Those attending our programs have discovered that the Oregon Friends of Jung has its own archetypal insignia whose symbolism has been left to their intuition. This artwork (upper left) weaves together no fewer than ten perennial images of psychological life. The tree, an expression of psychological growth rooted in the underworld and unfolding in an upper realm, is paired with the innate wisdom of the unconscious, expressed by the serpent, whose spiral movement contrasts with linear assault preferred by the ego. Its serpentine body melds into the path winding toward the horizon that together converge into the central image, combining life's opposites like a mandala in the form of a quadrated flower, a goal of wholeness to which the serpent pays vigilant attention. The crown of the tree, the summit of the mountain, and the sky all intimate an ascent that reflects the goal of an integrated personality developed by paying heed to the unconscious psyche, and expressed outwardly in a conscious and caring community.
