SUMMARY:The Unveiling of What Is Hidden
DESCRIPTION:In the ninth volume of his Collected Works\, Archtypes and the Collective Unconscious\, Jung selected Khidr from the 18th sutra of the Koran as an Image of the Guide in the psychological process of rebirth and transformation. His Eranos colleague\, Henri Corbin\, philosopher and Iranologist\, respected Khidr as a Threshold Figure\, an Awakener into the Imaginal World. By way of amplification\, Corbin brought to the Western world the work of the 13th century Islamic mystic\, Ibn Arabi\, who was first initiated by his experience with Khidr. In his wealth of writings\, Ibn Arabi highlighted the existence of an organ of perception that perceives a very precise order of reality\, the mundus imaginalis. In the Friday evening lecture\, we will explore the writings of Ibn Arabi\, the organ of perception and the realm of Khidr.

SUMMARY:Frida Kahlo and an Exploration of Character Structures
DESCRIPTION:In the Saturday workshop\, we will look at how Frida Kahlo’s basic relational pattern may be seen as a portrait of one of three identifiable relational patterns that inform our character structures. Dr. West will describe each of these structures and their underlying archetypal landscapes through various fairytales\, myths and other artists’ works\, again\, accompanied by numerous images. Following the essential Jungian premise that we transform through deeply meeting ourselves\, we will employ these perspectives on character to reflect upon ourselves individually\, as well as upon the state of our world at this time.

SUMMARY:Frida Kahlo and an Exploration of Character Structures
DESCRIPTION:The intense and compelling paintings of Frida Kahlo provide us with a rich context to begin an exploration of archetypal and developmental aspects of character structures. \nAccompanied by numerous images of both Frida and her paintings\, on Friday night Dr. West will address how Frida’s life and work may be seen as a remarkably courageous attempt to wrestle with the chaos of borderline experience. By embracing her own individuality\, however cruel was her experience of it\, Frida endure extraordinarily challenging encounters with the gods. Dr. West will suggest that she emerged for these encounters with a strengthened ego\, along with access to more developed defenses.

SUMMARY:The Feminine Principle in the Kabbalah: Shades of Darkness and Light
DESCRIPTION:Although focusing on the feminine aspects\, Dr. Nash will keep faith with the Kabbalists by showing their masculine counterparts\, for the feminine and masculine aspects should not be split apart; splitting being the original sin in Kabbalah. The healing power of bringing about a loving union between the sexes and facing the evil that exists in Creation and in our own shadows (carefully so as not to be caught up in them)\, redeems the darkness in Creation\, which emerges as an ongoing dialogue with God in which humanity plays its important part. Through a focus on the forces of unsentimental spiritual/sexual love and its inherent dangers\, the seminar will draw parallels to Jung’s concepts of individuation\, ego-Self dialogue\, animus and anima\, spirit/matter unity and ultimately the coniunctio. The Friday night lecture will illustrate the Sephirot Tree\, sometimes called the Tree of Life\, and the myths surrounding it\, while the Saturday seminar will be a continuation of these stories interspersed with our own daily-nightly lives\, including accounts of dreams and whatever manifestations of the unconscious the participants deem appropriate.

SUMMARY:The Feminine Principle in the Kabbalah: Shades of Darkness and Light
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Nash has taken much delight in this image of the Shekinah\, the feminine presence of God in Judaism\, known as the Divine Presence (literally “indwelling”)\, that accompanied the joyous recognition of the power of the feminine principle. Such joy however was popularly accompanied by a naïve glorification of “her\,” which twisted the dark side of the feminine into light\, overlooking and casting out the realities of evil and the difficult path that leads to transformation through the hard work of integrating the shadow. In accord with Jung\, the ancient Kabbalists painted a far more varied and intricate portrait of the feminine aspect of God\, both light and dark – a spectrum of potencies ranging from creation to destruction\, from loving sexual union to demonic possession.

SUMMARY:The Incalculable Paradoxes of Love
DESCRIPTION:In Friday night’s lecture\, we will encounter what Jung called\, in his later years\, “the incalculable paradoxes of love.” Our single word “love” fails to adequately capture and express the powerful\, often contradictory feelings that drive behavior and animate one’s soul. We will turn to the three Greek words for love (eros\, philia\, and agape) and explore the psychological distinctions they express. We will look at both the inter-personal and intra-psychic dynamics of love\, as well as its light and dark sides. Finally\, we will address the healing and wounding nature of this greatest of paradoxes.

SUMMARY:Quotidian Conversations: Working with Symbolic Images in Dreams and Everyday Life
DESCRIPTION:During the Saturday workshop\, we will turn directly to the images themselves that arise when the unconscious psyche responds to the crises and concerns of everyday life\, and using the amplification of archetypal images\, engage in so-called conversational sketches. Conversational sketches are dream storyboards that offer us a dialogue with that part of ourselves that communicates in symbols. The psyche\, being wiser than our artistically challenged selves\, will respond with the wistful whisperings of dialogue\, inviting us to pay attention to our depths. Participants in the workshop will be shown how to use the expressive arts to bring out imagery from their own internal process and experiment with learning to amplify these symbols with the resources available today with online Jungian archives.

SUMMARY:Quotidian Conversations: Working with Symbolic Images in Dreams and Everyday Life
DESCRIPTION:The deeper layers of our psyches are constantly communicating with us via symbols. Amid the demands of everyday life we may notice this only in passing\, usually first giving it our attention after a dream presents us with particularly enigmatic images and we wonder what it might mean. This program is offered as a small retreat where we will take the opportunity to look at symbolic process\, the basis of Jung’s work. \nThe Friday lecture will start with a profound 28-minute film in which Yo-Yo Ma introduces his friend David Blum\, also a professional musician. David explains how\, when he left the security of his preferred language of expression\, music\, and dared to pick up some children’s pastels to draw scenes from his dreams\, he unwittingly engaged in conversation with his inner self. We follow him as he shows us his pictures and talks movingly about his own skepticism\, shyness\, curiosity and wonder\, and the unexpected reward of finding a layer of rich meaning in his colorful\, naïvely-styled pictures. In our discussion of this moving account\, we will review Jung’s ideas about symbolic images\, and include some of the newer findings from brain scans\, which unite cognition and emotion.

SUMMARY:The Healing Value of Personal Narrative: How Writing One’s Memoir Facilitates Individuation
DESCRIPTION:The Saturday workshop will involve both active imagination and writing personal narrative. This autobiographical exercise will explore one’s purpose and meaning\, that is\, one’s personal myth. This work will be shared with the group by those who wish to\, and serve as a form of creative exercise that by healing painful episodes from the past\, we enable more fulfillment in future years. We are then freed to approach the present with Soren Kierkegaard’s incisive observation- “Life can only be understood backwards\, but it must be lived forwards”- to guide us to draw on the past to live within a more individuated consciousness.

SUMMARY:The Healing Value of Personal Narrative: How Writing One’s Memoir Facilitates Individuation
DESCRIPTION:It is well known that self-disclosure in journals and autobiography in general promotes emotional and physical health. On Friday evening\, Dr. Rosen will illustrate the healing value of writing a personal narrative in the form of autobiography with a single case-study: himself. He will demonstrate the process of writing a memoir as a “haibun”-a combination of prose and haiku about his life-long pilgrimage to the center of profound mystery. His own autobiography (presented as an inner and outer journey based on his life-review\, an analysis of interviews with family and friends\, as well as dreams and experiences recorded in journals since his eighteenth year) emerged as a painful yet healing experience. When such a review is carried out in an honest and thorough way\, one’s lost soul can find its way home. As the Zen writer Matsuo Basho revealed: “Each day is a journey and the journey itself home\,” an insight echoed by Soen Nakagawa Roshi: “If you cannot return home\, your self is not your true self.”

SUMMARY:Dream Tending
DESCRIPTION:In the Saturday workshop\, Dr. Aizenstat will expand upon the concepts presented Friday night. He will further elaborate on the idea that images are alive and\, at root\, elemental – part of Nature’s Dreaming. Participants will learn methods of phenomenological dream animation and tools to work with the “indigenous image.” Attending to these potent “seed” images enhances psychological health and authentic being. This workshop combines DreamTending demonstrations by Dr. Aizenstat with experiential activities. Also\, he will offer training in skills intended to help participants work with their own core images.

SUMMARY:Dream Tending
DESCRIPTION:The “heartbeat” of DreamTending\, Dr. Aizenstat’s orientation to dreams\, is the recognition that dream images are alive. In his Friday night lecture\, he will describe his unique approach to dream work and invite us to experience dream images as living\, embodied beings — engaged in their activity\, not ours alone. DreamTending will be introduced as a system of healing\, useful in working with the afflictions of personal life as well as the conditions of the world soul\, the anima mundi. Examples and elaborations will be offered.

SUMMARY:Eros and Addiction
DESCRIPTION:The power of Eros can take us to ecstatic heights\, but also to the depths of despair. We experience this power whenever we fall in love or whenever longing for another overtakes us. As long as we remain unaware that the ideal image of the beloved is a projection of our own psychic content\, and the more our longing for wholeness is confused with the external satisfaction of erotic fantasies\, the more we can get lost in compulsive longing\, destructive relationships and sexual addictions. Understanding the archetype of Eros can help us develop a sense of how Eros can become destructively connected with addiction. We will seek to understand the nature of Eros and erotic longing in both its sensual and spiritual aspects.

SUMMARY:Engaging the Personal Shadow
DESCRIPTION:What is our personal Shadow? How may we come to know that which is by definition unconscious within us? A series of exercises and questions will help provide greater self-awareness. Our learning objectives will be to explore: \nWhat is meant by the concept of the Shadow? \n\nHow does the Shadow show up in personal\, psychological life?\nHow does the Shadow manifest collectively in social settings?\nHow does one gain a greater awareness of the personal and the collective Shadow?\n\nPlease bring a pen and journal for these exercises.

SUMMARY:Why Good People Do Bad Things: Revisiting the Shadow
DESCRIPTION:For each of us there are energies\, motives\, agendas which operate outside our conscious control and sometimes are contrary to our professed values. These energies\, which Jung collectively identified as the Shadow\, might best be defined not as evil\, but as that which makes us uncomfortable with ourselves. Such energies represent an enormous invitation for greater consciousness\, for living more ethically\, and whose integration brings a greater possibility of wholeness. This program will define and illustrate the many ways in which the Shadow operates in personal and social life.

SUMMARY:Cosmos and Psyche: Jungian Archetypes and Astrology
DESCRIPTION:Jung began to examine astrology as early as 1911\, when he mentioned his inquiries in a letter to Freud. That interest gradually developed into a major focus of investigation\, and in his later years Jung devoted himself with considerable passion to astrological research. “Astrology\,” he stated\, “represents the sum of all the psychological knowledge of antiquity.” Insights from these studies influenced many of his most significant formulations in the final\, extraordinarily fruitful phase of his life’s work\, including archetypal theory\, synchronicity\, and the philosophy of history. Since his death\, reports from his family and others close to him have revealed that in his last decades Jung came to employ the analysis of his patients’ astrological charts as a regular and integral aspect of his clinical work. \nYet astrology runs so directly counter to the long-established cosmology that encompasses the modern world view that one can appreciate Jung’s reluctance to make public the extent of his use of astrology\, and the resistance of many Jungian analysts to further explore the astrological direction their founder had pursued. However\, recent research by Richard Tarnas and Stanislav Grof gives new support for Jung’s intuition of the value of astrology and of the trans-psychic (or “psychoid”) nature of the archetypes. These observations suggest the existence of an extraordinarily consistent synchronistic correspondence between planetary movements and the archetypal patterns of human experience\, reflecting something like a cosmic anima mundi in which the human being participates. \nOn Friday\, Dr. Tarnas will summarize this evidence\, discuss the new light it sheds on the human psyche and the unfolding drama of history\, and explore the implications it holds for Jungian psychology.

SUMMARY:How to Recognize the Eight Function-Attitudes: An Approach to Psychological Typing
DESCRIPTION:To recognize at first glance the true “psychological type” of a person one is starting to get to know is no doubt a knack\, but to be able to identify the particular kind of consciousness that the person is presenting at a given moment of interaction is something that can be learned. The eight-function\, eight-archetype model of the types that John Beebe has developed greatly facilitates this learning. With the aid of clips from classic American film\, Dr. Beebe will demonstrate how this model can enable us to recognize each of the eight “functions of consciousness” that Jung described in his 1921 classic\, Psychological Types. The systematic use of Dr. Beebe’s new model\, developing Jung’s theory for our time\, is a good way to assess the results of taking an MBTI paper and pencil instrument to see if the test findings really match the conscious orientation of the person. \nTaking us into his cinematic workshop\, Dr. Beebe will share with us how he determines that one function-attitude and not another is being presented to us on the screen at a particular moment. He will show how he then goes about assessing that consciousness using Jung’s typology. He will present some telling examples of how particular archetypes colors the presentation of a particular function\, such as feeling\, thinking\, intuition\, or sensation\, and its attitude\, extraversion or introversion\, often so much as to make it seem like some other function and attitude. The goal of this daylong event is to sharpen the audience’s talent for type recognition.

SUMMARY:Trauma and Psychic Creativity
DESCRIPTION:One of the most remarkable capacities of the psyche is its ability to manage traumatic experiences. Taking as examples major innovative works of art from the history of painting and film\, Dr. Beebe will illustrate the strategies the psyche adopts when forced to manage its sense of violation and disillusionment through creativity. He will then relate the solutions endorsed by artists in times of cataclysmic social upheaval\, with the choices analytic patients sometimes are able to make when faced with overwhelming life events.

SUMMARY:Many are Called – But How to Answer?
DESCRIPTION:The word “vocation” means “a calling\,” experienced as an inner voice that prompts us to follow a certain path in life. But “vocation” is more than an occupational aptitude or career path; it involves a sense of Destiny\, of purposefulness – not merely blind Fate –that deepens our sense of self as we grow older. Jung’s theory of individuation suggests that we are each “called” to become distinct personalities\, to become conscious of ourselves and our differences\, both interpersonal and intrapersonal. But how can we answer this call in a world pressing more insistently for conformity for safety’s sake? What sort of heroism and personal responsibility is required for us to both hear and answer psyche’s call?

SUMMARY:Seabiscuit: The Little Horse that Could\, and Did\, and Still Does
DESCRIPTION:The word “hero” is so broadly used in our day that it begins to lose its mythic sense. But the mythic Hero – larger than life and required to accomplish impossible tasks at great risk\, bringing hope and redemption to lesser mortals – stands in an important relationship to the Self. Implied in the Hero’s grand mission are ideas of personal responsibility and vocation\, two themes we meet frequently in Jung’s theory of individuation but do not often examine. This presentation\, illustrated with film clips from the feature film\, Seabiscuit\, will invite conversation about the collective psychological phenomenon that was a horse named Seabiscuit – a true mythic Hero\, and the human partners who engaged with him in a mutual process of transformation.

SUMMARY:Writing: The Door In
DESCRIPTION:Using innovative techniques inspired by Natalie Goldberg and Julia Cameron in their presentations on creative writing\, as well as Tess Castleman’s own approach devised from fifteen years of conducting writing seminars\, workshop participants will engage in an experiential writing process drawing upon their inner world. Participants will benefit from giving expression to their own voices\, especially if they have been told that writing is not one of their talents or special abilities. (They will not be required to read their writing to the group\, but will be given the opportunity to do so if they choose to.) During the day\, a series of different exercises will guide us as we travel into the labyrinth of our inner resources to discover potentials that generally are unknown to us and largely untapped in our lives. Please bring journals or notebooks\, at least two pens\, or a laptop to record the results of our exploration.

SUMMARY:Creativity: The Holy Other as Transcendent Healer in Analysis\, Community and Culture
DESCRIPTION:Although neither traditional nor radically alternative\, creative expression in Jungian analysis arises as the third transcendent healing opportunity\, completing the dyad of analyst and analysand. This creative third can be a dream or an active imagination\, sometimes in the form of a work of art\, sometimes not\, but always expressing the transcendent function of the Self in its creative play of the tension of opposites. Using examples from clinical cases\, social experiments\, and excerpts from the films of the Japanese master director Akira Kurosawa\, the function of creativity will be explored both on a personal basis and in its larger collective and cultural role in our societies and our world community.

SUMMARY:The Crises and Conflicts of Spiritual Awakening
DESCRIPTION:Jung wrote\, “The experience of the Self is always a defeat for the ego.” Since spiritual awakening offers a direct challenge to the primacy of ego consciousness and the myth of separation\, it is no surprise that such a challenge can produce a period of confusion and unbalance. Jung himself endured such a crisis. His ego was overwhelmed by an infusion of spiritual energies\, which at first he was unable to integrate. We find warnings about perils on the path in most spiritual traditions. Becoming attached to various powers or siddhis\, preoccupation with inner visions\, splitting between “higher” and “lower” parts of the personality\, ego-inflation and deflation are examples of how spiritual awakening can go awry. We will contemplate Jung’s own crisis of spiritual emergence and discuss how to recognize and work with psychospiritual conflicts in ourselves. Psychotherapists will find this workshop pertinent to their daily work.

SUMMARY:The Coming of Light at Times of Darkness
DESCRIPTION:Tonight we celebrate the coming of the holiday season. The Winter Solstice\, the longest night and the shortest day of the year\, is a symbol of the coming of light when the powers of darkness are at their strongest. Darkness eventually gives way to light\, just as dark nights of the soul soften our egos and lift our faces to the Self. Moreover\, if we ponder them from the perspective of Sufi\, esoteric Christian\, and related paths\, darkness and light also refer to states of consciousness that are healing if we access them. Darkness is the holding\, containing Mother-Father consciousness\, sometimes called the Absolute\, which gives birth to Light\, symbol of the Holy Child and the essential Self of every human being. Tonight\, Dr. Wittine will describe these states of consciousness by drawing on Jungian theory\, esoteric teachings\, and experiences of people doing inner work. He will also discuss techniques of meditation to help us enter these states. The Crises and Conflicts of Spiritual Awakening.

SUMMARY:An Unlikely Heroine
DESCRIPTION:Together\, we will watch Dangerous Beauty\, the story of a sixteenth century Venetian courtesan who has been tutored in the fine art of lovemaking\, poetry and conversation. Ironically\, it is she who is uniquely positioned to stand on her own long enough to be valued for herself\, providing a remarkable role model for those of us in search of feminine strength. In our discussion of the film\, we will delve deeper to excavate the too easily idealized\, then quickly maligned\, but very precious archetypal feminine. This is not just a women’s issue! Men and women alike are suffering the severe consequences of a marginalized feminine. We all carry a form of the feminine within and are better off if we have a good relationship to Her. So\, men\, please feel welcome; you are sorely needed in this discussion.

SUMMARY:Oh\, Sister Where Art Thou?
DESCRIPTION:We live in a remarkable time\, a time in which our intellectual prowess is unsurpassed and seems to grow in leaps and bounds. We can soar to the moon\, design life in a test tube and condense the entire encyclopedia into a tiny chip. Our brains are in overdrive and yet\, something is sorely missing. Some characterize this element that is lacking as a HER – a more feminine way of being. Despite years of progress within the women’s movement\, the breadth and depth of the feminine archetype has plenty of wilderness yet to be explored. By Her very nature\, She is hard to describe – emotional\, relational\, closer to the instinctual and natural worlds. Rather than trying to get to know Her\, we prefer to tame\, control and manage Her. She complies as She adapts\, adorns and abdicates Her own genuine authority. And everybody loses. What sets Her apart? Why is She so easily demonized? What are we afraid of? What is your relationship to the feminine? How do you respond to the feminine in others? How can we help Her thrive in this world?
