SUMMARY:The Erotic Psyche: The Conception and Birth of Pleasure
DESCRIPTION:Using the archetypal backdrop of the myth of Eros and Psyche and their daughter Pleasure\, this workshop will continue the focus on the expression and experience of sex in our internal and external realities:  its instinctual\, animal nature\, its desire for life as well as its relation to death; its aggressive play of dominance and submission; its confrontation with collective ideals or values; its insistence on a journey to the Underworld and its conception and birth of Pleasure. \nThe archetypal motifs found in this myth have a personal effect that we can all feel and experience in our lives.  Helpful examples\, film clips\, participant’s experiences and group discussions will help flesh out the vital significance that sex has in our lives.

SUMMARY:Sex: The Flesh and Blood of It
DESCRIPTION:  \nThere is a close association between the sexual instinct and the striving for wholeness. With the exception of religious longing nothing challenges modern man more consciously and personally than sex. \n– C.G. Jung\, CW10\, par. 653 \nJung repeatedly emphasized the role that sexuality plays in the individuation process\, claiming that a disturbed sexuality was at the core of many complexes that hindered a person’s ability to individuate or develop. He also recognized the difficulties of addressing sexual phenomena because it often brings with it forbidding moral dictates and shadow material that can challenge one’s beliefs and ideas about oneself. But avoiding issues of sexuality means that we may be missing the opportunity of inviting and deepening the vital energy it brings for us at any age. \nIn the Jungian community we typically move to interpret the symbolic value of sex and to embrace the spiritual meaning of this instinctual experience. The spiritual aspect is of course an invaluable component\, and yes\, we want to go there. But we may miss or lose the soul’s longing\, pleasure and suffering if we cannot first explore the intensely fulfilling bodily sensations\, passions\, behavior and emotional communications contained in its ageless expression – in our objective reality\, in fantasies and our dreams. \nThis presentation will attempt to open a discussion about the instinctual aspects of sex\, to examine personal and collective attitudes toward sex\, to invite a deeper reflection of everyone’s personal biases and experiences with sex and to increase an understanding of the potential role sexual phenomena plays in individuation. The aim of the presentation and workshop is to address the positive\, pleasurable\, life-giving expressions of sex and not its negative\, destructive\, or abusive experiences.

SUMMARY:Managing and Making Sense of Life-changing Illness\, Accidents\, and Tragedies
DESCRIPTION:We all encounter hassles (the car breaks\, the plumbing leaks\, we catch a cold) on a regular basis and generally manage to cope; however\, catastrophes are beyond our coping skills. Experiences we cannot readily fix or control challenge us in fundamental ways\, indelibly changing our lives\, disrupting identity\, career\, relationships\, meaning\, hope for the future\, our highest god image\, and our personal narratives. Using lecture\, discussion\, and exercises\, we will explore experiences of tragic events (both personal and collective) and ways to provide self-care and assistance to others\, how to be a help rather than a nuisance. This program will present a holistic model of care. Participants will learn supportive theory and research for this topic from related fields and traditions.

SUMMARY:Living in the Fire: The Wisdom of Uncertainty
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be human in a chaotic world? How are we to cope? There are times\, personally and collectively\, in which we fall back into chaotic states: of anger\, fear\, confusion\, ignorance\, meaninglessness. In moments of chaotic breakdown familiar and cherished positions become unraveled. This lecture explores mythic and psychological patterns to help guide us through uncertain times.

SUMMARY:Dreaming in Black and White: Race and the Unconscious
DESCRIPTION:It is through the unconscious that we are most likely to “see” into our personal Shadow. Our connection with others both known and unknown can appear in dream imagery to reveal a deeper understanding of what we truly believe in terms of Collective racial issues\, personal encounters and our connection with Other. We will revisit our dreams through Active Imagination and spend time writing about our dreaming experiences. Please bring a personal journal.

SUMMARY:Exploring Our Jungian Racial Shadow: Brightening the Light
DESCRIPTION:The Eurocentric roots of Jungian Psychology have strengthened in American soil but have remained exclusive in areas of growth. The racialized language pertaining to people of color considered as “Other” has cast a Shadow that continues to affect how we live together psychologically while practicing a Psychology birthed and languaged in homogeneity. This lecture focuses on the historical development of Jungian Psychology and racial othering and supports us being in conversation about racial issues specific to Jungian Psychology while members of a heterogeneous Collective.

SUMMARY:The Alchemical Hunt for the Green Lion
DESCRIPTION:We will review and discuss dreams and texts related to the Green Lion\, and with active imagination and writing exercises\, we will seek to co-create a subtle body field to support healing and discovery. Looking into life stories\, dreams\, film clips and related alchemical images\, such as the Tibetan snow lion roaring over the heart to awaken each seeker individually\, we may find our heart capacities grow.

SUMMARY:The Alchemical Hunt for the Green Lion
DESCRIPTION:Following the tracks of this alchemical mystery of the Green Lion through myths\, ancient texts\, poetry\, and dreams\, we’ll seek that Presence in the psyche which leads into the growth of the subtle body heart. The alchemical Green Lion mysteries start in the “rag and bone shop of the heart” where our awareness grows of the subtle ways we learn to guard the heart and live out of unconscious values and archaic defenses against psyche and life. Our “hunt for the Green Lion” brings us into contact with this green vitalizing force where we may discover our capacity to see these shadow attitudes\, and simultaneously open the heart. Here in the subtle hermetic light between the opposites\, we may uncover a potential growing center between the conscious and the unconscious that helps light and guide our way in life.

SUMMARY:Letting Go and Holding On: The Role of Story in Holding On and Letting Go in Individuation
DESCRIPTION:We will explore the dynamics of Holding On and Letting Go as two aspects of a vital and ever-changing flow of beliefs that keeps life fulfilling. Using experiential techniques\, writing\, and small group sharing we will identify and explore the stories that we live by and how they affect our tendency to constrict or expand. Our process will encourage a bottom up process in which deeper aspects of the psyche can emerge and develop\, rather than a top down process in which the ego controls and limits.

SUMMARY:Letting Go and Holding On: Essential Archetypal Tools for the Journey of Individuation
DESCRIPTION:Jung suggested that in the journey of individuation the ego needs to let go of control and defer to the Self\, submitting to a principle greater than personal identity. Relinquishing old stories of a heroic ego is essential to the individuation process. Yet holding closely the values that bring us joy\, strength and meaning are also essential as we enter new stages of life. This talk will explore the essential role that these deeply embedded tools play in individuation\, from the viewpoint of human development\, Jung’s own life\, scientific research\, and mythology and religion.

SUMMARY:Taking Your Life Back: Steps to the Recovery of a Personal Journey
DESCRIPTION:Tiny\, dependent\, and at the mercy of the world around us\, we all have to adapt\, adjust\, bury\, deny\, split-off and repress\, and thereby lose contact with our own sovereignty and natural source of guidance.   The core project of the second half of life is the recovery of that source.   This program/workshop will focus on twenty-one steps we may take toward the recovery of our personal journey.

SUMMARY:Living Life More Fully in the Shadow of Mortality
DESCRIPTION:Jung observed that “life is a short pause between two mysteries.” That fact is not in  debate; what does matter\, then\, is how we live that short pause. Given that mortality frames our brief journey\, how can we live more fully in its presence without being defined by morbidity\, fear\, and denial? What are the attitudes and practices which enable us to live more fully? And what psychological maturation brings us to experience this short pause as rich with meaning?

SUMMARY:Alchemical Active Imagination
DESCRIPTION:Jung conceived of alchemy as a practice of what he called active imagination\, a meditative practice of transformation in which inner complexes and archetypal constellations are personified or experienced as images and then confronted and related to by the conscious ego. Writing\, painting\, dance\, music and other mediums in addition to unconscious projections onto matter\, can all be used to bring the unconscious to conscious expression. Having gone over the theory and history of alchemy in the presentation\, in this workshop we will learn how to practice active imagination. Practical recipes taken from alchemy will be introduced and we will provide ample time to apply these recipes to our own experience\, not just talking about alchemy but effectively becoming alchemists ourselves. We will also access the way in which Jung saw the value and importance of doing this type of work\, politically and culturally\, as well as individually.

SUMMARY:Alchemy and Jung’s Red Book
DESCRIPTION:All of Jungian psychology as we know it – the story of how Jung became Jung – originates in the Red Book. The Red Book is the story of Jung’s confrontation with the unconscious undertaken over the course of 16 years from 1914 – 1930 and expressed in 400 calligraphic pages of writings and 53 full page color paintings. Central to Jung’s reflections in 1912-13 before he began the Red Book\, was one main question that became the question of all questions: “What is the myth of my life?” To his great surprise Jung discovered that his myth\, the myth of the Red Book\, was the alchemical myth. \n“I had very soon seen that analytical psychology coincided in a most curious way with alchemy. The experiences of the alchemists were\, in a sense\, my experiences\, and their world was my world. This was\, of course\, a momentous discovery.” \nMany alchemists were not literally trying to turn lead into gold\, but were speaking in a language of symbols about the imagination of transformation. This the reason why Jung observed in alchemical texts the same symbols that he experienced in himself and saw in the dreams of his patients. Three of the main themes in alchemy involve the confrontation with the shadow\, the return of the repressed feminine\, and the relationship between psyche and matter. Connecting these themes is the alchemical mysterium coniunctionis or the union of sun and moon\, of the conscious day world with the unconscious night world. In this presentation we will track the original texts and imagery of the alchemists into their reappearance in Jung’s Red Book and\, finally\, reflect on the meaning and value of the alchemical myth for our lives today in the contemporary world. \nView the slides and videos from this event

SUMMARY:Experiential Reflections on the Transcendent Function in Our Lives
DESCRIPTION:Jung’s writings on the transcendent function present multiple\, sometimes seemingly contradictory\, impressions of the transcendent function. In this workshop we will consider how these “contradictions” may reflect the mystery within and around the transcendent function. Excerpts from Jung’s writings about the transcendent function\, as well as material from Friday night’s lecture\, will be used to help awaken our curiosity about and openness to the transcendent function in our lives and in our work as therapists. Drawing and collage exercises will provide visual means for exploring our relationship with the transcendent function. After the exercises\, there will be time for communal sharing of impressions and reflections\, and an opportunity to identify and affirm attitudes or intentions we want to carry forward from the workshop.

SUMMARY:Panther’s Prints: Tracking the Transcendent Function Through Imagery
DESCRIPTION:Panther ©2013 by Jane Zich\nSomething works behind the veil of fantastic images\, whether we give this something a good name or a bad.  It is something real\, and for this reason its manifestations must be taken seriously.  -C.G. Jung \nIn her lecture\, Jane Zich will explore impressions of the transcendent function based on her Vision Journey painting series.  This image-mediated dialogue with the unconscious\, which has spanned twelve years\, was initiated by the arrival of a numinous blue Panther. Panther’s presence not only opened the possibility of an “I-Thou” relationship with imagery\, but also became a symbol of the transcendent function.  Paintings from the Vision Journey series\, and experiences during that painting process\, will be examined as Panther’s metaphorical footprints. We will explore these “tracks” to see what they seem to reveal to us about the transcendent function\, about its course and patterns of movement\, and about the circumstances or psychological terrains in which the transcendent function is apt to become most apparent to us. Applications to clinical contexts will be discussed. \nImage: Panther © 2013 by Jane Zich

SUMMARY:Coyote\, the Great North American Trickster
DESCRIPTION:Claudio Orso-Giacon\, Moonlight & Serenade\, 2016. Woodblock. By permission.\nSee a slideshow of the workshop on Dyane’s Website\nDyane Sherwood will introduce you to Coyote\, who indulges his greedy and lascivious nature and tries to get what he wants through trickery and a disregard for cultural norms. He was a popular figure throughout native peoples in North America\, whose stories used outrageous humor to teach us about the Coyote in ourselves and warn us about the Coyote in others. \nEach person will have the opportunity to use paper clay\, paint\, and other art supplies to make your own Coyote figure. We will make the figures in the morning\, and then paint and decorate them after lunch. You may also wish to write a story of your own about an encounter with Coyote! \nWe will end the day by studying a no-longer practiced Navajo story and healing ritual that takes us more deeply into the evil and harm caused by Coyote when his path leads to addiction\, abuse\, and mental illness. \nNote:  Registration is limited to 30 attendees.

SUMMARY:Living in Harmony with the Natural World: The Lakota World View
DESCRIPTION:Dyane Sherwood will speak about the symbolic and experiential way that the Lakota (“Sioux”) tribe’s ancient spiritual tradition situates the individual within the natural world and within community. We will look at fundamental symbols and rituals\, as well as a story that teaches the value of feminine wisdom. This will be related to the alienation and suffering expressed by many people seeking psychotherapy today\, who have lost their orientation and sense of belonging in the natural world and within a community with shared values. The lecture will be followed by a ritual of drumming as a form of active imagination\, as practiced by the late Donald Sandner. Wear comfortable clothing and bring drums and rattles so we can celebrate together at the end.

SUMMARY:Foreigner: Friend or Foe? Agent Of Change.
DESCRIPTION:In the workshop we will continue circumambulating the topic and attempt to answer some of the questions that arose during the lecture. We will add fairy tales and myths and additional images to help foster increased awareness of the shadowy other and the changes this archetype can bring about. This will be a participatory workshop – where you will engage with either a myth or a fairy tale in order to deeply connect with the ambivalent archetype of the Foreigner within and without\, as friend or foe.

SUMMARY:The Archetype of the Foreigner - Feared or Embraced?
DESCRIPTION:The immigration crisis points to burning humanitarian issues. Foreigners\, walls\, outsiders and disturbing changes are accompanying the powerful emergence of the archetype of the Foreigner in our nation\, as well as globally. How are we to understand the constellation of the foreigner in our midst? To paraphrase C.G. Jung: what we don’t make conscious we will inevitably and tragically meet outside as fate. How does this apply now? \nWe will explore the archetype of the Foreigner on the objective as well as the subjective levels. When do we roll out the welcome mat and when do we bar the doors\, culturally as well as inner-psychically? A wide selection of images will guide us in our exploration of the topic.

SUMMARY:Healing Trauma: The Soul in Hell and its Liberation: Reflections on Clinical Depression in Light of Dante's Divine Comedy
DESCRIPTION:Trauma survivors often report that their lives are a “living Hell.” This pathological situation is created by the psyche’s archetypal defenses and their depressive power over what one psychoanalyst called “the lost heart of the self\,” with its desire for love and intimate relationship. Psychotherapy of this condition involves what the medieval theologians called a “Descendit ad Inferos“–a harrowing descent into all the hellish un-remembered pain of the patient’s early life. Dante’s Divine Comedy gives us a beautiful literary example of such a companioned descent\, as Virgil and Dante descend into the nether regions in order to heal the poet’s mid-life depression. Following Dante and his guide down to their confrontation with the “dark Lord” of Hades\, Dr. Kalsched will show in this slide-illustrated lecture how depth psychotherapy in conjunction with affective neuro-science\, and the findings of attachment theory and relational theory all lead toward answers of the central question posed by both the clinical and literary material\, vis. how can the otherwise sealed crypt of Hell be opened and its occupants liberated?

SUMMARY:Healing Trauma: The Lost and Recovered Soul in Depth Psychotherapy
DESCRIPTION:According to C. G. Jung\, the human personality embodies a divine ”spark” or animating essence\, often described as the human soul or spirit. Under normal circumstances\, this core of selfhood incarnates in the individual and evolves into a unique personality through a process of tolerable suffering that Jung called individuation. \nHowever when severe trauma strikes the developing psyche of a child\, this sacred core of the person cannot embody and is split off from the developing personality\, retreating into “God’s world\,” i.e.\, into a deep layer of the unconscious for safe keeping. There it continues to exist as a lost soul in suspended animation under a spell cast by the powers of the psyche’s survival system. \nWith the self thus divided\, the trauma survivor feels “broken” or “unreal” and may even lose sight of the lost parts of the self\, living a joyless\, one-dimensional outer existence concerned more with survival than with true-self living. Clinical depression is often the result. \nIn this weekend’s lecture and workshop\, we will see how Depth Psychotherapy offers the opportunity for renewed contact with the lost core of the self\, and hence for renewed feeling-life\, creativity\, and relatedness. We will also see how the forces of repression resist this healing and are ready to wage a fierce battle for possession of the soul (as seen in Blake's image of the Good and Evil Angels fighting for possession of a child). How this dramatic struggle between life-and anti-life forces comes out in the end often depends on the strength of connection between the analytic partners and whether their relationship can weather the many storms and stresses that threaten to de-rail the therapy venture or end it prematurely. \nIn this slide-illustrated lecture\, Dr. Kalsched will describe a series of dramatic moments in the psychotherapy of trauma survivors where a breakthrough occurred in the client’s access to dissociated feelings. These moments were accompanied by vivid dreams in which a lost or abandoned “child” appeared– often menaced by the psyche’s repressive powers. The speaker will then show the parallels between these dreams and those ancient myths that describe the birth and trials of the archetypal Hero– the one who always carries a dual destiny– part human\, part divine\, and whose ”purpose” is to renew the community.

SUMMARY:The Gods at Play: Archetypal Powers and Patterns in the Arts
DESCRIPTION:As ancient poets and modern depth psychologists have long recognized\, the arts represent an especially vivid expression of the archetypes that inform and inspire the human psyche. The aim of this weekend’s program is to provide a rewarding interplay of instruction and entertainment\, each enhancing and illuminating the other. \nThe capacity to discern archetypes – the cultivation of what James Hillman called an “archetypal eye” – requires not only our thinking but our emotions\, imagination\, aesthetic and moral intuition\, our bodies: our whole being. Because the arts engage all these dimensions of the human sensibility\, these presentations will use representative works of art as windows into the archetypal character of different eras and individuals\, and into the archetypes themselves. \nWe’ll focus especially on major examples from music and comedy. Music provides perhaps the most profound and direct expression of the archetypal psyche\, reaching back to the earliest origins of human culture\, capable of touching the depths of our souls. Comedy is ancient as well: the Trickster\, whether in the individual psyche\, in a tribe or a royal court\, or commenting on a presidential campaign\, is crucial to the self-regulating and regenerative play of the whole. It is the agent of the unconscious\, rebelling against the conventional rulers\, speaking the truth from below. \nOur approach will be facilitated by the combined lenses of depth psychology and archetypal astrology\, which permit an extraordinarily precise focus on the specific archetypal complexes most prominently at work in a given individual\, work of art\, or cultural era.

SUMMARY:The Soul in Anguish: Depth Psychological Approaches to Suffering
DESCRIPTION:Painful states of mind such as hatred\, envy\, alienation\, scapegoating\, cruelty\, and loneliness\, also produce suffering. We will describe some of the developmental sources of these complexes\, their effects on the personality\, and some of the ways in which they may be approached in psychotherapy. We will contrast these states of mind with the psychology and psychodynamics of altruism\, empathy\, compassion\, concern\, care\, consolation\, and pity\, exploring the similarities and differences between these states. Finally we will discuss ways to help the helper\, who may suffer from burnout and compassion fatigue.

SUMMARY:The Soul in Anguish: Depth Psychological Approaches to Suffering
DESCRIPTION:When suffering strikes\, it is helpful to find a framework through which we may understand it. The approach of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) is of limited help\, because there are many normal forms of suffering given the circumstances of a person’s life. Even in the presence of emotional disorder\, people with the same diagnosis suffer in unique ways and require a personalized approach. Traditional religions offer explanations and reasons for suffering\, and we will consider some\, but depth psychology has unique approaches. This lecture will describe some ways to search for meaning in suffering\, and consider it as an experience of liminality and initiation into a new level of consciousness. We will discuss an approach to suffering based on radical acceptance.

SUMMARY:Finding Your Third Phase of Life
DESCRIPTION:Hokusai\, the famous 19th c. Japanese artist said\, “I became an artist\, but nothing I did before the age of seventy was worthy of attention. At seventy-three\, I began to grasp the structures of birds and beasts\, insects and fish\, and of the way plants grow. If I go on trying\, I will surely understand them still better by the time I am eighty-six\, so that by ninety I will have penetrated to their essential nature. At one hundred\, I may well have a positively divine understanding of them\, while at one hundred and ten I will have reached the stage where every dot and every stroke I paint will be alive”. In this spirit\, and continuing the conversation from the Friday lecture\, this workshop will allow participants to explore individual and cultural forms of the Elder and how this relates to one’s own circumstances as well as identify their own source of fears but also passion and life in one’s own aging.

SUMMARY:Individuation after 70
DESCRIPTION:Jung said\, “The first half of life is devoted to forming a healthy ego\, the second half is going inward and letting go of it.” Indeed\, he is well known for his theory of adult development and his work on individuation in the second half of life. With this lecture I would like to propose a third phase of life after the first phase (building up a life structure) and second phase (developing a relationship with the inner world). This third phase is especially relevant now as many of us can expect today to live well past the 20th century life expectancy of 65 years old. I have chosen to talk about individuation after age 70 because I want to change this analytical focus on end of life for older adults as a time of preparation for death and instead talk about life and the new possibilities after 70. This phase is not a further continuation of the second half of life but a distinct third ‘half’; a new phase of individuation with its own distinct purpose.

SUMMARY:Courting Experiences of the Subtle Body
DESCRIPTION:Between the concrete world of matter and the world of spirit resides the realm of imagination and the subtle bodies. Any life crisis\, in which the ego learns it does not have the answers\, can open us to this third realm where healing potential and a redirection of life energy reside. And beyond crisis\, consciousness can also learn to court the subtle body as individuation unfolds. Many healing arts tap this realm of being where the body and psyche can rebalance and find healing. The entire cosmos and we humans participate in the subtle body mysteries. Dr. Marie Louise von Franz wrote before her death that growing the subtle body before one dies is of utmost value to the life of the soul. This lecture will explore what this means in the reality of our daily lives\, and will explore images and experiences of the subtle body in alchemy\, dream\, myth\, poetry and waking life. The aim of the presentation is to help us increasingly recognize and open to experience the dialectic with the subtle body realm present in all life. Attention will also be given to various psyche – body healing arts that tap this realm of being.
