SUMMARY:The Unveiling of What Is Hidden
DESCRIPTION:In the ninth volume of his Collected Works\, Archtypes and the Collective Unconscious\, Jung selected Khidr from the 18th sutra of the Koran as an Image of the Guide in the psychological process of rebirth and transformation. His Eranos colleague\, Henri Corbin\, philosopher and Iranologist\, respected Khidr as a Threshold Figure\, an Awakener into the Imaginal World. By way of amplification\, Corbin brought to the Western world the work of the 13th century Islamic mystic\, Ibn Arabi\, who was first initiated by his experience with Khidr. In his wealth of writings\, Ibn Arabi highlighted the existence of an organ of perception that perceives a very precise order of reality\, the mundus imaginalis. In the Friday evening lecture\, we will explore the writings of Ibn Arabi\, the organ of perception and the realm of Khidr.

SUMMARY:The Feminine Principle in the Kabbalah: Shades of Darkness and Light
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Nash has taken much delight in this image of the Shekinah\, the feminine presence of God in Judaism\, known as the Divine Presence (literally “indwelling”)\, that accompanied the joyous recognition of the power of the feminine principle. Such joy however was popularly accompanied by a naïve glorification of “her\,” which twisted the dark side of the feminine into light\, overlooking and casting out the realities of evil and the difficult path that leads to transformation through the hard work of integrating the shadow. In accord with Jung\, the ancient Kabbalists painted a far more varied and intricate portrait of the feminine aspect of God\, both light and dark – a spectrum of potencies ranging from creation to destruction\, from loving sexual union to demonic possession.

SUMMARY:The Incalculable Paradoxes of Love
DESCRIPTION:In Friday night’s lecture\, we will encounter what Jung called\, in his later years\, “the incalculable paradoxes of love.” Our single word “love” fails to adequately capture and express the powerful\, often contradictory feelings that drive behavior and animate one’s soul. We will turn to the three Greek words for love (eros\, philia\, and agape) and explore the psychological distinctions they express. We will look at both the inter-personal and intra-psychic dynamics of love\, as well as its light and dark sides. Finally\, we will address the healing and wounding nature of this greatest of paradoxes.

SUMMARY:Quotidian Conversations: Working with Symbolic Images in Dreams and Everyday Life
DESCRIPTION:The deeper layers of our psyches are constantly communicating with us via symbols. Amid the demands of everyday life we may notice this only in passing\, usually first giving it our attention after a dream presents us with particularly enigmatic images and we wonder what it might mean. This program is offered as a small retreat where we will take the opportunity to look at symbolic process\, the basis of Jung’s work. \nThe Friday lecture will start with a profound 28-minute film in which Yo-Yo Ma introduces his friend David Blum\, also a professional musician. David explains how\, when he left the security of his preferred language of expression\, music\, and dared to pick up some children’s pastels to draw scenes from his dreams\, he unwittingly engaged in conversation with his inner self. We follow him as he shows us his pictures and talks movingly about his own skepticism\, shyness\, curiosity and wonder\, and the unexpected reward of finding a layer of rich meaning in his colorful\, naïvely-styled pictures. In our discussion of this moving account\, we will review Jung’s ideas about symbolic images\, and include some of the newer findings from brain scans\, which unite cognition and emotion.

SUMMARY:The Healing Value of Personal Narrative: How Writing One’s Memoir Facilitates Individuation
DESCRIPTION:It is well known that self-disclosure in journals and autobiography in general promotes emotional and physical health. On Friday evening\, Dr. Rosen will illustrate the healing value of writing a personal narrative in the form of autobiography with a single case-study: himself. He will demonstrate the process of writing a memoir as a “haibun”-a combination of prose and haiku about his life-long pilgrimage to the center of profound mystery. His own autobiography (presented as an inner and outer journey based on his life-review\, an analysis of interviews with family and friends\, as well as dreams and experiences recorded in journals since his eighteenth year) emerged as a painful yet healing experience. When such a review is carried out in an honest and thorough way\, one’s lost soul can find its way home. As the Zen writer Matsuo Basho revealed: “Each day is a journey and the journey itself home\,” an insight echoed by Soen Nakagawa Roshi: “If you cannot return home\, your self is not your true self.”

DESCRIPTION:The power of Eros can take us to ecstatic heights\, but also to the depths of despair. We experience this power whenever we fall in love or whenever longing for another overtakes us. As long as we remain unaware that the ideal image of the beloved is a projection of our own psychic content\, and the more our longing for wholeness is confused with the external satisfaction of erotic fantasies\, the more we can get lost in compulsive longing\, destructive relationships and sexual addictions. Understanding the archetype of Eros can help us develop a sense of how Eros can become destructively connected with addiction. We will seek to understand the nature of Eros and erotic longing in both its sensual and spiritual aspects.

SUMMARY:Cosmos and Psyche: Jungian Archetypes and Astrology
DESCRIPTION:Jung began to examine astrology as early as 1911\, when he mentioned his inquiries in a letter to Freud. That interest gradually developed into a major focus of investigation\, and in his later years Jung devoted himself with considerable passion to astrological research. “Astrology\,” he stated\, “represents the sum of all the psychological knowledge of antiquity.” Insights from these studies influenced many of his most significant formulations in the final\, extraordinarily fruitful phase of his life’s work\, including archetypal theory\, synchronicity\, and the philosophy of history. Since his death\, reports from his family and others close to him have revealed that in his last decades Jung came to employ the analysis of his patients’ astrological charts as a regular and integral aspect of his clinical work. \nYet astrology runs so directly counter to the long-established cosmology that encompasses the modern world view that one can appreciate Jung’s reluctance to make public the extent of his use of astrology\, and the resistance of many Jungian analysts to further explore the astrological direction their founder had pursued. However\, recent research by Richard Tarnas and Stanislav Grof gives new support for Jung’s intuition of the value of astrology and of the trans-psychic (or “psychoid”) nature of the archetypes. These observations suggest the existence of an extraordinarily consistent synchronistic correspondence between planetary movements and the archetypal patterns of human experience\, reflecting something like a cosmic anima mundi in which the human being participates. \nOn Friday\, Dr. Tarnas will summarize this evidence\, discuss the new light it sheds on the human psyche and the unfolding drama of history\, and explore the implications it holds for Jungian psychology.

DESCRIPTION:The word “hero” is so broadly used in our day that it begins to lose its mythic sense. But the mythic Hero – larger than life and required to accomplish impossible tasks at great risk\, bringing hope and redemption to lesser mortals – stands in an important relationship to the Self. Implied in the Hero’s grand mission are ideas of personal responsibility and vocation\, two themes we meet frequently in Jung’s theory of individuation but do not often examine. This presentation\, illustrated with film clips from the feature film\, Seabiscuit\, will invite conversation about the collective psychological phenomenon that was a horse named Seabiscuit – a true mythic Hero\, and the human partners who engaged with him in a mutual process of transformation.

SUMMARY:Creativity: The Holy Other as Transcendent Healer in Analysis\, Community and Culture
DESCRIPTION:Although neither traditional nor radically alternative\, creative expression in Jungian analysis arises as the third transcendent healing opportunity\, completing the dyad of analyst and analysand. This creative third can be a dream or an active imagination\, sometimes in the form of a work of art\, sometimes not\, but always expressing the transcendent function of the Self in its creative play of the tension of opposites. Using examples from clinical cases\, social experiments\, and excerpts from the films of the Japanese master director Akira Kurosawa\, the function of creativity will be explored both on a personal basis and in its larger collective and cultural role in our societies and our world community.

SUMMARY:The Coming of Light at Times of Darkness
DESCRIPTION:Tonight we celebrate the coming of the holiday season. The Winter Solstice\, the longest night and the shortest day of the year\, is a symbol of the coming of light when the powers of darkness are at their strongest. Darkness eventually gives way to light\, just as dark nights of the soul soften our egos and lift our faces to the Self. Moreover\, if we ponder them from the perspective of Sufi\, esoteric Christian\, and related paths\, darkness and light also refer to states of consciousness that are healing if we access them. Darkness is the holding\, containing Mother-Father consciousness\, sometimes called the Absolute\, which gives birth to Light\, symbol of the Holy Child and the essential Self of every human being. Tonight\, Dr. Wittine will describe these states of consciousness by drawing on Jungian theory\, esoteric teachings\, and experiences of people doing inner work. DESCRIPTION:We live in a remarkable time\, a time in which our intellectual prowess is unsurpassed and seems to grow in leaps and bounds. We can soar to the moon\, design life in a test tube and condense the entire encyclopedia into a tiny chip. Our brains are in overdrive and yet\, something is sorely missing. Some characterize this element that is lacking as a HER – a more feminine way of being. Despite years of progress within the women’s movement\, the breadth and depth of the feminine archetype has plenty of wilderness yet to be explored. By Her very nature\, She is hard to describe – emotional\, relational\, closer to the instinctual and natural worlds. Rather than trying to get to know Her\, we prefer to tame\, control and manage Her. She complies as She adapts\, adorns and abdicates Her own genuine authority. And everybody loses. What sets Her apart? Why is She so easily demonized? What are we afraid of? What is your relationship to the feminine? How do you respond to the feminine in others? How can we help Her thrive in this world?

DESCRIPTION:Christians honor God on their knees\, Jews rock back and forth on their heels\, Muslims prostrate themselves\, and all thereby connect with what Jung called the numinous. There are similarities and differences among religious practices that awaken numinosity\, mirrored in our images of their founders – Moses climbing a mountain\, Jesus walking through crowds\, Mohammed on his steed\, and the Buddha seated in meditation. In this lecture Dr. Spiegelman will present brief examples of the ways followers of various spiritual paths experience the numinous: the Taoist from “within”\, the Muslim “among” other Muslims during the Hajj\, “between” in alchemy\, while the Hindu finds it all “around” through nature\, art\, music\, and synchronicity.

SUMMARY:The Two Faces of Enlightenment
DESCRIPTION:In almost every spiritual tradition there appear two aspects of the Divine: the immanent and the transcendent. Although some traditions favor one or the other of these faces of God\, most try to find a means of uniting them. The immanent face of God looks to the world and seems involved in our daily lives\, while the transcendent face looks away from the world and seems unconcerned with normal day to day life. Both aspects reflect truth about divine reality\, but also about the needs of the human psyche. For the psyche to experience its own awakening and fulfillment\, it needs to discover two forms of enlightenment: one that unites it with the immanent and one with the transcendent. Dr. Raff will address these two forms of enlightenment in this lecture from both a theoretical and practical perspective.

SUMMARY:Personal and Cultural Complexes
DESCRIPTION:“Private and public cannot be separated.” – James Hillman \nAccording to Jung\, personal complexes are “splinter psyches.” One implication of this is that as individuals we disavow parts of ourselves when a complex is activated within our psyches. This is a common occurrence for all of us\, as complexes express themselves in powerful moods\, affects\, repetitive behaviors and tones of voice and body language.The disavowed part of ourselves is typically projected onto others. Jung frequently asserted that a complex is a natural\, essential ingredient of psychological life. But we often suffer with our complexes as they cause intrapsychic and interpersonal unrest in our lives. Consciously reclaiming\, integrating\, and healing our personal complexes is a curious and demanding life task\, but one necessary for our individuation process. \nThe dictionary defines a culture as “the way of life of a people\,” and Jung frequently asserted that a complex is a natural\, essential ingredient of psychological life. San Francisco analysts\, Kimbles and Singer\, have formulated the concept of the cultural complex. Their new perspective asserts that a group or culture has a psyche\, similar to the individual psyche\, and that within the collective psyche complexes can manifest. These manifestations can cause chaos and danger\, but this modern development of Jung’s complex theory also holds the hope that we may eventually understand the forces of conflict\, acknowledge and own our group participation in the complex\, and transform the complex into a collaborative and peaceful resolution. While this hope may seem idealistic\, a new vision of how groups relate with one another is imperative for an individuation process to occur within cultures.Without this vision we will continue to operate within the age-old perils. In this lecture and workshop\, Dr Hone will identify and illustrate with slides the nature of personal and cultural complexes and how they are enacted in our everyday lives as well as in the global arena. She will explore how we project the disowned parts of ourselves onto our spouses\, children\, bosses and onto other races\, religions and genders. In dialogue with the participants in the workshop\, Dr Hone will demonstrate how it is possible to reclaim the disavowed parts of our psyches and she will demonstrate how differentiation of complexes can clarify and give meaning to the individual and collective confusion in our psyches and lives.

SUMMARY:The Opus of Individuation
DESCRIPTION:Within the Jungian framework of understanding\, living a symbolic life is equivalent to engaging consciously in the individuation process. The Friday evening lecture is entitled\, consequently\, “the Opus of Individuation.” This talk will focus on the two great movements of the individuation process\, the analytic and the synthetic. The first has to do with “preparation\,” or “clearing the ground” of complexes\, identifications\, and fixations\, in order to make room for new psychological development. The second takes up the task of integrating elements of the collective unconscious into identity and behavior. The methods for doing this are primarily dream interpretation\, and the practice of active imagination. The talk will include examples.

This lecture presumes something different: Memories\, Dreams\, Reflections can be read as the ‘biography’ of an attitude that engages the distresses of postmodern psychological life. Jung is chronicling not only his personal development\, but also how consciousness might deal with the maturity of the ego-complex\, or its failure to mature. If consciousness does not confront this complex\, certain pathologies appear in personal and collective life\, both centered around the “presence of the absence” of the psyche’s natural religiosity. Tonight’s lecture approaches Memories\, Dreams\, Reflections as a manual on how to repristinate the psyche’s natural religiosity in an age of cynical postmodernism.

SUMMARY:Jung\, Cosmology and the Transformation of the Modern Self
DESCRIPTION:The modern mind has long assumed that there are few things more categorically distant from each other than “cosmos” and “psyche.” What could be more outer than cosmos? What more inner than psyche? Are they not informed by fundamentally different kinds of principles\, the one objective\, the other subjective? \nBut developments in many fields\, from depth psychology to philosophy of science\, now oblige us to recognize that cosmos and psyche are in fact deeply intertwined. Our understanding of the universe affects every aspect of our interior life from our highest spiritual convictions to our most intimate daily experience. Conversely\, the deep dispositions of our interior life fully permeate and configure our understanding of the entire cosmos. \nThe limits of our cosmological imagination define the limits of our existence: Do we live in a disenchanted\, mechanistic\, purposeless universe as a randomly produced oddity of isolated consciousness\, or do we participate in a living cosmos of unfolding meaning and purpose? \nOn Friday evening\, drawing on the insights of Jung and others\, we will explore the evolution of the modern world-view and the forging of the modern self\, which have affected everything from contemporary religion and psychotherapy to U.S. foreign policy and the global ecological crisis.

Not surprisingly\, we discover the wisdom of sorrow articulated in ancient Chinese texts\, in Jung’s description of inner evolution\, and in the poetry of a modern mystic. We will consider the role of sorrow in initiation\, ancient and modern.

DESCRIPTION:“Gather the women” is a message from mother archetype\, mother Earth\, mother instinct\, Mother Goddess\, the Sacred Feminine. Suppression of the feminine principle is taking life on the planet to the brink. Terrorism\, wars\, and the proliferation of nuclear weapons\, global warming and deterioration of the environment; domestic violence\, trafficking of women and girls\, and children who are traumatized and dying of preventable diseases are the toxic symptoms. “Gather the Women” is a call from the Sacred Feminine to bring the feminine principle into consciousness and peace into the culture\, to be a critical mass\, a tipping point–the metaphoric millionth circle. \nThis is not about replacing patriarchy with matriarchy. Women can be as predominated and as unempathic as men as a gender are thought to be\, and there are many men who are nurturing and empathic as women are thought to be. This is an acknowledgment that women as a gender–as a whole\, not every woman\, but women generally–have a wisdom that is needed to save the world. SUMMARY:Grace in the Desert: Awakening to the Gifts of Monastic Life
DESCRIPTION:  \nWhen I had journeyed half of our life’s way\,\nI found myself within a shadowed forest\,\nFor I had lost the path that does not stray. (Dante\, Inferno I of the Commedia) \nA desire stirs in each of us at some point in our lives\, prompting us to leave the familiar confines of family\, neighborhood and routine and take to the road in response to one of the oldest archetypal impulses embedded in our psyche: pilgrimage. \nThe pilgrim is not a tourist\, a road warrior\, or one mobile for the sake of movement alone. Pilgrimage is a questing after some appetite in the soul that possessions or success will not satisfy. A poetic journey stirred by the process of individuation\, it is also a sacred restlessness for an experience that transcends the normative\, everyday reality we live out\, at times\, almost unconsciously. It is a journey both external and internal which insists on documenting itself in memory and in the act of writing. I call this action “pengrimage.” \nJung reminds us that “the quality of inwardness is missing today:” ie an awareness of an inner correspondence or equivalence with an actual event or situation in the world. Pilgrimage is an attempt to allow for the presence of this correspondence between psyche\, spirit and world through silence\, solitude and meditation.

DESCRIPTION:The body plays an integral role in the expression of personal myth. Exploring the symbolic dimension of a body symptom helps to unravel the mystery of wounding and healing that lies hidden within the symptom itself. Dreams\, visions and artwork will be utilized to bring meaning to such manifestations. \nWithin this context\, Ms. Rothenberg will describe her personal experience with psychic wounds that manifested as physical scars and that led her to Africa to study scarification rites. The scars\, instead of simply being the source of embarrassment and pain\, became the sacred jewels that illuminated the path of self-understanding\, thus creating a link to the spiritual meaning embedded in a body symptom.

SUMMARY:The Father: Who Is He?
DESCRIPTION:The Image and Reality of the Father has been increasingly precarious in this past century. From the American and French Revolution\, through the Industrial Revolution in which men were demoted to chain workers\, on to the experience of the young father as veteran by way of two World Wars and the Vietnam war\, and witness to the downfall of the Terrible Fathers (the dictators of the 20th century)\, there has been a historical and symbolic demise in the status and power of the Father. As shown in myths that celebrate him in Western Antiquity\, the Father has been largely a cultural construction; recent\, fragile\, and relative. That historical and symbolic change reaches us through the collective unconscious. Is it surprising then that the increasing separation of fathers from their children in every corner of the Western world is occurring? We will discuss this century-old phenomenon in light of the dynamics of our collective experience\, rather than as a sum of individual cases.

Drawing upon a childhood in Beverly Hills and her ten years as a Hollywood actor\, Dr. Landau will thus explore the impact of the archetype on women¹s lives with clinical examples\, tales of bygone actresses\, mythical amplification\, and feminine typology generally in this uniquely personal analysis of the Aphrodite archetype.
