SUMMARY:Featured Streaming Lecture – July 2020
DESCRIPTION:This spring and summer we’ll be sharing with you a monthly selection from OFJ’s 45+ year collection of our past programs. We hope you’ll find them timely and resonant. \nSamuel Kimbles – Between the World and Me: Where the Wild Things Live \nlecture given November 8\, 2019 \n \nOur historical moment has us unconsciously living out the reality of a split between the psyche (personal) and the sociopolitical world. We locate emotional suffering in the individual and his/her immediate relationships\, dismissing social context to a ‘mere’ backdrop and diminishing its major contribution to our psychological health. With such a perspective we lose the opportunity to create and use the potential space in cultural life for engaging and processing the most pressing problems of our times: racism\, sexism\, gender\, poverty\, class social justice\, and the traumatogenic environment of uncertainty\, pain and suffering they create for all of us. \nIn this talk Sam Kimbles addresses a way of thinking and working with the kinds of issues that cut across the artificial divide between inner and outer. Two stories from literature serve as his springboards for this evening’s talk:  Maurice Sendak\, Where the Wild things Are; and Ta-Nehisi Coates\, Between the World and Me. He uses these texts to look at destructive attitudes in our culture that reflect issues that challenge us all. SUMMARY:Special Program: Bone: Dying into life
DESCRIPTION:Marion Woodman is renowned as a chronicler of women’s experience. In her latest work\, she combines her trademark insight with a personal lesson in wisdom and strength. On November 7\, 1993\, Marion Woodman was diagnosed with uterine cancer. Bone is the story\, told in journal form\, of her illness and healing and the journey to transforming herself. \nMore than a meditation on illness\, Bone offers insights into healing and the role of art and poetry in the soul’s journey toward balance and wholeness. Woodman is extraordinarily honest about the factors she feels led her down the path to cancer\, physically and spiritually\, over the course of her early life. She also details the harrowing aspects of her journey and how she ultimately returned to health. Filled with art\, line drawings\, quotations from Rumi\, Emily Dickinson\, William Blake and others\, Bone is a unique and sensitive testament to the human spirit and to the courage of this extraordinary woman.

SUMMARY:The Splendors of Ancient Egypt
DESCRIPTION:In the beauty and grace of their art\, the ancient Egyptians created images which expressed some of the simple truths about the well-lived life and the most profound hopes about an ongoing life after death. The objects of their daily routines\, their animals\, and their gods were imagined and approached as vital representations of the wonders and mysteries of a meaningful existence. Through understanding the Egyptian sensibility\, we come to appreciate their world and our own. \nWe are pleased to co-sponsor this special lecture with the Portland Art Museum\, as part of our mission to present a Jungian perspective to the wider community. We invite you to support this effort by attending the Sunday lecture\, which will complement the Friday and Saturday programs and the Portland Art Museum’s special exhibit: The Splendors of Ancient Egypt.

SUMMARY:The Soul’s Code: In Search of Character and Calling
DESCRIPTION:The Soul’s Code\, James Hillman’s best-selling book\, sets out a new theory based on an old idea: Plato’s understanding that the soul of each of us is given a unique daimon before we are born\, and it has selected and image or pattern that we live on earth. Hillman’s acorn theory is about calling\, about character\, about innate image. To uncover our unique\, innate image he urges us to set aside the psychological frames that are usually used and mostly used up. They do not reveal enough. Instead\, the acorn theory dares us to envision biography in terms of beauty\, mystery and myth. It challenges the prevalent paradigm that reduces biography to genetics and environment. It lifts the pall of victim mentality and posits a psychology of childhood that embraces pathology as well as imagination. In this evening’s lecture\, Dr. Hillman will read from The Soul’s Code and expand upon his acorn theory.

SUMMARY:The Re-Enchantment of Everyday Life
DESCRIPTION:Enchantment is the condition of being entranced\, caught in rapture\, spirited away\, spellbound\, and living more from deep imagination than from practicality. The soul has an unforgiving need for this kind of enchantment\, and yet the modern world does everything it can to break the spell. Enchantment offers a reason for being\, as basis for ecological responsibility\, and a means for nourishing the soul. Yet\, the modern preference is for understanding and control\, information and manipulation. \nThis lecture by Thomas Moore represents a further development of his work with the soul\, but here the emphasis is on the world in which we live-the rivers\, roads\, buildings\, houses\, gardens\, silence\, music\, ruins\, stories\, art\, language\, shrines\, sports\, graffiti\, and food. It argues in favor of “natural religion\,” piety rooted in nature as the basis of all religious and psychological values. It attempts to restore magic to its proper place in the dynamics of a soul-centered life\, and recommends a radical alternative to the rationalistic and mechanistic philosophies of our age.

SUMMARY:The Holy\, Divine Child
DESCRIPTION:The universal\, religious stirrings that originate in the depths of the human psyche often emerge in the form of the holy\, divine child. Whether or not a person is of Christian background\, this powerful motif flows through the dream imagery of modern men and women. The symbol of the holy child points to hope\, new goals\, and religious meaning. Case material and drawings generated during analysis will be presented and discussed in order to better understand the importance of this symbol in the psychic depths of us all.

SUMMARY:Care of the Soul
DESCRIPTION:The great malady of the twentieth century is loss of soul. When soul is neglected\, it doesn’t just go away; it appears symptomatically in obsessions\, addictions\, violence\, and loss of meaning. Our temptation is to isolate these symptoms or to try to eradicate them one by one; but the root problem is that we have lost our wisdom about soul\, even our interest in it. \nCare of the soul is not solving the puzzle of life; quite the opposite\, it is an appreciation of the paradoxical mysteries that blend light and darkness into the grandeur of what human life and culture can be. Dr. Moore’s lecture will focus on concrete ways of fostering soulfulness in our ordinary everyday lives and in our relationships.

SUMMARY:A 3-Day Workshop: Going on a Quest: Opening to the Creative Day 3
DESCRIPTION:There is a center in us which\, if we could but open to it\, would give us strength\, wisdom\, and the capacity to live our creative potential. Connection with this center gives our lives presence and vitality. Creativity depends on it. Like most real truths\, this potential is hidden: the “treasure hard to attain”. There are tools for contacting and remaining open to it. \nThis workshop uses the creative arts and body movements as an opener to the depths of the psyche\, to what Jung calls “the Self”. It is an opportunity to play with color and shape. No previous knowledge or art skills are necessary-only a longing for a deeper understanding\, a joy in color and a wish to play again. \nParticipants should write their own stories-as if your life were a personal myth or fairy tale-and bring them to the workshop. What are you in search of? Where are you on your pilgrimage? Where do you think you will be at the end? Please also reflect on your favorite fairy tale as a child and your current favorite. This material will be enhanced by the revelations that will arise during the weekend. Bodywork will be coordinated with collage work. Collage materials will be provided.

SUMMARY:Portland Jungians Performance Through Art\, Poetry\, Dance\, Mime and Music: Playing in the Dark: The Shadows in Our Lives
DESCRIPTION:This revue-style event features the talents of Jungians in the Portland area expressing some of their experiences of the Shadow through art\, poetry\, drama\, dance\, mime\, and music. Moving in circles through the humorous to the tragic\, we pay artistic tribute to one of Jung’s most significant assertions-that the Shadow\, which embodies the entire range of archetypes\, is a daily part of our lives. Unrecognized\, it is the source of our misery and destructiveness. Acknowledged\, it becomes our daemon\, guiding us to new creativity and understanding as we grapple with the richness and frustration of our inherently contradictory natures.

SUMMARY:The Inner Journey: Guided Imagery and Music
DESCRIPTION:Music can reach into the very core of ourselves and resonate with it. It facilitates the freeing of the imagination\, the phenomenon of the inner world. In coming to experience this inner world\, we obtain access to our visions and inspirations. Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) is a transformative process which involves listening to classical music in a relaxed state to facilitate self-understanding\, healing and growth\, recall forgotten memories\, provoke adventures\, stimulate creativity\, and often provide spiritual insight. Come prepared to explore the mysteries of your internal image world as evoked by music. Bring a box of oil pastels and a blanket or sleeping bag to lie on.

SUMMARY:In Honor of Naming
DESCRIPTION:There is a Navaho saying\, “to name something is to become”. It speaks of a longing and the possibility for each of us to be fully who we are. It speaks of a relationship to creation and to creator. It speaks of the need to be remembered in a very deep and mysterious way. \nTogether we will explore naming though dialoguing with a variety of texts\, journaling\, use of myth and fairy tale\, movement and ritual.
