SUMMARY:Threads\, Knots\, and Tapestries:  Our Dream Stories and the Collective Unconscious
DESCRIPTION:We are connected and dream in more objective ways than has previously been acknowledged by traditional psychology. Objective dreams compensate or give one factual data about waking reality – relationships\, health\, life choices\, etc. Some dreams are meant for more than the dreamer – a bigger audience – the family\, the community\, the tribe. Often these experiences of unconscious connection happen at the cross roads of our existence\, e. g.\, death or critical opportunity. Then\, the psyche speaks in a rare way – and one is healed by listening. Humans are pack animals and the dream make r k n ows well this ancient rule of our tribal nature. Within one’s own dream theat re\, our stories unfold using the characters from our lives to weave a pattern – each connected to the other in fascinating complexity. The “communal unconscious” which is the territory that resides between the personal and collective unconscious\, will be introduced using examples from synchronicities and dreams.

SUMMARY:The Mask of Dionysus: Possession and Healing
DESCRIPTION:Twice-born Dionysus is the Greek god who suddenly appears out of absence. Dismembered and reconstituted\, surrounded by women\, Dionysus is the giver of wine\, healer who causes madness\, and ecstatic lover. His strangely masked appearance called listeners to join his orgiastic celebrations. For both those who answered the call\, and for those who refused\, there were intense consequences. Jung described the Dionysian psychological quality as “a flood of overpowering universal feeling which bursts forth irresistibly\, intoxicating the senses like the strongest wine…something instinctive and blindly compelling finds its expression in an affection of the bodily sphere\, the breaking loose of the unbridled dynamism of animal and divine nature.” \nIn analysis\, when the archetype of Dionysus erupts in the psyche\, the individual’s fate is deeply impacted by the encounter. This lecture examines epiphanic moments such as possession by love or attraction and addiction to drugs or alcohol. How do we struggle consciously with such energy\, and let it express itself without destroying what is already built? Slides of Dionysian initiation in Greece and in Roman Pompeii will be shown to amplify the clinical material.

SUMMARY:Active Imagination and the Visions Seminar
DESCRIPTION:C.G.Jung described active imagination as “the creative secret of the mind” where –through visioning\, dance and /or art work–consciousness and the unconscious work together in a profoundly healing way. The VISIONS SEMINAR is Jung’s great exploration of active imagination as a potent methodology for expanding the psyche and reuniting the patient with archetypal\, healing images that lie beneath personal complexes. The active imagination in the VISIONS SEMINAR also expresses one woman’s quest for healing engendered by transformative\, passionate feminine images –images flowering in many people’s psyches’ today. \nJung’s 1930’s seminars were based on active imaginations painted and recorded by Christiana Morgan\, a gifted young woman from New England who had been in analysis with him. In the course of her research\, Dr. Douglas discovered Morgan’s complete series of visions which link the chthonic\, dynamic\, and erotic feminine with the Divine. \nThrough slides and lecture\, Dr. Douglas will explore the historical background of active imagination. She will examine the VISIONS SEMINARS relevance in the creation of Jungian theory\, especially of active\nimagination\, anima and animus\, typology\, and the psychology of women.

SUMMARY:The Tears of God: Grief as an Opening to the Divine
DESCRIPTION:The alchemy of the grieving process dissolves the conscious mind and its intentions\, and in a descent into the soul’s seasons of grief one meets the Oprhan\, an encounter which can transform personal loss into a journey of homecoming. Grief can be home-work\, and the Orphan\, the most homeless of all\, can lead us into that place where the wounds to love are the cracks through which a sense of the Divine shines through. The wonder\, even miracle\, of this moment is the recognition that our human tears of grief are mirrored in the tears of the Divine who hungers for an encounter with us. We grieve because we have dared to love\, and we can love again in an expanded way and allow ourselves to be loved because we have taken the time to grieve.

A pioneer in exploring the psyche’s evolution\, Jung discovered its primordial foundation\, which he named “natural man.” \nInterwoven with dreams and stories from Jung’s travels and his life at Bollingen\, this program showcases his challenging observations and prophetic predictions about technology and modern life. Following the tradition of the Taoist rainmaker whom he admired\, Jung speaks as a culture shaman who shares our malaise and knows that restoring our own living connection with Nature contributes to healing the whole.

SUMMARY:The Fate of America
DESCRIPTION:The events of September 11 and the war on terrorism have focused our attention on America’s future in a renewed and pressing way. Given our extroverted orientation\, much of our focus is on the “other\,” on the enemy outside of us. However\, our domestic and internal spiritual condition is also in need of serious attention\, and is inextricably linked with our foreign policy. The same psychological attitudes influence both domestic and international (inner and outer) spheres. As Jung concluded in 1930\, the central\, archetypal force shaping American attitudes is a powerful “Heroic Ideal” or aspiration toward greatness. Today\, this heroic ideal is in a state of upheaval. We are suffering\, albeit unconsciously\, from a heroic-identity crisis: What does it mean to be a heroic or great people? It is imperative to our future as a nation and civilization that we begin to examine this and to understand ourselves. This talk will focus on the archetypal underpinnings of our national character and their relevance to the events of our day and the future of America.

Haiku usually concerns nature and an image created out of a few words. Haiku ( a form of Jung’s active imagination) is a spiritual art form that promotes healing. As the poet W. H. Auden said (quoting his father who was a physician)\, “Healing is the intuitive art of wooing nature.”

Examples used will include dreams\, synchronistic events\, symbols from the Tarot and from the arts\, and passages from the works of Jung. Based on his research at the C.G. Jung Institute in Zürich\, Dr. Granrose will compare the concept of the magician with those of the shaman\, the trickster\, and the fool. In this talk\, she will describe her concept of a Zen of Circle Maintenance and the Jungian analytic vessel\, the connection between morphic fields and the collective unconscious\, and the connection between the Grail Legend\, the feminine principle\, and a shift in planetary consciousness.

DESCRIPTION:When Jung published in 1920 the first edition of Psychological Types\, he wrote in his Foreword: “This book is the fruit of twenty years’ work in the domain of practical psychology.” This dating places the inception of the work near the beginning of his long career\, and though later editions would include an Appendix of four short essays on the subject\, they do not add to the original work. He had had his say on this complex topic\, and was not influenced by a very large body of commentary on his theory. \nThe work has evoked a wide range of responses\, including several attempts to develop tests by which a person can be “typed” as Introverted/Thinking/Sensation/Judging or Extroverted/Feeling/ Intuitive/Perceptive – and so on. (“Judging” and “Perceptive” were additions by Myers and Briggs to the original scheme.) These tests have introduced Jungian thought to a much larger public than has been reached by his other works\, and devout Jungians have varied widely in their estimation of this part of his collective opus. \nThis lecture will focus upon negative aspects of each of the types\, as Jung himself tended to do\, asking the question: If one is\, say\, an Introverted Intuitive\, what is the price one must pay for this fate? We know much about working with personal unconscious material. Jung\, however\, pushes deeper in his work and invites us to research and work with archetypal forces that manifest in our personal process. These experiences are often pathologized\, although they have been experienced\, observed and discussed since the beginning of human consciousness. This lecture will discuss the importance of recognizing\, witnessing and containing these archetypal energies when they become embodied and emerge in our lives and in our analysis. DESCRIPTION:Jung’s analytical psychology has developed in many places in the United States and in the world. Much of the spread has been during the past quarter century. As we enter into the twenty-first century\, there has been a tendency not to remember how analytical psychology developed in this country. It is the purpose of this talk to briefly review the founding of analytical psychology in three areas: New York\, San Francisco and Los Angeles. These were the three areas in the United States where Jung’s psychology developed during the lifetime of Jung\, and as a result\, he influenced how these professional groups developed. In these localities the founders had had their analyses with Jung\, which had an important bearing on how each professional society developed. This talk will be illustrated with photos of the founders of the different Jungian societies. Implications for the state of analytical psychology today will be presented.

Silence is an autonomous phenomenon\, more like a region we can learn to step into than simply the absence of noise. This weekend explores Silence as basic to soul experience. \nThe evening lecture explores the barriers to the region of silence through the imagery of the Isenheim Altar and some of the writing of St. Anthony the Great. We will see that we have to find the gateway to Silence. Guardians have to be met and faced. How these guardians function in the present world is presented\, along with suggestions concerning how to recognize them and how to honor their autonomy.

SUMMARY:“Testing the Spirits” – False Prophets and True Healers in the Old Age and in the New Age
DESCRIPTION:The title alludes to a saying from the Christian Bible. In its original context\, the advice to test the “spirits” implies a warning about the many varieties of spirituality promoted in the second-century world\, and it offers a warning against trusting every so-called “spirit” that advertises itself as healing. Discernment is necessary. But how can one tell one “spirit” from another? \nThis presentation will explore responses to this question from religious traditions and also from contemporary depth psychology\, since in these first days of a new millennium there are as many winds of “spirit” blowing as there were two thousand years ago. Today there is talk about this “spirituality” and that one in many realms: politics\, media\, religions\, New Age spirituality\, advertising and athletics. How is one to judge what is going on spiritually in our time? This is as perplexing a problem now as when C.G. Jung wrote in 1928: “I believe that the spirit is a dangerous thing and I do not believe in its paramouncy!”

It is the poets who can guide us in a time like our own\, when the myths are changing. Poets know how to follow the waves of the cultural unconscious\, how to fish in the vast waters of the collective unconscious\, bringing up treasure from the deep. \nThis talk is an act of imagination\, an articulation of an inner dialogue with the poetic Self. We will consider what poetry has to do with Jungian analysis. We will listen to the news as told by the poets\, especially those who are bringing the goddess back to consciousness.

DESCRIPTION:The Mesopotamian goddess Inanna wears on her robe “the carved-out ground plan of heaven and earth\,” thus declaring herself to be the architect of perceived reality. Her plan\, as described by the poet and priestess Enheduanna\, encompasses both the beauty\, joy and goodness of life as well as sorrow\, tragedy\, pain\, violence and death. Inanna herself embodies paradox and creates for her human subjects all the difficult opposing forces of the outer and inner worlds. From Jung’s psychology we learn that the demanding contradictions that challenge every human being are the whet stones on which we hone our individuality and widen the circumference of our consciousness. We will explore transformative strategy of embracing dark and light\, examining this process as a gateway to understanding the Divine Feminine.

SUMMARY:Caves of the soul
DESCRIPTION:The metaphor of the cave that one enters bearing only the modest candle of one’s intention to light the unknown depths and darkness is a very apt image of the exploration of self. With that image in mind\, this lecture will retrace a recent pilgrimage to the Dordogne region of southwestern France to explore prehistoric caves and rock shelters of Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon humans where painted images suggest early stages of mankind’s differentiation. We will also re-trace the traveling group’s visit to the great Cathedral at Chartres to experience another kind of “cave” made by men above the ground. These sites of exploration offer similar impressions of the perennial search in the deep places of the soul for\, and the experience of\, a transcendent Other. The lecture will discuss some of these cave sites and show slides of some of the surviving paintings. Using these images we will “go into the caves” together to examine the process of opening oneself to the personal depths of Psyche\, to the experience of the mysterium tremendum et fascinans. We will explore the psychological meanings of sacred space and the “thin places” in the world where the ego and Self\, the human and the Divine\, meet in fruitful exchange.
