SUMMARY:Psychological Trauma and Listening with the Heart
DESCRIPTION:In lecture and workshop we will explore how each one of us can contribute to healing the anima mundi\, the soul of the world. After the trauma of World War II and the genocide of the Holocaust\, C.G. Jung asked\, “Is it really only brute force that decides everything?” Over the past seven years I have learned from individuals and communities who are suffering the posttraumatic consequences of war and violence in eastern Congo\, northern Uganda\, South Sudan\, and western Kenya. In essence\, I invite us to explore and appreciate how\, in a rapidly changing world\, paying attention to innate capacities\, such as what Jung calls the transcendent function\, does make a difference. The mythopoetic layers of the psyche and creative activities of the arts function as agents of transformation by overcoming stuckness and pressures to conform. A summons to “purposeful action” can help transcend personal and cultural layers of reference and rekindle the struggle of giving birth to one’s future. In a globally traumatized world\, taking a stand and modeling principled humane behavior through listening with the heart opens paths to building community and creating future.

SUMMARY:Archetypal Images: Reflections on James Hillman and Jungian Thought
DESCRIPTION:James Hillman (1926-2011)\, a fierce critic of mainstream psychology and a challenger of many Jungian assumptions\, was also\, arguably\, the most significant thinker and writer to have taken up Jungian psychology. He wrote over twenty books\, including Pulitzer nominated Revisioning Psychology and the best-selling work\, The Soul’s Code.\nAfter an overview of Hillman’s ideas\, this lecture will focus on his view of images and what he called the “poetic basis of mind.” With illustrations from the arts and culture\, we will discuss Hillman’s use of terms such as “archetypal imagination” and “soul-making.” My intention is to demonstrate the way Hillman’s approach extends and amplifies Jung’s understandings.

SUMMARY:Primal Fears Explored with Humanity’s Oldest Story as Our Guide – The Epic of Gilgamesh
DESCRIPTION:Humanity’s most primal fear is the fear of death.  The desire to escape physical death is a  fundamental fact of human existence.  Recent technological advancements in medicine and robotics have made the ability to live forever a much more tantalizing possibility.   In this lecture and workshop\, we will explore the meaning of this primal fear and fundamental yearning\, using humanity’s oldest story\, The Epic of Gilgamesh\, as our guide. This story from ancient Iraq tells of the exploits of mighty King Gilgamesh whose fear of physical death compelled him to seek out a legendary figure considered to be the only human granted immortality by the gods. Gilgamesh’s exploits reflect enduring truths about our fears and desires and suggest how we can better prepare for life’s ultimate goal. During the Friday lecture\, we will discuss the contemporary search for immortality and sketch the elements of the Gilgamesh story. On Saturday\, we will use lecture and discussion to explore the roots of our own yearning for immortality with the Gilgamesh story as a valuable guide.

An early patient of both Jung and Freud\, Ms. Spielrein was a lifelong seeker. In this film\, her connections to Jung and Freud are explored in the context of her personal struggles as well as the turbulent history of Europe during the first half of the 20th century. DESCRIPTION:Compulsions arise organically in the psyche – often in troubling opposition to our conscious intentions.  They can occur as images\, ideas\, emotions\, or actions.  From a Jungian perspective\, compulsions seek to transform us.  Indeed\, compulsions are often intensely disturbing precisely because they arise from attitudes that have become dangerously one-sided; and yet they beckon to us from the drive toward wholeness that animates the psyche.  If the content of a compulsion can be understood symbolically\, it becomes a portal to transformation. \nMr. Stebbins will explore the phenomenology and dynamics of compulsions with the goal of elucidating their transformative potential. \n…Wherever we are still attached\, we are still possessed; and when we are possessed\, there is one stronger than us who possesses us….  It is not a matter of indifference whether one calls something a ‘mania’ or a ‘god.’  To serve a mania is detestable and undignified\, but to serve a god is full of meaning and promise ….  (C.G. SUMMARY:The Other Side of Christmas: Incarnation as the Awesome Burden of Opposites
DESCRIPTION:The Incarnation\, at the core of the Christian mythos and message\, can be celebrated joyfully at Christmas as a union of opposites between human and divine\, but one which also ennobles us with the burden of what Jung calls “the divine problem”:  the paradox of divine wrath and love\, destruction and renewal.  As Jung puts it\, “Christ has shown how everybody will be crucified upon his destiny\,” a concept that includes shouldering the opposites in one’s psyche.  At the collective level that cross includes destructive impulses that have become incarnate in the reckless exploitation of the earth for oil and profit.  The threat of global catastrophe from irreversible global warming coexists (paradoxically) with love for the very children and grandchildren who will inherit our planet.

SUMMARY:The Call of Our Ancient Ancestors
DESCRIPTION:In the Red Book\, Jung writes: “When something long since passed . . . comes back again in a changed world\, it is new. To give birth to the ancient in a new time is creation.” The ancient ancestors are now coming back into the world through dreams\, bringing a new energy – a revitalization of the psyche both individually and collectively.  Jung deeply valued the archaic levels of human consciousness and often encouraged his patients to make contact with the “the two-million-year-old” man or woman within.  He believed that “most of our difficulties come from losing contact with our instincts\, with the age-old unforgotten wisdom stored up in us”.  This presentation is an exploration of the dreams of modern Western-educated people in which ancient ancestral wisdom makes itself known.  It will include a discussion of “big dreams”\, an introduction to the levels of the unconscious as Jung sketched them\, and an exploration of archetypal images that belong to this range of being\, the wisdom of the primordial psyche.

DESCRIPTION: Our time is pervaded by a great paradox. On the one hand\, we see signs of an unprecedented level of engaged global awareness\, moral sensitivity to the human and non-human community\, psychological self-awareness\, and spiritually informed philosophical pluralism. On the other hand\, we confront the most critical\, and in some respects catastrophic\, state of the Earth in human history. Both these conditions have emerged directly from the modern age\, whose light and shadow consequences now affect every part of the planet. \nWe seem to be living at the end of an era. The past and the future are converging in our time with extraordinary force. Old structures are cracking\, the moment of creative chaos is upon us\, and the drama of our age has become a great question: What new principles\, what new structures—social\, political\, economic\, ecological\, psychological\, spiritual—will emerge to shape our future? So much is at stake. We are facing a threshold of fundamental collective transformation that bears a striking resemblance to what takes place on the individual level in initiatory rites of passage\, in near-death experiences\, in spiritual crises\, and in critical stages of what Jung called the individuation process. Can we find a place of equilibrium\, an eye in the storm\, from which we can engage this time of intense polarization and radical change? And in such an era of transition\, what is the role of “heroic” communities like that of Jungian institutes and societies — or the Bioneers or Schumacher\, CIIS or Pacifica\, Esalen or Findhorn — which carry principles and perspectives that run counter to the mainstream modern world view? \nTo help us navigate this threshold of transformation\, we need multiple perspectives and sources of insight. These answers involved spiritual tools that addressed what Jung called “the living substance” of ourselves and others.\n\n  \nIn this lecture Patricia will describe the common\, definitive root of some of these teachings in the writings and scientific studies of Goethe. Both C. G. Jung and Rudolf Steiner\, father of Biodynamic farming\, were deeply influenced by Goethe’s work\, a perspective denigrated since the days of Descartes. What supports the “living substance” in ourselves and the other\, even the not-human? What undermines its liveliness? Practical applications in the dynamics of “being in relationship with” and “having dominion over” will be given\, whether in analysis\, farming\, or our relationship to the environment.

SUMMARY:Exploring the Visual Language of the Unconscious
DESCRIPTION:The realm of psyche is immeasurably great and filled with living reality. -C.G. Jung \nIn her lecture\, Jane Zich will explore the “living reality” of the psyche as evidenced in the visual language of the unconscious that emerges in depth psychotherapy\, dreams\,\nfilms\, and extended active imagination processes. She will use paintings from her Vision Journey series — an image-mediated dialogue with the unconscious that has spanned seven years — to illustrate how recurrent cycles and shifts in imagery suggest a purposefulness in the visual language of the unconscious that can promote and support an “I-Thou” attitude of partnership between ego consciousness and the unconscious. Specific psychological tasks that seem required for specific stages or types of imagery will be described\, as well as impasses that tend to result when those tasks are avoided or incompletely met. Dr. Zich will illustrate the role of  “orienting intentions” in navigating extended dialogues with the unconscious\, and will refer to image stages and related tasks for ego consciousness that can be seen in C.G. Jung’s Red Book\, in cultural contexts\, and in societal impasses. Time for discussion will follow.

Whether one is a believer\, an atheist\, an agnostic\, a spiritual seeker or a student of religion\, it is difficult to contemplate questions of God without significant investment in the answers. DESCRIPTION:This month OFJ welcomes back John Beebe\, MD.  Dr. Beebe is a past president of the C. G. Jung Institute of San Francisco and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He has lectured on topics related to analytical psychology in many parts of the world.  Most recently\, Dr. Beebe has become the International Association for Analytical Psychology’s Liaison to the Developing Group of analytical psychotherapists in Shanghai.  His book Integrity in Depth has been translated into Chinese\, and he is part of the project to bring out the Collected Works of C. G. Jung in a Chinese translation.  John is the founding editor of Jung Journal: Culture and Psyche\, and served as the first US editor of the Journal of Analytical Psychology.   He maintains a psychotherapy practice in San Francisco.

SUMMARY:Psyche and Nature: Inner Journeys in the Outer World
DESCRIPTION:With his idea of the psychoid archetype Jung explored a level of the unconscious where psyche and nature are  one.  In this lecture\, Dr. Romanyshyn will show  how what we have called the unconscious is at this level the conscious of nature within us. Presenting a DVD he made after returning from a journey he took to the Antarctic in Nov. 2009\, Dr. Romanyshyn will describe how this journey in the outer world began with a journey in the inner world of a dream of more than 30 years ago. He will also suggest in this lecture that the format of the DVD\, which presents 86 images set to music accompanied by a voice over\, deepens a psychology of mind\, where the inner world of psyche and the outer world of nature are separate\, into an aesthetics of the heart\, where the inner and the outer intersect each other. In addition Dr. Romanyshyn will also consider how psychology as an aesthetic response to nature can be the foundation for a radical ecology that attends to the crises of nature as a symptom calling us to re-member the broken connections between the world and us.

SUMMARY:The Tropics of Desire: The Soul’s Expressions of Coniunctio in Dreams and Life
DESCRIPTION: This talk entails a re-imagining of the dynamics of the anima and animus in light of modern arousal studies\, gender identity theory and discourse analysis. \nJung’s theory of the anima and animus was crucial to his crowning works of Mysterium Coniunctionis  and Aion\, and remains a centerpiece of thinking about lived relationship. However the original formulation has been correctly riddled with accusations of anachronism\, gender bias and linguistic naivete.  Because of these difficulties it has been either used unreflectively or abandoned\, not coincidentally in a similar way to modern attitudes toward religion.  This talk re-imagines the deepest path of the animae as they lead to the self – in theory\, in dreams and in lived relationship.

This story takes a very different approach to the feminine and to evil than individuation stories in the West\, and provides unique insights about living through a time when cultural traditions and values seem to be breaking down.

SUMMARY:Technology and Soul: Living at the Turning Point
DESCRIPTION:Technology brings many gifts\, but the constant innovation and change have a psychological cost. We can become disoriented or distracted and lose sight of the inner compass. Finding our direction in these liquid times is a challenge—a challenge that’s only going to deepen . . . \nUntil recently\, our gadgets have remained largely external and have not directly altered our basic nature. Today\, however\, we stand on the threshold of reengineering our essential being. For large numbers of people cyberspace has already begun to replace everyday life. Devices designed to further the adaptation of mind and body to the computer world are already in the works. Chip implants beneath our skin will soon be commonplace. Around these innovations lies a sea of developments in psychotropic medication\, genetic engineering\, plastic surgery and robotics\, all aiming to transform the very fabric of our existence. \nThe impact these changes will make on the psyche is an unexplored question. Uncovering the shadow side of this ultimate makeover seems critical\, but simply turning back may not be an option. How then are we to respond? \nJung was leery of technology. He once said\, “civilized man . . . is in danger of losing all contact with the world of instinct\,” adding that this loss “is largely responsible for the pathological condition of contemporary culture.” In this lecture Jung’s understanding of instinctual life and psychological wellbeing will be discussed in light of impending technologies. We’ll try to find our psychological feet in the face of this tinkering with Nature.

SUMMARY:Psychoid: The Chaotic Dynamics of Individuation
DESCRIPTION:The overall theme of the lecture and workshop this weekend will be the way in which the chaotic dynamics of the individuation process originate in the body. Chaos refers to those highly de-stabilizing disturbances in our lives that contribute to growth and stability. We’ll see how these disturbances resonate with the unconscious\, operate throughout our lives\, and express themselves symbolically. Recognizing and understanding their symbolic expressions allows us to move beyond those patterns that keep us stuck\, freeing us to participate in the unconscious chaos at work in our lives. \nJung and Jungians have always been fascinated with that which exists beyond consciousness. What is the unconscious? How can we perceive and decipher its symbolism? How can ego and unconscious work together to further individuation? \nWe’re not the only ones interested in the unconscious\, science is\, too. Recent discoveries in genetics\, microbiology and biochemistry have increased our understanding of the most basic dynamics of physical processes\, especially those that influence how we perceive\, process and respond to the world around us. Psycho-neuro-endocrinal-immunology\, for example\, studies how the nervous\, endocrine and immune systems interact with psyche. \nJung referred to that part of the psyche where mind and body overlap as psychoid; In the psychoid realm of the psyche\, mind and body influence and modify each other. \nTonight we’ll review how the smallest molecules have enormous effects on us. We’ll see how physical processes possess a consciousness greater than the ego’s. Finally\, we’ll compare current research with that of the alchemists\, particularly how the “organic alchemy” of today exactly parallels the inorganic alchemy of years past.

SUMMARY:Archetypal Aspects of the Mourning Process
DESCRIPTION:In Jungʼs last active imagination in The Red Book\, Christ offers Jung “the beauty of suffering.” These paradoxical lines are not popular in todayʼs Western culture\, nor are they very comforting to one who is deep in grief. More than likely after great loss\, we lose our commonsense and faith in lifeʼs predictability. Sometimes all we believed in comes into question and we feel as if we have no standpoint. Mourning takes place in a period of liminality\, a marginal phase when we cannot go back in time and we do not know what lies ahead. This time of life is mostly painful and chaotic. Yet countless ordinary people who have worked through grief testify that they wouldnʼt return to how they were\, psychologically or spiritually\, before their ordeal. In this presentation\, we will explore the deep emotions and the wisdom of the heart that can come after great losses\, including bodily injury\, health\, home\, and community\, separation\, and death. We will observe how the work of grief may enhance the individuation process\, and\, using New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina as example\, we will ponder how individuation may evolve in a city.

SUMMARY:The Shadows and Gifts of American Narcissism
DESCRIPTION:The American psyche has typically been seen as narcissistic. Indeed\, we readily identify with the heroic\, the good\, and the brave. However\, these noble portraits cast a long shadow. In this Friday evening lecture\, Dr. West will supplement a Jungian exploration of this complex reality with slides and discussion about the works of a contemporary European artist\, Anselm Kiefer. In Kiefer’s work\, we experience an active engagement with the tension between destruction and creation. The ability to embody a union of opposites emerges from a strong and flexible consciousness that can hold such a paradoxical position. Consciousness that has developed this strength and flexibility is supported as one works through the dynamics of exhibitionism and grandiosity\, ultimately forging a healthy narcissism: an embodied self-esteem\, a rooted sense of values\, and a capacity to tolerate vulnerability and limits. We witness these dynamics and developments within Kiefer’s work. With these developments\, an individual – and a community or nation – can work to engage in an effective dialogue with primal forces that carry the potential for both apocalypse and epiphany. With these strengths\, we deepen our capacity to confront and suffer the tragic personal and historical realities in which we participate.
