SUMMARY:Ambassadors of the Galaxy: Uranus\, Neptune and Pluto
DESCRIPTION:The three ‘classical’ modern planets—Uranus\, Neptune\, and Pluto\, discovered by telescope in the 18th\, 19th\, and 20th centuries respectively—are each associated with archetypal principles and powers of fundamental importance for understanding human life. Called by Dane Rudhyar “ambassadors of the galaxy\,” they are especially essential for understanding both the underlying dynamics of the collective psyche\, as visible in cultural and historical events and trends\, and the deeper psychological and spiritual dimensions of our individual lives. In today’s workshop\, Richard and Becca Tarnas will share their insights into these powerful archetypal principles informing both our collective evolution and our personal journeys of individuation. Numerous examples from history and the arts will be presented. \n

SUMMARY:The Inner Cosmos Meets the Outer Cosmos
DESCRIPTION:Jung began to examine astrology as early as 1911\, when he mentioned his inquiries in a letter to Freud. That interest gradually developed into a major focus of investigation\, and in his later years Jung devoted himself with considerable passion to astrological research. “Astrology\,” he stated\, “represents the sum of all the psychological knowledge of antiquity.” Insights from these studies influenced many of his most significant theoretical formulations in the final\, extraordinarily fruitful phase of his life’s work\, including archetypal theory\, synchronicity\, and the philosophy of history. Since his death\, reports from his family and others close to him revealed that in his last decades Jung came to employ the analysis of birth charts and transits as a regular and integral aspect of his clinical work with patients. \nIn this evening’s lecture\, Richard and Becca Tarnas will discuss the transformation of 20th-century astrology under the impact of Jung’s work\, the importance of archetypes and the concept of synchronicity to astrological understanding\, and the larger implications of evidence for the systematic correlation of planetary movements with the archetypal dynamics of the human psyche. They will also present a concise\, nuanced description of each of the great archetypal principles associated with the Sun\, Moon\, and planets\, and the extraordinary mutual enrichment that depth psychology and archetypal astrology provide for each other.

SUMMARY:A Psychological Exploration of Tattoos and Graffiti
DESCRIPTION:This talk will explore the tattoo and graffiti writers’ art from a Jungian psychological perspective. It is the presenter’s hypothesis that the topics under investigation exemplify areas of life where the unconscious can be seen to manifest. Whether one enters the confines of a tattoo shop with its array of imagery on the wall\, or walks down the back alleys of some city taking in the graffiti tags\, throw-ups or wild style pieces left behind in the night by the graffiti writers’\, it is the presenter’s impression that each topic has something to do with the depths of the human psyche\, the collective unconscious\, with its archetypal foundation. Images of tattoos and graffiti writers art will be presented for discussion and interpretation.

SUMMARY:Why is Consciousness such a Challenge for Humanity?
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop we explore Erich Neumann’s lifelong endeavor— understanding human psychological development from birth to old age – by focusing on the important questions about why we do what we do\, how to change those patterns\, and how change impacts humans’ relationship to the greater Self\, and to “God”. It was Erich Neumann who came up with the concept of the ego-Self axis. Neumann was personally challenged to try to understand the world during WWII and why the psychology of his time changed so radically\, just as it has for us today. He explored the process of normal and changing development through his books\, The Origins and History of Consciousness\, The Great Mother\, Psychology and the New Ethic\, and his more recently published books\, The Roots of Jewish Consciousness: Revelation and Apocalypse; and Hasidism. Neumann’s seminal ideas provide us food for understanding and discussion. We also discuss what happens when the process goes wrong\, as explained in his papers on “Narcissism” and “Mass Man.” Finally we discuss Neumann’s interest in the uniqueness of the “creative individual” and the “nature of creativity itself” through which potent and transformative images and symbols emerge to impact the individual and the greater collective. These ideas will be grounded through examples of artists and their art in a PowerPoint presentation.

SUMMARY:The Wisdom of Erich Neumann for our Troubled World
DESCRIPTION:Who was Erich Neumann\, one of Jung’s closest friends\, though 30 years younger than Jung? How do Neumann’s life experiences spanning the Holocaust and World War II echo much of the chaos and evil we are experiencing today? Neumann escaped Berlin in 1933 for Palestine\, where he produced a large body of work focused on Judaism\, consciousness\, creativity\, and evil. After we are introduced to this brilliant Jungian\, we will explore his own inner process of transformation as seen through his active imagination watercolor paintings. \n

SUMMARY:The Wizard of Oz: The Problem of Power and Innocence in the Struggle for Wholeness
DESCRIPTION:Oregon Friends of Jung\, in partnership with the Pacific Northwest Society of Jungian Analysts (PNSJA)\, continues our series of seminars designed to deepen your knowledge of Jungian psychology. You will have an opportunity to learn from and engage with analysts who are experts in their fields. \nBeginning in October\, appropriate to the season of the witch\, analyst Diana Oxley will lead seminar participants in an extensive exploration of the story of the Wizard of Oz and its key figures\, the wizard and evil witches who pose obstacles to Dorothy’s journey to return to the ones she loves. According to Jung\, a journey such as this leads to “the supreme realization of the innate idiosyncrasy of a living being. … an act of high courage flung in the face of life.” (1953\, CW 17\, ¶289). Using a fairy tale of modern vintage\, participants will grapple with the timeless archetypal forces that make the story so compelling and with the power to leave an indelible mark on our psyches. \nPresenter: Diana Oxley\, Ph.D.\, LPC\, received her diploma in Jungian psychotherapy from the C.G. Jung Institute\, Zurich in 2019 and has been in practice since 2015. \nAccording to the Library of Congress\, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is America’s greatest and best-loved home-grown fairytale. Written in 1900 and made into a movie in 1939 with spin-offs The Wiz and Wicked\, it remains ever popular. As Jungians we suspect its enduring popularity is due to the archetypal wisdom it contains. A young girl\, meek and mild\, goes up against a powerful wizard and evil witch. How she is able to transform and integrate these unconscious elements reveals deep insights into the threat that a power complex poses to individuation. Salman Rushdie sees in the film’s theme song “Over the Rainbow” the wish for escape from the inadequacies of one’s present circumstances\, a pretty tidy explanation of our susceptibility to the attraction of power. This human weakness applies to all individuals and also relates to American culture\, its history and complexes as context of our own necessarily idiosyncratic\, often wayward journey toward wholeness. \nMaterials. A few copies of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz are available in our library for participants to borrow. The book is also available to purchase online or at your local bookstore. \nDates and Times\n\nSundays from 1:00—3:00pm PST In-person attendance only – no Zoom\n\n\nSchedule\n\nOctober 12\nOctober 19\nNovember 2\nNovember 16\nNovember 23\n\nLocation\nOFJ Library\, 811 NW 20th Ave\, Portland. SUMMARY:Sugaring the Psyche: Crafting Sweet Narratives from Life's Essence
DESCRIPTION:We begin by identifying personal “Mother Trees”— key stories\, myths\, or figures that have influenced our growth and understanding of the world. Next we tap into a story stream and experience the calling forth of sap in a story by focusing on title\, opening\, characters\, symbols\, and archetypes. We use the alchemical process of “sugaring” as a metaphor for extracting and sharing the wisdom gained into fairy tale translations that can support and inspire others. Rendering insight into action\, we then explore why we need fairy tales now more than ever before\, as we learn how to let a fairy story have its way with us.

SUMMARY:From Sap to Syrup: Distilling Wisdom from the Forest of Fairy Tales
DESCRIPTION:The forest is an ecological wonder of biodiversity and bio-dynamics. The same can be said of psyche. Just as the Mother Tree supports and feeds the forest\, guiding its growth and ensuring its health\, fairy tales serve a similar role in the cultural and psychological ecosystem. They nurture our moral and ethical growth\, connecting us to deeper truths and wisdoms. Fairy tales are like central nodes in the human collective unconscious. They distribute psychological and spiritual nutrients\, fostering a sense of interconnectedness and support among individuals across cultures and generations. In this lecture we tap into this ancient wisdom and savor its sweetness.

SUMMARY:An Alchemical Journey
DESCRIPTION:This workshop explores the paradoxical dimensions of alchemy. Alchemy is an ancient art that recognizes the deep\, subtle interconnectedness between psyche and the material world. Jung realized that our coming to wholeness is mirrored in alchemy and its varied stages of color and transformative processes. I use alchemical images to take us on a journey of transformation\, and explain along the way the psychological dimensions of alchemical processes. We will see how using alchemical images can deepen our experience of the paradoxical dimensions of our everyday world.

SUMMARY:Embracing the Paradoxical Nature of Life
DESCRIPTION:Jung’s view of psyche is rooted in an appreciation of paradoxical opposites and the roles they play in life. He found that creatively embracing life’s ‘inexplicable and paradoxical’ nature leads to wholeness and a more soulful connection to the world. We explore Jung’s work on understanding the paradoxical nature of opposites and how we can apply this understanding to living in balance with ourselves and the world around us. This requires us to engage in ‘transrational’ ways of knowing. We consider dimensions of this type of knowing which expand the purely rational view of psyche. We also explore complementary views on the paradoxical nature of psyche from fields including psychology\, physics\, and neuroscience.

SUMMARY:The Evolution of Jungian Psychology: Opening Wider Vistas
DESCRIPTION:CANCELLED – Due to illness\, Gary Sparks has cancelled his appearance. Anyone who has paid in advance by credit card for the lecture and/or the workshop and/or CEUs will be reimbursed with a credit back to their card. Please send any questions to membership@ofj.org. Thank you for your understanding. Building on the groundwork considered in the Friday Talk\, Saturday’s program will explore Jung’s approach to healing for both the individual on a personal level as well as for societies on a social level. We will briefly canvass his understanding of the archetype and how his concept evolved throughout his life to include the material world in his grasp of the “psychoid” archetype. Particular attention will be paid to the psychoid archetype’s role in synchronicity\, in psychosomatic healing\, in the events of world history\, in healing the apparent conflict between science and religion\, as well as in our technological mania.

Thank you for your understanding. Friday’s presentation and discussion will explore an overview of how Jung’s psychology developed over the course of his lifetime\, from conception to completion\, focusing on his understanding of psychological transformation. We will begin with his personal crisis (1913–1928)\, following the main threads of his creative growth\, through his last mature writing (1951–1954). Grasping the whole of his efforts gives us a broad view that can orient our future learning of his uniqueness. We will accordingly address how Jungian psychology facilitates personal healing.

SUMMARY:Doing Creativity with Dionysus
DESCRIPTION:Working with images\, including digital paintings\, Oregon landscapes\, and alchemy\, we engage Dionysian creativity in re-making being\, use active imagination\, and work our own choice of art. Susan will also introduce Jungian Arts-Based Research as a way of formalizing and communicating what is gained through archetypal and embodied creative practice. As time allows\, we will enter Dionysian theatrical space with help from William Shakespeare.

SUMMARY:Arts of the Imaginal World: Rejuvenation & Psychic Creativity
DESCRIPTION:Creative practice has a rejuvenating effect. We feel more whole\, more insightful and more in touch with our deep psyche. Creativity and art release and focus archetypal energy. C. G. Jung shows how art-making aids psychological individuation. The arts have a long history of materializing the psyche for the collective. A helpful archetype is Dionysus\, that breaker of boundaries\, including those between humans and nature. This god requires collective worship. Dionysian energy dismembers psychic being\, and re-members it as symbols. Doing art follows such a Dionysian process. This lecture proposes that taking Dionysus seriously seeds a third rejuvenation of being\, one where creativity dances between knowing and being. Here art and clinical practice are generative partners. My novels\, the Mary Wandwalker Mysteries\, are my own Dionysian engagement with the world.

SUMMARY:Queering the Path – Working with Images in Psyche through the Lens of a Queer Analytic Attitude
DESCRIPTION:In this experiential day of reflection and group process we will work towards a synthesis of material from Queer Theory and Analytic Psychology and will apply this synthesis to clinical material\, working with fairy tale material from a Queer Energy perspective. In these tales we will encounter images of Jouissance\, Exile\, the Death Drive\, the costs of Kinship Libido\, and the phenomenological necessity of finding an embodied Home. \nSuggested reading before the workshop: \nAnderson\, Hans Christian – The Steadfast Tin Soldier and The Little Mermaid (available online as PDFs) \nChambers\, Angela (1979).  The Bloody Chamber  and The Lady of the House of Love. Available online as PDF and also in her story collection The Bloody Chamber.  New York:  Penguin Books\, 1979. \nWilde\, Oscar (1888).  The Rose and the Nightingale and The Happy Prince – both are available online as PDFs.

SUMMARY:Straying from the Path: An Exploration of the Intersections between Queer Theory and Analytical Psychology
DESCRIPTION:Those who cannot perform normative cultural narratives often find their voices silenced. Queer Theory offers us a new framework for working with old material. To queer an experience is to resist defining it. Queerness may provide a place to stand within oneself while also standing in the energy of an Exile complex that can be embraced as a new path towards individuation. We will explore the connections to be made between Queer Theory and Jungian concepts of Individuation\, Complex Theory\, Weltanschauung\, and Active Imagination.

SUMMARY:The Appeal of the Extraordinary
DESCRIPTION:Jung’s approach to psychology provides techniques to keep individuals in touch with their inner lives\, as well as methods for interpreting the non-rational\, archetypal elements of the unconscious. The workshop explores these techniques and insights that we need now in order to detect and respect the non-rational elements within life that inspire\, intimidate\, confuse\, and ultimately compel us to confront and better understand the intimations of the archaic basis of the mind. We delve into otherworldly beliefs as a way to better understand the origins of archetypal thought patterns\, and consider how these beliefs continue to inspire us through our dreams and extraordinary experiences.

SUMMARY:The Appeal of the Extraordinary
DESCRIPTION:There is a universal human desire to be drawn to extraordinary beliefs and strange phenomena that defy rational means to explain them. C.G. Jung might consider the appeal of the extraordinary as evidence of the influence of archaic or archetypal thought and behavioral patterns inherent in the human psyche which make up humanity’s collective unconscious. The archetypal dimension expresses profoundly significant symbolic and metaphorical concepts that cannot be proven by rational methods such as the concept of God. However\, in many cases\, the desire to embrace extraordinary views and phenomena can have dire consequences\, especially if a person insists upon an extraordinary explanation rather than a rational one to explain certain factual events\, and interprets purely secular causes as imbued with an underlying divine significance. This lecture introduces examples of how the appeal of the extraordinary can enrich our lives and also distort reality.

SUMMARY:Uncertainty: Is It a Gift?
DESCRIPTION:What a disturbing title! Some days we feel foundations we have relied upon are upended; some nights we fear what can we depend on? Can we trust that truth is accessible and real? How will our children manage? Personal and collective problems mix together. What does the psyche say? How do we discern the archetypal power in the midst of personal experience? We will take up gifts psyche offers in the midst of uncertainty by exploring recalling projections\, integrative projections\, locality\, naming\, new forms of communication resulting from placement of the ego and a new way to be liberated from a dogging complex. Psyche responds to uncertainty with creative gestures.

SUMMARY:The Symbolic Life: Is It a Gift?
DESCRIPTION:Two processes go on in us simultaneously from birth till death. The first is a personal process Jung calls individuation where we reach to become all of who we are\, including mistakes\, struggles\, talents\, uniqueness and an example of shared  human patterns Jung calls archetypes. The second process is the psyche’s goal to move us toward finding not our wholeness but our place in the wholeness of reality. When these two processes meet\, symbols get born and grow powerful. We will explore such symbols — their dangers and their gifts.

SUMMARY:Psyche\, Soma\, and the Living Imagination: Working with the Somatic Unconscious and Healing States
DESCRIPTION:We explore the somatic unconscious\, the “subtle body” in theory and practice\, and examine the value of this work for discovering healing states of consciousness where spirit and body are united in a psycho-physical unitary reality. Dreams that point the way through illness to new emergent states of wholeness and healing will be honored. We also investigate responses to trauma in the nervous system that activate fight\, flight\, freeze\, collapse\, and paralysis. We then venture into how we can form neural pathways from co-regulated restorative relationship with the sensing body to create well-being and harmony.

SUMMARY:Psyche\, Soma\, and the Living Imagination: Working with the Somatic Unconscious and Healing States
DESCRIPTION:We explore Jung’s alchemical work with the Imagination to help grow our capacity for healing states of consciousness. Alchemists refer to a state of consciousness\, a stage of inner healing\, as the Unus Mundus\, where splits are healed\, duality ceases and the individual unites with the world soul. We access these states via relationship with the Imagination\, as Jung’s work illuminates. When illness happens\, turning to dreams and the imaginal realms can bring insight\, healing and wisdom. Our inner instincts often express themselves in dreams and seek to realign consciousness with the life force that heals.

SUMMARY:The Kore Archetype in Myth and Psyche
DESCRIPTION:The Kore\, Greek for Virgin\, is a mysterious figure. Youthful and elusive\, the Kore personifies an archetypal state wherein a person becomes one-in-herself. \nIn C.G. Jung’s essay “The Psychological Aspects of the Kore” (1951)\, he makes the astonishing statement that the Kore is a Self-figure for women\, and has a power that is equivalent to that of the Mother. These two rarely discussed ideas have significance for women’s psychology\, and have direct bearing upon the development of feminine consciousness in both women and men. Who is this figure that is accorded such psychological power and significance? \nDrawing from her book The Kore Goddess: A Mythology and Psychology (2021)\, in this lecture Dr. Safron Rossi will draw out the pattern of the Kore through archaic Greek statues and the myths of Persephone\, Artemis and Hestia in order to discern how and where the Kore appears in life and plays a critical role in individuation.

SUMMARY:Archetypes\, Algorithms and AI: Finding the Deeply Human in a Posthuman Age
DESCRIPTION:Describing the backlash to the industrialized way of life in the nineteen sixties and seventies\, Theodore Roszak coined the term “counter-culture.” He argued the essential focus of this movement was the growth of a world-altering technocracy. \nThis workshop will explore the idea that a new counter-culture\, more robust and enduring than its predecessor\, may be arising in response to an even more encompassing post-industrial technocracy. In seminar format\, utilizing writing exercises and group discussion\, we will evaluate compensatory ideas and perspectives generated by our current immersion in the technosphere and consider individual calling and purpose in light of these themes.

SUMMARY:Archetypes\, Algorithms and AI: Finding the Deeply Human in a Posthuman Age
DESCRIPTION:Glen Slater’s new book\, Jung vs. Borg: Finding the Deeply Human in a Posthuman Age\, describes the collision between the archetypal basis of psychological life and the algorithmic architecture of the online world. This collision is not only disrupting our inner ecology in a way that mirrors the disruption of outer ecology\, it is opening the door to the posthuman goal of merging human and artificial intelligence (AI). \nThis lecture will set out critical areas of understanding that help us enter and reflect on this potentially radical turn in human evolution. It will particularly emphasize Jung’s insights into the dissociative and integrative dynamics of the psyche. We will consider how the arc of his psychology not only provides us with ways to comprehend the evident deficits of the digital lifestyle\, it helps us conceptualize processes and values necessary for individual and societal well-being as we make our way forward.
