SUMMARY:Opening the Gift
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is designed to foster an experiential exploration of the material presented in Friday’s lecture.   After choosing a personal “orienting intention” for the workshop\, everyone will select a wrapped gift.  Before unwrapping the gift\, we will take time to expl ore our expectations\, thoughts\, feelings\, intuitions\, sensory impressions\, and attitudes stirred by this “unknown other\,” symbolized by the wrapped gift.  Then\, as we each unwrap our gift\, we will have a chance to observe our approach to discovering the “other\,” including the ways our expectations around the anticipated (wrapped) gift have influenced our experience of the actual (unwrapped) gift. Through drawing\, painting\, collage-making\, and clay-molding\, we will explore the visual language of the unconscious\, our personal pacing\, inner resources\, and rituals for honoring what is meaningful to us in such dialogues with the unconscious. Participants’ experiences will be discussed and amplified in terms of Jungian concepts and depth work as applicable to creative projects\, psychotherapy\, and personal growth.  ART MATERIALS  WILL BE PROVIDED BY OFJ.  SPACE IS LIMITED — REGISTER EARLY.

SUMMARY:Exploring the Visual Language of the Unconscious
DESCRIPTION:The realm of psyche is immeasurably great and filled with living reality. -C.G. Jung \nIn her lecture\, Jane Zich will explore the “living reality” of the psyche as evidenced in the visual language of the unconscious that emerges in depth psychotherapy\, dreams\,\nfilms\, and extended active imagination processes. She will use paintings from her Vision Journey series — an image-mediated dialogue with the unconscious that has spanned seven years — to illustrate how recurrent cycles and shifts in imagery suggest a purposefulness in the visual language of the unconscious that can promote and support an “I-Thou” attitude of partnership between ego consciousness and the unconscious. Specific psychological tasks that seem required for specific stages or types of imagery will be described\, as well as impasses that tend to result when those tasks are avoided or incompletely met. Dr. Zich will illustrate the role of  “orienting intentions” in navigating extended dialogues with the unconscious\, and will refer to image stages and related tasks for ego consciousness that can be seen in C.G. Jung’s Red Book\, in cultural contexts\, and in societal impasses. Time for discussion will follow.

SUMMARY:God: Finding a Perspective for Our Time
DESCRIPTION:The role that religion continues to play in today’s secular world is distressing to some and comforting to others. Jung’s notion of a “religious instinct” and his understanding of the “God-image” in the psyche provide a point of entry into the controversy and a fitting perspective for our times. Through viewing film clips\, personal reflection and discussion of the changing God-image\, this workshop aims to equip participants with timely\, intelligent ways to approach prevailing religious questions. It will move toward contemplating a sense of the sacred that is conversant with today’s individual and collective challenges.

SUMMARY:The God Complex
DESCRIPTION:Notions of divinity are psychoactive. Whether one is a believer\, an atheist\, an agnostic\, a spiritual seeker or a student of religion\, it is difficult to contemplate questions of God without significant investment in the answers. This lecture will discuss the “complex” psychology of our response to the God topic. It will show how a Jungian approach can provide a way to negotiate the associated conundrums and controversies. From contemplating the death of God to the psychodynamics of fundamentalism and the search for meaning in between\, our goal will be a deeper appreciation of the psychological stakes involved.

SUMMARY:The I Ching: The Imagination of Integrity
DESCRIPTION:Analytical psychology\, with its emphasis on intuitive images\, has frequently recorded the way a particularly arresting inner image can foster healing.   Comparing the psychotherapist’s work to that of the Renaissance alchemist\, similarly engaged in promoting a process of transformation\, Jung was fond of quoting the hermetic maxim\, “For those who have the image\, the passage is easy.”    But how does a patient in psychotherapy “have” the image that has such a transformative effect on personality and behavior?  John Beebe believes the image needs to be “achieved\,” a process that involves heart and mind in submitting to the contours of the image\, allowing it to communicate its pattern to our minds\, which must then translate the image in an authentic way to us so that we come to live inside it.   If we allow ourselves to become shaped by the image\, rather than trying to shape it to our own ends\, it will show us a new way to live.  In this lecture\, Dr. Beebe will draw on insights and images from classical Chinese philosophy\, especially Taoist and Confucian understandings of integrity\, and the Book of Transformations\, the I Ching\, to help us see and feel the dynamic potential of this process.

SUMMARY:Left by the Side of the Road: Individuation and Homecoming
DESCRIPTION:This workshop explores the connection between the psychoid archetype presented in the Friday evening lecture and individuation. Beginning with that beautiful story of the rainmaker that Jung tells in Mysterium Coniunctionis\, we will explore how a radical ecology that puts us in harmony with nature presumes and requires a sense of harmony within oneself. \nFor Jung individuation refers to those moments and occasions in one’s life when one is called to follow the law of one’s own being\, to become the person one was meant to be. Such moments often occur in mid- life\, but they can take place at any moment of important transitions. Anxiety most often accompanies these moments and they are also quite often expressed in dreams and symptoms. Individuation is a crisis but as such it is not only a danger\, it is also an opportunity. Individuation presents each of us with the chance to transform one’s fate into a destiny. \nIn this workshop we will explore Jung’s theme of individuation as a process of homecoming and show how in coming home to oneself one also comes home to the world. Through music\, film\, story and poetry we will create a space of reverie in which we will make use of dream material\, symptoms\, fantasies\, and writing exercises to tap into the creative unconscious in order to begin the work of transforming memory into memoir. Together we will engage in a journey whose steps include slowing down\, learning to linger in the moment and adopting an attitude of hospitality that allows us to be turned back toward and to be addressed by those aspects of ourselves that have been forgotten\, ignored\, abandoned\, left behind or otherwise sacrificed. Along this path we will engage those who wait for us with the unfinished business of our lives. \nThe goal of this workshop is for each participant to begin crafting a narrative of homecoming that arises within a slowness that reaches toward the stillness of a solitude that reaches toward the silence of a sorrow that reaches toward and be-comes serenity.

SUMMARY:Psyche and Nature: Inner Journeys in the Outer World
DESCRIPTION:With his idea of the psychoid archetype Jung explored a level of the unconscious where psyche and nature are  one.  In this lecture\, Dr. Romanyshyn will show  how what we have called the unconscious is at this level the conscious of nature within us. Presenting a DVD he made after returning from a journey he took to the Antarctic in Nov. 2009\, Dr. Romanyshyn will describe how this journey in the outer world began with a journey in the inner world of a dream of more than 30 years ago. He will also suggest in this lecture that the format of the DVD\, which presents 86 images set to music accompanied by a voice over\, deepens a psychology of mind\, where the inner world of psyche and the outer world of nature are separate\, into an aesthetics of the heart\, where the inner and the outer intersect each other. In addition Dr. Romanyshyn will also consider how psychology as an aesthetic response to nature can be the foundation for a radical ecology that attends to the crises of nature as a symptom calling us to re-member the broken connections between the world and us.

SUMMARY:The Tropics of Desire: The Soul’s Expressions of Coniunctio in Dreams and Life
DESCRIPTION: This talk entails a re-imagining of the dynamics of the anima and animus in light of modern arousal studies\, gender identity theory and discourse analysis. \nJung’s theory of the anima and animus was crucial to his crowning works of Mysterium Coniunctionis  and Aion\, and remains a centerpiece of thinking about lived relationship. However the original formulation has been correctly riddled with accusations of anachronism\, gender bias and linguistic naivete.  Because of these difficulties it has been either used unreflectively or abandoned\, not coincidentally in a similar way to modern attitudes toward religion.  This talk re-imagines the deepest path of the animae as they lead to the self – in theory\, in dreams and in lived relationship.

SUMMARY:Individuation\, Jung\, and Eastern Thought
DESCRIPTION:Inner work did not begin with Jung; it has rich traditions in India and the Far East.  In this workshop we will compare Jungian ideas about individuation with Eastern traditions.  Dr. Ruhl will present practical techniques for quieting the mind’s constant chatter and talking back to dysfunctional mental patterns that keep us stuck.  Other topics will include psychological inflation versus enlightenment\, the myth of meaning\, and the wisdom of uncertainty and insecurity.

SUMMARY:Balancing Heaven and Earth
DESCRIPTION:How should we balance the inner and the outer\, the masculine and the feminine\, the eternal and the every day?  In struggling with goals and duties\, how do we also attend to the workings of destiny and the cosmos?  Utilizing a three-thousand-year-old story from India\,The Ramayana\, as guide\, this talk explores the Eastern genius for the development of consciousness.  Each of the characters in this individuation tale represents a part of the human psyche – all of which must be dealt with during the journey of life. This story takes a very different approach to the feminine and to evil than individuation stories in the West\, and provides unique insights about living through a time when cultural traditions and values seem to be breaking down.

SUMMARY:Technology and Soul: Living at the Turning Point - Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The history of psychopathology is curiously linked to industrialization and the mechanizing of life. In this workshop we’ll take a look back at the cultural-historical weave of technology and depth psychology\, and then consider how Jungian perspectives have been working to compensate for the culture’s increasing speed and incessant innovation. Together\, we’ll reflect on ways to preserve soul in the face of these changes and explore how technology might support rather than erode our psychic foundations. Cinematic images will be used to aid this exploration.

SUMMARY:Technology and Soul: Living at the Turning Point
DESCRIPTION:Technology brings many gifts\, but the constant innovation and change have a psychological cost. We can become disoriented or distracted and lose sight of the inner compass. Finding our direction in these liquid times is a challenge—a challenge that’s only going to deepen . . . \nUntil recently\, our gadgets have remained largely external and have not directly altered our basic nature. Today\, however\, we stand on the threshold of reengineering our essential being. For large numbers of people cyberspace has already begun to replace everyday life. Devices designed to further the adaptation of mind and body to the computer world are already in the works. Chip implants beneath our skin will soon be commonplace. Around these innovations lies a sea of developments in psychotropic medication\, genetic engineering\, plastic surgery and robotics\, all aiming to transform the very fabric of our existence. \nThe impact these changes will make on the psyche is an unexplored question. Uncovering the shadow side of this ultimate makeover seems critical\, but simply turning back may not be an option. How then are we to respond? \nJung was leery of technology. He once said\, “civilized man . . . is in danger of losing all contact with the world of instinct\,” adding that this loss “is largely responsible for the pathological condition of contemporary culture.” In this lecture Jung’s understanding of instinctual life and psychological wellbeing will be discussed in light of impending technologies. We’ll try to find our psychological feet in the face of this tinkering with Nature.

SUMMARY:Psychoid : The Chaotic Dynamics of Individuation
DESCRIPTION:We’ll begin our day with a review of chaos theory\, and then look at how the unconscious deals with life’s challenges\, both before consciousness forms and afterwards\, in those instances when consciousness can neither understand nor cope with the chaos of life. \nHow do unconscious adaptations to previous problems influence our perceptions and behaviors today? By bringing consciousness to bear on our patterns of perception and behavior\, we’ll identify unconscious adaptations that were once brilliant solutions to intractable problems but have since become problems themselves as our life situations have changed. \nWhile all interactions with the unconscious involve pathos\, this will not be a group therapy session. Rather\, it will be a time filled with all the humor\, fascination\, fun\, befuddlement\, amazement\, and mutual discovery of dealing with the unconscious\, which always has the best of intentions\, but not always the most flexible of approaches. That’s why it needs an ego to modify it. \nIn this workshop\, we’ll fill that need.

SUMMARY:Psychoid: The Chaotic Dynamics of Individuation
DESCRIPTION:The overall theme of the lecture and workshop this weekend will be the way in which the chaotic dynamics of the individuation process originate in the body. Chaos refers to those highly de-stabilizing disturbances in our lives that contribute to growth and stability. We’ll see how these disturbances resonate with the unconscious\, operate throughout our lives\, and express themselves symbolically. Recognizing and understanding their symbolic expressions allows us to move beyond those patterns that keep us stuck\, freeing us to participate in the unconscious chaos at work in our lives. \nJung and Jungians have always been fascinated with that which exists beyond consciousness. What is the unconscious? How can we perceive and decipher its symbolism? How can ego and unconscious work together to further individuation? \nWe’re not the only ones interested in the unconscious\, science is\, too. Recent discoveries in genetics\, microbiology and biochemistry have increased our understanding of the most basic dynamics of physical processes\, especially those that influence how we perceive\, process and respond to the world around us. Psycho-neuro-endocrinal-immunology\, for example\, studies how the nervous\, endocrine and immune systems interact with psyche. \nJung referred to that part of the psyche where mind and body overlap as psychoid; In the psychoid realm of the psyche\, mind and body influence and modify each other. \nTonight we’ll review how the smallest molecules have enormous effects on us. We’ll see how physical processes possess a consciousness greater than the ego’s. Finally\, we’ll compare current research with that of the alchemists\, particularly how the “organic alchemy” of today exactly parallels the inorganic alchemy of years past.

SUMMARY:A Depth Psychology Approach to Understanding Suffering and Evil
DESCRIPTION:In the morning\, Lionel Corbett will lead a workshop exploring how suffering and evil can be understood through a psychological lens using the stories of Job and Medea\, and by considering them as contemporary individuals seeking relief from their own suffering or destructive impulses. Dr. Corbett will explore the relationship between Job’s character structure and his experience of the numinous. In the afternoon\, Dr. Corbett will explore the admonition that Jung received from an inner figure (as recorded in his journal\, the Red Book) to herald a new spirituality. He will also address the concept of the Self as a “Spiritus Rector” (spiritual guide).

SUMMARY:A Depth Psychology Approach to the Sacred—Spirituality Without a Formal Religious Tradition
DESCRIPTION:n his latest book Psyche and the Sacred: Spirituality beyond Religion\, Lionel Corbett helps modern people discover the numinous presence of the divine within themselves as they live a busy life filled with secular activities. Dr. Corbett will talk about ways to find spiritually meaningful life without the need to embrace any particular theology. This approach also serves to deepen the spirituality of those who are committed to a religious tradition.

SUMMARY:Creativity as Repair and Transformation
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop participants will explore aids to the mourning process by awakening the imaginal realm with various exercises in active imagination. We will attempt to identify our personal myth and look for ways to connect our inner and outer worlds through symbols. In addition\, we will see various practical ways we can use to open ourselves to healing and transformative experiences. Although there will be times for discussion and sharing our stories\, silence will always by honored. Please wear comfortable clothing; bring journals and any personal art supplies you may have.

SUMMARY:Archetypal Aspects of the Mourning Process
DESCRIPTION:In Jungʼs last active imagination in The Red Book\, Christ offers Jung “the beauty of suffering.” These paradoxical lines are not popular in todayʼs Western culture\, nor are they very comforting to one who is deep in grief. More than likely after great loss\, we lose our commonsense and faith in lifeʼs predictability. Sometimes all we believed in comes into question and we feel as if we have no standpoint. Mourning takes place in a period of liminality\, a marginal phase when we cannot go back in time and we do not know what lies ahead. This time of life is mostly painful and chaotic. Yet countless ordinary people who have worked through grief testify that they wouldnʼt return to how they were\, psychologically or spiritually\, before their ordeal. In this presentation\, we will explore the deep emotions and the wisdom of the heart that can come after great losses\, including bodily injury\, health\, home\, and community\, separation\, and death. We will observe how the work of grief may enhance the individuation process\, and\, using New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina as example\, we will ponder how individuation may evolve in a city.

SUMMARY:Stories Told\, Stories Untold\, Stories that Tell Us
DESCRIPTION:Our lives course with stories – stories that run through us from ancestors\, stories we tell others and tell ourselves\, and stories of which we are unaware and thereby tell us.   We will reflect on the role these stories play in the shaping of our lives\, and how they invite us to greater consciousness of what invisibly informs the visible world.

SUMMARY:The Shadows and Gifts of American Narcissism
DESCRIPTION:In the Saturday workshop\, we will turn to a more in depth discussion about how individual and collective trauma underlie the development of character structures. Again\, with reference to the work of Anselm Kiefer\, we will see how these images evoke a shudder\, a chilling recognition of the devastation left by the eruption of the primal force of destruction. In this context\, Dr. West will clarify how\, in terms of the development of character structures\, three differentiated sets of archetypal images underlie three distinguishable relational patterns. These archetypal forces are met and mediated by consciousness as it progressively develops. When this development proceeds effectively\, three differentiated forms of healthy narcissism emerge. However\, when defenses rigidify this process\, archetypal forces accrue and eventually erupt. Dr. West will consider how the collusion of these archetypal fields\, met by a defensively rigidified and polarizing consciousness\, can cast us into repetitive personal crises as well as irresolvable global confrontations.

SUMMARY:The Shadows and Gifts of American Narcissism
DESCRIPTION:The American psyche has typically been seen as narcissistic. Indeed\, we readily identify with the heroic\, the good\, and the brave. However\, these noble portraits cast a long shadow. In this Friday evening lecture\, Dr. West will supplement a Jungian exploration of this complex reality with slides and discussion about the works of a contemporary European artist\, Anselm Kiefer. In Kiefer’s work\, we experience an active engagement with the tension between destruction and creation. The ability to embody a union of opposites emerges from a strong and flexible consciousness that can hold such a paradoxical position. Consciousness that has developed this strength and flexibility is supported as one works through the dynamics of exhibitionism and grandiosity\, ultimately forging a healthy narcissism: an embodied self-esteem\, a rooted sense of values\, and a capacity to tolerate vulnerability and limits. We witness these dynamics and developments within Kiefer’s work. With these developments\, an individual – and a community or nation – can work to engage in an effective dialogue with primal forces that carry the potential for both apocalypse and epiphany. With these strengths\, we deepen our capacity to confront and suffer the tragic personal and historical realities in which we participate.

SUMMARY:The Tibetan Book of the Dead and Everyday Life
DESCRIPTION:Our workshop will make it clear that The Tibetan Book of the Dead is not just for the dead!  Using Jungian tools to decipher the text we will see just how and when we can act to change our patterns of behavior during the critical “bardo” or in-between phases of experience.  Our extra time will give us the opportunity to dive into the intricate and beautiful images – to purely appreciate them\, to understand them a little better\, and as a way to understand ourselves or our patients.  Bring your bad habits and your imagination!

SUMMARY:The Tibetan Book of the Dead and Everyday Life
DESCRIPTION:The Tibetan Book of the Dead\, or Bardo Thodol\, is a manual or guide for the 49-day period between a person’s death and their next rebirth.  Written in Tibet in the middle ages\, it describes the entities and experiences that await all of us in the bardo\, or the in-between.  Many strange and scary things happen in that intermediate phase\, and it is best\, from the point of view of the text\, to be prepared.  In fact\, if one is prepared enough\, the moment of death can be the most opportune time to achieve liberation.  This occurs when you can see what is happening\, including the most terrifying images\, as aspects of your own mind. \nJung writes that the Bardo Thodol makes “clear to the dead man the primacy of the psyche\, for that is the one thing which life does not make clear to us.  We are so hemmed in by things which jostle and oppress that we never get the chance\, in the midst of all these ‘given’ things\, to wonder by whom they are ‘given’.  It is from this world of given things that the dead man liberates himself; and the purpose of the instructions is to help him toward this liberation.   we … learn from the very first paragraphs the that ‘giver’ of all ‘given’ things dwells within us.  This is a truth which in the face of all evidence\, in the greatest things as well as in the smallest\, is never known although it is often so very necessary\, indeed vital\, for us to know it.”  (vol 11: 514) \nWhy does Jung say this is vital?  Because this exploration of the in-between has the capacity to liberate us in this life\, long before the body dies. \nOur lecture will include a brief history of the Bardo Thodol and then a symbolic exploration of its other reality.  We will look at it compared to the Egyptian Book of the Dead and Jung’s own opus of the undiscovered country\, The Red Book.  Finally we will ground it in our daily lives as a useful and inspirational tool that has something to say to everyone.  Fantastic images will accompany the lecture.

SUMMARY:Cosmic Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Jung made the distinction between the personal dream and the big dream\, noting that\, while the personal dream helps us maintain day-to-day psychic balance\, the big dream concerns universal human problems and occurs during critical phases of life.  We will explore the images\, symbols\, and callings stemming from dreams that appear at critical junctures and that reveal our place in the cosmos. We will see how numinous dreams of nature and cosmos help us transcend the polarities behind our alienation from nature\, our selves\, and one another.  Participants are invited to share dreams containing archetypal and cosmic motifs.
