SUMMARY:Primal Fears Explored with Humanity’s Oldest Story as Our Guide – The Epic of Gilgamesh
DESCRIPTION:Humanity’s most primal fear is the fear of death.  The desire to escape physical death is a  fundamental fact of human existence.  Recent technological advancements in medicine and robotics have made the ability to live forever a much more tantalizing possibility.   In this lecture and workshop\, we will explore the meaning of this primal fear and fundamental yearning\, using humanity’s oldest story\, The Epic of Gilgamesh\, as our guide. This story from ancient Iraq tells of the exploits of mighty King Gilgamesh whose fear of physical death compelled him to seek out a legendary figure considered to be the only human granted immortality by the gods. Gilgamesh’s exploits reflect enduring truths about our fears and desires and suggest how we can better prepare for life’s ultimate goal. During the Friday lecture\, we will discuss the contemporary search for immortality and sketch the elements of the Gilgamesh story. On Saturday\, we will use lecture and discussion to explore the roots of our own yearning for immortality with the Gilgamesh story as a valuable guide.

SUMMARY:Light Hearted Evening and Annual Meeting: Individuation and the Creative Process
DESCRIPTION:OFJ members and their guests are invited to our annual meeting.  The keynote speaker for this event will be Portland artist and author TED KATZ speaking on “INDIVIDUATION AND THE CREATIVE PROCESS.”  FRIDAY\, MAY 17\, 7:00 TO 9:30 PM\, AT THE FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH\, COLLINS HALL\, 1838 SW JEFFERSON\, PORTLAND.  This is also an opportunity to meet the board\, honor our volunteers\, and find out about next fall’s speakers. Light refreshments will be served. \nThrough projected images of his paintings and excerpts from his short stories\, Dr. Katz will elucidate the process of individuation as it unfolds through the interplay of creative effort and the unconscious.  The Greek poet\, Pindar\, said\, “Learn what you are and be such.”  That challenge leads to a thorny and fascinating adventure.

SUMMARY:The Chenoo Who Stayed to Dinner: Taming the Monstrous Negative Father Complex
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, we will explore Jung’s theory of complexes.  We will consider how a wounded relationship with a father can affect our inner world and our creativity.  After looking at the two primary ways that a father complex can manifest\, we will explore the persecutory or monstrous complex in greater depth.  The Algonquin fairytale “Nesoowa and the Chenoo” will structure the our exploration\, which will include journaling and reflective exercises.  Excerpts from two films\, a dream sequence that spanned several years of analytic work\, and additional fairytales will also be considered.

SUMMARY:Marrying Mr. Rochester: Charlotte Brontë and the Transformation of the Seductive Negative Father Complex
DESCRIPTION:A negative father complex can undermine our trust of ourselves – as well as the ability to experience ourselves as basically good and competent.  However\, creative engagement with this complex allows us to experience its helpful side.  In this lecture\, we will explore in depth one way that a negative father complex can manifest and how it can be transformed.  This process will be amplified by considering Charlotte Brontë’s life and her novel Jane Eyre\, as well as clinical material\, dreams\, and Grimm’s tale “The Singing\, Springing Lark.”

SUMMARY:Film Screening: My Name was Sabina Spielrein
DESCRIPTION:OFJ will offer a screening of the 2002 film MY NAME WAS SABINA SPIELREIN (in German\, with English subtitles). This event will be held at UNITY CHURCH OF PORTLAND (4525 SE STARK ST.); beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Friday March 22nd. ADMISSION WILL BE FREE FOR ALL — MEMBERS AND NON-MEMBERS. \nMy Name Was Sabina Spielrein is a docudrama which draws extensively upon a recently discovered trove of correspondence between Sabina Spielrein and the founders of depth psychology. An early patient of both Jung and Freud\, Ms. Spielrein was a lifelong seeker. In this film\, her connections to Jung and Freud are explored in the context of her personal struggles as well as the turbulent history of Europe during the first half of the 20th century. Local Jungian analyst Martha Blake will lead a discussion of this film following the screening.

SUMMARY:Transforming Compulsion
DESCRIPTION:The workshop was a deeper exploration of the elements discussed in the lecture. \n…Wherever we are still attached\, we are still possessed; and when we are possessed\, there is one stronger than us who possesses us….  It is not a matter of indifference whether one calls something a ‘mania’ or a ‘god.’  To serve a mania is detestable and undignified\, but to serve a god is full of meaning and promise ….  (C.G. SUMMARY:Transforming Compulsion
DESCRIPTION:Compulsions arise organically in the psyche – often in troubling opposition to our conscious intentions.  They can occur as images\, ideas\, emotions\, or actions.  From a Jungian perspective\, compulsions seek to transform us.  Indeed\, compulsions are often intensely disturbing precisely because they arise from attitudes that have become dangerously one-sided; and yet they beckon to us from the drive toward wholeness that animates the psyche.  If the content of a compulsion can be understood symbolically\, it becomes a portal to transformation. \nMr. Stebbins will explore the phenomenology and dynamics of compulsions with the goal of elucidating their transformative potential. (C.G. SUMMARY:The Other Side of Christmas: Incarnation as the Awesome Burden of Opposites
DESCRIPTION:The Incarnation\, at the core of the Christian mythos and message\, can be celebrated joyfully at Christmas as a union of opposites between human and divine\, but one which also ennobles us with the burden of what Jung calls “the divine problem”:  the paradox of divine wrath and love\, destruction and renewal.  As Jung puts it\, “Christ has shown how everybody will be crucified upon his destiny\,” a concept that includes shouldering the opposites in one’s psyche.  At the collective level that cross includes destructive impulses that have become incarnate in the reckless exploitation of the earth for oil and profit.  The threat of global catastrophe from irreversible global warming coexists (paradoxically) with love for the very children and grandchildren who will inherit our planet.

SUMMARY:“The Sailor Cannot See the North”: The Psychospiritual Dilemma of Our Time
DESCRIPTION:“The sailor cannot see the north / but knows the needle can.”\n~ Emily Dickinson \nWhat are the sources of guidance for a thoughtful person in our country amid political fractionation\, animosity\, divisive ideologies\, and numbing distractions—a time in which the individual has an enormous summons to social\, psychological\, and spiritual integrity?  This presentation will challenge the audience to assume responsibility for a thoughtful\, discerned\, and experientially verified authority\, one which bases itself on respect for others\, but also embodies a willingness to show up\, to be different\, to stand for something real.

SUMMARY:Wisdom of the Primordial Psyche
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is an opportunity to expand and deepen our exploration of the ancient ancestors at work in the contemporary psyche. We will further examine dreams and the archetypal images that emerge from these deeper levels of psyche.  We will experientially touch into the ranges of the primal psyche through image\, sound\, guided visualization and dream work. Workshop participants are invited to bring their own dreams relating to this material — to the living reality of our primal ancestors and their ancient wisdom.

SUMMARY:The Call of Our Ancient Ancestors
DESCRIPTION:In the Red Book\, Jung writes: “When something long since passed . . . comes back again in a changed world\, it is new. To give birth to the ancient in a new time is creation.” The ancient ancestors are now coming back into the world through dreams\, bringing a new energy – a revitalization of the psyche both individually and collectively.  Jung deeply valued the archaic levels of human consciousness and often encouraged his patients to make contact with the “the two-million-year-old” man or woman within.  He believed that “most of our difficulties come from losing contact with our instincts\, with the age-old unforgotten wisdom stored up in us”.  This presentation is an exploration of the dreams of modern Western-educated people in which ancient ancestral wisdom makes itself known.  It will include a discussion of “big dreams”\, an introduction to the levels of the unconscious as Jung sketched them\, and an exploration of archetypal images that belong to this range of being\, the wisdom of the primordial psyche.

SUMMARY:The Unseen Wounds of War
DESCRIPTION:Building on the keynote address\, Dr. Joseph Bobrow will explore the hidden substrate of trauma that is both a devastating legacy of war and also a sustaining force in the long cycle of violent conflict that stretches from antiquity to the present.  The role of collective dissociation will be addressed in the context of the mass psychology of war.  Constructive engagement between civilians and veterans will be considered as an avenue for deep personal and collective healing.

SUMMARY:What it Means to Go to War
DESCRIPTION:What are we demanding of young men and women when we send them to war? Have we prepared them for what they will experience on the battlefield? In this keynote address\, Karl Marlantes will draw upon his experience as a war veteran to explore the psychological realities of war at the personal and collective levels. Parsifal and other mythic figures in literature will be amplified in the context of core themes in Jungian psychology – archetypes\, initiation\, and the shadow – with the goal of illuminating the archetypal role of the warrior and what it means to go to war.

SUMMARY:Understanding Our Moment in History: An Archetypal Perspective
DESCRIPTION:This will be a deeper examination of the ideas raised in the Friday night lecture: \nOur time is pervaded by a great paradox. On the one hand\, we see signs of an unprecedented level of engaged global awareness\, moral sensitivity to the human and non-human community\, psychological self-awareness\, and spiritually informed philosophical pluralism. On the other hand\, we confront the most critical\, and in some respects catastrophic\, state of the Earth in human history. Both these conditions have emerged directly from the modern age\, whose light and shadow consequences now affect every part of the planet. \nWe seem to be living at the end of an era. The past and the future are converging in our time with extraordinary force. Old structures are cracking\, the moment of creative chaos is upon us\, and the drama of our age has become a great question: What new principles\, what new structures—social\, political\, economic\, ecological\, psychological\, spiritual—will emerge to shape our future? So much is at stake. We are facing a threshold of fundamental collective transformation that bears a striking resemblance to what takes place on the individual level in initiatory rites of passage\, in near-death experiences\, in spiritual crises\, and in critical stages of what Jung called the individuation process. Can we find a place of equilibrium\, an eye in the storm\, from which we can engage this time of intense polarization and radical change? And in such an era of transition\, what is the role of “heroic” communities like that of Jungian institutes and societies — or the Bioneers or Schumacher\, CIIS or Pacifica\, Esalen or Findhorn — which carry principles and perspectives that run counter to the mainstream modern world view? \nTo help us navigate this threshold of transformation\, we need multiple perspectives and sources of insight. Join Richard Tarnas this weekend as he draws on depth psychology and archetypal astrology\, philosophy\, religion\, and cultural history as we seek together a larger context for both understanding and action.

SUMMARY:The “Spiritualized Earth” and the Birth of the New Consciousness
DESCRIPTION:A continuation of Friday’s lecture\, we will learn how both Jung and Steiner came to Goethe\, as well as more fully discuss principles common to both: the law of polarity\, the law of diversity\, and the importance of boundaries\, whether those boundaries be in the human psyche\, of a farm\, or in the consulting room. Practical applications of the concepts will be given both in farming and analytic work. This will include a description of the biodynamic preparations\, stirring\, and Patricia’s use of the preparations and why. We will experiment with a technique of Goethe’s to gather information: a method that develops relatedness\, facilitating an openness to what is present\, whether that be the psyche\, another human being\, or the not-human. \nWe will also explore the old Jewish Legend of what happened to the Tree of Paradise after the Fall\, considering the questions: What consciousness might be born in the temenos offered in both Jung’s analytical psychology and Steiner’s farming techniques? What are the implications for our relationship with the environment? We will discuss dominion over and being in relation to\, whether that be with inner figures\, other humans\, or not-humans. Please bring writing and drawing materials.

SUMMARY:The “Spiritualized Earth” and the Birth of the New Consciousness
DESCRIPTION:“the psychological problem of today is a spiritual problem\, a religious problem…” —C. G. Jung\, C.G. Jung Speaking: Interview and Encounters\, “Does the World stand on the Verge of Spiritual Rebirth?” \n\n\nSuffering the trials of her individuation process and initiation as a Jungian analyst as well as those of a concurrent farming crisis\, Patricia Damery found answers through a series of unconventional teachers and through her relationship to the psyche and the land\, answers that are surprising deeply intertwined. These answers involved spiritual tools that addressed what Jung called “the living substance” of ourselves and others.\n\n  \nIn this lecture Patricia will describe the common\, definitive root of some of these teachings in the writings and scientific studies of Goethe. Both C. G. Jung and Rudolf Steiner\, father of Biodynamic farming\, were deeply influenced by Goethe’s work\, a perspective denigrated since the days of Descartes. What supports the “living substance” in ourselves and the other\, even the not-human? What undermines its liveliness? Practical applications in the dynamics of “being in relationship with” and “having dominion over” will be given\, whether in analysis\, farming\, or our relationship to the environment.

SUMMARY:Opening the Gift
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is designed to foster an experiential exploration of the material presented in Friday’s lecture.   After choosing a personal “orienting intention” for the workshop\, everyone will select a wrapped gift.  Before unwrapping the gift\, we will take time to expl ore our expectations\, thoughts\, feelings\, intuitions\, sensory impressions\, and attitudes stirred by this “unknown other\,” symbolized by the wrapped gift.  Then\, as we each unwrap our gift\, we will have a chance to observe our approach to discovering the “other\,” including the ways our expectations around the anticipated (wrapped) gift have influenced our experience of the actual (unwrapped) gift. Through drawing\, painting\, collage-making\, and clay-molding\, we will explore the visual language of the unconscious\, our personal pacing\, inner resources\, and rituals for honoring what is meaningful to us in such dialogues with the unconscious. Participants’ experiences will be discussed and amplified in terms of Jungian concepts and depth work as applicable to creative projects\, psychotherapy\, and personal growth.  ART MATERIALS  WILL BE PROVIDED BY OFJ.  SPACE IS LIMITED — REGISTER EARLY.

SUMMARY:Exploring the Visual Language of the Unconscious
DESCRIPTION:The realm of psyche is immeasurably great and filled with living reality. -C.G. Jung \nIn her lecture\, Jane Zich will explore the “living reality” of the psyche as evidenced in the visual language of the unconscious that emerges in depth psychotherapy\, dreams\,\nfilms\, and extended active imagination processes. She will use paintings from her Vision Journey series — an image-mediated dialogue with the unconscious that has spanned seven years — to illustrate how recurrent cycles and shifts in imagery suggest a purposefulness in the visual language of the unconscious that can promote and support an “I-Thou” attitude of partnership between ego consciousness and the unconscious. Specific psychological tasks that seem required for specific stages or types of imagery will be described\, as well as impasses that tend to result when those tasks are avoided or incompletely met. Dr. Zich will illustrate the role of  “orienting intentions” in navigating extended dialogues with the unconscious\, and will refer to image stages and related tasks for ego consciousness that can be seen in C.G. Jung’s Red Book\, in cultural contexts\, and in societal impasses. Time for discussion will follow.

SUMMARY:God: Finding a Perspective for Our Time
DESCRIPTION:The role that religion continues to play in today’s secular world is distressing to some and comforting to others. Jung’s notion of a “religious instinct” and his understanding of the “God-image” in the psyche provide a point of entry into the controversy and a fitting perspective for our times. Through viewing film clips\, personal reflection and discussion of the changing God-image\, this workshop aims to equip participants with timely\, intelligent ways to approach prevailing religious questions. It will move toward contemplating a sense of the sacred that is conversant with today’s individual and collective challenges.

SUMMARY:The God Complex
DESCRIPTION:Notions of divinity are psychoactive. Whether one is a believer\, an atheist\, an agnostic\, a spiritual seeker or a student of religion\, it is difficult to contemplate questions of God without significant investment in the answers. This lecture will discuss the “complex” psychology of our response to the God topic. It will show how a Jungian approach can provide a way to negotiate the associated conundrums and controversies. From contemplating the death of God to the psychodynamics of fundamentalism and the search for meaning in between\, our goal will be a deeper appreciation of the psychological stakes involved.

SUMMARY:The I Ching: The Imagination of Integrity
DESCRIPTION:Analytical psychology\, with its emphasis on intuitive images\, has frequently recorded the way a particularly arresting inner image can foster healing.   Comparing the psychotherapist’s work to that of the Renaissance alchemist\, similarly engaged in promoting a process of transformation\, Jung was fond of quoting the hermetic maxim\, “For those who have the image\, the passage is easy.”    But how does a patient in psychotherapy “have” the image that has such a transformative effect on personality and behavior?  John Beebe believes the image needs to be “achieved\,” a process that involves heart and mind in submitting to the contours of the image\, allowing it to communicate its pattern to our minds\, which must then translate the image in an authentic way to us so that we come to live inside it.   If we allow ourselves to become shaped by the image\, rather than trying to shape it to our own ends\, it will show us a new way to live.  In this lecture\, Dr. Beebe will draw on insights and images from classical Chinese philosophy\, especially Taoist and Confucian understandings of integrity\, and the Book of Transformations\, the I Ching\, to help us see and feel the dynamic potential of this process.

SUMMARY:Left by the Side of the Road: Individuation and Homecoming
DESCRIPTION:This workshop explores the connection between the psychoid archetype presented in the Friday evening lecture and individuation. Beginning with that beautiful story of the rainmaker that Jung tells in Mysterium Coniunctionis\, we will explore how a radical ecology that puts us in harmony with nature presumes and requires a sense of harmony within oneself. \nFor Jung individuation refers to those moments and occasions in one’s life when one is called to follow the law of one’s own being\, to become the person one was meant to be. Such moments often occur in mid- life\, but they can take place at any moment of important transitions. Anxiety most often accompanies these moments and they are also quite often expressed in dreams and symptoms. Individuation is a crisis but as such it is not only a danger\, it is also an opportunity. Individuation presents each of us with the chance to transform one’s fate into a destiny. \nIn this workshop we will explore Jung’s theme of individuation as a process of homecoming and show how in coming home to oneself one also comes home to the world. Through music\, film\, story and poetry we will create a space of reverie in which we will make use of dream material\, symptoms\, fantasies\, and writing exercises to tap into the creative unconscious in order to begin the work of transforming memory into memoir. Together we will engage in a journey whose steps include slowing down\, learning to linger in the moment and adopting an attitude of hospitality that allows us to be turned back toward and to be addressed by those aspects of ourselves that have been forgotten\, ignored\, abandoned\, left behind or otherwise sacrificed. Along this path we will engage those who wait for us with the unfinished business of our lives. \nThe goal of this workshop is for each participant to begin crafting a narrative of homecoming that arises within a slowness that reaches toward the stillness of a solitude that reaches toward the silence of a sorrow that reaches toward and be-comes serenity.

SUMMARY:Psyche and Nature: Inner Journeys in the Outer World
DESCRIPTION:With his idea of the psychoid archetype Jung explored a level of the unconscious where psyche and nature are  one.  In this lecture\, Dr. Romanyshyn will show  how what we have called the unconscious is at this level the conscious of nature within us. Presenting a DVD he made after returning from a journey he took to the Antarctic in Nov. 2009\, Dr. Romanyshyn will describe how this journey in the outer world began with a journey in the inner world of a dream of more than 30 years ago. He will also suggest in this lecture that the format of the DVD\, which presents 86 images set to music accompanied by a voice over\, deepens a psychology of mind\, where the inner world of psyche and the outer world of nature are separate\, into an aesthetics of the heart\, where the inner and the outer intersect each other. In addition Dr. Romanyshyn will also consider how psychology as an aesthetic response to nature can be the foundation for a radical ecology that attends to the crises of nature as a symptom calling us to re-member the broken connections between the world and us.

SUMMARY:The Tropics of Desire: The Soul’s Expressions of Coniunctio in Dreams and Life
DESCRIPTION: This talk entails a re-imagining of the dynamics of the anima and animus in light of modern arousal studies\, gender identity theory and discourse analysis. \nJung’s theory of the anima and animus was crucial to his crowning works of Mysterium Coniunctionis  and Aion\, and remains a centerpiece of thinking about lived relationship. However the original formulation has been correctly riddled with accusations of anachronism\, gender bias and linguistic naivete.  Because of these difficulties it has been either used unreflectively or abandoned\, not coincidentally in a similar way to modern attitudes toward religion.  This talk re-imagines the deepest path of the animae as they lead to the self – in theory\, in dreams and in lived relationship.
