SUMMARY:Wisdom of the Ages: Dummling and Elder Tales
DESCRIPTION:The first half of this seminar will explore the symbolism of the fairy hero known as the dummling (simpleton). He is characterized by disarming\, ego-subversive inner qualities of naivete\, innocence and humility\, and is possessed with “an integrity of the personality” that Marie-Louise von Franz deemed an aspect of the Self and “the essence of Jungian psychology.” Through his willingness to suffer the unknown\, the dummling offers a link to our healing\, wonderment and creativity. This is a capacity that exists in each of us. In the seminar\, we will examine the dummling’s significance in fairy tales\, and his importance to Jungian psychology as a whole. The value of feeling-based intelligence will be primary over thought-based interpretation in accordance with the dummling spirit. \n“Being old is highly unpopular\,” noted Jung. And yet\, elders in ancient tales\, from ordinary characters confronting poverty\, failure\, and loss\, to extraordinary wizards and crones\, beckon us into larger relationship with our own aging selves. In the second part of the seminar we will explore elder characters in timeless tales\, including the Italian fairy tale Shining Fish and the Apache folktale The Old Woman Weaves the World. We will also consider how the dummling and the elder might be related. \nBrief readings\, including the folk/fairy tale texts\, will be provided before each session. \n\n\n\n\nJerry Deckelbaum\, LCSW is an Oregon licensed clinical social worker and a member of the Pacific Northwest Society of Jungian Analysts. He received his diploma from the C.G. Jung Institute Pacific Northwest in 2017\, and has additional degrees in music and law. He has a private practice in Portland\, Oregon. jdeckelbaum@hevanet.com.\n\n\n\nMaribeth Kallemeyn\, Ph.D.\, is a Jungian analyst and clinical psychologist in private practice in Salem\, Oregon. SUMMARY:The Wizard of Oz: The Problem of Power and Innocence in the Struggle for Wholeness
DESCRIPTION:Oregon Friends of Jung\, in partnership with the Pacific Northwest Society of Jungian Analysts (PNSJA)\, continues our series of seminars designed to deepen your knowledge of Jungian psychology. You will have an opportunity to learn from and engage with analysts who are experts in their fields. \nBeginning in October\, appropriate to the season of the witch\, analyst Diana Oxley will lead seminar participants in an extensive exploration of the story of the Wizard of Oz and its key figures\, the wizard and evil witches who pose obstacles to Dorothy’s journey to return to the ones she loves. According to Jung\, a journey such as this leads to “the supreme realization of the innate idiosyncrasy of a living being. … an act of high courage flung in the face of life.” (1953\, CW 17\, ¶289). Using a fairy tale of modern vintage\, participants will grapple with the timeless archetypal forces that make the story so compelling and with the power to leave an indelible mark on our psyches. \nPresenter: Diana Oxley\, Ph.D.\, LPC\, received her diploma in Jungian psychotherapy from the C.G. Jung Institute\, Zurich in 2019 and has been in practice since 2015. \nAccording to the Library of Congress\, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is America’s greatest and best-loved home-grown fairytale. Written in 1900 and made into a movie in 1939 with spin-offs The Wiz and Wicked\, it remains ever popular. As Jungians we suspect its enduring popularity is due to the archetypal wisdom it contains. A young girl\, meek and mild\, goes up against a powerful wizard and evil witch. How she is able to transform and integrate these unconscious elements reveals deep insights into the threat that a power complex poses to individuation. Salman Rushdie sees in the film’s theme song “Over the Rainbow” the wish for escape from the inadequacies of one’s present circumstances\, a pretty tidy explanation of our susceptibility to the attraction of power. This human weakness applies to all individuals and also relates to American culture\, its history and complexes as context of our own necessarily idiosyncratic\, often wayward journey toward wholeness. \nMaterials. A few copies of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz are available in our library for participants to borrow. The book is also available to purchase online or at your local bookstore. \nDates and Times\n\nSundays from 1:00—3:00pm PST In-person attendance only – no Zoom\n\n\nSchedule\n\nOctober 12\nOctober 19\nNovember 2\nNovember 16\nNovember 23\n\nLocation\nOFJ Library\, 811 NW 20th Ave\, Portland. SUMMARY:Doorways of Initiation
DESCRIPTION:Oregon Friends of Jung\, in partnership with The Pacific Northwest Society of Jungian Analysts (PNSJA)\, continues our series of seminars designed to deepen your knowledge of Jungian psychology. You’ll have an opportunity to learn from and engage with Analysts who are experts in their fields. \nThe process of individuation leads us through a series of initiations throughout our lifetime. Initiations urge—and sometimes thrust—us into transitional terrain where we find ourselves disconnected from the familiar\, compelled to confront unknown forces\, and invited to discover the new. In this seminar\, we will explore potential doorways of initiation. These include inner energies\, at times forbidden\, which well up and press toward growth; bodily illness; and collective events like the pandemic. Through presentation\, discussion and engagement with fairy tales and dreams\, we will explore how we might consent to the initiations that arrive and serve our becoming more of who we are. \nDates and Times\n\nSundays from 1:00—3:00pm PST via Zoom Meeting\n\nSchedule\n\nJanuary 28 – Maribeth Kallemeyn\nFebruary 4  – Maribeth Kallemeyn\nFebruary 11 – Maribeth Kallemeyn\nFebruary 25 – Kristin Funk\nMarch 3 – Kristin Funk\nMarch 10 – Kristin Funk\n\nCost\n\n12 hours of instruction: $205 (OFJ members: $195)\nSorry\, we are unable to offer refunds.\nContinuing Education Credits are available from PNSJA\, with one hour of CE credit for each hour of attendance. SUMMARY:Reclaiming the Wisdom of Ancient Myths
DESCRIPTION:C.G. Jung’s revelation of the mythopoetic dimension of the human psyche\, i.e.\, its story-making structure\, gave credence to his hypothesis of the collective unconscious\, its archetypal images and their healing intent. In this seminar\, we explore the wisdom hidden in the ancient Greek myths of Myrrha and the great god Pan. Together\, we will discover the meanings and guidance these age-old stories can offer us today. \nIn the myth of Myrrha\, we examine the theme of incest as perpetrated by a daughter with her father. We find that a repugnant act such as this appears in biblical stories\, as well\, and ask why the usual form of incest — a father’s violation of his daughter — gets turned on its head in these tales. We see the archetypes of the collective unconscious\, the gods and goddesses\, having their way with us but don’t understand why we should suffer so. We learn what it means to violate the gods’ sacred principles. and\, if we take the lesson to heart\, are chastened by it. We explore the relevance of these ancient stories to modern life by looking at their reflections in the troubled lives of clients in psychotherapy and characters in film to recognize the many variations on the theme of incest. \nWith the myth of the great god Pan\, we will look into this god’s creation\, not only as a symbolic example of the expression of psyche’s unconscious drama and its inner processes\, but also as a means by which the ancients\, and now ourselves\, make sense of the world. We explore the classical beginnings of this beloved pastoral god as religious myth\, and then the ways secular motifs and energies of the myth live on in modern society. We look at Jung’s views of myth for the second half of life\, and we will explore ideas about our own personal myths as a means of interpreting the past\, looking at the present and finding guidance and inspiration for the future. \nDates and Times\n\nSundays from 1:00 – 3:00 pm\n\nSchedule\n\nFebruary 12 – Diana Oxley\nFebruary  26 – Diana Oxley\nMarch 5 – Diana Oxley\nMarch 26 – Carol Walnum\nApril 2 – Carol Walnum\nApril 9 – Carol Walnum\n\nCost\n\n12 hours of instruction: $205 (OFJ members: $195)\nSorry\, we are unable to offer refunds.\nContinuing Education Credits are available\, with one hour of CE credit for each hour of attendance. SUMMARY:Finding the Self in Relationship: Intrapsychic and Interpersonal Paths to Psychic Development
DESCRIPTION:The Self is one of Jung’s most important and original ideas.  It represents the divine within every individual\, and also serves as the primary driver of the individuation process.  It invites\, nudges\, and challenges us to become more.  The Self is a somewhat elusive concept\, and elusive as a psychological presence as well.  As a concept\, the Self is an idea\, a theory.  In a lived life\, it is an encounter\, an encounter with energies that may be large or small\, penetrating or soft\, beckoning us to the edge of the known and the unknown.   It is on that edge of the known and the unknown that psychic development occurs.  In short\, the Self appears in the relationship between ego and ‘other’. \nFor Jung\, that ‘other’ includes relationships in the world\, with people we love and struggle with in everyday life\, and with other kindred spirits\, as well as relationships with one’s inner life\, with the unconscious.  This seminar will explore ways in which the developmental energies of the Self arise in both forms of relationship.  We will consider the ego’s possible tasks and stance in these encounters\, that is\, how we might participate creatively with the  ‘other’ in becoming more of who we are. \nDates and Times\n\nSundays from 1:00 – 3:00 pm\n\nSchedule\n\nOctober 2\, 2022 – Dunbar Carpenter\nOctober 9 – Dunbar Carpenter\nOctober 16 – Dunbar Carpenter\nOctober 30 – Maribeth Kallemeyn\nNovember 6 – Maribeth Kallemeyn\nNovember 20 – Maribeth Kallemeyn\n\nCost\n\n12 hours of instruction: $205 (OFJ members: $195)\nSorry\, we are unable to offer refunds.\nContinuing Education Credits are available\, with one hour of CE credit for each hour of attendance. SUMMARY:Psyche’s Stories: Wisdom from the Depths for the Spirit of the Times
DESCRIPTION:Oregon Friends of Jung\, in partnership with The Pacific Northwest Society of Jungian Analysts\, continues our series of seminars designed to deepen your knowledge of Jungian psychology. You’ll have an opportunity to learn from and engage with Analysts who are experts in their fields. \nRegistration is now open for the Winter 2022 online seminar: Psyche’s Stories: Wisdom from the Depths for the Spirit of the Times. In keeping with our entire 2021-2022 Lecture series\, the seminar will be held online\, via Zoom Meeting. Attendance is limited to 15 participants. \nPlease see the seminar description below for details and registration information. \nPsyche’s Stories: Wisdom from the Depths for the Spirit of the Times \nC.G. Jung’s revelation of the mytho-poetic dimension of the human psyche\, i.e.\, its story-making structure\, gave credence to his hypothesis of the collective unconscious\, its archetypal images and their healing intent.  In this seminar\, we explore the wisdom hidden in the Scottish fairy tale Maol a Chliobain and in the ancient myth Amor and Psyche. Together\, we will discover how these age-old stories can provide solace\, meaning and guidance during times of upheaval and transition. \nIn Maol a Chliobain\, we ask what it means to receive a mother’s blessing or curse; we feel into being tied to a rock and left behind; we recognize the pattern of moving into and out of a Giant’s laird without being caught…and then link these symbolic images to Jungian concepts such as the formation of one’s shadow and psychological complexes\, the cultivation of one’s anima and animus\, and the individuation process itself.   Our aim is to cultivate symbolic perception and apply it to everyday life. \nIn Amor and Psyche we behold Aphrodite\, the great goddess of love and beauty\, and wonder at the torture she makes Psyche endure for usurping her claim to being the most beautiful. We ponder whether there’s more to this story than Aphrodite’s jealous claim and whether the outrageous behavior of this Greek goddess\, like that of many other Greek gods\, actually has something of great importance to impart. Finally\, we look for the reverberations of Amor and Psyche in modern stories and films to understand their hold on us and to identify new variations on the ancient themes. \nReading assignments and material will be made available to all participants in advance of the sessions.\n \nDates and Times\n\nSundays from 1:00 – 3:00 pm\n\nSchedule\nMaol a Chliobain: A Scottish Fairytale \n\nJanuary 30\, 2022 – Jenny Gordon\nFebruary 6 – Jenny Gordon\nFebruary 13 – Jenny Gordon\n\nThe Ancient Myth of Amor and Psyche \n\nFebruary 27 – Diana Oxley\nMarch 6 – Diana Oxley\nMarch 13 – Diana Oxley\n\nCost\n\n12 hours of instruction: $195 (OFJ members: $185)\nSorry\, we are unable to offer refunds.\nContinuing Education Credits are available\, with one hour of CE credit for each hour of attendance. SUMMARY:What is an Archetype? Working with Large Psychic Energies
\nRegistration is now open for the Fall 2021 online seminar: What is an Archetype? Working with Large Psychic Energies. In keeping with our entire 2021-2022 Lecture series\, the seminar will be held online\, via Zoom Meeting. Attendance is limited to 15 participants. \nPlease see the seminar description below for details and registration information. \nWhat is an Archetype? Working with Large Psychic Energies \nFor Jung\, archetypes are basic forces in the human psyche that form part of our genetic or at least emergent mental heritage. They inhabit the collective unconscious. Jung believed that the human psyche was organized around fundamental experiences common to all humankind\, experiences such as having a mother or father or having or being a child. Thus there is a mother archetype\, father archetype\, and child archetype with the latter sometimes taking on a spiritual element in the form of the divine child. Archetypes are also found in psychic movement\, in dynamic processes such as rebirth\, in becoming\, in individuation. \nArchetypes describe human experiences of great intensity; where the unbound energies exceed the capacity of the ego to contain them. Experiences of such scope and depth are likely to arise in many human lives at some point\, with a range of baffling\, profound\, and sometimes disturbing effects. They may be numinous. They may give us access to the light\, or the dark\, or both. Although an archetypal engagement usually involves large forces\, these energies can at times come through the side door\, and somewhat paradoxically be encountered in small or ordinary happenings in our inner or outer lives. This seminar will explore how we might work with energies of this kind and quality\, what they might demand of us\, and what we might ask of them. \nReading assignments and material will be sent to participants two weeks before the beginning of each three-week seminar section and may be supplemented during each section.\n \nDates and Times\n\nSundays from 1:00 – 3:00 pm\n\nSchedule\n\nSeptember 26\, 2021 – Dunbar Carpenter\nOctober 3 – Dunbar Carpenter\nOctober 10 – Dunbar Carpenter\nOctober 24 – Maribeth Kallemeyn\nOctober 31 – Maribeth Kallemeyn\nNovember 7 – Maribeth Kallemeyn\n\nCost\n\n12 hours of instruction: $195 (OFJ members: $185)\nSorry\, we are unable to offer refunds.\nContinuing Education Credits are available\, with one hour of CE credit for each hour of attendance. SUMMARY:The Dynamic Psyche: Working with the Unconscious as Psychic Energy
\nRegistration is now open for the Spring 2021 online seminar: The Dynamic Psyche:  Working with the Unconscious as Psychic Energy. In keeping with our entire 2020-2021 Lecture series\, the seminar will be held online\, via Zoom Meeting. Attendance is limited to 15 participants. \nPlease see the seminar description below\, or visit ofj.org for details and registration. \nThe Dynamic Psyche:  Working with the Unconscious as Psychic Energy \nThe seminar will continue to examine the relationship to the unconscious that was the subject of the seminar given by Dunbar Carpenter and Robert Stuckey in the fall of 2019.  New and previous participants are welcome to attend. The unconscious makes its presence known in many forms\, including emotion\, imagination\, impulses\, and laughter as well as through images and dreams.  We will examine some of the forms through which the unknown parts of the psyche express themselves as part of their movement to become conscious.  For Jung\, this dialogue between the known and the unknown\, this relationship with the unconscious\, was fundamental to the psychic development he called individuation.  All psychic growth happens out of the new\, and the new always emerges from the unknown through a process Jung described as the transcendent function.  There will be a focus on the dynamic aspects of this dialogue\, on the psyche in motion\, on the unconscious as a verb rather than a noun. \nReadings for the first part of the seminar will be from Two Essays on Analytical Psychology\, which comprise Volume 7 of Jung’s Collected Works.  Participants are encouraged to purchase Volume 7 which should be available in paperback for under $25.  It is the best general introduction to Jung’s work in his own words. The primary reading for the second part of the seminar will be Jung’s essay on The Transcendent Function which is in Volume 8 of the Collected Works.\n\n \nDates and Times\n\nSundays from 1:00 – 3:00 pm\n\nSchedule\n\nMay 2\, 2021 – Dunbar Carpenter\nMay 9\, 2021 – Dunbar Carpenter\nMay 16\, 2021 – Dunbar Carpenter\nMay 30\, 2021 – Robert Stuckey\nJune 6\, 2021 – Robert Stuckey\nJune 13\,  2021 – Robert Stuckey\n\nCost\n\n12 hours of instruction: $195 (OFJ members: $185)\nSorry\, we are unable to offer refunds.\nContinuing Education Credits are available\, with one hour of CE credit for each hour of attendance. SUMMARY:Character\, like a Photograph\, Develops in Darkness: Views from the Shadow - Fall Analyst Seminar
\nHow we choose to deal with our darkness\, difficulties\, and defeats is a major factor in how our character will develop. The individuation process helps us become more conscious of our distinct traits\, like our persona and shadow.  However\, as Jung said\, “one does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light\, but by making darkness conscious.  The latter procedure\, however\, is disagreeable and therefore not popular.”  CW 13\, para. 335. \nWe will explore the personal shadow\, looking at ways in which shadow elements emerge\, how they can be worked with\, and what it means for us to work with shadow material. \n(Image from C.G. SUMMARY:Integrity: The Dynamic Coming Together of Our Complexes - Seminar I
DESCRIPTION:What is it that grabs and compels us unexpectedly\, causing us to think and act in ways that don’t fit with how we see ourselves or how we want to be? \nHow can we deal with these impulses and obsessions\, and how can we find a way to relate to them rather than trying in vain to shut them out? \nHow can this energy become a source of creative revitalization and enrichment for our lives going forward? \nIn this seminar\, Bonnie McLean and Mark Girard will take turns exploring Jung’s discovery and understanding of autonomous complexes. We will consider his use of the association experiment\, the components of complexes\, their clues in images\, dreams\, sensations\, thoughts\, behaviors and relationships. Through play and discussion\, we will look at the value of integrating these split off parts and how to nurture this individuation process. \nDates and Times\nThere will be two seminars meeting on the same day\, if the minimum of 10 people sign up for each seminar.  Please sign up for and plan to attend one of them. \n\nSeminar I:  Sundays from 1:00 – 3:00 pm\nSeminar II: Sundays from 5:00 – 7:00 pm\n\nSchedule\n\nFeb. 2\, 2020 – Bonnie McLean\nFeb. 9\, 2020 –  Bonnie McLean\nFeb. 16\, 2020 – Bonnie McLean\nMar. 1\, 2020 – Mark Girard\nMar. 8\, 2020 – Mark Girard\nMar. 15\, 2020 – Mark Girard\n\nCost\n\n12 hours of seminar instruction: $195 (OFJ members: $185)\nSorry\, we are unable to offer refunds.\nContinuing Education Credits are available\, with one hour of CE credit for each hour of attendance. SUMMARY:The Dynamic Psyche: Approaches to Working with the Unconscious - Seminar I
DESCRIPTION:The seminar is now full.\nA relationship with the unconscious is a relationship between the known and the unknown parts of the psyche. Jung believed that relationship is a key to living a balanced life\, and is the means by which we might grow throughout adulthood. Think of it as an extended conversation between ego and the other that has many forms. This seminar will explore different ways this dialogue can take place by working with some of Jung’s basic ideas on how the psyche works. There will be a particular focus on the dynamic aspects of this dialogue\, on the psyche in motion\, on the psyche as a verb rather than a noun. \nDates and Times\nThere will be two seminars meeting on the same day\, if the minimum of 10 people sign up for each seminar.  Please sign up for and plan to attend one of them. \n\nSeminar I:  Sundays from 1:00 – 3:00 pm\nSeminar II: Sundays from 4:00 – 6:00 pm\n\nSchedule\n\nSep. 29\, 2019 – Dunbar Carpenter\nOct. 6\, 2019 –   Dunbar Carpenter\nOct. 13\, 2019 – Dunbar Carpenter\nOct. 27\, 2019 – Robert Stuckey\nNov. 3\, 2019 –  Robert Stuckey\nNov. 17\, 2019 – Robert Stuckey\n\nCost\n\n12 hours of seminar instruction: $195 (OFJ members: $185)\nSorry\, we are unable to offer refunds.\nContinuing Education Credits are available\, with one hour of CE credit for each hour of attendance. SUMMARY:Open Your Mind and Follow Your Heart: Reflections on Individuation
DESCRIPTION:This Event is Sold Out\nA Spring Seminar with PNSJA Analysts \nWe will examine the stages of Jung’s Individuation Process through the archetypes of Persona\, Shadow\, Anima/Animus\, and Self. We will explore what Jung meant by these terms and how they appear in dreams and in life. Jung had an innate understanding that the body was not separate from psyche\, but he did not find a way to embody the Individuation Process. We will take a look at an emerging understanding of the body and its integration in the process towards wholeness. We will discuss the maturity and character traits that one needs in order to determine the depth and breadth of one’s individuation process. We will conclude the seminar with a Native American tale\,  Jumping Mouse and the Sacred Mountain and what it says about individuation. \n\nSix 2-hour sessions on Sundays\, beginning March 31st to May 19th (excludes OFJ Program weekend Sundays)\nTime:  1 – 3 pm\nLocation:  OFJ Library:  811 NW 20th Ave. Portland\,  97209\nCost: $195\,  $185 for OFJ members\nLimited to 12 participants\nUp to 12 hours of CEUs available\n\nMaureen O’Donnell will lead March 31\, April 7\, April 28 \nJim Soliday will lead May 5\, May 12\, and May 19 \nRequired Reading \n\nCG Jung\, Man and His Symbols\, “The Process of Individuation” (pages 159-171).\nCG Jung.  Memories\, Dreams and Reflections\, Chapter VI—“Confrontation with the Unconscious” (pages 194-225).\nMurray Stein (1998). SUMMARY:Following a Light Through the Darkness: Working with Symbols - Session 1
DESCRIPTION:This Seminar is Now Full\nPlease Contact us at info@ofj.org if you would like to be put on the waiting list.\nA Winter Seminar with PNSJA Analysts \nPain and suffering\, of whatever degree\, can leave us in the dark\, forcing us to look past conscious problem-solving to the hidden light of symbols for meaning and direction. Jung emphasized the importance of symbols as a spontaneous self-portrayal of the situation in one’s unconscious. Skillfully engaging the symbols that beckon to us just beyond the grasp of everyday consciousness can be essential for developing depth\, meaning\, and direction in our lives. Almost anything can be symbolic. In this seminar we’ll develop skills in experiencing\, associating\, amplifying and reflecting on symbols which arise in our dreams\, forms of active imagination\, drawings\, body symptoms\, day to day encounters\, and in Sandplay. All levels of experience are welcome. \n\nSix 2-hour sessions on Sundays\, beginning February 3 to March 24 (excludes OFJ Program weekend Sundays)\nTime:  1 – 3 pm\nLocation:  OFJ Library:  811 NW 20th Ave. Portland\,  97209\nCost: $195\,  $185 for OFJ members\nLimited to 12 participants\nUp to 12 hours of CEUs available\n\nMark Girard will lead February 3\, February 10\, February 24 \nBonnie McLean will lead March 3\, March 10\, and March 24 \nSuggested Reading \n\nDreams\, C.G. SUMMARY:Special Film Seminar Weekend: "The Way of the Dream"
DESCRIPTION:This unique documentary\, produced and directed by Fraser Boa\, is a series of 20 half-hour films on the dreams of ordinary people. \nIncluded in this series is a montage of people around the world responding to three questions: Do you dream? Do you think your dreams are important? Can you recall a dream? The film crew traveled over 25\,000 miles\, to Canada\, England\, France\, Switzerland and the United States\, for these spontaneous reactions. \nThe basic structure of the series is a more formal telling of personal dreams by a smaller group of men and women followed with interpretations of these dreams by Dr. von Franz. Certain motifs and archetypes are illustrated in these dreams and include : The male shadow; the negative and positive anima; patterns in dreams; the female shadow; negative and positive animus; dreams of our culture; dreams of relationships; dreams of The Self. SUMMARY:Gnostics: The Knowledge of the Heart: A Film Seminar
DESCRIPTION:A drama-documentary film made by Stephen Segaller\, creator/producer of The Wisdom of the Dream. Gnostics was winner of the Gold Medal for religious programs at the 31st New York International Film and Television Festival\, 1988.\nDr. Stephen A. Hoeller will offer an independent point of view. He will introduce the series\, provide commentary\, and moderate discussion. \nGnostics is a film in four parts. \nThe knowledge of the heart which the gnostics sought went beyond dogma and faith to individual experience of spiritual realities. Long suppressed\, the Gnostic pulse continued to beat until our era\, when Carl Jung recognized the vital importance of its orientation and conclusions for the Self\, for the feminine side of God\, for the problem of evil and for the place of human beings in the cosmos. \nPart One documents the new light that has been cast on the early Gnostics following the 1945 discovery\, by an Egyptian peasant\, of the 2000 year old Nag Hammadi manuscripts. \nAuthor/scholar/filmmaker Stephan Segaller then focuses on the Cathars of twelfth-century southern France\, who cast aside Church authority for a time and sought Gnosis in another form. \nIn the third film\, Segaller shows hermetic philosophy\, alchemy\, magic\, and the Gnostic attitude coming to synthesis in Renaissance Italy at the time of the Medicis\, and the later impact of the myserious magician John Dee\, who may have inspred Shakespeare’s Prospero. Segaller also touches upon the modern-day use of hermetic principles. \nThe last film deals with the Gnostic attitude towards tragedy\, the appeal of Gnosticism to Jung and contemporary practitioners of Gnosticism. \nFeatured scholars\, therapists and actors include Nigel Harrison\, Elaine Pagels\, James Robinson\, Gilles Quispel\, Brian Blessed\, C.A. Meier\, Hans Jonas\, Aniela Jaffe\, June Singer\, and Carl Jung.

SUMMARY:Film Seminar: This Business of the Gods: Joseph Campbell in Conversation with Fraser Boa
DESCRIPTION:In this newly released\, four-hour film series\, Joseph Campbell weaves together a vivid compendium of insights into both myth and modern life-including his own-as he responds to Jungian analyst Fraser Boa’s off-screen questions. The PBS series\, The Power of Myth\, gave us a dynamic dialogue between explorer of contemporary ideas\, Moyers\, and scholar of perennial mythology\, Campbell. This film is more psychologically oriented\, both in content and its portrait of Joseph Campbell\, the lively conversationalist and passionate teacher\, who with mind and hands dances through the enormous body of knowledge that was his life’s work.
