DESCRIPTION:Americans today feel overwhelmed by the relentless flood of conflicting narratives surging through society. Every headline\, opinion page\, or dinner-table discussion seems to pulse with urgency\, distortion\, and division. \nHere is an unsettling truth: much of what we are reacting to isn’t coming from real people at all. It comes instead from cultural complexes—impersonal forces made up of raw emotion\, inherited trauma\, and mythic stories. \nCultural complexes function like splinter personalities of the American psyche—subpersonalities that walk and talk as if human\, but in reality are psychic fragments possessing individuals and groups like mutating viruses. \nThey are called cultural complexes because they possess specific\, recognizable characteristics that define how they function within the psyche. They are the building blocks of an inner sociology—one based not on statistics\, but on images\, emotions\, and unconscious identifications. \nJungian analyst Tom Singer outlines the underlying concept and basic features of cultural complexes. He will present examples of how cultural complexes live in the individual psyche and in the psyche of large groups of people. He draws on material and illustrations from his new book\, American Cultural Complexes: The Battleground of the Splintered American Psyche.

SUMMARY:First You Dream\, Then You Die:  A Cinematic Guide to Fate\, Free Will\, and Psychic Reality
DESCRIPTION:C. G. Jung championed the view of fate and destiny as one’s path in life\, dictated and even preordained by the Objective Psyche. This unconscious dimension of the human psyche guides a person along the path toward fulfilling the process of individuation. \nAniela Jaffé\, one of Jung’s closest colleagues\, expressed the relationship between fate and destiny: \n“The future does not really come into being but is already existent in some form. It appears to be unavoidable and unchangeable\, and that brings us the age-old question of the freedom of human will…. One can almost say that man’s freedom consists of being able either to struggle against fate or to accept it.” \nThe Jungian conception of a person’s fate and destiny as predestined—and lacking\, to a large degree\, in free will—can be a disturbing idea. To better understand this view\, we can look at certain themes in movies from the 1940s\, when a particular film genre dominated the films being released during that tumultuous era. \nThat genre\, film noir\, dramatized the struggle of protagonists against a fate they considered to be a malevolent force driving them down a disastrous path in life. As one film noir protagonist expressed it: \n“Fate\, or some mysterious force\, can put the finger on you or me for no good reason at all.” \nThis lecture will explore more deeply the relationship between the Jungian conception of fate and destiny and the film noir perspective. It will examine how these views both mirror and differ from one another\, and how fate may either doom a person to self-destruction or lead to an experience of self-transformation and the fulfillment of the process of individuation.

SUMMARY:Where does Peace for the World Come from in the Psyche?
DESCRIPTION:Where does peace come from in the psyche\, and how do we genuinely access it for the good of the world soul? \nIn times of great uncertainty\, the call toward meditation is growing. The need to plumb the depths and find the life of the soul through meditation is calling\, and new creations are emerging in connection with the transcendent. \nAttunement\, co-regulating\, and down-regulating—all shifts in consciousness that help the nervous system move through anxiety and trauma-body experiences as they surface—are now common parlance among many healing modalities. Yet mind-body splitting remains epidemic. \nWe are called to meet the transcendent in this work and to feel the transcendent calling us from within human suffering. Unconscious fear and vibrations of trauma can drive consciousness into the mental body as it attempts to cope\, or else lead to dissociation and self-medication. \nThe alternative to mind-body splitting is to pay attention to the animal body and various states of consciousness as sacred work\, and to see suffering as seeking transformation in the human soul. \nThis lecture aims to outline the value of putting on our own oxygen mask before helping others\, in order to give something true to the collective. Alchemical meditation\, in this context\, is about how we can make a sacred place for our being to reside in this world. \nThe trauma body\, dead mother zones\, and collective trauma can be met in this work\, but not through ego psychology alone. Our focus is on learning\, through meditation with what Jung called the somatic unconscious\, how to tune into the field and discover the breath body anew. \nIn so doing—breathing in connection with source and the symbolizing field—we can grow a constant connection of felt presence with the transcendent. \nWe will look into dreams that guide these explorations. We will also explore the nature of the psyche and the somatic unconscious\, where working with the animal body brings us over the threshold into the realm of the sacred and the Divine Feminine. \nWe can think of this work as an antidote for the infection going on in the body of the world.
