SUMMARY:Emotion: The Moving Force of Experience
DESCRIPTION:There is no experience without emotion. Our daily lives\, our nightly dreams; our interior realities and outer relationships; our fantasies\, myths\, and religions; our arts and sciences; careers and investments – all are informed by emotion. From ancestral times to the here and now of today\, emotions initiate our actions\, infuse our musings\, and fashion the narratives of our lived and unlived lives. It is essential that we know and recognize our universal survival-enhancing emotions\, and the social emotions of our particular surrounds.

SUMMARY:The Body as Shadow: Listening to the Somatic Unconscious
DESCRIPTION:Jung observed repeatedly that transformation can only take place “if we are in our bodies\, otherwise it is like the wind blowing in the desert.”  The body is often regarded as mechanical and unimportant; although there is now renewed interest in sensori-motor research\, the imaginal\, and the body-psyche connection.  In this experiential workshop\, we will learn to listen to the somatic unconscious through non-directed\, mindful oriented movement.  Movement\, image\, memory and sensation will guide us to a healthy dialogue with the shadow.  Drawing\, writing\, and sharing will help to anchor our experience in consciousness where our truth can be honored and not interpreted. \nNo prior experience with this method is required to participate. Please where comfortable clothes for moving and a pillow or backjack to sit on and your lunch. \nSATURDAY WORKSHOP ATTENDANCE IS LIMITED TO 30 PARTICIPANTS AND SCRIP WILL NOT BE PERMITTED FOR USE.

SUMMARY:Jung\, Spirituality\, and the Body
DESCRIPTION:The individuation process demands that we return to our personal unconscious and our archetypal roots.  Jung invites us to honor and understand archetypal forces that push into consciousness from the somatic unconscious. This lecture will investigate the importance of witnessing and working with archetypal energies when they emerge through embodiment. These experiences are often pathologized\, although they have been experienced\, observed\, and discussed since the beginning of human history.  How can we have a creative relationship with them?

SUMMARY:Slender Threads: Our Connection to the Deeper and Greater Aspect of Being
DESCRIPTION:Slender connecting threads are at work in all our lives\, guiding and shaping us. This program explores the value and process of paying attention to those subtle\, invisible influences (sometimes called fate\, the hand of God\, or unconscious processes) as they appear in dreams\, synchronicities\, relationships\, run-ins\, symptoms\, and physical illness. We will discuss the necessary role of ego in monitoring and filtering the impact of these influences. A mod of Presence will be presented that includes awareness of body\, mind\, heart\, and action.

SUMMARY:Building Conscious Relationships
DESCRIPTION:Individuation\, reaching our fullest potential\, is a natural process for every human being. Like plants\, we blossom and thrive given the right environment. That environment is always some form of relationship – whether with spouses\, family members\, friends\, intimate partners\, or even colleagues. We will consider the changing nature of relationships\, the necessity of conflict\, and how to utilize the difference of the “other” as a sacrament (an outward form of inner grace).

SUMMARY:Hauntings: Dispelling the Ghosts Who Run Our Lives
DESCRIPTION:Our ancestors believed in ghosts\, and perhaps they were not far off the mark as so much of daily life is driven by invisible psychic forces\, archaic agendas\, and imperious admonitions and prohibitions\, all the more powerful because they operate unconsciously.  What are the features of such “hauntings\,” and how might we gain some further foothold on a more conscious conduct of life?

SUMMARY:Eros in Our Lives
DESCRIPTION:We will learn about how Eros shows up in our lives and something about the brain and Eros. We will be encouraged to explore how Eros has driven\, burdened\, frightened\, controlled\, enlivened\, and humbled us. We will reflect on dreams and experiences of Eros\, plus previous or present attractions/crushes\, and will learn what Eros has to teach us as we fall into its grip. How do we move through this energy and glean its gifts that set our souls on fire\, yet not let it destroy us?

SUMMARY:Moral Intelligence in the Family
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Beebe will begin this workshop with a screening of a little-known 1950s American film about a crisis within a family. This film will be the basis for an extended exploration of the need to respond creatively to the dangers and opportunities that arise when an individual’s development creates conflict among his/her innermost circle.  Intelligence is never more moral than when dealing with an intractable impasse with a loved one in the face of one’s own development.

SUMMARY:Moral Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:We will explore the Jungian psychological perspective of psychological maturity and the tools that support our development through the use of moral intelligence. Rather than identifying with one extreme while letting its opposite find expression through the shadow\, psychological maturity allows us to recognize and hold the tension of opposed moral attitudes.  The goal of such strenuous work is to identify which complex has been activated. Tools for exploring the terrain between opposite poles and how to negotiate them with moral sensitivity include dreams\, imagination\, art\, typology\, and the I Ching.

SUMMARY:Psychological Trauma and Listening with the Heart
DESCRIPTION:Participants are invited to bring one or two portraits (photographs\, paintings\, sketches\, or newspaper clippings) that speak to them\, as well as a notebook and pen for personal reflection. Experiencing the relationship between image and affect leads to thought\, curiosity\, and action. This insight will serve as starting point for an in-depth exploration of collective trauma and the paradigm of purposeful action for dealing with trauma. Developing a capacity for curiosity and mutuality (an I-Thou relationship) is not only central for the treatment of psychological trauma but also serves as an antidote to the ills and sclerosis of a fundamentalist mindset\, which is the source of much human suffering.

SUMMARY:Psychological Trauma and Listening with the Heart
DESCRIPTION:In lecture and workshop we will explore how each one of us can contribute to healing the anima mundi\, the soul of the world. After the trauma of World War II and the genocide of the Holocaust\, C.G. Jung asked\, “Is it really only brute force that decides everything?” Over the past seven years I have learned from individuals and communities who are suffering the posttraumatic consequences of war and violence in eastern Congo\, northern Uganda\, South Sudan\, and western Kenya. In essence\, I invite us to explore and appreciate how\, in a rapidly changing world\, paying attention to innate capacities\, such as what Jung calls the transcendent function\, does make a difference. The mythopoetic layers of the psyche and creative activities of the arts function as agents of transformation by overcoming stuckness and pressures to conform. A summons to “purposeful action” can help transcend personal and cultural layers of reference and rekindle the struggle of giving birth to one’s future. In a globally traumatized world\, taking a stand and modeling principled humane behavior through listening with the heart opens paths to building community and creating future.

SUMMARY: Archetypal Cinema: Hillman and Film
DESCRIPTION:Jungian Film Studies is now a major field of inquiry\, demonstrating how archetypal patterns\, symbolism and the individuation process are present to screen stories. The work of James Hillman extends these understandings by ushering us into a deeper sense of visual metaphor\, which becomes the portal into the imagination.\nThrough the use of film clips\, lecture and discussion we will explore the way cinema transports us into the deeper psyche. Indeed\, many films are underworld initiations\, connecting our personal lives with mythic themes at work in the collective psyche.

SUMMARY:Archetypal Images: Reflections on James Hillman and Jungian Thought
DESCRIPTION:James Hillman (1926-2011)\, a fierce critic of mainstream psychology and a challenger of many Jungian assumptions\, was also\, arguably\, the most significant thinker and writer to have taken up Jungian psychology. He wrote over twenty books\, including Pulitzer nominated Revisioning Psychology and the best-selling work\, The Soul’s Code.\nAfter an overview of Hillman’s ideas\, this lecture will focus on his view of images and what he called the “poetic basis of mind.” With illustrations from the arts and culture\, we will discuss Hillman’s use of terms such as “archetypal imagination” and “soul-making.” My intention is to demonstrate the way Hillman’s approach extends and amplifies Jung’s understandings.

SUMMARY:Decline and Ascent: The Paradoxical Passage to Elderhood
DESCRIPTION:Through narratives\, poetry\, and dream analysis\, we will amplify the archetypal forces – both fierce and generative – that shape our experience in the latter half of life.  To promote awareness of the link between loss and spiritual awakening as we pass through time\, Dr. Costello will lead a life-review meditation.  We will consider change as a motive-force in reconnecting us to our roots in nature\, in opening us to mystery\, and in honing our intentions in relation to self\, others\, and our work in the world.

SUMMARY:A Luminous Darkness: Aging and the Spiritual Path
DESCRIPTION:Through life examples\, myth\, and poetry\, this lecture celebrates conscious aging as a spiritual path that traverses the soul’s dark night\, imposes sacrifice and ego-death\, and ultimately renews the spirit.  Challenging the dominant association of aging with images of decline\, Dr. Costello portrays spiritual awakening as an archetypally promoted developmental goal of the aging process. Special attention will be given to the figure of the Sage and to the nature-based tasks of the latter part of life.

SUMMARY:Insights into the Achievement of True Immortality
DESCRIPTION:After watching a short filmed presentation of The Epic of Gilgamesh\, we will discuss the contemporary search for immortality. We will then examine the epic for clues that relate to  King Gilgamesh and his afterlife role as the central figure of a religious organization devoted to learning the secrets of life after death. Along with recognizing the archetypal pattern of the return in dreams\, art\, and religious symbolism\, we will use the epic to help us understand the importance of the relationship between ego and the unconscious as the key to overcoming the fear of death. We will conclude with an exploration of the roots of our own yearning for immortality. Participants are encouraged to share dreams\, images\, and stories about our final goal in life.

SUMMARY:Primal Fears Explored with Humanity’s Oldest Story as Our Guide – The Epic of Gilgamesh
DESCRIPTION:Humanity’s most primal fear is the fear of death.  The desire to escape physical death is a  fundamental fact of human existence.  Recent technological advancements in medicine and robotics have made the ability to live forever a much more tantalizing possibility.   In this lecture and workshop\, we will explore the meaning of this primal fear and fundamental yearning\, using humanity’s oldest story\, The Epic of Gilgamesh\, as our guide. This story from ancient Iraq tells of the exploits of mighty King Gilgamesh whose fear of physical death compelled him to seek out a legendary figure considered to be the only human granted immortality by the gods. Gilgamesh’s exploits reflect enduring truths about our fears and desires and suggest how we can better prepare for life’s ultimate goal. During the Friday lecture\, we will discuss the contemporary search for immortality and sketch the elements of the Gilgamesh story. On Saturday\, we will use lecture and discussion to explore the roots of our own yearning for immortality with the Gilgamesh story as a valuable guide.

SUMMARY:The Chenoo Who Stayed to Dinner: Taming the Monstrous Negative Father Complex
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, we will explore Jung’s theory of complexes.  We will consider how a wounded relationship with a father can affect our inner world and our creativity.  After looking at the two primary ways that a father complex can manifest\, we will explore the persecutory or monstrous complex in greater depth.  The Algonquin fairytale “Nesoowa and the Chenoo” will structure the our exploration\, which will include journaling and reflective exercises.  Excerpts from two films\, a dream sequence that spanned several years of analytic work\, and additional fairytales will also be considered.

SUMMARY:Marrying Mr. Rochester: Charlotte Brontë and the Transformation of the Seductive Negative Father Complex
DESCRIPTION:A negative father complex can undermine our trust of ourselves – as well as the ability to experience ourselves as basically good and competent.  However\, creative engagement with this complex allows us to experience its helpful side.  In this lecture\, we will explore in depth one way that a negative father complex can manifest and how it can be transformed.  This process will be amplified by considering Charlotte Brontë’s life and her novel Jane Eyre\, as well as clinical material\, dreams\, and Grimm’s tale “The Singing\, Springing Lark.”

SUMMARY:Film Screening: My Name was Sabina Spielrein
DESCRIPTION:OFJ will offer a screening of the 2002 film MY NAME WAS SABINA SPIELREIN (in German\, with English subtitles). This event will be held at UNITY CHURCH OF PORTLAND (4525 SE STARK ST.); beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Friday March 22nd. ADMISSION WILL BE FREE FOR ALL — MEMBERS AND NON-MEMBERS. \nMy Name Was Sabina Spielrein is a docudrama which draws extensively upon a recently discovered trove of correspondence between Sabina Spielrein and the founders of depth psychology. An early patient of both Jung and Freud\, Ms. Spielrein was a lifelong seeker. In this film\, her connections to Jung and Freud are explored in the context of her personal struggles as well as the turbulent history of Europe during the first half of the 20th century. Local Jungian analyst Martha Blake will lead a discussion of this film following the screening.

SUMMARY:Transforming Compulsion
DESCRIPTION:The workshop was a deeper exploration of the elements discussed in the lecture. \n…Wherever we are still attached\, we are still possessed; and when we are possessed\, there is one stronger than us who possesses us….  It is not a matter of indifference whether one calls something a ‘mania’ or a ‘god.’  To serve a mania is detestable and undignified\, but to serve a god is full of meaning and promise ….  (C.G. Jung\, CW 13\, § 55.)

SUMMARY:Transforming Compulsion
DESCRIPTION:Compulsions arise organically in the psyche – often in troubling opposition to our conscious intentions.  They can occur as images\, ideas\, emotions\, or actions.  From a Jungian perspective\, compulsions seek to transform us.  Indeed\, compulsions are often intensely disturbing precisely because they arise from attitudes that have become dangerously one-sided; and yet they beckon to us from the drive toward wholeness that animates the psyche.  If the content of a compulsion can be understood symbolically\, it becomes a portal to transformation. \nMr. Stebbins will explore the phenomenology and dynamics of compulsions with the goal of elucidating their transformative potential. (C.G. SUMMARY:The Other Side of Christmas: Incarnation as the Awesome Burden of Opposites
DESCRIPTION:The Incarnation\, at the core of the Christian mythos and message\, can be celebrated joyfully at Christmas as a union of opposites between human and divine\, but one which also ennobles us with the burden of what Jung calls “the divine problem”:  the paradox of divine wrath and love\, destruction and renewal.  As Jung puts it\, “Christ has shown how everybody will be crucified upon his destiny\,” a concept that includes shouldering the opposites in one’s psyche.  At the collective level that cross includes destructive impulses that have become incarnate in the reckless exploitation of the earth for oil and profit.  The threat of global catastrophe from irreversible global warming coexists (paradoxically) with love for the very children and grandchildren who will inherit our planet.
