SUMMARY:The Appeal of the Extraordinary
DESCRIPTION:Jung’s approach to psychology provides techniques to keep individuals in touch with their inner lives\, as well as methods for interpreting the non-rational\, archetypal elements of the unconscious. The workshop explores these techniques and insights that we need now in order to detect and respect the non-rational elements within life that inspire\, intimidate\, confuse\, and ultimately compel us to confront and better understand the intimations of the archaic basis of the mind. We delve into otherworldly beliefs as a way to better understand the origins of archetypal thought patterns\, and consider how these beliefs continue to inspire us through our dreams and extraordinary experiences.

SUMMARY:The Appeal of the Extraordinary
DESCRIPTION:There is a universal human desire to be drawn to extraordinary beliefs and strange phenomena that defy rational means to explain them. C.G. Jung might consider the appeal of the extraordinary as evidence of the influence of archaic or archetypal thought and behavioral patterns inherent in the human psyche which make up humanity’s collective unconscious. The archetypal dimension expresses profoundly significant symbolic and metaphorical concepts that cannot be proven by rational methods such as the concept of God. However\, in many cases\, the desire to embrace extraordinary views and phenomena can have dire consequences\, especially if a person insists upon an extraordinary explanation rather than a rational one to explain certain factual events\, and interprets purely secular causes as imbued with an underlying divine significance. This lecture introduces examples of how the appeal of the extraordinary can enrich our lives and also distort reality.

Psyche responds to uncertainty with creative gestures.

DESCRIPTION:Two processes go on in us simultaneously from birth till death. The first is a personal process Jung calls individuation where we reach to become all of who we are\, including mistakes\, struggles\, talents\, uniqueness and an example of shared  human patterns Jung calls archetypes. The second process is the psyche’s goal to move us toward finding not our wholeness but our place in the wholeness of reality. When these two processes meet\, symbols get born and grow powerful. We will explore such symbols — their dangers and their gifts.

SUMMARY:The Kore Archetype in Myth and Psyche
DESCRIPTION:The Kore\, Greek for Virgin\, is a mysterious figure. Youthful and elusive\, the Kore personifies an archetypal state wherein a person becomes one-in-herself. \nIn C.G. Jung’s essay “The Psychological Aspects of the Kore” (1951)\, he makes the astonishing statement that the Kore is a Self-figure for women\, and has a power that is equivalent to that of the Mother. These two rarely discussed ideas have significance for women’s psychology\, and have direct bearing upon the development of feminine consciousness in both women and men. Who is this figure that is accorded such psychological power and significance? \nDrawing from her book The Kore Goddess: A Mythology and Psychology (2021)\, in this lecture Dr. Safron Rossi will draw out the pattern of the Kore through archaic Greek statues and the myths of Persephone\, Artemis and Hestia in order to discern how and where the Kore appears in life and plays a critical role in individuation.

DESCRIPTION:Describing the backlash to the industrialized way of life in the nineteen sixties and seventies\, Theodore Roszak coined the term “counter-culture.” He argued the essential focus of this movement was the growth of a world-altering technocracy. \nThis workshop will explore the idea that a new counter-culture\, more robust and enduring than its predecessor\, may be arising in response to an even more encompassing post-industrial technocracy. In seminar format\, utilizing writing exercises and group discussion\, we will evaluate compensatory ideas and perspectives generated by our current immersion in the technosphere and consider individual calling and purpose in light of these themes.

SUMMARY:When Psyche Sings: Jungian Music Psychotherapy
DESCRIPTION:The experiential workshop continues to deepen the process of hearing what cannot yet be seen\, and invites us to listen\, locate and experience those acoustic images\, both imaginal and material\, that play a role in our affective and archetypal engagement with our world. We will explore the contribution that musical processes offer to the wholeness and teleology of the individuation process intra-personally\, relationally\, and collectively. \nJoel Kroeker writes: \nDear workshop participants\,  \nWelcome to this exploration of the relationship between Music and Psyche. This kinship connection has been a long-held fascination of mine. For me (and perhaps for you too)\, music is everywhere in my life\, both waking and sleeping. I listen to it\, play it\, imagine it\, create it and even occasionally dream about it. In fact\, I realized at a young age that the experience of being “in music” feels a lot like being “in a dream.” This initial musical dreamlike quality informed the next four decades of my life as I moved through my academic career (in composition and ethnomusicology)\, my music career (as composer\, improvisational Jazz artist and singer-songwriter) and now as a music-centred psychotherapist and psychoanalyst.  \nEventually I had the rare opportunity to spend time with Jung’s grandson\, Dieter Baumann\, exploring together his musical experiences with his grandfather as well as Jung’s ideas about listening to the natural world (and even the voice of one’s patient) as music itself. These precious interactions felt\, at times\, as if I was sitting with old Jung himself\, as we discussed these first hand musical moments\, which amplified what I’d already explored deeply in Jung’s Collected Works.  \nThis relationship between musicking and dreaming has also informed how I hear and experience the world. For me\, music is a territory or location for psycho-spiritual development\, which transcends language\, offering us a chance to hear what cannot yet be seen within ourselves. Music is a waking dream with a soundtrack and I’ve found it to be a rich realm for deeply contemplative practice.  \nAfter working psychotherapeutically with hundreds of patients\, families and groups\, sharing music with audiences around the world and my own eventual formulation of Archetypal Music Psychotherapy\, my passion for this enigmatic alchemical relationship between Music and Psyche still burns as bright as ever\, and I’m thrilled that you’re considering to join us in this exploration. \n

SUMMARY:When Psyche Sings: Jungian Music Psychotherapy
DESCRIPTION:Music is everywhere in our lives\, both waking and sleeping\, inside and out. But much of our musical ecosystem remains unheard in a state of non-representation. We explore the place of the acoustic imaginal within our psychic ecology and our current fractured world of splitting and polariza­tion. The perception of sound triggers psychic contents\, and music mediates between our internal and external experience of consciousness through its affective impact on our symbolic imagination. We will deeply listen together to the soundscape metabolization process of our auditory digestive system toward the fundamental psychoanalytic goal of hearing what cannot yet be seen. By distilling music into its basic archetypal elements\, an approach is illustrated for working with musical symbols within analysis\, referred to as Archetypal Music Psychotherapy.

In 1911\, Jung wrote a letter to Freud in which he said that his nights were occupied with the study of astrology\, to which Freud responded that Jung would be “accused of mysticism.” Jung kept his practice of astrology relatively concealed\, but based upon evidence in his own writings\, as well as statements he made late in his life\, Jung was drawing on astrological wisdom regularly for both personal use and with his patients. \nDrawing on the research of Liz Greene\, Keiron Le Grice\, and Safron Rossi\, this presentation will demonstrate the role astrology played in Jung’s analytic practice\, as well as the significant ways in which he drew on astrological symbolism in the transformative process of creating The Red Book. By understanding how astrology influenced the development of Jungian psychology—and how depth psychology has subsequently shaped modern astrology—we can see how the astrological discipline can complement\, enhance\, and deepen the psychotherapy practiced today.

DESCRIPTION:This workshop will explore how Jungian analysis is uniquely suited to working with the exile complex. To deepen the understanding of the exile complex\, participants will be prompted to recall a personal experience with the feelings of exile (e.g.\, where one felt like an outsider\, unmirrored\, out of place)\, briefly journal and follow its thread\, and invite the “Third” to produce a new sense or image of mythic centering (as discussed in the Lady Liberty example on Friday night). DESCRIPTION:Following early relational trauma\, a dissociative system is set up in the psyche\, composed of part-self personifications including an innocent/wounded child and his or her archetypal protectors. The main purpose of this Self Care System is to keep the innocent/injured child-self separated from the suffering of affective experience that might annihilate (or transform) it. Dreams during the psychotherapy process give us a picture of this core complex and its defensive “efforts” on behalf of the “child.” Working with these archaic energies in the transference can be a stormy affair. The Friday Talk will address and illustrate these archaic energies in the core complex that frequently stretch our understanding of the analytic situation in the direction of enactments and counter-enactments.

SUMMARY:Jung\, Hermes\, the Tao and Complexity Theory
DESCRIPTION:The Greek myth of Hermes stealing Apollo’s cattle explicates the dilemmas we humans face in relating to each other and to the environment. The secret is in the symbol of his wand: a figure 8 with a gap at the top. Hermes is about the transactions in the gap between opposites (the two upper arms on the 8). As such\, Hermes is the god of ecopsychology because he is the god of businessmen\, psychologists\, diplomats\, the advertising that sustains our consumer culture\, and the human-environment relationship. Hermes’ association with the originating source\, what happens between non-existence and existence—is symbolically associated with the Tao and with  complexity theory—the mathematics of what happens between stability and chaos when change occurs.

DESCRIPTION:At the 2022 climate change meetings in Egypt\, the UN Secretary General said\, “We are in the fight of our lives\, and we are losing.” Psychology has been embarrassingly slow to respond to the frightening deterioration of our planetary environment\, but ecopsychology emerged in the 1990’s to address the issue. A case will be made that a Jungian version of ecopsychology offers the best framework for understanding the problems at the deepest levels and gives us a vision for the future. Hermes is the main god that will lead us into a better future or a continuation on a path to oblivion.

SUMMARY:Reclaiming the Wisdom of Ancient Myths
DESCRIPTION:C.G. Jung’s revelation of the mythopoetic dimension of the human psyche\, i.e.\, its story-making structure\, gave credence to his hypothesis of the collective unconscious\, its archetypal images and their healing intent. In this seminar\, we explore the wisdom hidden in the ancient Greek myths of Myrrha and the great god Pan. Together\, we will discover the meanings and guidance these age-old stories can offer us today. \nIn the myth of Myrrha\, we examine the theme of incest as perpetrated by a daughter with her father. We find that a repugnant act such as this appears in biblical stories\, as well\, and ask why the usual form of incest — a father’s violation of his daughter — gets turned on its head in these tales. We see the archetypes of the collective unconscious\, the gods and goddesses\, having their way with us but don’t understand why we should suffer so. We learn what it means to violate the gods’ sacred principles. and\, if we take the lesson to heart\, are chastened by it. We explore the relevance of these ancient stories to modern life by looking at their reflections in the troubled lives of clients in psychotherapy and characters in film to recognize the many variations on the theme of incest. \nWith the myth of the great god Pan\, we will look into this god’s creation\, not only as a symbolic example of the expression of psyche’s unconscious drama and its inner processes\, but also as a means by which the ancients\, and now ourselves\, make sense of the world. We explore the classical beginnings of this beloved pastoral god as religious myth\, and then the ways secular motifs and energies of the myth live on in modern society. DESCRIPTION:Drawing from the three stages of a creative initiation journey – Gateway\, Attending\, Passage – we build a container\, attend to the unconscious\, and awaken the prospective psyche. The initiatory task of allowing for the “the third thing” or the “other” to present itself is a visual validation of the spontaneous psychic energy that gives meaning to lines\, shapes\, and colors. With our open-mind\, curiosity\, and determination\, we will welcome the visual and expressive images as “strangers” and respect and honor the journey that unfolds. \nUsing art materials\, writing\, dreams\, and/or active imagination\,  each person will attend to creative tasks to mark and document the imaginal path of individuation. SUMMARY:Jungian Art Therapy: Living A Creative Life
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to live a creative life? Jung’s initiatory journey into the “spirit of the depths“ was creative but required profound psychic courage\, suffering\, and patience as he confronted the unconscious and discovered “the third thing.”  Upon his “return\,” when Jung wrote that “everything of which we are conscious is an image\, and that image is psyche\,” he elevated the imagination and creative processes. One of the gifts was his essay The Transcendent Function which conceptualized how unconscious and invisible psychic material became conscious and visible through play\, dedication\, endurance of wrestling with the opposites\, and the respect for the ineffable and irrational aspects of the psyche.  Jung thereby came to understand the importance of the “third thing.”  Jung’s investigations into the unconscious through various creative means opened the door and gave credence for the expressive arts therapies. In this lecture the three-part initiation model provides a container in which we consider Jung’s wisdom and how the “third thing” may offer hints on living a creative life.
