SUMMARY:Achieving the Image: Lessons from Chinese Philosophy
DESCRIPTION:This month OFJ welcomes back John Beebe\, MD.  Dr. Beebe is a past president of the C. G. Jung Institute of San Francisco and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He has lectured on topics related to analytical psychology in many parts of the world.  Most recently\, Dr. Beebe has become the International Association for Analytical Psychology’s Liaison to the Developing Group of analytical psychotherapists in Shanghai.  His book Integrity in Depth has been translated into Chinese\, and he is part of the project to bring out the Collected Works of C. G. Jung in a Chinese translation.  John is the founding editor of Jung Journal: Culture and Psyche\, and served as the first US editor of the Journal of Analytical Psychology.   He maintains a psychotherapy practice in San Francisco.

SUMMARY:Psyche and Nature: Inner Journeys in the Outer World
DESCRIPTION:With his idea of the psychoid archetype Jung explored a level of the unconscious where psyche and nature are  one.  In this lecture\, Dr. Romanyshyn will show  how what we have called the unconscious is at this level the conscious of nature within us. Presenting a DVD he made after returning from a journey he took to the Antarctic in Nov. 2009\, Dr. Romanyshyn will describe how this journey in the outer world began with a journey in the inner world of a dream of more than 30 years ago. He will also suggest in this lecture that the format of the DVD\, which presents 86 images set to music accompanied by a voice over\, deepens a psychology of mind\, where the inner world of psyche and the outer world of nature are separate\, into an aesthetics of the heart\, where the inner and the outer intersect each other. In addition Dr. Romanyshyn will also consider how psychology as an aesthetic response to nature can be the foundation for a radical ecology that attends to the crises of nature as a symptom calling us to re-member the broken connections between the world and us.

SUMMARY:The Tropics of Desire: The Soul’s Expressions of Coniunctio in Dreams and Life
DESCRIPTION: This talk entails a re-imagining of the dynamics of the anima and animus in light of modern arousal studies\, gender identity theory and discourse analysis. \nJung’s theory of the anima and animus was crucial to his crowning works of Mysterium Coniunctionis  and Aion\, and remains a centerpiece of thinking about lived relationship. However the original formulation has been correctly riddled with accusations of anachronism\, gender bias and linguistic naivete.  Because of these difficulties it has been either used unreflectively or abandoned\, not coincidentally in a similar way to modern attitudes toward religion.  This talk re-imagines the deepest path of the animae as they lead to the self – in theory\, in dreams and in lived relationship.

DESCRIPTION:How should we balance the inner and the outer\, the masculine and the feminine\, the eternal and the every day?  In struggling with goals and duties\, how do we also attend to the workings of destiny and the cosmos?  Utilizing a three-thousand-year-old story from India\,The Ramayana\, as guide\, this talk explores the Eastern genius for the development of consciousness.  Each of the characters in this individuation tale represents a part of the human psyche – all of which must be dealt with during the journey of life. This story takes a very different approach to the feminine and to evil than individuation stories in the West\, and provides unique insights about living through a time when cultural traditions and values seem to be breaking down.

SUMMARY:Technology and Soul: Living at the Turning Point
DESCRIPTION:Technology brings many gifts\, but the constant innovation and change have a psychological cost. We can become disoriented or distracted and lose sight of the inner compass. Finding our direction in these liquid times is a challenge—a challenge that’s only going to deepen . . . \nUntil recently\, our gadgets have remained largely external and have not directly altered our basic nature. Today\, however\, we stand on the threshold of reengineering our essential being. For large numbers of people cyberspace has already begun to replace everyday life. Devices designed to further the adaptation of mind and body to the computer world are already in the works. Chip implants beneath our skin will soon be commonplace. Around these innovations lies a sea of developments in psychotropic medication\, genetic engineering\, plastic surgery and robotics\, all aiming to transform the very fabric of our existence. \nThe impact these changes will make on the psyche is an unexplored question. Uncovering the shadow side of this ultimate makeover seems critical\, but simply turning back may not be an option. How then are we to respond? \nJung was leery of technology. He once said\, “civilized man . . . is in danger of losing all contact with the world of instinct\,” adding that this loss “is largely responsible for the pathological condition of contemporary culture.” In this lecture Jung’s understanding of instinctual life and psychological wellbeing will be discussed in light of impending technologies. We’ll try to find our psychological feet in the face of this tinkering with Nature.

SUMMARY:Psychoid: The Chaotic Dynamics of Individuation
DESCRIPTION:The overall theme of the lecture and workshop this weekend will be the way in which the chaotic dynamics of the individuation process originate in the body. Chaos refers to those highly de-stabilizing disturbances in our lives that contribute to growth and stability. We’ll see how these disturbances resonate with the unconscious\, operate throughout our lives\, and express themselves symbolically. Recognizing and understanding their symbolic expressions allows us to move beyond those patterns that keep us stuck\, freeing us to participate in the unconscious chaos at work in our lives. \nJung and Jungians have always been fascinated with that which exists beyond consciousness. What is the unconscious? How can we perceive and decipher its symbolism? How can ego and unconscious work together to further individuation? \nWe’re not the only ones interested in the unconscious\, science is\, too. Recent discoveries in genetics\, microbiology and biochemistry have increased our understanding of the most basic dynamics of physical processes\, especially those that influence how we perceive\, process and respond to the world around us. Psycho-neuro-endocrinal-immunology\, for example\, studies how the nervous\, endocrine and immune systems interact with psyche. \nJung referred to that part of the psyche where mind and body overlap as psychoid; In the psychoid realm of the psyche\, mind and body influence and modify each other. \nTonight we’ll review how the smallest molecules have enormous effects on us. We’ll see how physical processes possess a consciousness greater than the ego’s. Finally\, we’ll compare current research with that of the alchemists\, particularly how the “organic alchemy” of today exactly parallels the inorganic alchemy of years past.

SUMMARY:Archetypal Aspects of the Mourning Process
DESCRIPTION:In Jungʼs last active imagination in The Red Book\, Christ offers Jung “the beauty of suffering.” These paradoxical lines are not popular in todayʼs Western culture\, nor are they very comforting to one who is deep in grief. More than likely after great loss\, we lose our commonsense and faith in lifeʼs predictability. Sometimes all we believed in comes into question and we feel as if we have no standpoint. Mourning takes place in a period of liminality\, a marginal phase when we cannot go back in time and we do not know what lies ahead. This time of life is mostly painful and chaotic. Yet countless ordinary people who have worked through grief testify that they wouldnʼt return to how they were\, psychologically or spiritually\, before their ordeal. In this presentation\, we will explore the deep emotions and the wisdom of the heart that can come after great losses\, including bodily injury\, health\, home\, and community\, separation\, and death. We will observe how the work of grief may enhance the individuation process\, and\, using New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina as example\, we will ponder how individuation may evolve in a city.

SUMMARY:The Shadows and Gifts of American Narcissism
DESCRIPTION:The American psyche has typically been seen as narcissistic. Indeed\, we readily identify with the heroic\, the good\, and the brave. However\, these noble portraits cast a long shadow. In this Friday evening lecture\, Dr. West will supplement a Jungian exploration of this complex reality with slides and discussion about the works of a contemporary European artist\, Anselm Kiefer. In Kiefer’s work\, we experience an active engagement with the tension between destruction and creation. The ability to embody a union of opposites emerges from a strong and flexible consciousness that can hold such a paradoxical position. Consciousness that has developed this strength and flexibility is supported as one works through the dynamics of exhibitionism and grandiosity\, ultimately forging a healthy narcissism: an embodied self-esteem\, a rooted sense of values\, and a capacity to tolerate vulnerability and limits. We witness these dynamics and developments within Kiefer’s work. With these developments\, an individual – and a community or nation – can work to engage in an effective dialogue with primal forces that carry the potential for both apocalypse and epiphany. With these strengths\, we deepen our capacity to confront and suffer the tragic personal and historical realities in which we participate.

SUMMARY:The Tibetan Book of the Dead and Everyday Life
DESCRIPTION:The Tibetan Book of the Dead\, or Bardo Thodol\, is a manual or guide for the 49-day period between a person’s death and their next rebirth.  Written in Tibet in the middle ages\, it describes the entities and experiences that await all of us in the bardo\, or the in-between.  Many strange and scary things happen in that intermediate phase\, and it is best\, from the point of view of the text\, to be prepared.  In fact\, if one is prepared enough\, the moment of death can be the most opportune time to achieve liberation.  This occurs when you can see what is happening\, including the most terrifying images\, as aspects of your own mind. \nJung writes that the Bardo Thodol makes “clear to the dead man the primacy of the psyche\, for that is the one thing which life does not make clear to us.  We are so hemmed in by things which jostle and oppress that we never get the chance\, in the midst of all these ‘given’ things\, to wonder by whom they are ‘given’.  It is from this world of given things that the dead man liberates himself; and the purpose of the instructions is to help him toward this liberation.   we … learn from the very first paragraphs the that ‘giver’ of all ‘given’ things dwells within us.  This is a truth which in the face of all evidence\, in the greatest things as well as in the smallest\, is never known although it is often so very necessary\, indeed vital\, for us to know it.”  (vol 11: 514) \nWhy does Jung say this is vital?  Because this exploration of the in-between has the capacity to liberate us in this life\, long before the body dies. \nOur lecture will include a brief history of the Bardo Thodol and then a symbolic exploration of its other reality.  We will look at it compared to the Egyptian Book of the Dead and Jung’s own opus of the undiscovered country\, The Red Book.  Finally we will ground it in our daily lives as a useful and inspirational tool that has something to say to everyone.  Fantastic images will accompany the lecture.

SUMMARY:‘The Way of What is to Come’:  Jung’s "Liber Novus" and the Past and Future of Jungian Psychology
DESCRIPTION:In 1913\, when psychiatrist C.G. Jung was 38 years old\, he began to experience an overwhelming number of waking dreams and visions.  Convinced that this was an opportunity to understand his own psyche as well as that of his patients\, Jung began his “confrontation with the unconscious\,” which he first documented in a series of small\, black books\, and later expounded upon\, analyzed and illustrated in a large\, red leather-bound journal. \nAt the onset of Jung’s encounter with psyche\, he was in a state of disillusionment with scientific rationalism – what he called “the spirit of the times.” In the course of many quixotic encounters with his own soul and with other inner figures\, he came to know and appreciate “the spirit of the depths\,” a field that makes room for magic\, coincidence and the mythological metaphors delivered by dreams.  During this time he developed his principal theories-of the archetypes\, the collective unconscious\, and the process of individuation-that transformed psychotherapy from a practice concerned with treatment of the sick into a means for higher development of the personality. \nIn this illustrated presentation\, Dr. Shamdasani will explain how Jung regained his soul and overcame the contemporary malaise of spiritual alienation\, which he ultimately achieved through enabling the rebirth of a new image of God and developing a new worldview in the form of a psychological and theological cosmogony.

DESCRIPTION:When you treat the individual\, you treat the culture.  -C. G. Jung \nPsychotherapy is as much a political and social discourse as it is a private one. If we are destroyed as a species\, it will be psychology and spirituality that launches the literal or mythic nukes.  If we survive and flourish as a species\, it will be a depth\, psychologically informed spiritually that generates and narrates that Story of cultural transformation and deepened soul-evolution. And psychotherapy is nothing if it is not simply the witnessing\, recording\, and transmission of the individual and societal encounters with the living numinal realm of depth human experience [what the Western tradition and Jung has called the imago Dei]. as it involves the numinal\, that encounter is always a transpersonal one. there is no secular politics only archetypal/transpersonal politics. we often get so politically lost and ensnarled because we forget this depth background of our societal interactions. \nThe soul never thinks without an image. –  Aristotle \nTherefore\, psychotherapy\, as a political discipline\, witnesses\, records\, and transmits these on-going experiential communiqués from and dialogues with this numinous/ transformative realm of being.  In some ancient cultures\, every citizen was believed to be a vehicle for this living numinal dimension\, for this living will and voice of the gods as mediated through human experience. The public sphere\, the common marketplace of political interaction and achievement\, was the Polis. A well lived life was a life unfolded in a conscious\, loving seeking out of this Destiny and\, then\, serving it with as much thoughtful\, loving\, and compassionate dedication as possible. Privately\, this service would be to loved ones and vocation; publically\, this service would be an engaged political interaction with one’s fellow citizens. \nAll life is bound to carriers who realize it\, and it is simply inconceivable without them. But every carrier is charged with an individual destiny and destination\, and the realization of these alone makes sense of life.  –   C. G. Jung \nEveryone is politically engaged. Some are simply more aware of and disciplined about that engagement and its attendant social responsibilities. Every act in the public sphere is a political act\, an act that builds up more loving and compassionate connection to the living numinous or tears it down. But every act\, conscious or unconscious\, aware or unaware\, is a healing or destructive political act. We are all citizen politicians. We all have a public duty. We all serve the gods in the fervent hopes that the gods will then serve us and our community and lead us to more light and not more darkness. \nIt may well be prejudice to restrict the psyche to being “inside the body.” Insofar as the psyche is a non-spatial aspect\, there may be a psyche “outside-the-body\,” a region so utterly different from “my” psychic sphere that no one has to get out of oneself…to get there. –   C. G. Jung \nThis brief seminar sketches some clinical and cultural examples of these profound experiential psycho-political transcripts that emerge within or penetrate into depth therapy. SUMMARY:Living The Unlived Life
DESCRIPTION:This talk explores the essential developmental task in the second half of life – rectifying the loss of abandoned dreams and unrealized potentials to achieve our ultimate life meaning and purpose. What is unlived life?  It consists of those potential aspects of ourselves that have not adequately entered into our experience.  Of course\, no one can live out all of life’s possibilities\, but there are key aspects of our being that must be brought into life or we cannot realize fulfillment.   We all carry with us a vast inventory of unlived life.  Even if we have achieved major life goals and seemingly have few regrets\, there are significant experiences that have been closed to each of us. For everything we choose (or that has been chosen for us)\, something else remains “unchosen.” \nThe greatest burden a child must bear is the unlived life of the parents. \n– C.G. Jung \nZarathustra goes to the grave with the unfulfilled dreams of his youth.  He speaks to them as if they were ghosts who have betrayed him bitterly.  They struck up a dance and then spoiled the music.  Did the past make his path so weighty?  Did his unlived life impede him and consign him to a life that seems not to pass? \n– F. Nietzsche \nWe can hear the distant drumbeat of unlived life in the mutterings that go on in the back of our heads; “Woulda-coulda-shoulda.”  Or in second-guessing our life choices.  Or those late night longings. The unexpected grief that arises seemingly out of nowhere. A sense that we have somehow missed the mark\, or failed to do something we were so sure we were supposed to do. Where did we go wrong\, and what is this life that we find ourselves living\, so different that what we set out to do? \nWhen brought into consciousness\, unlived life can become the fuel that propels us beyond current limitations. By exploring unlived life we learn to rise above fears\, regrets\, and disappointments\, to expand our vision beyond the narrow confines of the ego\, and to embrace the full measure of our being.  An enlightened vision is our most profound unlived potential\, and bringing it to fruition is the worthy purpose of the second half of life.

SUMMARY:The Burn Wound of Eros
DESCRIPTION:In one subtext of the ancient love story of Psyche and Eros\, “narcissism” and the “predatory” underline the romantic attitude of Eros\, the god of love. His bride Psyche is entrapped within his magical paradise; she is his prey\, his plaything to be used then discarded. As the story reveals\, the transformation of narcissism in the romantic begins at the moment when Eros is violently burned – suffering a great loss and wound to his inflation. It is from the “burn wound” and separation of the lovers that Psyche – signifying the male’s psyche/soul/anima – develops resilience\, maturity and can ultimately be awakened by a form of love\, transcendent of narcissism and no longer bound by the mother complex. \nCorrespondingly in analysis\, one can observe the narcissistic skin seared open\, and the shattering of omnipotence in the traumatic encounter with an emerging\, transcendent Other. This psychological wounding is a necessary process for recovering emotional life and developing the capacity to love in a man living at the surface of life.

SUMMARY:Dreams of Fate; the Fate of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Jung described the process of individuation as the curiosity about and understanding of the autonomous\, unconscious psyche.  Curiosity is the trait that allows us to follow the red thread of the otherwise mysterious symbols as they emerge from the impersonal and personal unconscious.  However the unconscious is barred from our direct perception and so appears to us in many ways — in symptoms\, in our bodies\, in relationships\, in emotion\, in personal insight\, as well as through collective symbols. \nThis weekend\, we will explore and practice Jung’s most important tools for translating communications from the unconscious.   We will take a new look at amplification as a very precise technique\, and add to it the orientational method Jung developed in Volume 12; Psychology and Alchemy. Although we can use these tools to look at any symbolic communication from film to astrophysical theory to psychotic ideation\, we will look specifically at dreams. \nAlthough there are many sources from which to derive Jung’s method\, it is only with the publishing of Jung’s seminars that we see his teaching style and the method itself with dramatic clarity.  We are fortunate that Jung’s latest volume\, Children’s Dreams\, gives us just such clarity. In this work Jung shows us that some dreams reveal the arc of fate contained within the most determinative personal images – determinative not because we had them as children but because we remember them 30 or 40 years later (the dreams in this volume are not the dreams of children but the dreams remembered by adults from their childhood). \nDream images remembered from childhood are similar to collective symbols in that they come to us without relevant associations.  The seminar will reveal how Jung interpreted these images without the help of surrounding personal material.  Because of the sensitivity of this method\, Jung taught it to his inner circle but barred this material from publication for many years because it shows his work in a different light than in many of the other volumes.  It is a great boon to us\, however\, for here we can observe Jung’s uniquely direct style of teaching as he explains how to decipher the language of dreams and outlines the value of amplification. \nWe will introduce this particularly powerful method of symbolic translation during the lecture and then have a chance to practice it in more detail during the workshop.  We will also consider Jung’s radical concept of changing fate\, or heimarmene\, through psychological development.

SUMMARY:The Embodied Psyche: Alchemical Imagery and Unconscious Emotional Communication
DESCRIPTION:Jung’s work is founded on a belief in the reality of the psyche rather than on a reductionist point-of-view. Yet we may also wonder how his theories about the nature of unconscious communication\, self-regulation\, and active imagination jibe with new and fascinating studies coming from the field of neurobiology. \nWe will begin with images of the King and Queen from “Psychology of the Transference” and from the Splendor Solis\, as examples of Jung’s use of imagery\, which can communicate emotions and ideas that cannot be easily put into words.   We will then compare Jung’s method to Darwin’s early work on emotional communication through body language and facial expression and to contemporary research\, which employs neuro-imagining techniques to study nonverbal cues that can trigger an emotional response in another person\, both before and sometimes without any conscious awareness.   Participants can expect to come away with a basic understanding of nonverbal communication\, which underlies much of what we talk about when we speak of unconscious-to-unconscious communication in psychotherapy and in everyday life.

DESCRIPTION:Lara Newton lays the foundation for a new psychological perspective on the brother-sister relationship.  She explores that relationship in all its variety\, both externally in the world of interpersonal and cultural relationships and internally in the relationship between conscious and unconscious\, and masculine and feminine. \nIn this lecture\, based on a book she worked on for over a decade\, Lara will present the process of transformation from bonding to wounding and finally to healing and redemption. This transformation process takes the brother-sister relationship from an outer experience\, whether negative or positive\, to a powerful intrapsychic reality\, for any individual who takes up the challenge of relating to this psychological phenomenon.  In the course of the evening\, Lara will also share some poetic material and brother-sister stories that inspired her. \nLara writes in her book\, Brothers and Sisters: Discovering the Psychology of Companionship\, “Brother and sister point the way toward a new understanding of companionship and mutuality because first and foremost\, they are companions… At this point in history\, we must remember that there is power\, not only in conflict and discord\, but also in harmony and equanimity.”  In a spirit of companionship\, Lara shares her insights and welcomes discussion with her sister (and brother) Jungian community in Portland.

DESCRIPTION:With the advent of the Aquarian age\, a growing number of individuals are turning inward in their search for a meaningful connection to the mystery of life.  This evolution of consciousness was brought home to our presenter when\, several decades ago\, she read  a letter from the Spirit River Dream Analysis and Research Center located in a tiny settlement in the Peace River Country of central Canada requesting an affiliation with the C.G. Jung Institute in Los Angeles.  Dr. Sanford and her analyst husband answered the call\, and journeyed to this remote community to present lectures and films. \nAmong this small group of pioneering souls\, one woman’s psychic commitment\, as evidenced in her paintings and dialogues\, stood out.  Dr. Sanford kept in touch with this woman over the course of her life\, and tonight she presents her friend’s art and writing as a testament to the power of the inner connection to psyche that enriched her friend’s life and supported her journey toward death.

SUMMARY:Violence and the Religious Instinct
DESCRIPTION:We would perhaps like to forget that there is an archetypal basis for the disturbing violence that is prominent in today’s world.  This lecture describes how to understand violence from an archetypal perspective and why this task is necessary if we are to bridge the dissociation between conscious and transconscious reality. For most of us\, “psychic reality” is still in the realm of ideas\, and psychologically\, we live in a pre-Copernican world.  In his most seminal works\, Jung wrote that violence and destructiveness are inextricable aspects of psychic reality and that violence is always encountered as part of the individuation process.  The hostile and violent impact of the unconscious upon the ego often calls upon us to experience and contain intense emotions of rage and violence. This need not be “bad news” if we remain aware of the larger picture.

Jung was very familiar with the Hindu Upanishads and the profound traditions of Indian spirituality.  He drew upon them for his understanding of core concepts of the psyche\, especially the Self within the individuation process.  This lecture will explore the nature of the innermost Self as revealed in the Upanishads and developed through the philosophical teachings of Vedanta. SUMMARY:The Mystical Relationship of Lover and Beloved
DESCRIPTION:Some say Sufism is Islamic mysticism; others say it is the primordial mystical tradition\, much older than Islam\, but absorbed into Islam. Perhaps Sufism is best defined as a universal path to union with God through love. One theme of this path\, expressed in the poetry of Rumi and others\, is the mystical relationship between lover and Beloved\, soul and Absolute\, human and God. In Jungian psychology there are many concepts that illumine this relationship: the ego as the center of consciousness and the Self as intelligence greater than the ego; the individuation process whereby the ego increasingly realizes its source and dependence upon the Self; the alchemical conjunction of ego and Self. Tonight\, we will use Jungian concepts\, Sufi poetry\, and teaching tales to explore the ecstatic relationship of lover and Beloved and the stages of the Sufi path whereby the soul gradually awakens to what eternally IS\, the Oneness it never really lost. We will conclude by discussing methods of inner transformation of this path.

SUMMARY:Context and Essence: Meaning and Transformation in Cultural and Analytic Process
DESCRIPTION:This lecture and workshop will introduce participants to the particular method that Jung used to investigate the so-called “relatively fixed symbols\,” or archetypes\, that arise in unconscious material. Some of this has come to light in the newly published volume\, Children’s Dreams: Notes from the Seminar Given in 1936-1940 (the first new volume from Jung’s archives in 40 years). \nIllustrations will be drawn from sources ranging from modern events to Flemish mysticism\, and will include a detailed  comparison between the series of the first ten images from the Rosarium Alchemicum (used by Jung in his Psychology of the Transference) and the Ten Oxherding pictures from the Zen Buddhist tradition. \nThe lecture will move quickly through Jung’s method of deriving and applying the meaningful content from the context of an image\, while the workshop will give everyone a chance to both practice it and question it.  We will then look at a particular arc of images that runs through life and in small groups apply the process that has been learned. This should give everyone an individualized set of alchemical images to contrast with the collective ones or just ponder on his or her own.

SUMMARY:The Serpent and the Cross – Spanning the Split through Active Imagination
DESCRIPTION:In our time\, the cultural split within the Western psyche has reached critical proportions—a perilous split in which Father Spirit and Mother Nature have been rent asunder. And we suffering individuals\, as microcosms within the macrocosm\, bear the task of consciously redeeming the chthonic feminine spirit that carries within it the wisdom of the serpent—the innate wisdom of the psyche that emerges from the unconscious to heal this split. \nTonight’s lecture will present a series of twenty-three archetypal images painted by the presenter out of a series of sixty-three paintings spanning the years 1959 to 1987\, along with dialogues she entered into with their symbolic figures\, portraying a life-saving inner journey to heal the maternal wound at the core of her psyche. Katherine Sanford will use these paintings and their accompanying text to reflect upon the transformative power of active imagination\, demonstrating its use as one of the most profoundly effective tools for furthering the individuation process.

SUMMARY:Synchronicity and Its Implications
DESCRIPTION:Jung’s concept of synchronicity represents one of the most strenuous efforts of the 20th century to construct a bridge across the chasm between mind and matter\, self and world\, psyche and cosmos. In popular culture\, the concept has been surprisingly widely embraced. The term and the phenomena it describes played no small role in the way many individuals make sense of their lives. In the face of the disenchanted modern worldview\, the search for a ground of purpose and meaning that transcends human subjectivity has become an urgent spiritual priority. For many today\, synchronicities are directly relevant to the search. The concept has also had a unique impact on the intellectual world\, from religious studies to physics. In tonight’s lecture\, Dr. Tarnas will summarize the origin and history of the concept in Jung’s work\, discuss the experiential dimension of synchronistic events\, and address their larger metaphysical and perhaps evolutionary implications.
