual wisdom that we have been trained to ignore. In this workshop we will encourage a dialogue between the conscious and the unconscious (body) through a gentle non-structured movement meditation. To become whole we must go beyond learned patterns. If we listen deeply to our natural rhythms\, movements\, sounds and images\, we can become more fully embodied and heal the rift between psyche and soma\, body and soul. Verbal sharing will aid us in beginning to integrate our experience. Prior movement experience is not necessary. Wear comfortable clothes to allow ease of movement for this event. This workshop is limited to 24 participants.

SUMMARY:Archetypal Manifestations in the Individuation Process
DESCRIPTION:“The body is merely the visibility of the soul\, the psyche; and the soul is the psychological experience of the body. So it is really one and the same thing.” (Jung\, Zarathustra Seminars\, p. 355.) \nIndividuation is a second half of life process when we consciously return to our personal unconscious and our archetypal roots. We know much about working with personal unconscious material. Jung\, however\, pushes deeper in his work and invites us to research and work with archetypal forces that manifest in our personal process. These experiences are often pathologized\, although they have been experienced\, observed and discussed since the beginning of human consciousness. This lecture will discuss the importance of recognizing\, witnessing and containing these archetypal energies when they become embodied and emerge in our lives and in our analysis. Case material and video clips will help to illustrate the subject matter.

SUMMARY:Origins of Analytical Psychology in the United States
DESCRIPTION:Jung’s analytical psychology has developed in many places in the United States and in the world. Much of the spread has been during the past quarter century. As we enter into the twenty-first century\, there has been a tendency not to remember how analytical psychology developed in this country. It is the purpose of this talk to briefly review the founding of analytical psychology in three areas: New York\, San Francisco and Los Angeles. These were the three areas in the United States where Jung’s psychology developed during the lifetime of Jung\, and as a result\, he influenced how these professional groups developed. In these localities the founders had had their analyses with Jung\, which had an important bearing on how each professional society developed. This talk will be illustrated with photos of the founders of the different Jungian societies. Implications for the state of analytical psychology today will be presented.

We will recover the importance of Silence for the life of images\, prayer\, healthy soul life\, inner contemplation and for the speaking of the heart. SUMMARY:Archetypal Silence: The Mother of Soul
DESCRIPTION:In Gnostic myth\, Sige\, Silence\, is the mother of Sophia\, the Soul of the World. Silence is the medium\, the matrix of soul life. We know when we are in soul when we experience an inner silence\, even though we may be speaking with others or there are sounds around us. Silence is an autonomous phenomenon\, more like a region we can learn to step into than simply the absence of noise. This weekend explores Silence as basic to soul experience. \nThe evening lecture explores the barriers to the region of silence through the imagery of the Isenheim Altar and some of the writing of St. Anthony the Great. We will see that we have to find the gateway to Silence. Guardians have to be met and faced. How these guardians function in the present world is presented\, along with suggestions concerning how to recognize them and how to honor their autonomy.
