SUMMARY:Healing Trauma: The Soul in Hell and its Liberation: Reflections on Clinical Depression in Light of Dante's Divine Comedy
DESCRIPTION:Trauma survivors often report that their lives are a “living Hell.” This pathological situation is created by the psyche’s archetypal defenses and their depressive power over what one psychoanalyst called “the lost heart of the self\,” with its desire for love and intimate relationship. Psychotherapy of this condition involves what the medieval theologians called a “Descendit ad Inferos“–a harrowing descent into all the hellish un-remembered pain of the patient’s early life. Dante’s Divine Comedy gives us a beautiful literary example of such a companioned descent\, as Virgil and Dante descend into the nether regions in order to heal the poet’s mid-life depression. Following Dante and his guide down to their confrontation with the “dark Lord” of Hades\, Dr. Kalsched will show in this slide-illustrated lecture how depth psychotherapy in conjunction with affective neuro-science\, and the findings of attachment theory and relational theory all lead toward answers of the central question posed by both the clinical and literary material\, vis. how can the otherwise sealed crypt of Hell be opened and its occupants liberated?

SUMMARY:Healing Trauma: The Lost and Recovered Soul in Depth Psychotherapy
DESCRIPTION:According to C. G. Jung\, the human personality embodies a divine ”spark” or animating essence\, often described as the human soul or spirit. Under normal circumstances\, this core of selfhood incarnates in the individual and evolves into a unique personality through a process of tolerable suffering that Jung called individuation. \nHowever when severe trauma strikes the developing psyche of a child\, this sacred core of the person cannot embody and is split off from the developing personality\, retreating into “God’s world\,” i.e.\, into a deep layer of the unconscious for safe keeping. There it continues to exist as a lost soul in suspended animation under a spell cast by the powers of the psyche’s survival system. \nWith the self thus divided\, the trauma survivor feels “broken” or “unreal” and may even lose sight of the lost parts of the self\, living a joyless\, one-dimensional outer existence concerned more with survival than with true-self living. Clinical depression is often the result. \nIn this weekend’s lecture and workshop\, we will see how Depth Psychotherapy offers the opportunity for renewed contact with the lost core of the self\, and hence for renewed feeling-life\, creativity\, and relatedness. We will also see how the forces of repression resist this healing and are ready to wage a fierce battle for possession of the soul (as seen in Blake's image of the Good and Evil Angels fighting for possession of a child). How this dramatic struggle between life-and anti-life forces comes out in the end often depends on the strength of connection between the analytic partners and whether their relationship can weather the many storms and stresses that threaten to de-rail the therapy venture or end it prematurely. \nIn this slide-illustrated lecture\, Dr. Kalsched will describe a series of dramatic moments in the psychotherapy of trauma survivors where a breakthrough occurred in the client’s access to dissociated feelings. These moments were accompanied by vivid dreams in which a lost or abandoned “child” appeared– often menaced by the psyche’s repressive powers. The speaker will then show the parallels between these dreams and those ancient myths that describe the birth and trials of the archetypal Hero– the one who always carries a dual destiny– part human\, part divine\, and whose ”purpose” is to renew the community.

SUMMARY:The Gods at Play: Archetypal Powers and Patterns in the Arts
DESCRIPTION:As ancient poets and modern depth psychologists have long recognized\, the arts represent an especially vivid expression of the archetypes that inform and inspire the human psyche. The aim of this weekend’s program is to provide a rewarding interplay of instruction and entertainment\, each enhancing and illuminating the other. \nThe capacity to discern archetypes – the cultivation of what James Hillman called an “archetypal eye” – requires not only our thinking but our emotions\, imagination\, aesthetic and moral intuition\, our bodies: our whole being. Because the arts engage all these dimensions of the human sensibility\, these presentations will use representative works of art as windows into the archetypal character of different eras and individuals\, and into the archetypes themselves. \nWe’ll focus especially on major examples from music and comedy. Music provides perhaps the most profound and direct expression of the archetypal psyche\, reaching back to the earliest origins of human culture\, capable of touching the depths of our souls. Comedy is ancient as well: the Trickster\, whether in the individual psyche\, in a tribe or a royal court\, or commenting on a presidential campaign\, is crucial to the self-regulating and regenerative play of the whole. It is the agent of the unconscious\, rebelling against the conventional rulers\, speaking the truth from below. \nOur approach will be facilitated by the combined lenses of depth psychology and archetypal astrology\, which permit an extraordinarily precise focus on the specific archetypal complexes most prominently at work in a given individual\, work of art\, or cultural era.

SUMMARY:The Soul in Anguish: Depth Psychological Approaches to Suffering
DESCRIPTION:Painful states of mind such as hatred\, envy\, alienation\, scapegoating\, cruelty\, and loneliness\, also produce suffering. We will describe some of the developmental sources of these complexes\, their effects on the personality\, and some of the ways in which they may be approached in psychotherapy. We will contrast these states of mind with the psychology and psychodynamics of altruism\, empathy\, compassion\, concern\, care\, consolation\, and pity\, exploring the similarities and differences between these states. Finally we will discuss ways to help the helper\, who may suffer from burnout and compassion fatigue.

SUMMARY:The Soul in Anguish: Depth Psychological Approaches to Suffering
DESCRIPTION:When suffering strikes\, it is helpful to find a framework through which we may understand it. The approach of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) is of limited help\, because there are many normal forms of suffering given the circumstances of a person’s life. Even in the presence of emotional disorder\, people with the same diagnosis suffer in unique ways and require a personalized approach. Traditional religions offer explanations and reasons for suffering\, and we will consider some\, but depth psychology has unique approaches. This lecture will describe some ways to search for meaning in suffering\, and consider it as an experience of liminality and initiation into a new level of consciousness. We will discuss an approach to suffering based on radical acceptance.

SUMMARY:Finding Your Third Phase of Life
DESCRIPTION:Hokusai\, the famous 19th c. Japanese artist said\, “I became an artist\, but nothing I did before the age of seventy was worthy of attention. At seventy-three\, I began to grasp the structures of birds and beasts\, insects and fish\, and of the way plants grow. If I go on trying\, I will surely understand them still better by the time I am eighty-six\, so that by ninety I will have penetrated to their essential nature. At one hundred\, I may well have a positively divine understanding of them\, while at one hundred and ten I will have reached the stage where every dot and every stroke I paint will be alive”. In this spirit\, and continuing the conversation from the Friday lecture\, this workshop will allow participants to explore individual and cultural forms of the Elder and how this relates to one’s own circumstances as well as identify their own source of fears but also passion and life in one’s own aging.

SUMMARY:Individuation after 70
DESCRIPTION:Jung said\, “The first half of life is devoted to forming a healthy ego\, the second half is going inward and letting go of it.” Indeed\, he is well known for his theory of adult development and his work on individuation in the second half of life. With this lecture I would like to propose a third phase of life after the first phase (building up a life structure) and second phase (developing a relationship with the inner world). This third phase is especially relevant now as many of us can expect today to live well past the 20th century life expectancy of 65 years old. I have chosen to talk about individuation after age 70 because I want to change this analytical focus on end of life for older adults as a time of preparation for death and instead talk about life and the new possibilities after 70. This phase is not a further continuation of the second half of life but a distinct third ‘half’; a new phase of individuation with its own distinct purpose.

SUMMARY:Courting Experiences of the Subtle Body
DESCRIPTION:Between the concrete world of matter and the world of spirit resides the realm of imagination and the subtle bodies. Any life crisis\, in which the ego learns it does not have the answers\, can open us to this third realm where healing potential and a redirection of life energy reside. And beyond crisis\, consciousness can also learn to court the subtle body as individuation unfolds. Many healing arts tap this realm of being where the body and psyche can rebalance and find healing. The entire cosmos and we humans participate in the subtle body mysteries. Dr. Marie Louise von Franz wrote before her death that growing the subtle body before one dies is of utmost value to the life of the soul. This lecture will explore what this means in the reality of our daily lives\, and will explore images and experiences of the subtle body in alchemy\, dream\, myth\, poetry and waking life. The aim of the presentation is to help us increasingly recognize and open to experience the dialectic with the subtle body realm present in all life. Attention will also be given to various psyche – body healing arts that tap this realm of being.

SUMMARY:Forging our Individual and National Character
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, we’ll focus more specifically on the analytic processes involved in the transformation of narcissism. We’ll also delve into the evolutionary perspectives that emphasize the progressive development of collective empathy\, cooperation\, and altruism reflecting upon how their enhancement furthers our capacity to access choices with integrity. We’ll hold images from Kiefer as guides into the alchemical world that addresses the enlivening processes of living with the opposites. Into these reflections\, we’ll weave writing exercises\, as well as active imagination in order to explore the active presence of conscience.

SUMMARY:Forging our Individual and National Character: The Images of Anselm Kiefer as a Portal into the Nature of Conscience
DESCRIPTION:Jung offered us a compelling theory about the development of conscience. He suggested that conscience relies not only upon communal mores\, but also upon an inner voice\, upon one’s connection to the archetypal realms. He noted that these realms are often difficult to bear but that with analytic fortitude one could turn towards our shadows\, ultimately forging a psychological wholeness. It was his insistent belief that by doing so\, by turning towards the dark stirrings of the unconscious\, we integrate destructive forces that otherwise remain split off\, fueling injustice\, chaos\, and war. Jungian discourse about the emergence of conscience\, along with clinical knowledge about the transformation of narcissism and the healing power of reconciliation processes\, has further developed the idea that we can indeed forge flexible and strong character structures\, both individually and collectively. These resilient structures\, with conscience at their core\, enable us to maintain a creative relationship to the destructive forces that have the potential to cast such large shadows in our lives. These reflections will be woven into a chronological review of the works of Anselm Kiefer that detail how an integrated conscience may emerge alchemically from the patient practice of nourishing a relationship between the opposites\, individually and collectively.

SUMMARY:The Personal Myth in Turbulent Times
DESCRIPTION:In 1913 Jung asked himself this question: “What is my myth?\,” and realized that he could not answer. Can we? First we have to understand what is meant by myth\, and then what the question itself means. Why we have to even ask this question is still another question. What is the cultural context in which we raise these questions\, and how do our personal journeys intersect with the climate of our time are still other questions. This presentation will raise these questions\, offer putative approaches\, and challenge the participant to a more thoughtful engagement.

SUMMARY:Birth of the Self
DESCRIPTION:How can analysis birth the self? \nWe will explore this question by illuminating ideas about birth. Nascent stirrings of the Self often initiate the labor of analytic work\, which can be influenced by our life stories\, including our birth story. \nBirth is a topic that is pregnant with meaning. It can be a signifier of the un-symbolized\, unimagined\, and un-experienced. It can manifest as a regressive\, developmental experience\, suffused with body or implicit memory. Birth can also act as a symbol or metaphor\, and be expressed as a second birth or rebirth. Finally\, it may emerge in the efflorescence of self-development involving a more related connection to the Self–a precursor to more complete development\, heralding transformations in being and spirit. \nThese ideas come to life through Dr. Marlo’s presentation of an emergent process of birth\, development\, and transformation from over 15 years of analysis with a woman who began analysis dissociated from her self/Self. \nUsing evocative imagery\, session dialogue\, and Dr. Marlo’s inner experience\, this workshop intimately examines what happens behind the consulting room door\, allowing participants to reflect on their experience in analysis and examine the practice of analysis and its transformative potential.

SUMMARY:Psychic Birth and Rebirth through Analysis
DESCRIPTION:“The neurosis is as a rule a pathological\, one-sided development of the personality\, the imperceptible beginnings of which can be traced back almost indefinitely into the earliest years of childhood. Only a very arbitrary judgment can say where the neurosis actually begins. If we were to relegate the determining cause as far back as the patient’s prenatal life\, thus involving the physical and psychic disposition of the parents at the time of conception and pregnancy—a view that seems not at all improbable in certain cases—such an attitude would be more justifiable than the arbitrary selection of a definite point of neurotic origin in the individual life of the patient” (Jung\, CW 16\, 257-258). \n“The whole life of the individual is nothing but the process of giving birth to himself; indeed\, we should be fully born when we die.” Erich Fromm \nBirth and rebirth are powerful themes that can shape a person’s development within analysis at any age and stage of life. They contain timeless and profound archetypal and developmental meanings that stimulate our development and relationship to the Self. This lecture will focus on ideas regarding birth and rebirth\, and their expression in analysis. The ways that analysis can give birth to the self will come to life through imagery\, session dialogue\, and Dr. Marlo’s inner experience in her work with a patient who experienced psychic birth through analysis.

SUMMARY:Individuation\, Impermanence\, Imperfection
DESCRIPTION:Individuation is Carl Jung’s term for finding meaning and purpose in life. How do you know when you are on the right path? Why do big ideas about achievement and enlightenment just get in the way? When can you trust your inner guide and when must you apply discipline and ethics to curb the urgings of unruly instincts? Jung believed we find meaning through the struggle with confounding oppositions\, such as good/evil\, love/hate\, inner/outer. In this workshop we will relate Jungian psychology to the Zen perspective of Wabi-Sabi. We will explore the necessity and beauty of flaws and failings\, of things modest and humble. Lecture\, discussion\, and practical exercises will help cultivate appreciation for what is impermanent\, imperfect\, and unfinished in life. \nSuggested Reading: Wabi-Sabi: for Artists\, Designers\, Poets & Philosophers by Leonard Koren

SUMMARY:Living a Conscious Life
DESCRIPTION:What makes a conscious life? Before becoming conscious\, things just happen. When we challenge habits and patterns that constrain our lives\, we begin to find inner authority; life gains greater choice\, purpose\, and meaning. Even those aspects of experience that we don’t want and would never choose\, can be made meaningful. This lecture explores how to claim inner authority\, navigate change\, loss\, and suffering\, and step into the journey of a lifetime — becoming who you truly are.

SUMMARY:Self-organization\, Emergence and Synchronicity in Analytical Psychology
DESCRIPTION:Many of us have experienced synchronicities without truly having tools to grasp what underlies these events. As an integral part of bringing The Red Book to a close\, Jung formulated the concept of synchronicity. We will reconsider this cosmological principle in the light of a new scientific paradigm. The study of complex adaptive systems\, in particular\, affords a unique opportunity to reassess and revise several of Jung’s key concepts\, including synchronicity\, in line with his own evolving model of the psyche. In this workshop we will review and apply these concepts to experiences of the interactive field in analysis. We will observe self-organizing processes in analysis which lead to experiences of emergence in which what happens goes beyond the sum of the contributions by either analyst or analysand. In this vein\, we will draw upon clinical presentation of the use of empathy\, enactments\, parallel processes and moments of complexity\, including synchronistic occurrences within the context of analysis.

SUMMARY:Synchronicity: Nature & Psyche in an Interconnected Universe
DESCRIPTION:What are the academic and scientific roots of Jung’s psychology? How does his psychology hold up today? Jung’s 1912 Fordham lectures on the “Theory of Psychoanalysis” represent Jung’s growing theoretical differentiation from Freud. Soon after delivering these lectures\, Jung resigned his position at the University of Zurich (in 1914) and did not fully resume academic work until 1933. In between these periods Jung underwent the inner experiences that led to the development of The Red Book. \nExamination and comparison of these two periods reveal a tremendous shift in emphasis on what constituted science for Jung. In this lecture we will look at this shift and how Jung’s experiences leading to The Red Book were integral to this change. The scientific tradition associated with the German Romantic movement is key to understanding Jung’s transition. His rich friendship with Wolfgang Pauli\, as well as the rise of the New Sciences of Field Theory\, also influenced Jung’s model of the psyche and his contributions on Synchronicity. We will explore the resurging interest\, re-valuation\, and further understanding of Jung’s contributions in light of some branches of contemporary science\, especially Complexity Theory with its concept of Emergence\, and epigenetics\, the study of non-DNA transmission of hereditary information\, as a form of somatic\, collective memory.

SUMMARY:The Intelligence of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:In this daylong workshop\, John Beebe will demonstrate how dreams illuminate the unexamined assumptions that shape and limit our conscious attitudes. Illustrating with his own dreams and dreams volunteered by participants\, Dr. Beebe will reveal how Jung’s theory of psychological types is a key to understanding and benefitting from dreams. We will also explore how transpersonal\, cultural aspects of dreams may speak not only to us but also through us. \nThis workshop is suitable for therapists and for individuals who want to break through to a deeper engagement with their dreams.

SUMMARY:Objectivity in Dreams
DESCRIPTION:What kind of intelligence guides our dreams? What is its purpose? Drawing on more than thirty-five years experience helping analytic clients\, Jungian analyst John Beebe will guide us in an exploration of how and why our dreams have an objectivity of vision that we can rarely muster in waking life and how our inborn psychological orientation is both reflected and compensated in the dream world.

SUMMARY:Jungian Psychology and Analysis As Psycho-Spiritual Event\, As Religious Occasion
DESCRIPTION:Three question to be addressed in this lecture/workshop: \nHow is Jungian psychology/analysis sacramental\, what is the liminal territory of its operations? \nHow is Jungian psychology/analysis a safe haven for the irrational\, deep feminine\, and earth centered healing technologies so often banned by metrics profession? \nHow to preserve this legacy psychology and soul craft in this era of corporatist culture and craft; preserve and enhance it for its broader re-discovery in a more enlightened era?

SUMMARY:Jungian Psychology and Analysis As Psycho-Spiritual Event\, As Religious Occasion
DESCRIPTION:“All life is bound to carriers who realize it\, and it is simply inconceivable without them. But every carrier is charged with an individual destiny and destination\, and the experiencing of these alone makes sense of life”.\n– C.G.Jung \nIn recent years there has been a drift in the philosophical envelope of Jungian analysis. It is a significant frame adjustment\, a movement away from seeing analysis as metaphysical craft to experiencing depth therapy as scientific craft\, as empirical enactment. \nThis presentation suggests that the core\, unique aspect of Jungian psychology and analysis in this age of increasing metric profession\, psychology by the numbers\, is its fundamental psycho-spiritual orientation\, its essential anchoring in liminal realms. This multi-media presentation will use film\, art\, and masked clinical example to attempt a contribution toward this rehabilitation of craft\, this re-visioning of Jungian psychology and analytic vocation as religious event\, as sacramental occasion. A brief concluding aside will allude to the growing planetary dimensions of this psychology and craft\, stressing the urgency of reconnecting to the Anima Mundi spirit so wounded at the core of contemporary individual and collective psyche. \nFriday night’s lecture will lay out an overview of the model\, while Saturday’s session will deepen and amplify the material through interactive play with the presented media examples. \n“Whatever spirituality is\, we know from our glimpses along the frontier with the transcendent that it wants to step over into living”.\n– Ann Belford Ulanov

SUMMARY:Exploring Medial Intuition
DESCRIPTION:Laurie Layton Schapira is the author of The Cassandra Complex: Living with Disbelief. The book views the Greek myth of Cassandra as an archetypal image of afflicted medial (mediumistic) intuition and how it has manifested as hysteria during the patriarchal era. Now on the brink of the New Age\, we need to heal this crucial feminine function. \nIn this workshop\, through discussion and experiential exercises\, we will explore the nature of medial intuition.

SUMMARY:Emotion: The Moving Force of Experience
DESCRIPTION:There is no experience without emotion. Our daily lives\, our nightly dreams; our interior realities and outer relationships; our fantasies\, myths\, and religions; our arts and sciences; careers and investments – all are informed by emotion. From ancestral times to the here and now of today\, emotions initiate our actions\, infuse our musings\, and fashion the narratives of our lived and unlived lives. It is essential that we know and recognize our universal survival-enhancing emotions\, and the social emotions of our particular surrounds.
