SUMMARY:Encountering Our Animal Guides
DESCRIPTION:The animal image is a frequent one in dreams\, in which a particular animal takes on a symbolic meaning that is not immediately apparent from the way the same animal behaves in life. This lecture presents animals that have played important roles in world art\, explore the symbolic status that each of these animal types has assumed in the creative unconscious\, and compare the image of the animal to the ways in which the actual animal is encountered in the natural world.

SUMMARY:Active Imagination: A Quest for Transformation
DESCRIPTION:Images of the feminine that are transformative\, powerful and passionate are emerging even as we find ourselves caught by old patterns and judgements. We search within ourselves and in the world for support of new ways of being. Christiana Morgan’s original work illustrates a unique and passionately feminine path of individuation. Dr. Douglas will show slides depicting Morgan’s quest to reclaim her feminine voice and power. Seminar participants will be invited to experientially follow the permutations of the tranformative feminine within their own lives through dreams\, artwork\, thoughts\, feelings\, and active imagination.

SUMMARY:Active Imagination and the Visions Seminar
DESCRIPTION:C.G.Jung described active imagination as “the creative secret of the mind” where –through visioning\, dance and /or art work–consciousness and the unconscious work together in a profoundly healing way. The VISIONS SEMINAR is Jung’s great exploration of active imagination as a potent methodology for expanding the psyche and reuniting the patient with archetypal\, healing images that lie beneath personal complexes. The active imagination in the VISIONS SEMINAR also expresses one woman’s quest for healing engendered by transformative\, passionate feminine images –images flowering in many people’s psyches’ today. \nJung’s 1930’s seminars were based on active imaginations painted and recorded by Christiana Morgan\, a gifted young woman from New England who had been in analysis with him. In the course of her research\, Dr. Douglas discovered Morgan’s complete series of visions which link the chthonic\, dynamic\, and erotic feminine with the Divine. \nThrough slides and lecture\, Dr. Douglas will explore the historical background of active imagination. She will examine the VISIONS SEMINARS relevance in the creation of Jungian theory\, especially of active\nimagination\, anima and animus\, typology\, and the psychology of women.

SUMMARY:The Healing Power of Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Poetry helps one breath better. It is to the soul and heart what vitamins are to the body. The images which poetry evokes\, as well as the moods and memories\, feed a hunger that soul has for beauty\, mystery and a sense of the sacred. \nThrough readings and exercises\, participants are invited to appreciate the powerful healing gifts of poetry. In addition\, they are invited to attune their ears to the melodies and rhythms of poetry when it is read aloud\, so that they can experience something of the joy that comes from exercising the muscles of the soul when the voice sings its song. Finally\, participants will be encouraged to try their hand at writing a poem. In preparation for the workshop\, participants are asked to bring a poem that has chosen them\, or has been with them in their lives.

SUMMARY:The Tears of God: Grief as an Opening to the Divine
DESCRIPTION:The alchemy of the grieving process dissolves the conscious mind and its intentions\, and in a descent into the soul’s seasons of grief one meets the Oprhan\, an encounter which can transform personal loss into a journey of homecoming. Grief can be home-work\, and the Orphan\, the most homeless of all\, can lead us into that place where the wounds to love are the cracks through which a sense of the Divine shines through. The wonder\, even miracle\, of this moment is the recognition that our human tears of grief are mirrored in the tears of the Divine who hungers for an encounter with us. We grieve because we have dared to love\, and we can love again in an expanded way and allow ourselves to be loved because we have taken the time to grieve.

SUMMARY:Aliveness / Deadness / Regeneration
DESCRIPTION:To feel alive and not dead is as basic as our need for food\, air\, and water. Fear of this lies at the root of illness. In this workshop we will explore the unconscious ways we make parts of ourselves dead and what spaces offer themselves for regeneration.

SUMMARY:Aliveness / Deadness
DESCRIPTION:“As long as the animals are there\, there is life in the symbol.”\n–C.G. Jung \nIn the opening years of our new century and under the shadow of terrorist attacks on American soil\, these following questions have become urgent: What makes for our sense of aliveness and feeling real? What puts us in touch with our own voice? What confers a sense of finding and creating a path that is true for us? What kills it\, making us feel deadness? The focus of this lecture will examine the space of aliveness\, which is created between analysand and analyst\, between the ego and animus/a\, in worship between ritual and repetition compulsion\, and in imagination between the factual and the symbolic.

SUMMARY:The Symbol in the Transference: Jungian Approaches in Psychotherapy and Counseling
DESCRIPTION:“They tore the bark off the tree\nbut the roots will help it\ngrow.” (7yr old boy) \nThis workshop for professionals\, students and interested lay people\, seeks to return analytical psychology to its fertile roots–the symbol and symbolic expression. The day will focus on a variety of ways to activate and amplify symbols in the healing process. Hermes is invoked along with Eros and the Alchemy of Play so that Psyche leads Ego to new understandings and a new life. Priority is given to the therapeutic alliance and the symbol as it emerges out of the transference. Jungian theory (Primary Self\, de-integratio\, re-intergration\, participation mystique (the interactive field)\, projection and introjection) will be linked to clinical practice. Slides\, images\, dreams\, stories and active imagination will be shown and demonstrated. Transformation is witnessed as nigredo evolves to albedo and then rubedo and as chaos gives way to struggle and containment before the emergence of themes of reparation and resolution.

SUMMARY:Symbols in Your Psyche: The Inner Journey
DESCRIPTION:The uniqueness of analytical psychology lies in its emphasis on developing the capacity for symbolization. Jung’s life and work centered around the symbol-he imagined\, dreamed\, wrote\, carved\, painted\, played with and sculpted the symbol. This lecture-slide presentation seeks to provide a meditative-experiential evening around such key Jungian concepts as the Meadow\, Persona\, Shadow\, Anima-Animus and Self.

SUMMARY:The Self in Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Everyone has an ego that wishes\, and wills\, and fears. But Jung tells us that we also have a Self that has the ability to cancel our wishes\, frustrate our wills\, and intensify our fears\, all in the service of a mysterious project: individuation. How do we recognize the Self? Jung found evidence of the Self in dreams. But how does the Self speak to us in dreams? Using examples from a variety of sources\, Dr. Beebe will demonstrate how we can identify the Self and how the Self emerges in dreams as a dynamic presence\, organizing a new psychological standpoint.

SUMMARY:The Purposes of Nightmares
DESCRIPTION:Frightening or upsetting dreams come to all of us sooner or later. It is sometimes hard to understand what they intend. Using clips of dream sequences from classic films that show both the horror and the humor of nightmares\, Dr. Beebe will help us to see the positive\, adaptive meanings of negative or disruptive dream experiences.

SUMMARY:On This Journey We Call Our Life
DESCRIPTION:In his memoir Jung writes\, “The meaning of my existence is that life has addressed a question to me…or conversely\, I myself am a question.” The depth of meaning which we find along the way is in large measure a matter of which questions we are living\, consciously or unconsciously. In this presentation we will consider the character of those questions which\, more consciously engaged\, add to the richness of the journey and enlarge the individual. Among the questions addressed this weekend\, the one we focus on this evening is\, “By what spiritual points of reference do I live my life?”

SUMMARY:Continuing the Search: Finding the Meaning Through Image\, Story\, and Music
DESCRIPTION:In this participatory workshop\, we will continue to explore the archetype of the dark feminine through image\, music\, and literature. This is an image of the feminine that is other than “the mother.” What can we understand about her characteristics through examining our own individual responses to literature\, music\, and image? And what might she mean to men as well as to women? Participants will enjoy the introverted time to explore the personal meaning of each image and each piece of music. Then discussion will allow the group to come to some assessment of the characteristics of the transformational dark feminine archetype\, and an understanding of why in our time she is so important to each of us\, and to all of us collectively.

SUMMARY:Redeeming the Dark Feminine: Sophia to the Black Madonna
DESCRIPTION:Drawing on literature from the Song of Songs and The Gospel of Mary to contemporary works\, on images from Isis to the present\, and on music from Hildegard of Bingen to contemporary composers such as Francis Poulenc and Arvo Pärt\, we will explore the figure of this long-repressed but powerful archetype of transformation. For this lecture and workshop\, the dark\, hidden\, but positive feminine will be accessed through the figure of Mary Magdalene\, long associated with the Black Madonna. We will trace her origins through her predecessors\, and her characteristics through examining image\, music\, and literature.

SUMMARY:The Earth Has a Soul: The Nature Writings of C.G. Jung
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, participants will hear about the specific environmental consultations Jung gave: how the natural self is left behind when technology develops too rapidly; how our primateness needs to be considered in city planning and education; how cultivating a plot of ground and enjoying dreams help ancient instincts come back to life; and where banished nature spirits now abide. Using active imagination\, art materials\, spontaneous writing\, and handouts of selected passages\, we will explore how Jung’s ideas impact us and might guide us toward aligning our lives with Nature’s sacred laws. \nOur task is not to return to Nature a la Rousseau but to find the natural man again. C. G. Jung

SUMMARY:The Earth Has a Soul: The Nature Writings of C.G. Jung
DESCRIPTION:This presentation features a lesser-known side of Jung – practical\, down-to-earth\, and deeply concerned over the loss of connection with Nature. Jung emphasizes that Nature includes spirit as well as matter. Efforts to “conquer Nature” have left matter without its nature spirits and humans without a natural spiritual life. A pioneer in exploring the psyche’s evolution\, Jung discovered its primordial foundation\, which he named “natural man.” \nInterwoven with dreams and stories from Jung’s travels and his life at Bollingen\, this program showcases his challenging observations and prophetic predictions about technology and modern life. Following the tradition of the Taoist rainmaker whom he admired\, Jung speaks as a culture shaman who shares our malaise and knows that restoring our own living connection with Nature contributes to healing the whole.

SUMMARY:Wrestling With Big Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Borrowing a notion from the Elgonyi natives of central Africa\, Jung designated “big” dreams as those transcending individual concerns. Such dreams comment on the human condition\, history and the evolution of consciousness\, or social problems of great magnitude. Now\, big dreams in response to September 11 offer seminal insights on our current plight. This workshop will be an exploration of big dreams and how to work with them so as to extract their wisdom and integrate their value into our individual\, everyday lives. Participants are encouraged to bring dreams of this kind to the workshop.

DESCRIPTION:The events of September 11 and the war on terrorism have focused our attention on America’s future in a renewed and pressing way. Given our extroverted orientation\, much of our focus is on the “other\,” on the enemy outside of us. However\, our domestic and internal spiritual condition is also in need of serious attention\, and is inextricably linked with our foreign policy. The same psychological attitudes influence both domestic and international (inner and outer) spheres. As Jung concluded in 1930\, the central\, archetypal force shaping American attitudes is a powerful “Heroic Ideal” or aspiration toward greatness. Today\, this heroic ideal is in a state of upheaval. We are suffering\, albeit unconsciously\, from a heroic-identity crisis: What does it mean to be a heroic or great people? It is imperative to our future as a nation and civilization that we begin to examine this and to understand ourselves. This talk will focus on the archetypal underpinnings of our national character and their relevance to the events of our day and the future of America.

SUMMARY:Haiku\, Zen and Jung’s Psychology
DESCRIPTION:Haiku is a treasure Japan has given the world. These short poems offer us extraordinary moments of insight about ordinary things. Haiku\, linked to Zen\, embodies egolessness\, aloneness\, acceptance\, universality\, humor\, silence\, awakening\, love and death. Haiku usually concerns nature and an image created out of a few words. Haiku ( a form of Jung’s active imagination) is a spiritual art form that promotes healing. As the poet W. H. Auden said (quoting his father who was a physician)\, “Healing is the intuitive art of wooing nature.”

SUMMARY:Carl Jung: Wounded Healer of the Soul
DESCRIPTION:“The main interest of my work is not concerned with the treatment of neurosis but rather with the approach to the numinous…(which) is the real therapy.” C.G. Jung in a letter to P.W. Martin. \nIn this lecture\, Claire Dunne will present a human spiritual portrait of Jung and the core of his work\, with some emphasis on the late years of his deepest flowering\, and amplified by symbolic images from her book\, Carl Jung: Wounded Healer of the Soul. Jung’s work\, powered by a vision that is essentially evolutionary in spirit\, points to a breadth and depth of life that is prophetic for our time and is inextricably linked with the unfolding nature of man himself.

SUMMARY:Magic\, Archetypes\, and the Renewal of Wonder: Finding Magic in Life
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will offer experiential techniques for recovering the sense of “magic” in life that small children naturally enjoy but which most adults have lost. These techniques include active imagination\, meditation\, ritual\, the use of music and drumming\, and the learning of some simple magic tricks which illustrate ways of finding surprise and wonder in small things.

SUMMARY:Magic and Archetypes
DESCRIPTION:After a brief explanation of C.G. Jung’s concept of archetypes\, the topics of magic\, magician\, transformation and wonder will be explored. Examples used will include dreams\, synchronistic events\, symbols from the Tarot and from the arts\, and passages from the works of Jung. Based on his research at the C.G. Jung Institute in Zürich\, Dr. Granrose will compare the concept of the magician with those of the shaman\, the trickster\, and the fool. He will also examine some of the ways in which Jungian analysis incorporates elements that were once part of traditional magic.

SUMMARY:Goddesses in Older Women: Archetypes and Juicy Crones
DESCRIPTION:Around age fifty\, women pass over a threshold into the third phase of their lives. Knowing which archetypes are stirring empowers women to be authentic and self-accepting in this crone phase. Based on the work in her new book\, Goddesses in Older Women\, Dr. Bolen will introduce us to archetypes of wisdom\, spirituality\, decisive action\, healing laughter and compassion that are inherent potentials in post- menopausal women. As crones\, 45 million American women over fifty whose lives were changed by the women’s movement may once again transform society by tapping into many archetypal energies\, such as Hestia\, as well as the archetype which is a circle of wisewomen or clan mothers. \nIn addition to potential energies for the older woman\, the crone archetypes are potential sources of wisdom and compassion in younger women and in men as well. In this workshop\, through stories and a guided meditation\, men and women will tap into the archetypal layer of the psyche to encounter personal symbols and inner figures.

SUMMARY:The Millionth Circle: Transforming Ourselves and the World
DESCRIPTION:The archetype of the sacred circle\, as well as feminism\, Jungian psychology\, and Rupert Sheldrake’s Morphic Field Theory come together in Dr. Bolen’s current book The Millionth Circle. Drawing on the story of “the hundredth monkey” which inspired anti-nuclear activists\, “the millionth circle” depends upon a simple hypothesis: when a critical number of people change how they think and behave\, the culture will also. In this talk\, she will describe her concept of a Zen of Circle Maintenance and the Jungian analytic vessel\, the connection between morphic fields and the collective unconscious\, and the connection between the Grail Legend\, the feminine principle\, and a shift in planetary consciousness.

SUMMARY:Ways of Being Inferior
DESCRIPTION:After a quick review of the essentials of Jung’s typology\, we will look at his emphasis upon the opposites and his insistence upon the inevitability of our strongest function being directly opposed to our weakest function. This workshop will be a getting down to “cases\,” both Dr. Jarrett’s and those of participants\, confessing to those more interesting but somewhat regrettable traits in ourselves and others\, in order to see whether these traits can be accommodated within the Jungian personality theory.
