SUMMARY:The vision thing: Myth\, politics and psyche in the world
DESCRIPTION:George Bush\, the elder\, did not have in mind the fundamental interconnectedness of myth\, politics and psyche when he inadvertently coined the phrase “the vision thing.” Yet\, the very awkwardness of Bush’s phrase points to the inherent tension between the real and the visionary between the conscious and unconscious. Indeed\, the “vision thing” problem is at the heart of ongoing paradoxes in our individual and collective lives and in our mythological and political orientations. This lecture will explore the “vision thing” through examples from contemporary American and international political conflicts.

DESCRIPTION:This presentation will cover: understanding depression and the quest for meaning\, knowing suicide and its creative potential\, and egocide and transformation (an innovative Jungian humanistic therapeutic paradigm). Egocide and transformation entails healing depressive and suicidal states through the creative technique of active imagination. In other words\, the symbolic death of a destructive ego (and shadow) — ‘the false self’ — and the subsequent creative expressions lead to the birth of the ‘true self.’ Dr. Rosen will also talk about crisis points (such as adolescence\, mid-life\, divorce and loss of a loved one) and how egocide can help.

SUMMARY:Dreams as the Journey With the Soul
DESCRIPTION:The Friday lecture\, entitled “The Hundredth Dreamer”\, will outline the historical and cultural factors and attitudes that\, in effect\, have eclipsed dreamwork in Western society\, in spite of the work of Freudians and Jungians. These factors have typological characteristics that have produced resistances to the type of consciousness needed for dreamwork\, namely introverted\, intuitive\, and feeling traits. We will see this in Jung’s early life\, as described by him in his 1925 seminar. It will be shown how these resistances have dampened dreamwork in our society and how they often appear within a dream consciousness and content.

SUMMARY:The Tao of Story: From Dracula to Bodhisattva
DESCRIPTION:Stories inspire and shape our lives\, from the archetypal dramas we unconsciously enact\, to the jokes we make about the boss at work. Yet stories also plague us\, and this weekend’s lecture and workshop will focus on four such problematic situations. \nThe Friday evening lecture addresses the problem of being stuck in a story\, endlessly repeating the same script — a plight dramatize by Dracula\, who was compelled by the vampire curse to feed on the living. Fortunately Scheherazade from “The Thousand and One Arabian Nights” shows a way out of stuck stories\, by using the psychology of five fundamental genres of narrative — myth\, fact\, fairy tale\, legend\, and the favorite tale: transformation results from experiencing each genre in that specific order — a sequence characteristic of initiation rituals.

SUMMARY:The Archetypal Dynamics of Relationships
DESCRIPTION:How is it that relationships\, which bring us the greatest joy in life\, also confront us with the greatest difficulties? Why do so many of us simply give up in the face of the humiliating hurts that relationships engender? Well\, acording to Jung\, it’s all in the service of our individuation. The more conscious we are of the dynamics at work in relationships\, the less turbulent will be their effects on us. In a little-known section of Volume VII of the Collected Works [para 374-406]\, Jung speaks of the “mana personality.” This archetypal element holds the key to understanding why relationships can become problematic. This weekend we shall look at the dynamics of relationship. We shall focus particularly on the anima and animus\, those bridge dynamics that connect the ego with the Self.  \nFriday night we’ll review Graham Greene’s The End of the Affair\, which can either be read in book form or seen in the movie (currently in release). What can we learn from a man’s encounter with the Self\, as facilitated by his anima\, which is fixated on a woman with whom he is having an affair?

SUMMARY:Patterning in the Psyche and the Natural World
DESCRIPTION:Nowhere is the confluence of the relationship between matter and psyche more clearly expressed than in the formation of patterns. Existing within both the internal world of psyche and the outer natural world\, archetypal patterns are expressions of an innate ordering process which gives matter its specific form and design. We find these deeply textured patterns present within the world of fairy tales\, myths\, and dreams. We can see similar archetypal patterns expressed in our architectural designs\, cities\, cultures\, and even on a personal level in our choice of spouse\, employee\, or therapist. In fact\, with a discerning eye\, we can often intuit the expression of the destiny that is suggested by the patterns established within our lives. \nIn this lecture and workshop Dr. Conforti will discuss the formation of patterns and their relationship to archetypes. Much attention will be given to the work of what he terms “Archetypal Pattern Recognition”\, and its application with the therapeutic\, personal\, corporate and global arenas.

DESCRIPTION:Experiences in early childhood that cause unbearable psychic pain or anxiety (trauma) can leave the personality and the human spirit threatened with destruction. In this lecture\, using dream examples from the clinical situation and the fairy tale of Rapunzel\, we will see how an archetypal defense emerges to save the imperishable human spirit from further trauma\, but at the price of encapsulating a core of selfhood\, thus cutting it off from life. SUMMARY:A Textbook of Integrity: A Contemporary Commentary on the I Ching
DESCRIPTION:The I Ching is an oracular book which has been used for divination in China for at least 3000 years. Although it has shamanic roots and Taoist content\, the I Ching is one of the foundations of Confucian philosophy\, which places emphasis on the correct handling of situations. In the West\, students of C.G. Jung’s psychology have turned to the I Ching when an archetypal issue demands an ethical standpoint. SUMMARY:A New Look at Active Imagination
DESCRIPTION:For Jung\, life is paradox\, so it is not surprising that he described his most important ideas in paradoxical ways. On the one hand\, active imagination is a meditative procedure or expressive technique meant to be used by the patient alone\, away from the analyst. On the other hand\, by linking active imagination to his symbolic method of dream interpretation and to the dynamics of the therapeutic relationship\, Jung seems to be laying the groundwork for a comprehensive method of psychotherapy. Orpheus was recognized as the most important poet in Greek mythology. This lecture will include images from the myth of Orpheus to illuminate the contemporary problem between men and women\, and between the human species and nature.

SUMMARY:Australian Aboriginal Dreaming: How It Works and What it Has to Teach Us
DESCRIPTION:You may be familiar with the concept of the Australian Aboriginal Dreaming or creation stories through Bruce Chatwin’s novel The Song Lines\, or through Australian Aboriginal art works or popular films and novels which convey something of the mystery and exoticism of Aboriginal Culture. This illustrated lecture will help introduce people who live on the American continent to the way the Australian continent has been imagined and constructed (made) by the Aboriginal Creation ancestors. The Dreaming is a very pragmatic way of telling stories\, encoding cultural and ecological knowledge and ensuring the physical and spiritual survival of the groups of nomadic peoples who inhabited Australia for tens of thousands of years. Craig San Roque will explain how the dreaming works and what the aboriginal creation stories have to teach contemporary peoples (of any culture). Drawing upon extensive on-the-ground experience in central Australia\, upon friendships with Aboriginal people\, and upon a Jungian psychological background\, he will attempt to give as straightforward account as possible of what the dreaming is and what it is not. This will involve some demystification and also some stories on intercultural ethics

DESCRIPTION:The ancient Irish\, Welsh\, and Scots storytellers left us a rich collection of myths dealing with the relations between the interpenetrating realms of nature and the supernatural. One category of their art deals with the journeys that adventurers\, kings\, and pilgrims make into the timeless Otherworld of the Land of Promise\, what we would call the world of archetypal form. Reflecting on some of these can provide clues to the initiatory ordeals that modern individuals may encounter when they confront unconscious forces on the long path of individuation. We will see that our blessing and pathologies find echoes in the rewards and stumblings of our ancestors.

DESCRIPTION:Almost everyone participates in work groups and organizations. Often more time and energy is spent in these contexts than anywhere else. Individuals can be wounded by the power of organizations and the organizational unconscious. The question is how to grow and benefit from these involvements. The individual person’s unconscious and the unconscious of the organization intermesh\, and the individual projects onto the organization as the organization also projects onto the individual. Archetypal roles are assigned and taken up\, or resisted and fought. Conflicts arise around misperceptions and misguided ambitions and longings. The psychological task for both individual and organization is to become conscious of these dynamics and to use them for further development. In the lecture\, Dr. Stein will apply Jungian theory and the alchemical model to psyche in the workplace.

SUMMARY:The Relationship Between Psychology and Architecture: The Interaction Between the Built Outer World and the Humane Inner World
DESCRIPTION:We have to consider the fact that houses are works of people for people. Architecture and psychology are inseparably bound together. If we build a simple little hut in our garden or if we are planning and constructing a complicated building\, the psyche of the architect or worker is always involved. The symbol of the house\, which contains the real concrete house\, the one we can touch\, and the spiritual image – the imago of the house – is always connected with the human being – with our body\, soul\, and spirit. \nThe fundamental experience that people make houses and houses make people expresses a process moving from the inner world into the outer world\, and from there\, it reflects back to act again on the inner world of people. This means that people get stamped by architecture\, and if we think further\, many people can be stamped by one person\, namely\, by the one who imagines and constructs the building. \nThis thought alarmed me. I asked myself: Who are these people who build? What image do they have of the people for whom they build? How much do they know about the souls of the people? How much about the interchange between the built outer world and the humane inner world? Are they aware enough of the responsibility they have for people and their environments? \nThe evening lecture will address the relationship between psychology and architecture\, the symbolism of the house\, and the inner-outer world process of “making houses.”

DESCRIPTION:The true identity of Mary Magdalene – an alleged prostitute\, visionary and the disciple who Jesus loved the most – is as elusive as the biblical\, Gnostic and popular accounts of her are diverse. With the help of a remarkably varied collection of some 120 images from the history of European painting\, fascinating new scriptural accounts from the Gnostic Nag Hammadi Library\, a bit of Catholic legend\, and a dream of a contemporary woman\, we will consider the crucial psychological and religious significance of this highly differentiated personality of Christian history. Mary’s kinship with Eve\, Sophia\, Aphrodite\, anima mundi and other kindred figures will be explored\, as well as her relationship with Christ. Magdalene will be seen as a paradigm of feminine individuation and a reflection of the male anima\, as well as in relation to Gnostic ritual and the “Mystery of the Bridal Chamber” on one hand\, and as a solitary exile to southern France\, on the other.

SUMMARY:Jung and the Split Feminine:  A Psychohistorical Exploration of the Building of a Theory
DESCRIPTION:In Memories\, Dreams and Reflections\, Jung describes his own early life as a gravely troubled period in his individuation. Nowhere is this disturbance more profound than in his relationship with his mother\, which Jung himself describes as deeply split\, highly conflicted\, and fraught with anxiety. The consequences of this most primary of Jung’s relationships shaped not only  his character and pattern of interpersonal relations\, but they left deep and lasting imprints on the theory and concepts of analytical psychology as well. \nThis presentation will trace and explore these intimate and problematic connections between Jung’s early life struggles and core Jungian concepts such as the anima/animus syzygy and notions of the masculine and feminine. By illuminating these hidden influences in the building of theory\, the talk will outline ways in which these central tenets of analytical psychology\, once viewed as liberating\, now tend to imprison men and women in restrictive gender identifications and negatively impact their individuation potentials.
