SUMMARY:Disobedience\, Evil\, Animals and Happily Ever After in Fairy Tales
DESCRIPTION:Fantastic journeys\, heroic deeds and helpful animals are among the archetypal topics we will work and play with during the workshop. Jungian analysts have learned that attending to fairy tales can reconnect us to levels of our psyche where through the transcending function of symbols\, insight\, growth and healing can take place. Fairy tales belong in our inner nursery fostering active involvement with fantasy and creativity. Anyone dealing with the child inside one’s soul or without as parent or professional can enjoy and benefit from this workshop.

SUMMARY:The Healing Power of Fairy Tales
DESCRIPTION:Why fairy tales – Märchen?  When C.G. Jung discovered the archetypal realm of the collective unconscious\, he also found that through the ages myths\, fairy tales and legends provided a “clothing” so to speak for these\, otherwise invisible\, potentially healing psychodynamics. When we listen to fairy tales our soul is invited to journey into lands of horror and violences well as enchanting rescues and romances. The original fairy tales are ever so much more grim and violent than the Walt Disney versions we are familiar with. Fairy tales assure the listener – adult and child alike – that while evil\, danger and violence do exist\, they can be transformed. By entering into the magic of a fairy tale\, our psyche re-connects with the healing potential of the archetypal realm.

SUMMARY:Carl Jung's Red Book: Healing the Chaos
DESCRIPTION:In 1913 Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung embarked on a remarkable inner journey.  Devotedly attending to his dreams and fantasies\, for the next fifteen years Jung exquisitely calligraphed and painted the emotions and images he found within.  This record of his venture was published in 2009 in his superbly illustrated Red Book. \nAs he focused inside\, Jung was immediately inundated with inward scenes of global catastrophe—at a time when Europe spoke only of peace and prosperity.  In less than a year\, beginning in 1914\, the First World War ravaged his continent with a bloodthirst unknown to history.  Observing his heart of hearts\, Jung found vivid symbolic experiences that not only personified his personal psychology\, but also revealed the devastating war’s underlying dynamics. \nThe world now stands dangerously close to annihilating chaos\, both on the domestic and international stage.  In Friday’s lecture and Saturday’s workshop\, we will explore what Jung’s descent taught him about the turmoil orchestrating his epoch’s horror.  Despite the passing of a century\, the clarity of those lessons will guide us through precious insight into the seething cauldron of our own era. \nThis will be a multimedia presentation with plenty of opportunity for questions and discussion.  The presentation does not assume prior familiarity with Jung’s Red Book. \n

SUMMARY:Following a Light Through the Darkness: Working with Symbols - Session 1
DESCRIPTION:This Seminar is Now Full\nPlease Contact us at info@ofj.org if you would like to be put on the waiting list.\nA Winter Seminar with PNSJA Analysts \nPain and suffering\, of whatever degree\, can leave us in the dark\, forcing us to look past conscious problem-solving to the hidden light of symbols for meaning and direction. Jung emphasized the importance of symbols as a spontaneous self-portrayal of the situation in one’s unconscious. Skillfully engaging the symbols that beckon to us just beyond the grasp of everyday consciousness can be essential for developing depth\, meaning\, and direction in our lives. Almost anything can be symbolic. In this seminar we’ll develop skills in experiencing\, associating\, amplifying and reflecting on symbols which arise in our dreams\, forms of active imagination\, drawings\, body symptoms\, day to day encounters\, and in Sandplay. All levels of experience are welcome. \n\nSix 2-hour sessions on Sundays\, beginning February 3 to March 24 (excludes OFJ Program weekend Sundays)\nTime:  1 – 3 pm\nLocation:  OFJ Library:  811 NW 20th Ave. Portland\,  97209\nCost: $195\,  $185 for OFJ members\nLimited to 12 participants\nUp to 12 hours of CEUs available\n\nMark Girard will lead February 3\, February 10\, February 24 \nBonnie McLean will lead March 3\, March 10\, and March 24 \nSuggested Reading \n\nDreams\, C.G. SUMMARY:Mandala as a Path to Healing Our Split with the Sacred Earth
DESCRIPTION:Mandala symbols appear very frequently in moments of psychic disorientation as compensatory ordering factors. \n– C.G. Jung (CW 3\, par. 582) \n  \nJung identified the mandala as an archetypal image of wholeness. In this workshop we explore the manifold forms of mandalas\, West and East\, and how they can help us heal our split with the natural world. Mandalas make the invisible visible and are portals into deep psychic experiences. We discuss how mandalas provide a bridge between the macrocosm and the microcosm\, and how the mandalas provide a lens through which we can view our sacred world. We will learn how we can make mandala practices a part of our everyday lives.

SUMMARY:A Jungian View of Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:  \nNobody can afford to look around and to wait for somebody else to do what he is loath to do himself. But since nobody seems to know what to do\, it might be worthwhile for each of us to ask himself whether by any chance his or her unconscious may know something that will help us. \n– C.G. Jung (CW 18\, par. 599) \n  \nHuman caused climate change has placed life on the planet in a precarious state. It is imperative we address this situation as soon as possible\, for the longer we wait the more we commit future generations to great disruption. Yet there is great resistance to addressing this issue\, especially within the United States. Jungian psychology provides a unique means to understand the problem of climate change for it recognizes the importance of the unconscious in our lives. In this presentation\, I explore how the dynamics of unconscious processes relate to climate change and how these processes provide pathways to addressing the problem. I consider further the current myths that lie at the root of our collective dissociation from Earth. The presentation concludes with a discussion of how to reconnect to the sacredness of Earth\, which is essential to address the issue of climate change.

SUMMARY:Dreaming Animals: Individuation in a Jungian Analysis
DESCRIPTION:By following a series of animal dreams from a profoundly creative woman artist\, we move into and through the individuation process of her eight-year analysis through her dying and conscious death.   Here we find psyche’s deep instruction\, beauty\, and assistance in life’s completion. Epiphany–the direct experience of Deity–came via dreams and in a vision of an animal before her death. This series of dreams illustrates and makes accessible the dignity and depth of Jungian Psychoanalysis. Workshop participants will have an opportunity to work with their own animal dream images.  Please bring drawing materials and journals.

SUMMARY:Dreaming Animals: Individuation in a Jungian Analysis
DESCRIPTION:… the animal is sublime and\, in fact\, represents the “divine” side of the human psyche. You remember that the purpose of the Dionysian mysteries was to bring people back to the animal…the animal within…which then forms a bridge between (her) self and the original primordial man concealed beneath the historical layers of the past… \nFollowing a series of animal dreams from a profoundly creative woman artist; we move into and through the individuation process of her eight-year analysis through her dying and conscious death.   Here we find psyche’s deep instruction\, beauty\, and assistance in life’s completion. Epiphany–the direct experience of Deity–came via dreams and in a vision of an animal before her death. I use this series of dreams as I feel that dignity and depth of Jungian Psychoanalysis are illustrated and accessible. \nThis presentation grew out of my deep interest in nature and appearance of animals in dreams and in the lives of patients over the course of forty years of practice. \nWhat is the meaning and function of animals visiting us in dreams or meeting them by chance? Which animals bring us education\, wisdom\, humor\, terror\, beauty\, and joy? Can we relate to a creature with interest? Who are we afraid? Do we dream or imagine mythical or other beings? How do we treat animals in dreams and in waking life? What is the relationship between our body and instinctual life? What does this tell us about ourselves\, about us as a society and culture?

SUMMARY:The Creative Self: Dreams\, Secrets and Wishes - A Depth Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Our weekend together allows us to go deeply into an experience of  Jungian Dreamwork through Active Imagination.   An important aspect of engaging in dreamwork is the ability and opportunity to express unconscious material that has emerged.  Our work will involve creative expression in the Depth Writing Workshop. This gives us an experience in finding not only a way to re-enter our dreams but to use them as an avenue for discovery and re-discovery of things we may have forgotten\, lost or wish to bring into conscious awareness.  These possibilities include opening ourselves to creativity in a manner that we have only hoped for in the past.  Our ability to mirror Psyche in our dreams and creative process allows for a richness of Self-expression that can fulfill our deepest wishes. \nWe will share our dreams with one another\, and participate in deepening our individual process\, as well as participating in a group process. This will support not only our dreamwork and creativity personal growth but also provides the value of sharing and learning in a group.  This greatly supports the increase of consciousness between ego and the unconscious enhancing a more psychological and soul-filled recognition of a true Creative Self.

SUMMARY:The Shadow of Creativity
DESCRIPTION:When Jung experienced his Anima-Muse in The Red Book he declared himself to be a man of science rather than an artist.  How might we abandon our creative selves in shadow rather than allowing the light of consciousness to reach into the darkness and allow our creativity to emerge?  This emergence may be accompanied by suffering and periods of emotional growth that the ego is unwilling to experience. Yet\, as Jung did\, we see that we must continue our Psyche-led process if we are to have an authentic life.  In our discussion we will share the struggles and lessons of creativity through viewing the creative lives and works of authors as we explore and discuss avenues for developing our own creativity.

SUMMARY:What is Depth Psychology\, and Why It Matters
DESCRIPTION:How does depth psychology differ from other modalities?  How are its premises and methods of use to all of us\, whether in therapy or not?   During this workshop I will explain the three principles: its not about what it’s about; what you see is a compensation for what you don’t see; and\, its all metaphor\, and provide examples of all of these lenses for discovery and interpretation of our mythopoetic psyche.

SUMMARY:In‑Between Times:Something Gone\, Something Not Yet
DESCRIPTION:  \nWandering between two worlds\, one dead\,\nThe other powerless to be born… \n-Matthew Arnold\, 1885 \nAs individuals\, we often find ourselves in in-between times\, somewhere between a world we knew\, and a world that has not yet emerged.  These times are hours of crisis\, disorientation\, loss\, and enormous anxiety.   Similarly cultures\, eras\, civilizations go through in-between times.   Ours is such a moment in history.    How can we recover our bearings\, sustain dignity and integrity when things fall apart?   What abides amid such discontinuity?   Together we will reflect on what we may do to recover a sense of personal autonomy when our roadmap whirls from our grasp and leaves us confounded.

SUMMARY:Active Imagination and the Romantic Poets
DESCRIPTION:In this seminar following the lecture of the same topic\, we will have a chance to explore the topic of active imagination in Romantic poetry\, Jungian psychology\, and other contemporary expressions in depth. The Jungian method of active imagination will be explained\, and the opportunity given to practice it\, if so desired. In addition\, we will have time for questions and discussion concerning the implications of the insights and intuitions of the Romantic poets and philosophers to contemporary debates on religious faith vs. atheism\, and a new relationship between mind and nature emerging today in depth psychology\, physics\, and neurobiology.

SUMMARY:Active Imagination and the Romantic Poets
DESCRIPTION:Through the contemplation of his inward nature\, the art of writing poetry became\, for Wordsworth as for many of the Romantics\, a “dark” and “inscrutable workmanship”\, in which the “discordant elements” operative between the “two consciousness” within himself might “cling together / In one society” and realize “a soul in the process of making itself.” Wordsworth’s experience of poetic composition will be familiar to those in the field of Jungian psychology as active imagination. When Wordsworth imagines his poetry as “spousal verse” announcing a marriage of the human mind “to this goodly universe / In love and holy passion” (Prospectus to the Recluse\, 53-5)\, Romantic active imagination aims at healing the split between psyche and nature. \nFor those interested in a unified vision of mind and nature\, the psychology of creativity\, and the emergence of a new image of God beyond both fundamentalism and materialistic atheism\, there is much to be learned from the Romantic poets and philosophers. This lecture will explore the practice of active imagination in Romantic poetry and Jungian psychology\, and apply insights gleaned from both to contemporary debates on the nature of religion\, politics\, physics\, and neuroscience.

SUMMARY:Finding the Untold Story: Exploring Developmental Trauma Through the Lens of Contemporary Film
DESCRIPTION:When trauma strikes the developing psyche of a child\, a sacred core of the self retreats into the unconscious where it is surrounded by powerful forces that constitute a “system” of defenses.  This Self-Care System and its inner “powers” frequently appears in dreams during the psychotherapy of trauma-survivors.  Dr. Kalsched will tell some clinical stories\, accompanied by the patient’s dreams\, that illustrate these appearances and then illustrate his discussion with clips from several contemporary films.  Among the films from which vignettes will be chosen are Beasts of the Southern Wild\, The Golden Compass\, Birdman\, and Equus. \n

SUMMARY:Finding the Untold Story: Exploring Developmental Trauma Through the Lens of Contemporary Film
DESCRIPTION:According to C. G. Jung\, patients who come to us for healing often have… \n….a story that is not told\, and which as a rule no one knows of.  To my mind\, therapy only really begins after the investigation of that wholly personal story.  It is the patient’s secret\, the rock against which he is shattered.  If I know his secret story\, I have a key to the treatment…but how to gain that knowledge?  In most cases exploration of the conscious material is insufficient.  Sometimes [projective techniques] can open the way\, so can the interpretation of dreams\, or long and patient human contact with the individual (Jung\, 1963:117). \nAnother avenue through which we can “open the way” to our untold stories is through film. Not only do contemporary films give a vivid portrait of the shattering caused by trauma\, but they also point the way towards healing\, and in this way\, set the stage for enhanced personal and clinical understanding.  We might even say that films are themselves part of the solution to the problem of trauma in our time\, aiding in the creation of moving and meaningful stories out of the shattering experiences that otherwise leave us fragmented and lost. \nFriday Evening Film and Discussion:  As It Is In Heaven\, a Swedish film by Kay Pollak\, 2005. \nEarly developmental trauma always involves an injury to the capacity to feel.  And when this happens\, the window to life closes. Overwhelmingly painful feelings that were part of the trauma are dissociated and become part of the untold story that must finally be opened and the original pain re-experienced.   As It Is In Heaven is a moving film about the traumatic closing—and then re-opening–of the protagonists (Daniel’s) capacity to feel.  Through his conscious suffering\, a window to life re-opens.  We will see the film together and discuss its implications for the understanding and healing of trauma.

SUMMARY:Honoring Early Hermes: Shamanic Herdsman\, God of Paths and Open Boundaries
DESCRIPTION:Saturday morning we will explore his functions as open boundary-marker to wonder about the values we need to find for ourselves and those we are meeting in the ever-widening\, contemporary world. In the late morning session\, we will look at Hermes’ functions around which to explore dreams. We can share some of our own that may be dreaming us on to a security beyond collective walls and inevitable longing for tribal identities. Please bring your thoughts\, feelings\, and\, perhaps\, a dream to share. We will have paper and crayons.

SUMMARY:Honoring Early Hermes: Shamanic Herdsman\, God of Paths and Open Boundaries
DESCRIPTION:We are living in a time of heightened border awareness as our old securities of containment and simple divisions of collective tribe and individual ego are forced open by new challenges. Walls don’t work well in the world of internet and drones\, nuclear\, biological\, and informational contaminations\, offshore banking\, and moving populations of refugees. \nIn this fluid\, open and expanding world\, simple divisions don’t work well even in psychology. Beyond the tidy\, binary separation into conscious and unconscious factors\, we have become attuned to the rich plurality of complexes or ‘self-states’ operative in every interchange between people. We are also becoming accustomed to working with the reality of open and interpenetrating borders between our various complexes and their field effects on the neurology and coherence of others in our immediate and global environment. \nSo we are increasingly aware of the impossibility of neat borders and must attend to the multiple effects of subtle neurological pulsations\, of mirror neurons\, hemispheric attunements\, bodily sensations\, emotional flavors and field dynamics that are alive across the threshold between us as we sit in the multi-dimensional flow that is rich but also often fearful. Such open consciousness forces us to levels of complexity and integration that psychologists began to explore more than a century ago. Jung beautifully understood then the values of seeking images for orientation. \nIn our current globalizing crisis\, which stirs anxiety\, I have been gripped by an image that comes from an era where similarly vast\, cultural shifts were underway and managed by figures representing the qualities needed to survive. For me the ancient\, shamanic herdsman\, Hermes\, god of paths and open boundaries\, has become a marker from which to expand towards such complexity. His early stories\, more emotional and cosmic than the ones from Hellenic Greece or medieval alchemy\, shape a presence that can orient consciousness in a world with wide open borders. They also connect to tales of boundary-making from Neolithic\, Northern Europe\, when the Goddess of the vast earth and sky was divided into tribal lands\, and shamanic elders sang the moving clans back to themselves. \nIn the Friday evening talk\, I will present Hermes as an early herdsman and shamanic deity\, showing pictures and telling stories of his origins and qualities\, which are important for our own time. He represents the threshold where energies and forms interweave\, where consciousness rises from and opens back into the fluid matrix of psyche to bring perception of multifaceted order\, creativity\, and healing.

SUMMARY:Connecting with Culture through Psychological Types
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, we’ll look at our cultural attitudes in depth and explore how they impact our lives and relationships.  We’ll also look at the interplay between psychological type and cultural attitudes. \nDr. Beebe will lead us in investigating the implications of the cultural attitudes for therapy.  We’ll also consider whether it is possible or desirable to try to develop the attitudes that we do not naturally prefer and ask whether we should be working in parenting or therapy to foster the development of the cultural attitudes. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Connecting with Culture through Psychological Types
DESCRIPTION:C.G. Jung’s theory of psychological type offers us tremendous insight\, yet people who are identical in type may still approach the world with very different attitudes and assumptions. How we make sense of the world involves emotional investments and intellectual frameworks that tie to\, but also go beyond\, type. \nJoseph Henderson\, a co-author\, with Jung\, of Man and His Symbols\, worked on this problem in his book\, Cultural Attitudes in Psychological Perspective. Henderson observed that different people apply different cultural values as they engage with the world around them. He called these the social attitude\, the religious attitude\, the philosophical attitude\, the aesthetic attitude\, and\, a relative latecomer\, the psychological attitude. \nUsing illustrative clips from recent and classic films\, John Beebe will lead us in exploring these orientations toward what is offered already by our culture. Participants will take away a new way of observing and understanding themselves and others.
